The Wondrous Elixir of the Two Chinese Lovers – Tim McGirkThe novel tells the story of archaeologist Ned Sheehan's discovery of two ancient Chinese tombs at a Maya site in southern Mexico. One tomb belongs to Xu Fu, a famous Taoist priest who vanished on a quest for the elixir of immortality at the behest of China's First Emperor. The other houses the emperor's own mother, scandalously revealed to have been Xu Fu's lover.Tim and John talk about what is known about Xu Fu, a historical person, and Emperor Qin Shi Huang's obsession with immortality. They speculate on what happened to Xu Fu's large expedition – could he have reached the Americas? Or Japan (where he is known as Jofuku)? John recommends John Dougill's Green Shinto website, which has several pieces regarding Xu Fu in Japan. The Wondrous Elixir of the Two Chinese Lovers is published by Plum Rain Press (which John runs), and is available as a paperback and ebook on Amazon stores.Tim McGirk's Book recommendations:The Man Who Loved China: The Fantastic Story of the Eccentric Scientist Who Unlocked the Mysteries of the Middle Kingdom (2008) by Simon WinchesterThe Grand Historian (also Records of the Grand Historian) by Sima Qian (there was various translations – the original was published circa 91 BC.)The China Voyage: A Pacific Quest by Bamboo Raft (1994) by Tim SeverinVisit Tim McGirk's website The Books on Asia Podcast is co-produced with Plum Rain Press. What happened or not in the Alaska summit between Trump and Putin? Two Chinese ships collided while doing a pincer move chasing a Philippine coast guard vessel. Will there be escalation in the future?
//The Wire//2300Z August 12, 2025////ROUTINE////BLUF: NAVAL DIPLOMACY CONTINUES IN THE SOUTH CHINA SEA, TWO CHINESE SHIPS DAMAGED IN COLLISION. ANTI-CRIME INITIATIVES CONTINUE IN WASHINGTON. CANADIAN BAN ON PUBLIC PARKS CONTINUES TO DRAW IRE OF CITIZENRY.// -----BEGIN TEARLINE----- -International Events-South China Sea: The situation remains tense following an escalation of maritime trade policy that took place yesterday. The conflict at Scarborough Shoal has continued over the past few months, with confrontations between the Philippine Navy and Chinese Coast Guard vessels becoming more frequent. Yesterday, Two Chinese vessels were carrying out power-projection operations in the area which took the form of spraying a Philippine vessel with water cannons (as has been a common tactic during this spat). However, during this confrontation the two Chinese vessels became less aware of their respective positions, which resulted in one colliding with the other.Analyst Comment: Video provided of the collision indicates that the damage was substantial, though China has not acknowledged this collision taking place. Nevertheless, this incident is merely the latest in the long history of force-projection operations in the region.Australia: A very graphic series of murders was reported in Melbourne overnight. One suspect has been arrested in conjunction with the murders of two people at their home in Mount Waverley.Analyst Comment: There is probably more to this story than first meets the eye. Most notably, the details of the murder scene alone are far too graphic to recall in mixed company. Also of note, graffiti was found spray painted on a few walls of the victims' home, which contained phrases such as "meat is murder". If this graffiti is connected to the murders, this could be a detail to be aware of, just in case this is more substantial than a home invasion gone wrong.Canada: Opposition to the ban on recreational areas being closed is growing in Nova Scotia, with a total of 6x people being ticketed and fined roughly $28,000 each for walking in the woods during the ban on outdoor activities.-HomeFront-Washington D.C. - This morning the White House announced the deployment of 800x National Guard soldiers throughout the city, to supplement the increased police presence as part of the recent counter-crime initiative.-----END TEARLINE-----Analyst Comment: So far, the general situation in Washington is much the same as before, with most policing efforts focusing on increase presence patrols, cleaning out homeless camps, more counter-narcotics operations, and so on. The DC Police Union has issued statements of support for President Trump's initiative, which has negated the talking points expressed by most media sources claiming that crime is down in DC. The fact that a DC police commander was suspended two weeks ago for manipulating crime data has also cast doubt on recent crime statistics throughout the city. More broadly, whether or not these efforts are having an impact on the crime situation is too soon to determine.Analyst: S2A1Research: https://publish.obsidian.md/s2underground//END REPORT//

