In today's episode, I sat down with Mary Hamilton, Global Lead for Accenture's Connected Innovation Centers, to explore how the landscape of artificial intelligence is shifting. As we mark the 25th anniversary of Accenture's Technology Vision report, this year's insights reveal a profound transition into an era of AI-powered autonomy—reshaping how enterprises operate and how people and technology work together. Mary took us inside the key findings from the Tech Vision 2025 report, which is centered on the growing role of AI as a true partner rather than just a tool. From acting as a co-developer to becoming a brand ambassador and even powering robotics in the physical world, AI is on a fast trajectory toward becoming a foundational layer across every business function. However, Mary made it clear that technology alone isn't enough. Without trust in the systems being built, none of this innovation will land as intended. As she shared, building confidence in AI must be both cognitive and emotional—leaders must ensure that AI systems behave in expected, transparent ways and that people feel confident in their interactions with them. We also discussed how enterprises can harness what Accenture calls "cognitive digital brains" through multi-agent systems that enable intent-driven rather than instruction-led technology. Mary unpacked how these architectures, combined with AI platforms like GenWizard and SynOps are already transforming how companies create, operate, and innovate. We explored how brands can differentiate themselves in an AI-first world, where intelligent systems increasingly mediate customer interactions. She explained that one of the most significant risks is that ever sounds sound the same unless companies inject their values and personality into their AI experiences. We also touched on the rise of general-purpose robots, which have gained specialist capabilities and brought flexibility to logistics and manufacturing. Through examples with companies like KION and Schaeffler, Mary described a future where AI-enhanced robots work alongside humans in more agile, adaptive ways Finally, we tackled the human side of adoption. Mary shared why upskilling employees, giving them time to experiment, and aligning culture with AI goals are vital for lasting impact. Measuring success in this space requires more than cost savings or productivity gains. Ethical compliance, trust-building, and workforce empowerment are also essential signals that businesses are moving in the right direction. So, what does it take to turn AI from a buzzword into a practical driver of reinvention? How can leaders build a digital foundation ready for a future defined by autonomy and intelligence? Tune in to hear how Accenture is answering those questions—and helping the enterprise world do the same.

Jane Eyre and Shirley by Charlotte Bronte both refer to the unrest in Yorkshire which took place in the early years of the nineteenth century as new technology threatened jobs in the mills. Literary historian Sophie Coulombeau discusses parallels between the Luddites and concerns over AI now, and looks at what is real and what is fictional in the novels studied by Jonathan Brockbank of the University of York. Tania Shew shares some of the accounts of strikes outside the workplace which she has uncovered in her research. These include a charity worker strike and school strikes organised by pupils in 1911. How far do they strike a chord with more modern strike action? Dr Jonathan Brockbank is a Lecturer in Modern Literature at the University of York who is exploring Luddite protests and their depiction in literature. Dr Tania Shew is the holder of the Isaiah Berlin Junior Research Fellowship at Wolfson College, Oxford researching the women's suffrage movement. Mary L. Hamilton began writing for publication when her children were young. She sold articles to Christian magazines and later wrote a play for her church's women's ministry outreach. That play sparked her passion for fiction even as it humbled her to see it performed. She says, “I gave them words in black and white and they put skin and clothes on those words. They brought black and white to life in Technicolor.” By that time, her three children had quit taking naps and she couldn't find a regular time to write when she wasn't falling asleep. She gave up writing until her youngest was in school and then concentrated on writing fiction. Her first novels drew from her experience growing up at a Christian youth camp. The Rustic Knoll Bible Camp series for young teens tells the stories of three hurting teens who bring their “baggage” to camp and find that Jesus can lift their burdens. Since then Mary has written novels of mystery and suspense and plans to write more general stories for women. She has lived in Texas most of her adult life, and when she's not writing, she enjoys knitting, playing with her dog, and a little phone photography. Look for her on Instagram or Facebook She loves hearing from readers so feel free to contact her at mary@maryhamiltonbooks.com

