On this week's encore episode of Inside Appalachia, we're dedicating the show to children's authors. Hear from Cynthia Rylant, author of “When I Was Young In The Mountains,” “Messy Larry” author David J. Perri and storytelling champion Bil Lepp reading from his children's book “The Princess And The Pickup Truck.” We'll also hear Lyn Ford -- a professional storyteller and children's educator -- telling a story she wrote, called "The Old Woman and Death." We learn that while these stories are written for children, they carry messages for all of us, even grown-ups.
Appalachian storyteller Lyn Ford shares how Rabbit focuses on being positive in order to face the negative aspects of life.
How do we use our individual power? Do we use it for good, to lift those around us? Or do we use it for destruction? Lyn Ford tells a story of fire and rain and how their actions affect others.

Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. There's something really great about having a sense of community. The people that surround us can add a lot of color into our lives. Whether you grew up surrounded by neighborhood cookouts, family gatherings, or just like to spend time with loved ones, everybody loves to feel that sense of belonging. One of everyone's favorite neighbors has to be our friend Mr. Rogers, who once said “all of us, at some time or other, need help… that's one of the things that connects us as neighbors – in our own way, each one of us is a giver and a receiver.” Isn't that the beauty of having good neighbors? On today's episode, enjoy the following: “Porque el gallo canta en la mañana: Why Rooster Crows in The Morning” by Carrie Sue Ayvar from Cuéntame un cuento: Tell Me A Story (3:13) Radio Family Journal: "Bucket of Fish" by Sam Payne (14:19) The Daily Mix: "Cooking for Forty" with Jenna Parker (19:49) “Chili Cookoff” by Jennie Goldsberry (27:24) “Kanzo's Garden” by Lyn Ford from When The Gourd Broke: Common Sense Stories (41:36)
Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. What are the examples in your lives? We all have role models that have shaped who we are, what we like, and what we want to become. Examples are important, because they can show us what's possible. There are, of course, bad examples, but we can use even those to learn what paths we should not go down. This means that we need to be sure what kind of example someone is when we decide to follow their footsteps. How can we do that? The answer may not be simple, but we have some stories today about examples, tricks, and consequences. On today's episode, enjoy the following: “Run!” by Lyn Ford from Rabbit Tales, Too: Family, Foes, and Friends (1:47) The Radio Family Journal: "Oil Cap" by Sam Payne (14:13) The Daily Mix: “Raising Arizona” with Bil Lepp (19:10) “The Story Behind the Story” by Donna Ingham from Historically Speaking (26:55) “The Gift” by Michael Katz from Far Away and Close to Home: Magical and Mystical Tales from Around the World (34:42) “The Night Toddler” by Andy Offutt Irwin from Crowd Control (44:00)
Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. There's something magical about a celebration. Some parties are filled with bright lights, color, and dancing, while others are filled with giving thanks and spending time with friends and family. At times we celebrate to remember and appreciate our loved ones. At others, we celebrate special achievements or happy news. Whatever the reason for our celebration, there's just something about it that brings us joy. In today's stories, we'll get to see our characters celebrating one thing or another. On today's episode, enjoy the following: “Nonantzin, Mother Earth” by Valentina Ortiz from Earth Stories (2:02) Radio Family Journal: "Risk Assessment" by Sam Payne (18:21) The Daily Mix: "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" with Rod Gustafson (23:51) “The Tale of a Kokeshi Doll” by Motoko from Tales of Now and Zen (31:21) “The Sing” by Lyn Ford from Rabbit Tales, Too: Families, Foes, and Friends (47:16)

