Hello Rank Squad! We have our Champions League finalists, after PSG joined Inter in the showpiece event by beating Arsenal 2-1 at the Parc des Princes to progress 3-1 on aggregate. The game might not have had the verve and sparkle of Tuesday's semi, but there was plenty to discuss all the same here on UCL Takeaway. Arsenal started fast, but couldn't find the killer blow to leave the tie in the balance - thanks to some particularly impressive goalkeeping once again from Gigi Donnarumma in the PSG net - and then Fabian Ruiz landed a killer jab of his own, striking home from the edge of the box after Arsenal failed to clear a set piece. Vitinha missed a (very harsh) penalty, before Achraf Hakimi made it 2-0 with a striker's finish, and whilst Bukayo Saka pulled one back and Arsenal had their chances to find a leveller, it was Luis Enrique's charges who saw the game out, with no finishing flourish from his former apprentice Mikel Arteta in the other dugout. We discuss the game, as well as where it leaves Arsenal ahead of this summer, whether PSG's transformation into the team we have seen in recent months makes them favourites for the final, whether João Neves is a N'Golo Kante regen, where Arsenal need to upgrade to reach that next level, and loads more besides. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
Hello Rank Squad! It's time for Champions League Takeaway, your late night delivery following the action - following the second legs of the new 'Playoff Round' in the competition, pitting the teams who finished 9th to 24th in the league stage against each other to earn places in the Round of 16.Wednesday night saw the headline tie of the round - Real Madrid vs Manchester City - settled by a Kylian Mbappe masterclass, with the Frenchman scoring a brilliant hat-trick to put the game far beyond the reach of Pep Guardiola's men and eliminate a Pep side before the Round of 16 for the first time in his managerial career. We talk how far off it City were, and how with the No 9 firing, Real Madrid might well just be favourites once again. There's also a discussion of the most entertaining game of the evening - PSV's extra-time triumph over Juventus which made the Old Lady the third (of three) Italian sides knocked out in this playoff round - two to Dutch opponents, and the other from Belgium - it's a good time to be from the Low Countries! And we talk briefly about PSG's absolute demolition job of Stade Brestois, and Borussia Dortmund's very uneventful seeing off of Sporting CP. Then in Part Two we chat through Bayern's late Davies dagger that broke Celtic hearts (it's a cruel game, sometimes), as well as Milan and Atalanta's respective headlosses as they crashed out to Feyenoord and Club Brugge respectively, as well as an incredibly fun encounter which saw Benfica emerge victorious against AS Monaco. It's Ranks! And remember, if you'd like more from the Rank Squad, including extra podcasts every Monday and Friday (including our weekly Postbox taking a look at the whole weekend of football) and access to our brilliant Discord community, then why not join us here on Patreon?
| A couple weeks ago in one of my daily emails I asked for people's experiences, perspectives, and questions about culture. A reader responded: As far as culture, my main frustration is a lack of initiative I notice in some of our adult, professional faculty members... Behaviors like not arriving on time for a duty, being unwilling to contact parents (or reply to parent contacts), and walking past litter on the hallway floor are my frustration. My question is how to make it the norm in our school to be proactive and to take initiative? So, what does this mean when the adults aren't behaving like… well, adults? The question to begin with is not “what can we do?” The question to start with is “Why is this happening?”Celebration: Weather over 60 degrees and sunny enough to make hiking a joy!Prelude: Who is a leaderOne challenge many leaders and potential leaders face is they don't “seem” or “feel” like leaders. This comes from a relatively narrow conception in our culture about what makes a leader. An overreliance on decision-making and charisma, as well as our culturally engrained images of the leader archetype, hamper our ability to encourage and develop leaders with a diverse set of skills. A participant in one of my recent trainings shared a 2020 article from Journal of Experimental Social Psychology. (link in show notes). The authors (Mueller, Jennifer S., Goncalo, Jack and Kamdar, Dishan) stated in their abstract:Study 1shows creative idea expression is negatively related to perceptions of leadership potential in a sample of employees working in jobs that required creative problem solving. Study 2 shows that participants randomly instructed to express creative solutions during an interaction are viewed as having lower leadership potential. A third scenario study replicated this finding showing that participants attributed less leadership potential to targets expressing creative ideas, except when the “charismatic” leader prototype was activated. In sum, we show that the negative association between expressing creative ideas and leadership potential is robust and underscores an important but previously unidentified bias against selecting effective leaders.Simple translation: Creative people aren't perceived as leaders unless they have high charisma…Full disclosure: I did not read and evaluate the entire article but their thesis is consistent with other research and my own observations and experiences.Stepping back, I wonder, in what context would creative problem solving not be a big advantage? And yet, the research suggests we are not inclined to view creative problem-solving as a desirable leadership characteristic. Maybe it is the same for people who are really good at asking questions?Or for people who are great at helping people collaborate with each other?Or maybe people who are great at helping others learn to lead? The challenge we face is that we have a narrow set of criteria we use, at a cultural level, to determine what leaders should be like. We have been conditioned to think about leaders in terms of a few specific characteristics like vision and decisiveness. In pre-defining what constitutes leadership, we limit the possibilities for nurturing leadership in the majority of people around us. The point I'm trying to make is that if we can look at people's strengths and seek to put people in position to leverage those strengths, we all win. I hope this all makes sense – it did to me when I write it but now, I'm not so sure

