Crowd management is key to evacuation safety. Yet, evacuation simulation programmes often lack experimental verification due to the inadequacy of benchmarks with real-world experiments.Ilias Panagiotopoulus, Jens Starke, and Wolfram Just from the University of Rostock, Germany, have developed a model-free approach to analyse field experiments. This innovative method provides quantitative benchmarks and extends our understanding of crowd dynamics.Read more in Research FeaturesRead the original research: doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevResearch.4.043190

In this engaging episode, Tom and Simon reconnect to discuss various riveting cases and police strategies. Kicking off with the announcement that their live event at the Mitchell Library has sold out, they humorously banter about their upcoming appearances and the success of their TikTok video, which garnered nearly 60,000 views. The conversation transitions into serious territory as they delve into the latest work of their Deep Dive team, reviewing landmark cases such as Colin Pitchfork's, the first murder case solved using DNA. Tom elaborates on the significance of DNA in modern investigations and its dual role in convicting criminals and exonerating the innocent. The duo also discusses the London bombings, their impact on police procedures, and the tragic errors like the mistaken shooting of Jean Charles de Mendez. The historical “Siege of Sydney Street” is revisited, highlighting early 20th-century anarchist activities and the birth of media spectacles around crime. Next, they explore the profound ramifications of the Holly Wells and Jessica Chapman murder case by Ian Huntley, emphasizing how it exposed systemic flaws in intelligence sharing. Tom narrates the gripping 'Leith Outrages' case, an 1881 series of crimes committed by Australian outlaws in Edinburgh, underscoring the tenacity of the Leith Borough Police. Concluding with the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots in Chicago, they reflect on effective crowd control tactics and the consequences of Mayor Richard Daley's confrontational approach. In this special Chit Chat Wednesday episode of the JTrain Podcast, host Jared Freid sits down with comedian Jay Jordan for an engaging conversation about the evolving world of stand-up, navigating life on the road, and staying true to one's comedy roots. Just back from Australia, Jay shares his experience of traveling to develop new material despite no upcoming special. He reflects on the importance of cultivating authenticity in an industry driven by expectations and social media trends. The discussion delves into the rise of sanitized versions of ourselves in comedy, where both Jay and Jared express frustration with tech-driven approaches to stand-up. Jay explains the delicate balance between making a connection with an audience while not compromising one's artistic integrity. As the conversation flows, they explore how the business is shifting, particularly the role of social media management and its influence on the comedy industry. The two comedians also address the growing complexity of crowd work—where comedians once had full control over their interactions with the audience, but now find themselves navigating the delicate line between performance and real-time engagement. The episode also tackles personal and professional growth, with Jay offering candid commentary on his marriage, the challenges and joys it brings, and how it relates to his comedic journey. From the ups and downs of married life to the absurdity of fashion choices in snow-covered locations, the two dive into a playful and thoughtful "Peaks and Pits" segment.Tune in for an entertaining and thought-provoking conversation about the intersection of comedy, social media, personal relationships, and the ever-shifting expectations of both comedians and audiences in the digital age.Support the podcast by supporting our sponsors!Support the show and get free salads for 2 months & 50% off yourfirst Green Chef box. What does good policing looks like when it comes to managing sometimes bristly human interactions at street protests or in rowdy sports stadiums? Writer Simon Montlake and photographer Alfredo Sosa learned in Columbus, Ohio, how police dialogue units can play a role. But is it sustainable, and transferable? How far might it extend in an era when violence and fear seem sometimes seem more prevalent than an openness to discourse? Hosted by Clay Collins.

Does this sound familiar? The final moments of your lesson feel chaotic... unfinished, rushed work, students hovering by the door, mess everywhere, disruption, noise, and disorganisation leaving you feeling overwhelmed and frustrated? If this sounds all too familiar, you are not alone. The good news is that with consistent, simple exit routines, you can transition out of your lesson calmly and purposefully without feeling like a bouncer at the door.IN THIS EPISODE, I DISCUSS:1. Why exit routines are essential:Small, consistent steps at the end of a lesson do more than tidy up; they reinforce engagement, help wrap up the learning, and make classroom transitions less stressful.2. My 3 non-negotiable exit routines:Self-reflection for early finishers – Teach students to ask, "Am I really done?" with an anchor chart that encourages independence and self-checking.Plenaries that stick – Wrap up the learning in a way that reinforces key concepts and expectations without falling into the trap of "death by plenary."The ‘row by row you go' method – Use a clear, calm system for exiting the classroom that ensures it stays tidy and ready for the next group.3. Practical tools to streamline your routines:From self-reflection prompts to ready-to-go plenary resources, learn how to save time while keeping students engaged and ensuring smooth transitions. When you embed these three routines into every lesson, you can:✅ Reinforce behaviour and work expectations consistently✅ Avoid the chaos that often accompanies lesson endings✅ Create a calm, controlled environment that allows for smooth transitionsReady to take the stress out of your lesson endings? (The Center Square) – Seattle City Councilmember Cathy Moore has announced proposed reforms to limit the Seattle Police Department's use of blast balls for crowd control. Blast balls are rubber devices that create a loud sound and bright flash, and can also contain tear gas. Moore's reforms would be in the form of amendments for proposed Council Bill 120916, which is currently sitting in the Public Safety Committee. The bill would help the Seattle Police Department be in full compliance with a preliminary injunction regarding the department's crowd control measures.Support this podcast: https://secure.anedot.com/franklin-news-foundation/ce052532-b1e4-41c4-945c-d7ce2f52c38a?source_code=xxxxxxFull story: https://www.thecentersquare.com/washington/article_ebe9d3a8-cf9c-11ef-8d42-5b0c85ddb77f.html