Have you ever been tricked? Fooled? Bamboozled? Certainly everyone has experienced being deceived at least once. And usually it's not a very pleasant feeling. It can be rather frustrating, and, well, humiliating. That being said, have you ever tricked someone else? Again, most people have. That's probably why there are so many stories about people being tricked. Today we have brought you a few of those stories from tellers like David Holt, Donna Washington, and James Bruchac. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“The Chenoo” by James Bruchac from When the Chenoo Howls (9:18)“Mexico City Subway” by Rick Huddle from Citizen of the World (4:17)“Why you Never Hear Rabbit Play Banjo” by David Holt from Why the Dog Chases the Cat: Great Animal Stories (7:44)“Ti Jean and the Donkey's Egg” by Priscilla Howe from Chickens! It's been a crazy year, the kind where we look for any source of joy and laughter we can to be relieved of daily stresses. Often times, that joy and laughter is found in the fascinating people around us. If you've ever people-watched in a park, or in the waiting room at a doctor's office, or at any family reunion, you know that this world is full of quirky, beautiful people. Their actions, ideas, stories, and perspectives enrich life, and make the hard times light-hearted with their authenticity. Today's stories will move us all to smile at the quirky and fascinating characters of the world. We'll hear stories of rascals that steal from others' gardens, talented game players with beautiful Jewish traditions, and magical beings that spin feathers into fine cloth. Each story will make us a little happier with the sway of its song and the energy of its teller. On today's episode, enjoy the following:"Spin the Dreidel" by Mark Binder from A Chanukah Present (7:30)In our first story, storyteller and writer Mark Binder, who was recently nominated for an Audie Award, tells a story of a young boy so talented at the game of spinning the dreidel that a man is willing to gamble all he owns – even the man's own daughter's hand in marriage – on a dreidel game against the boy. The young boy, having promised his skills would one day win him a wife, agrees to the match. Stay tuned to see who wins as Mark regales us with Spin the Dreidel, from his album A Chanukah Present. "The Boy Who Hated Latkes" by Mark Binder from A Holiday Present (4:54)In this next piece, we've got a second story from the great Mark Binder today, where he tells of his son who passionately hates latkes. Latkes are a potato pancake fried in oil, and to this day, Mark's son refuses to eat them. Listen in on the origins of his son's distaste for this delicious Jewish treat as Mark tells The Boy Who Hated Latkes, from his album A Holiday Present. "Japanese Folk Story" by Brenda Wong Aoki from Timp 2017 (8:14)We've talked games, we've talked food, now we'll talk love and greed! Producer, playwright, and storyteller Brenda Wong Aoki tells the story of Su, a beautiful woman with a magical gift and a husband who doesn't know the origins of that gift. Su is able to fabricate beautiful cloth for her husband to sell, but when she makes the cloth, her husband isn't allowed to enter the room. One day, in a spurt of greed, Su's husband breaks this rule, and is bewildered by what he finds. Lean in close as Brenda tells her Japanese Folk Story, from the album Timp 2017. "John the Rabbit/Wolf's Garden" by Lyn Ford from An Evening at Cedar Creek (13:40)Ohio-born storyteller and teacher Lyn Ford explores the story of John, a rabbit who longs to eat up whole garden. One day, John the Rabbit attempts to eat up Wolf's garden, but finds he must learn Wolf's musical password to enter the garden gate. Find out what exactly Wolf's garden gate password is as Lyn tells John the Rabbit/Wolf's Garden, from her album An Evening at Cedar Creek. "Dancing Granny (Carribean Folktale)" by Eshu Bumpus from Dancing Granny and Other Tales to Boogie to (8:05) Award-winning storyteller and jazz vocalist Eshu Bumpus, regales us with a story of Anansi, a lazy trickster who just keeps getting pulled from his TV by a family who demands to be fed. Anansi devises a plan to start stealing from the garden of the neighboring granny by luring her with a perfect song to boogie to. Anansi starts singing a jig and gets Granny dancing right out of her garden long enough for him to raid it. But Granny won't take these tricks for long. Find out how she fights him off in Eshu's Dancing Granny (Carribean Folktale) from his album Dancing Granny and Other Tales to Boogie to. Radio Family Journal: "Grandpa's Costumes" (5:16)It's been a fun hour getting to know all sorts of quirky characters, like sly rabbits and dancing grannies. All this quirkiness reminds Sam of a quirky character from his life. Here's another entry into his Radio Family Journal.
Nature holds a language just as we as humanity hold languages. Each of these stories connects to some part of nature - from including lines of French, Spanish and English, to talking about the birds and turtles and the languages of plants. There are always things we can learn from these wonderful creatures of nature. And if we stop and listen, perhaps we'll be able to hear them whisper to us. In this episode you'll hear stories of all of these things and more, so stop and listen and maybe these stories can give you clues into what nature sounds like. On today's episode, enjoy the following:“The Gift“ by Michael Katz from Far Away and Close to Home: Magical and Mystical tales from Around the World (9:18)In this story the sun disappears after being forgotten by the people of earth. And the people then try singing to the sun with musicians to make him happy and bring him back. Will it work? Well, that's the story. And it's a bilingual adventure that you're sure to love. “Kanzo's Garden” by Lyn Ford from When the Gourd Broke Common Sense Stories (14:50)In this story you'll meet Kanzo, an extraordinarily gifted gardener, who is also very greedy. He builds a high fence to keep creatures out, even down to the smallest beetle. The story is about how the animals and birds try to make a plan to get some food from Kanzo's garden. “Moon and Sun” by Sean K. Buvala from Calling Out The Rising Sun: Stories for Teenage Guys (2:15)This is a short tale about the jealousy that exists between the moon and the sun. Jealousy because, after all, in this story the moon and the sun are siblings. “Thunder and Lightning” by Martha Hamilton with Mitch Weiss from How & Why Stories World Tales Kids Can Tell (2:46)This is a story called "Thunder and Lightning". Did you know that thunder and lightning were a ram and a sheep? Well, that's what this story says. And here's Martha Hamilton and Mitch Weiss. “Clytie” by Martha Hamilton with Mitch Weiss from Stories in My Pocket Tales Kids Can Tell (3:34)Martha sticks around to tell us a greek myth. The story of "Clytie", a girl who couldn't stop staring at the sun. “Wood & Nails” by Michael Reno Harrell from Tales and Tunes (5:28)Now we're going to hear from Michael Reno Harrell. This is a little tale and tune about a rainstorm and a house. This was recorded live during a house concert for friends. “The Tale of Shadow and Light” by Barry Stewart Mann from The Improbably Love of Ethel and Elmer and Other Offbeat Tales of Romance (2:30)Up next is Barry Stewart Mann with a story about the once wonderful friendship between shadow and light. “Talking With The Lights On” by Donald Davis from A Room of My Own (7:09)A lot of the stories we brought you this hour have to do with lessons learned from nature: thunder and lighning, the sun and the moon, shadow and light. We thought we'd bring you one more lesson story. This one a lesson learned from playing in the Junior High band, and it's from "The Dean", Donald Davis.

Lyn Ford says that breaking into storytelling isn't quite the description that fits the beginnings of her career. It was more like leaping off the edge of a cliff, with all the materials to build a strong glider that would carry her wherever she should go, but no blueprint or directions on how to build the thing.