Venanzio Rauzzini, Fanny Burney, and Mr Foote are figures who come up in today's Free Thinking discussion as the hit period drama Bridgerton returns to Netflix for a second series and Shahidha Bari explores what kept the Georgians entertained, from a night at the opera to music lessons at home, strolls in the pleasure gardens, hot air balloons, chess playing Turks, and perhaps most of all - if Lady Whistledown is to be believed - gossip, intrigue, and scandal. Just what is it about the Georgians that we find so enduringly entertaining? Shahidha's guests are: musicologist Brianna Robertson-Kirkland who has written a new book about Venanzio Rauzzini, a scandal ridden Italian castrato revered by Mozart who fled the continent to become one of Georgian England's most celebrated singing teachers and a musical figurehead in the city of Bath. Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. Many people view promises in many different ways. In many a cowboy movie, a simple handshake was enough to seal an agreement in stone. Spy movies, on the other hand, hold many empty promises, betrayals, and treachery. Ideally, everyone would keep their promises, but that's unfortunately not the case. That's why we have to sign documents when we promise to pay back a loan, or to seal a contract of any kind. The sad reality is that some people have no intention of keeping their promises, even while making them. There are some promises, however, that should never be broken because the consequences would simply be too great. We have some stories about broken promises today, along with many others from tellers like Bil Lepp, Dan Keding, and more. On today's episode, enjoy the following: “The Banjo Player of Franceville” by Dan Keding from Promises Kept, Promises Broken (4:46) The Daily Mix: “Turn to Stone” with Mark Wait (18:04) “Kate Crackernuts” by Mary Hamilton from Sisters All...And One Troll (26:39) “The King of Little Things” by Bil Lepp from King of Little Things (47:05)

Welcome to The Apple Seed! Some time filled with stories for you and your family. Since 2013 we've been bringing you tall tales, personal tales, fairy tales, historical tales and more. All kinds of tales, from all kinds of tellers. One of the most prevalent traditions in storytelling around the world is that of tricksters. It's always so much fun to watch Anansi the Spider pull one over on Lion, or Tom Sawyer con the other boys into doing his chores. As tricksters lay traps, however, sometimes they find that they end up being the one caught in the trap. In today's stories, we'll get to see tricksters at work fooling other people, or getting fooled themselves, and even by themselves. This episode, Shadé Zahrai interviews Mary Hamilton. Mary is the CEO of Hugh Hamilton Wines, Australia's oldest wine family. She is also a Board Member of the McLaren Vale Grape Wine and Tourism Association and Board Member of the Women's and Children's Hospital Foundation. She was also the Worldwide Business Director of McCann Erickson. Valuable Discussion Points (01:26) What is the story of Mary's leadership journey? Mary's journey started as a little girl. She was always dressing up and pulling out pages of gorgeous Vogue magazines and holding all the ads together in special folders. This led her where she went because she went to school and she did work experience with a very specific goal in mind. She has been on quite a journey. Some of those things weren't intended and some were and everything had its purpose along the way. (12:15) What was Mary's main drive when she was early on in her career? She was just really grateful to be able to learn so much from good people and to see wonderful, important brands and important campaigns just coming to fruition. She shares a story that one day, the chief executive put out a call and said, is there anybody in this business that knows anything about wine? Mary comes from a wine family, she has been around wine her whole life. The CEO was establishing a pitch team and asked her to join the team, she said yes, sure but she has got one condition. If they win the pitch, she wants to run the account. (22:17) What important career advice did Mary receive, which was pivotal for her? The vice chancellor of the university gave Mary career advice. She was finishing and going to be out in the big wide world. Mary asked him for some advice on how to tackle leaving uni and going out and starting her career. And the vice chancellor asked her a really fundamental question, do you want to be organisational or do you want to be entrepreneurial? Key Learnings It's a female thing that we often feel as though we've got to be really well rehearsed to go for stuff. It's maybe a little bit of a female curse. And it's because we've got great emotional intelligence often that we feel as though we really should be the real deal. But Mary thinks that can also be a handicap, because sometimes you get passed over because you just didn't jump into the void. Mary added a fifth P to the 4Ps of marketing to the Leadership Toolbox. Aside from the 4Ps of marketing, promotion, product, price and place, Mary added people as being a fifth and important part of marketing. People is about knowing who you are, who you appeal to, what your purpose is and what you offer. Quotable Quotes “Some of those things weren't intended and some were. And everything's kind of, I think, had its purpose along the way.” – Mary Hamilton “And it just made me think you don't always have to be ready to ship to be able to ship. We’re back! Erin and Shelley discuss Batwoman season 1, episode 17 “A Narrow Escape.” Alice and Mouse establish themselves as major players in Arkham with impressive speed, Luke finds out who kills his dad, and Sophie and Julia are definitely going to kiss soon! Most importantly, the love of our lives, Mary Hamilton, tells Kate that she knows she’s Batwoman in a hope speech that would give Kara Danvers a run for her money. You can find us on Twitter! Professional storytellers Mary Hamilton and Cynthia Changaris join host Bill Goodman for this week's remote episode of THINK HUMANITIES. They share about the enduring importance of stories, how stories equip us for life, and ways that parents and kids can share stories together.