The Chinese consulate general in Denpasar has confirmed that two Chinese nationals were killed in a fast boat capsizing accident off Indonesia's Bali Island.
That there are to be peace talks between Russia and Ukraine later this week in Turkiye, the first in seven weeks, is welcome news. The two belligerents sitting down at the negotiating table is crucial to end the almost three and a half years of conflict, as there is unlikely to be a decisive victory for one side or the other on the battlefield for the time being.Exactly when the talks will take place is unclear. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Monday that the next round of peace talks will be held in Turkiye on Wednesday. However, Russia's TASS news agency quoted a source as saying that the third round of talks will take place on Thursday.Regardless of when the talks take place, that both sides are willing to engage in direct peace talks is still significant as negotiations are the only way to resolve the conflict. More than three years since the fighting commenced, the death toll and suffering show no sign of abating. An end to the fighting and a lasting settlement would serve the interests of both countries and the rest of the world.Given the complexity of the Ukraine crisis and the big divide between the two sides — Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the two sides' positions were "diametrically opposed" — if the upcoming talks are to yield any positive results, both Moscow and Kyiv need to demonstrate flexibility. So far, Ukraine and Russia have held two rounds of talks in Istanbul, on May 16 and June 2, which led to the exchange of thousands of prisoners of war and the remains of dead soldiers. The lack of progress in making a breakthrough toward a ceasefire has not only disappointed the entire world but also eroded the patience of the United States administration, which was previously optimistic about cracking open the stalemate in talks.Greater international consensus and coordination are needed to consolidate the global commitment to resolving the Ukraine crisis through dialogue and negotiations. Yet, instead of shoring up such a consensus, some parties involved in the crisis are sowing seeds of division by staging a blame game unwarrantedly targeting third parties. In the latest deepening of its sanctions regime against Russia, the European Union on Friday adopted its 18th package of sanctions, which included imposing sanctions on some Chinese entities, with the EU claiming they have links with Russia's military operation in Ukraine. Two Chinese financial institutions have been targeted too, with the EU claiming they "helped circumvent EU sanctions".These sanctions have no basis in international law and are not authorized by the United Nations Security Council. The EU's ill-advised decision will have a negative impact on China-EU economic and trade relations and financial cooperation. A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman criticized the move, calling it "unacceptable".Prior to this, the US administration also threatened to impose 100 percent tariffs on countries that do business with Russia if there is no peace deal to end the war in Ukraine within 50 days.Such attempts to dictate alignment with a set position do a disservice to efforts to promote a fair settlement of the Ukraine crisis. The EU and US should engage in some deep soul-searching about the root cause of the Ukraine crisis and the reasons for the protracted conflict, rather than indiscriminately assigning blame to others for a crisis that is largely of their making. It is known to all that NATO's relentless eastward expansion and Western orchestrated "color revolutions" on Russia's periphery have been primary causes of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The Ukraine crisis cannot be allowed to go on indefinitely. Relevant parties should discard selfish calculations and join hands with other members of the international community to push for a peaceful solution to the conflict while the window of opportunity remains open.

Two Chinese students have been accused of sneaking into the country a potential “agroterrorism weapon.” It's a biological pathogen that could be used to devastate America's agriculture and food supply and harm those who consume it. The question occurs: How many others among the 270,000 PRC nationals studying in this country might be engaged in similar missions? Or, for that matter, the tens of thousands of suspected Chinese soldiers now here? The truth is no one knows. But what is certain is that all of them are obliged to engage in such activity – or worse – if the Chinese Communist Party orders them to do so. The Trump administration is trying to send the students home. The President needs to inform the public about the danger posed by – and enlist its help in finding and enabling the removal of – the soldiers, too. This is Frank Gaffney.

The Scorpio First Quarter Moon (Aug. 12, 8:19 am PDT, 20º24' Scorpio-Leo) is on the Sabian symbol 21 Scorpio, A soldier derelict in his duty, and the Sun is on 21 Leo, Chickens intoxicated. Take a stripped-down, focused action on those Leo New Moon intentions. [3:25] This is the First Quarter in a lunar phase family cycle (LPFC) that began on Nov. 13, 2023, at the New Moon at 20º43' Scorpio. The Full Moon in this LPFC comes on May 12, 2025, the Last Quarter on Feb. 9, 2026. [4:50] Void-of-Course (VOC) Moon periods. On Aug. 13 (2:01 am PDT), the Moon in Scorpio trines Neptune. It's VOC for one hour and then enters Sagittarius (3:01 am PDT). If you are recognizing deception or trouble as it comes your way, that is a reward in and of itself. [5:59] On Aug. 15 (9:52 am PDT), the Moon in Sagittarius trines Mercury in Leo. The Moon will be VOC for about an hour, then enters Capricorn (10:51 am PDT). This combination can help us get our point across to others by being imaginative, clever, and presenting things in an engaging way. [7:03] On Aug. 17 (1:43 pm PDT), the Moon in Capricorn sextiles Neptune. It's VOC for about an hour, then enters Aquarius (2:44 pm PDT). Review habits and instigate new habits related to creating practical structures that guide intuition, creativity, and vision. [7:45] Mars conjuncts Jupiter on Aug. 14 (8:21 am PDT, 16º40' Gemini). Go ahead and multi-task but don't give in to scattered thinking and actions. [9:17] Mars squares Saturn at 17º42' Gemini and Pisces on Aug. 15 (10:30 pm PDT). The Sabian symbol for Mars is 18 Gemini, Two Chinese men converse in their native tongue, while Saturn is on 18 Pisces, A gigantic tent. Making progress could be slow and full of obstacles but in the end, integrity and inclusivity are achieved. [11:41] Mercury retrograde reenters Leo on Aug. 14 (5:15 pm PDT) and during this time it will be recovering the territory that it covered July 17-25. On Sep. 8, 2024, Mercury recovers this same territory again. Now is the time to get clarity on some projects that were dropped previously. [12:29] Mercury retrograde squares Uranus (Aug. 18, 2:47 am PDT) at 27º10' Leo and Taurus. Mercury is on Sabian symbol, Many little birds on a limb of a large tree. Think back to around July 21; if any technical or communicative issues were unresolved then, use this aspect to find a solution. [13:58] Mercury conjuncts the Sun on Aug. 18 (6:58 pm PDT, 26º35' Leo) on the Sabian symbol 27 Leo, Daybreak. When Mercury is about 17' of arc within conjunction with the Sun, it's in a powerful condition called “cazimi.” At this conjunction, that's between about 3:30 pm and 10:45 pm PDT. If any communications or technical projects fell off the radar around July 22, use this cazimi period to tackle them. [16:13] Venus squares Jupiter (Aug. 18, 10:53 pm PDT) at 17º21' Virgo and Gemini. Do not write “big idea” checks that Venus in Virgo has to cash. [18:05] Listeners Julie and Twirl ask questions about fixed stars, specifically Alphecca and Algol.
