After twenty years as a film and TV makeup artist, Russell wrote and shot the film off the back of five self-funded shorts, drawing on her own delinquent 1980s Australian childhood and a long-held urge to put a genuinely awful teenage girl on screen — the impulse that became Penny's cousin Kat (Sophia Wright-Mendelsohn).She talks about landing at Fantasia and getting matched with producers at Umbrella Entertainment and Shudder, shooting in a wintry Adelaide with a cast and crew she'd mostly never met — including Bailey Spalding as Penny and Alexandra Jensen as Amy — cutting six pages from the third act mid-shoot after a scheduling error, and how filming in continuity meant her editor could hand back a rough cut every single morning. It's a gory as fuck, nasty as hell and very fun film and Mia is a true horror fan.

Labour's new chief whip is a Liverpudlian with a broad cultural hinterland. Anneliese Midgley grew up in Knowsley on a housing estate. Her family struggled financially when she was growing up but their fortunes changed when her father got a job at the Halewood Ford factory. They moved to the more affluent area of Penny Lane and as a teenager Annaliese got a job at The Beatles Shop. Music became a huge part of her life. She hung out with DJs and musicians and was regularly seen behind the decks at cult Liverpool club night, Liquidation, which was run by her friend Daniel Hunt from the band Ladytron. Through him she met Saint Etienne founder Bob Stanley, who she married in 2000, and moved to London where Midgley became a music journalist. The couple later divorced but remain firm friends. Her first foray into politics was when she made some congestion charge badges for her friends and sent a few to then London Mayor Ken Livingstone who promptly employed her. She worked for him for five years before moving on to Unite union and then going on to work for Jeremy Corbyn, Keir Starmer and TUC General Secretary Paul Nowak. In 2024 she ran for parliament as the Labour candidate for Knowsley. In her two years in the commons she has established a reputation for getting things done. She fought hard to secure Olivia's law, campaigned for the Hillsborough law and was a key part of getting the government to back down on welfare reform. We hate to start the show with sad news. But the older we get, the more it seems to happen. Two icons from our childhood suddenly passed away and we talk about their accomplishments and the legacy they left behind. Despite not actually reviewing it for our show, we have talked a lot about Obsession. The little horror film has caught the public imagination like no other movie this year. We talk about the success of Obsession and what it means to indie horror in general. We do not shy away from movies that make us uncomfortable. On the contrary, we often go looking for them. We did not expect Penny Lane is Dead to be one of those films. We figured it would be a fun homage to 1980s Ozploitation. And in a lot of ways it was. But then there are the moments that harken to a darker side of the sub-genre. The movie is disgusting, bloody, tense, and an all around difficult watch. And through it all it manages to sneak in some genuine humor. It was a confusing watch to say the least. We had no hesitation when it came to the ending, however. In February 2023, Flaco, a Eurasian eagle-owl, escaped from the Central Park Zoo through a hole cut in the netting of his enclosure and soon found himself alone on a Manhattan sidewalk. But, as director Penny Lane (“Hail Satan?”, “Our Nixon”) shows in her inquisitive, insightful and irresistible documentary “Wild Inside,” Flaco would not be alone for long. Soon, he became the toast of the town, with his own devoted followers including owlers, tourists, apartment dwellers, TV late night hosts, and the news media.   Penny joins Ken on the pod to discuss how this enigmatic, majestic bird with the penetrating pumpkin eyes won New Yorkers' hearts from one end of Manhattan to the other and touched off a debate about how the wild animals in our midst should be treated and protected. Penny talks about how she, a birder herself, first heard about Flaco from a filmmaker friend who happened upon Flaco on his first night of freedom, and then embarked on her own journey to tell this multi-layered story from different perspectives. On this episode, I'm joined by writer and director Mia'Kate Russell to discuss her very excellent, highly entertaining, violent and bloody cat-and-mouse horror, Penny Lane is Dead. Set in 1986, during a scorching Aussie summer, Penny Lane is Dead follows three best friends who's celebration at a beach house turns into a blood-soaked fight for survival when a prank goes horribly wrong. The films cast includes veterans Steve Le Marquand, Fletcher Humphrys and Ben O'Toole, and exciting new comers Sophia Wright-Mendelsohn (daughter of Ben), Tahlee Fereday, Alexandra Jensen and Bailey Spalding. Despite Penny Lane is Dead being her debut feature film as writer and director, Mia'kate Russell has worked in the Australian film industry for decades as a makeup and special effects artist on countless films including 2040, What If It Works and Scare Campaign and has been a make-up artist for major productions including Nitram and The Leftovers. As a writer and director, her short films have won more than 30 awards and screened at prestigious festivals all around the world. I absolutely loved this chat with Mia. She is such a great personality, and her humorous approach to filmmaking was a true delight. I should note that Mia did have some audio issues at the beginning of this interview, but they correct them quite quickly. Anyway… enjoy.