In today's Apple Seed Extra, we'll introduce you to "Ashpet," an American Cinderella story. You'll find one of the story's villains familiar if you listened to our recent “Wiley and the Hairy Man” episode. That's right: It's the Hairy Man!
We discuss Batwoman season 1, episode 14 “Grinning from Ear to Ear.” Things happened in this episode, but Erin and Shelley aren’t sure what they were, because they have been crying into their pillows ever since they saw the FULLY SKINNED FACE of Duela. We do our best to recap the episode for you, and we obviously make time to express our continued undying affection for Mary Hamilton, but can everyone please just keep their f$%&ing faces on for five minutes? Once we get over the face thing, we discuss our feelings on the Sophie/Batwoman romance (is it ethical?), and we share our thoughts on Sophie’s coming out storyline. You can find us on Twitter! We discuss Batwoman season 1, episode 12 “Take Your Choice.” Shelley and Erin get sad about Beth’s fate and then get very scared about Alice’s renewed sense of hatred toward Kate. Was this Alice’s last chance at redemption? As always, we gush about how great Mary Hamilton is and beg the show to just let Mary in on the secret. We also take a moment to appreciate Alice’s hallucination of Catherine Hamilton. She was so fierce in her imaginary heels. Things are getting intense, y’all. You can find us on Twitter! We discuss Batwoman season 1, episode 11 “An Un-Birthday Present.” Erin and Shelley were hoping they wouldn’t have to bring back the podcast motto “keep your f#$%ing face on,” but here we are again. This episode had everything: Beth, Alice, Beth as Alice, people impaled on rebar, people setting cars on fire (apparently the wrong way), Kate getting hit by a truck (again), and Mary Hamilton being the smart and emotionally evolved queen we all know and love. We always have the choice between cruelty and compassion. This week, the 5th circuit chose cruelty. Jesus reminds us, always, that though we cannot control the outcome of our actions, we can scatter seeds and find, unexpectedly, that they may bloom. A Dark Knight loyalist and son of Wayne's R&D director Lucius Fox, Luke works to keep Wayne Tower secure in his boss's absence. Kang is Mary Hamilton. Mary is Kate Kane's step-sister and polar opposite. https://deadline.com/2019/01/batwoman-meagan-tandy-camrus-johnson-nicole-kang-to-star-in-the-cw-pilot-dc-1202541983/ FEEDBACK YouTube: From YouTube: Pfruit0916 I thought this was a decent episode but had entirely too much Rene. That being said, it did get me invested in Emiko & her hunt for her mother's killer. I'm going ahead and predicted that this Dante person, Dig & Lyla are investigating is also responsible for Kazumi's death. Dante/his organization obviously has resources since he paid the long bow hunters for Diaz, so he would be able to commit a murder and set someone else up for it. I'm glad the reveal of Emiko came very quickly. Felicity was able to figure out that it was Thea who killed Sara based on olivers DNA markers in s3 so if she didn't figure this out I would have been annoyed. Oliver's reaction to the news made complete sense. He knows he parents have made questionable choices but they loved him and Thea. So of course it would be hard to reconcile that the same parents who died to protect him would then abandon Emiko. I really enjoyed The olicity interactions this episode. In 7x08 a big part of their conflict was that she changed and as Oliver said, He fell in love with the old Felicity. And she said she couldn't go back to being the girl he met with the red pen. I think she just needed reassurance that he could accept this new version of her. He gave her that in the crossover, when he said no matter who she grew into he would love her. Now they can move forward as a team. The DNA recognition security system that felicity installed in their apartment may be in the first step toward the Archer program that's mentioned in the future. Also, I found it interesting that Curtis was the only team arrow member not mentioned as having the Mark of Four. I have a feeling he's dying at some point this season. Lastly, since the show seems to be shifting to Arrow Jr. with the hero's kids showing up I'm wondering when we will see grown up JJ. With