Featuring: Ammosart, Ashgar, Belghast, Grace, Kodra, Tamrielo, and Thalen Hey Folks! It has been a few weeks since we recorded a normal show and I think we had a bunch of conversation in us waiting to get out. As a result, we recorded a bit longer than we should have but that is okay! We talk about Celeste 64 and that sort of gameplay translates to a very Mario 64 inspired game. From there Kodra shares his experiences with Songs of Conquest a game that is very much a nostalgic continuation of the Heroes of Might and Magic Series. Bel and Kodra talk about their experiences with the other new survival early access game Enshrouded and how it is shockingly complete, and really just needs polish. From there we dive into the main topic of the show where we discuss City of Heroes and how it is this perfect snapshot of the best of MMORPGs before World of Warcraft changed everything. Finally, Bel actually completes his four voidstones in Path of Exile and talks about what a difference a dedicated bosser makes. Topics Discussed: Celeste 64 Songs of Conquest Enshrouded When Crowd Control Mattered City of Heroes The World before Warcraft No Daily Chores is Refreshing What a Difference a Bosser Makes Bel Kills POE Bosses

November 18, 1983 Put your '83 hat on and travel back to the days of yore when OZZY OSBOURNE was still a relatively new solo artist struggling to bounce back after enduring the tragic and untimely demise of guitarist Randy Rhoads following The Ozzman's first 2 legendary albums, Blizzard of Ozz and Diary of a Madman. Enter Jake E. Lee, Rhoads' successor, and the debut of his shred skills on Ozzy's 3rd studio release, BARK AT THE MOON. While perhaps a departure from those first 2 records with Rhoads, BARK AT THE MOON has a more keyboard centric, pop-oriented sound that left some fans confused, yet it was just another example of OZZY rising from the ashes like a phoenix and reinventing himself once again. Always remember to never write a song in the “afterglow” that you'll ultimately grow “So Tired” of. “Slow Down” before being aurally assaulted by some overly emphatic keyboards because it's time to get “laminated” and take “One Up The B-Side” after you “wash the evil off”. Find out what happens when you get “plastic surgery to look older”, embrace your “Olde Faece”, summon up your playlist of farts, and brace for the onslaught of our upcoming OnlyFans cooking page when you JOIN US as we dive into the “Centre of Eternity” that is BARK AT THE MOON. Dan Pink is the author of five New York Times bestsellers, including his latest, The Power of Regret. His other books include the New York Times bestsellers When and A Whole New Mind — as well as the #1 New York Times bestsellers Drive and To Sell is Human. Dan's books have won multiple awards, have been translated into 42 languages, and have sold millions of copies around the world. Dan also hosted and produced “Crowd Control,” a TV series on the National Geographic Channel that aired in more than 100 countries. He hosts a popular MasterClass on sales and persuasion, and he appears frequently on NPR, PBS, ABC, CNN, and other TV and radio networks in the US and abroad. He has been a contributing editor at Fast Company and Wired as well as a business columnist for The Sunday Telegraph. His articles and essays have also appeared in The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, The Atlantic, Slate, and other publications. Before venturing out on his own 20 years ago, Dan worked in several positions in politics and government, including serving as chief speechwriter to Vice President Al Gore from 1995 to 1997. He received a BA from Northwestern University and a JD from Yale Law School. In this episode we discuss the following: Just get started. So often we want to wait for the perfect time or conditions to do something. But in reality, the best way to find motivation to do things is to just get started. Acting creates motivation. If you don't feel like writing, but then you start writing, you will then feel like writing. Julius Erving: “Being a professional is doing what you love to do, even on the days you don't feel like doing it.” “If I decided that I was going to write when I was inspired, I would never write a word.” Instead, I show up in my office, I give myself a word count, and I don't do anything until I hit that number. Once I start writing I feel like writing. I wish someone had told me when I was younger that action created motivation. It took me a while to figure that out and put it in practice. Our intuition reverses the sequence. We think we have to feel a certain way to act, when in fact you can act your way into feelings. Don't wait until you feel like doing something to act. Act, and then in most cases, you'll feel like doing it. Start with generosity. In almost any interaction you have, lead with generosity. It makes us feel better, and there are also massive returns to us. If we make our default setting to be generous, we may have to switch off the default for some people, but most people are worthy of our generosity.
