In this podcast I sit down with Matt Drayer who is part of a small team including Greg Barton, Jesse Lishchuk, and Geoff Pearson who are dedicated to promoting surfski development in the US via the Ocean Racing Committee (ORC) which is part of the competition arm of the American Canoe Association (ACA). Matt and the team have been hard at work over the past year building out a National points based ranking system that allows competitors around the country to submit race results from any surfski race and earn points. They are also launching a pilot program to establish an athlete classification system, that will allow paddlers to progress along a continuum based on race performance over the long term. Last, but not least, the ORC is very much involved working with the International Canoe Federation (ICF) on the Surfski World Championships that are now held annually. This year they will be in Madeira Portugal. In this podcast we cover Matt's background, as well as go into detail on all of the above and what has inspired Matt and the team to take on this intitiatve. If you aren't yet a member, we encourage you to check out the ACA website and offerings. The organization has been around since 1880 representing a broad spectrum of paddle sports. In the last few years they have made a concerted effort to recognize and embrace surfski paddling, and they can bring a lot to the table to help us all promote this sport that we love so much! If you have any questions or suggestions for Matt, he can be reached at : orc@americancanoe.net

Hello to you listening in Madeira, Portugal!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds (and a bit more) for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.I taught a story workshop the other day. We began by recognizing that in its very simplest form a story is made up of 3 parts: something was (a routine) + something happened (a complication) + something is (a consequence or result).I remembered an event on the Camino de Santiago de Compostela. You must have a sturdy pair of trekking poles (or sticks) to help you navigate 500 miles of muddy, rocky, slippery, downhill slopes; equally steep, rocky, muddy, mountain passes, city streets that go on forever when you can barely take another step. Or maybe to just to lean on and catch your breath. Mine were red and I usually kept them close to hand.Until one day out on the Maseta, the flat dry plains of Spain that stretch to the horizon, I stopped at a café and left my sticks leaning against the outside wall. It's what we all did. But when I came out of the café my sticks were gone. Now what do I do? I have weeks of mountains to climb. The rains were on the way. How will I manage?I began to run in the direction I was headed. Running, in hiking boots, with a 15 pound backpack, feeling angry, self-pitying, disappointed in all pilgrims, and swearing a blue streak. Finally, I ran out of words, out of breath and stopped. I let it all go. What were sticks anyway but metal and rubber? I could likely buy another pair in some city up ahead. Just then I saw a woman swinging my sticks. I caught up to her, she handed them over without a word, I said Buen Camino! and walked on. Many things we experience in Life are little more than annoyments. Funny thing about Life: it provides when you least expect it and you're willing to allow it.Story Prompt: Sometimes what's lost will circle right back to you. When has that happened? Write that story! You're invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, would you subscribe, share a 5-star rating + nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!Meanwhile, stop by my Quarter Moon Story Arts website to:✓ Check out What I Offer,✓ Arrange your free Story Session call + Bonus gift,✓ Opt In to my monthly Newsletter for valuable tips & techniques to enhance your story work, and✓ Stay current with Diane and on LinkedIn.Stories From Women Who Walk Production TeamPodcaster: Diane F Wyzga & Quarter Moon Story ArtsMusic: Mer's Waltz from Crossing the Waters by Steve Schuch & Night Heron MusicAll content and image © 2019 to Present: for credit & attribution Quarter Moon Story Arts

Ever fantasize about living on an Island in the middle of an ocean? At some point you probably talked yourself out of it, believing that it would be too isolated, too expensive and too hot. According to Bill Strickland and Sam Palmer, the Portuguese island of Madeira, off the African coast, is none of those. Bill and Sam retired to the city of Funchal on Madeira in 2021 without ever having stepped foot on the island. The couple described Funchal as having the feel of an old European city, even though it is on an island and surrounded by beautiful mountainous land. It is no surprise that this archipelago has been called the Hawaii of Europe. Find out more about how Bill and Sam found their paradise, on Episode 89 of Retire There with Gil & Gene.

I am so stoked for today's interview because it's with none other than Goncalo Hall, the founder of the Digital Nomad Village initiative in Madeira, Portugal. If you haven't heard about this yet it was something that I covered in my weekly newsletter Nomad Insider a few months back. Madeira is a small Portuguese island off the coast of Morocco and while visiting there Goncalo realized that it would be an amazing place for digital nomads, so he got to work. During this interview, you will learn everything you need to know about the initiative and how Goncalo put it together plus just about everything you need to know in case you decide that living on an island in 2021 is exactly what you needed. We discussed everything from what the cost of living there is, how to find housing, internet speeds, and how to get there during COVID plus much much more.

Madeira is one of the most historic and famous winemaking regions of Portugal – but it is located 600 miles away from the capital Lisbon and 450 miles away from the North African coast. In short, it’s a rugged, mountainous archipelago that is just about as remote as you can find in the world, and yet by a twist of history, it has given its name to one of the most famous fortified wines in the world: Madeira. ***Subscribe to our Channels for more: *** ► YouTube: www.youtube.com/user/BEVERAGETRADENETWORK ► iTunes: itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/bevcast/ ► Stitcher: www.stitcher.com/s?fid=233919&refid=stpr