a global network of content moderators, it seems that Facebook might be the largest employer of community professionals in the world. But even with these resources, their content moderation practices continue to make headlines. Outsourcing this work barely seems to help Facebook keep up with the volume of content that needs to be reviewed, not to mention the toll that this takes on the often undervalued and underpaid people that are responsible for it. To this Ben Whitelaw, the engagement lead for the Engaged Journalism Accelerator, asks when Facebook is going to start taking bigger risks to solve this problem? While Facebook’s moderation practices have lots of room for improvement, Ben also shares how the platform proved to be an asset when Times readers needed a space for discourse around Brexit. For newsrooms organizing communities today, Ben shares that Facebook’s ease of use makes it easy to spin up new groups and show proof of concept, but that this isn’t a full solution for long-term reader engagement. Patrick and Ben also discuss: How Brexit played out in comments section at The Times and led to internal advocacy for readers Scaling the work of moderation and the importance of consistency and credibility in community management Whether or not big platforms like Facebook should be allowed to self-moderate Big Quotes On public policy playing out in the comments: “Our columnists who wrote about Brexit would get 1,200 comments on an article. … Some of [the comments] were very good. Some of them were very informed. The Times has got a pretty interested and educated audience. You would have lawyers and people who work in policy, people who are civil servants often anonymous, comment on intricacies of Brexit, and it made for very interesting discussion. … There was a real passion for the topic and a need for it to be heard. Obviously, in hindsight, we see that … legacy media in the UK didn’t really highlight some of the voices of people outside London who were wanting Brexit to happen, and that was playing out in the comment threads under articles.” -@benwhitelaw The potential impact of governance of the web: “I am afraid that Facebook will trigger something legally that will harm online communities as a whole. I think we sometimes forget that the vast majority of online communities do not have Facebook’s problems and are probably fairly well managed and are one person operations with volunteers. … Government intervention, if it happens, really needs to be targeted at people above a certain scale, above a certain size. … If it falls hard on small communities, it’s really going to stifle a lot of voices.” -@patrickokeefe About Ben Whitelaw Ben Whitelaw is the engagement lead for the Engaged Journalism Accelerator, a program run out of the European Journalism Centre, where he is responsible for the growth and engagement of grantees and content programming. The Accelerator is a $1.7m program that provides funding, mentoring, resources and events to support a more participative kind of journalism across European news organizations of all sizes. It recently announced its first twelve funded news organizations. The program is supported by the News Integrity Initiative at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism and Civil, the blockchain-enabled journalism community. Prior to joining the accelerator, he was head of audience development at The Times and The Sunday Times in London. Over seven years there, he built an award-winning team, ran several high profile editorial campaigns, including Cities fit for Cycling, and helped both newsrooms reach 500,000 subscribers before leaving in 2018. Ben has also worked at The Guardian as a health and government IT journalist and set up Wannabe Hacks, a online platform dedicated to helping young journalists get into the industry. He writes a weekly newsletter about content moderation on the web and the policies, people and platforms that make it happen. Inevitably, it is called “Everything in Moderation“. In the spirit of, 'we're tired and we're not gonna take it anymore,' Ms. Mary Hamilton absolutely personified what it means to demand respect. In the face of a U.S. legal system that was being used to demean her, she stood for her rights, and by extension, the rights of us all.

According to our guest on this episode, much of the news industry is engaged in a battle they can’t win, a fight over eyeballs and ad revenue with companies like Google and Facebook, where the terms will get worse and worse as time goes by. The answer? Community. By building a community that values the work that they create, they can wrestle back some of the control over their audience and receive support directly from the people who consume and appreciate the product they are creating. Andrew Losowsky is the project lead of The Coral Project, a collaboration between Mozilla, The New York Times and The Washington Post, that is helping news organizations build better communities and more loyal readers through tools, research and strategy. Among our topics: Forcing a layer of community over traditional journalism vs. providing newsrooms with a cogent plan Why they are building Talk, an open source comments platform Are news organizations better served by hiring another reporter… or a community pro? Our Podcast is Made Possible By… If you enjoy our show, please know that it’s only possible with the generous support of our sponsor: Higher Logic. Big Quotes “[Forcing community on newsrooms] is saying to journalists that they have to spend time in the comments without actually giving them the tools or the training to be able to do so effectively. … It looks like saying, ‘You need to ask your readers for help’ or ‘You need to crowdsource this’ or ‘Why don’t you go and talk to people at this event or in these comments?,’ without actually giving any strategy or thought to it. What you end up with is journalists who are very resentful of having another task placed on top of them. A task where they don’t see the connection between their journalistic work and this community work that they’re being asked to do.” -@losowsky “If you don’t understand and have a real commitment to community as part of your journalistic mission, as part of the strategy of what you’re trying to achieve in the totality of the newsroom, not just within one corner of the it, then it will, ultimately, always fail. We’ve seen this repeatedly. For me, a little part of me dies when I see that happen because what we’re really missing is the kinds of connections that journalism needs, in order to survive.” -@losowsky “Community is not a choice. The choice is what you do with it.” -@patrickokeefe “Right now, so much of the news industry’s revenue model is based around advertising and creating clickbait in order to get the numbers that will then get enough eyeballs on the advertising. I think this is a really shortsighted strategy. … Over half, I think, of the online advertising money goes directly to Facebook and Google. This is not a battle that the news industry is going to win. The terms are going to get worse and worse as you move forward from that. It really is antithetical to community because what you’re saying is, ‘I want people to come here, and I don’t care where they come from.’ Versus trying to build a community who value what we’re doing and will pay for it.” -@losowsky “If somebody flags a thousand times, and you’ve only ever deleted two of the comments they’ve flagged, then the next time they flag, maybe you don’t bring it straight to the moderator’s attention until somebody, who is more reliable as a flagger, does flag it. Then on the other side of that, if somebody is really good at flagging, if they flag 100 times and 90% of the time they end up flagging something that you end up deleting, they’re as good as our moderators. If they flag something, maybe we should just pull it for the moderator to look at immediately and just not have it there in the stream.” -@losowsky “The [real name] issue really comes down to whether or not people will behave better because of real names or maybe they will behave worse. If a name sounds like the person might identify as a woman, that can really change and worsen peoples’ behavior towards them. If there’s no way of hiding, if there’s no way of being anonymous, then you could be encouraging a great homogeneity in your community as a result, or/and encouraging different kinds of harassment and abuse.” -@losowsky About Andrew Losowsky Andrew Losowsky is originally from the UK and, since the age of 18, has lived in Hong Kong, Spain and now the U.S. In 2003, he became the editorial director of an indie Spanish editorial startup that built communities around original content. Andrew co-ran a biannual festival of independent publishing in Luxembourg, bringing together magazine makers from around the world. He has also been a John S. Real name policies aren’t new. Online communities, social networks and comment sections have attempted to require real names before and many still do. One of them is the CBC, Canada’s 80 year old national radio and public broadcaster. 7 months ago, they began “requiring” people to use their real names to comment online. The CBC’s Sam Lightowler joins the program to share her observations and discuss the viability of requiring real names. Plus: The CBC’s responsibility to facilitate comments, as Canada’s national broadcaster Should non-U.S. organizations be reluctant to hand their community building efforts over to U.S.-based platforms? How being state-owned makes the CBC different from privately-owned media organizations like The New York Times Big Quotes “70% of our audience said that commenting was important to them, and they thought that CBC, as the public broadcaster, should have comments. 12% said that we should remove comments altogether. 60% of our audience thought that CBC should have what they think is a ‘light touch’ on moderation – that we should keep an eye on audience submissions but only intervene in what they consider extreme scenarios.” -@sklightowler “70% of the CBC audience is spending 15% or more of their time engaging in the comment section. That means, to us, that comments are actually a huge contributor to that engagement metric that we’re trying to increase. People are not only interested in posting comments, but they’re interested in reading them. And it’s what’s keeping them on our pages longer.” -@sklightowler About Sam Lightowler Sam Lightowler is a product owner for web presentation at CBC in Toronto. For the past six years, she has worked on integrated digital products, beginning with social experiences and evolving to focus on web presentation.