We talk about academic life, what it means to be a creative, and how are you fit in when you feel like you never fit in. We talk about the courage it takes to do creative endeavors, an internal strength to tell the world you're doing something that is completely different and perhaps can be upsetting. We touch upon the importance of having a sense of humor and playfulness when you are working on hard problems that could not be taken in the right way. The goal is to help people walk through challenging problems that allow them to feel good about themselves when you're tackling something that makes people feel uncomfortable.

NASA is working towards a sustained lunar habitation, which is presenting some interesting engineering challenges. One of the people working on the concepts and solutions for making that human presence a reality is Goncalo Esteves, Founder and CTO, Argo Space Technologies. Argo Space Technologies is focused on systems engineering, process implementation, product management, and engineering support for Lunar habitation. The company supported Planetoid Mines in its submission for the NASA Break the Ice Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to further the development of technologies that can excavate and transport large quantities of icy lunar regolith and can continuously operate for 15 days. The teams will move on to build and test full-size prototypes in Level 2. The 13 U.S. teams will receive equal shares of NASA's $500,000 prize purse for Level 1. In Level 3, qualifying teams will put their prototypes to the test in a head-to-head onsite competition for a shot at $1.5 million in prizes. But Lunar habitation is not the only aspect of space exploration in which Argo Space Technologies is involved. Goncalo and his team are also involved in the International Space Station (ISS) and World Design Organization – Business and Process Team The team is working to design the new business processes for manufacturing in space and new business model as NASA works towards commercialization of the station. The team worked with ISS personnel to propose cycle time reduction from three years down to six months on projects for cost savings of some $500 million. How does what happens in space affect your everyday life? The Ex Terra podcast is dedicated to introducing you to many of the interesting people involved in the commercial space industry, and taking you behind the scenes with many of the companies making significant contributions to the new space economy. In a 2015 article, Professor Jack Goncalo and colleagues explored the impact of “political correctness” on creativity in work groups. At the time the findings – that political correctness is actually good for creativity - were so controversial that the article was rejected numerous times before finally being published in the leading journal in the field. So why – and how – is political correctness actually good for creativity? We explore this and more with Professor Goncalo. Article link: https://journals.sagepub.com/doi/abs/10.1177/0001839214563975 Jack Goncalo is Professor of Business Administration and the Robert and Helen P. Seass Faculty Fellow at the Gies College of Business, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Prior to joining the University of Illinois, he was Professor of Organizational Behavior at the Cornell University ILR School where he was the Proskauer Professor. Professor Goncalo's research is focused on individual and team creativity, the evaluation of new ideas and more recently, the dark side of engaging in creative work. His research spanning the fields of Management and Psychology has been published in leading academic journals and been featured in numerous media outlets such as CNN, Time Magazine, The New York Times and Forbes Magazine.

Whoever said that a community is a way of life could never be more correct. As human beings, we need a sense of belonging, and that sense of belonging is what connects us to the many relationships we develop. Communities are also rich in resources, that is where their collective aspect comes into play. No matter where you go, there will always be a group of people who share the same passion and interests. If there is none, build one! And that is exactly what Gonçalo Hall does. He builds communities and helps them thrive in remote work life.In this episode of The New Nomad, Andrew Jernigan and Allen Koski joined by Gonçalo in a very passionate discussion about Portugal, remote work, and the importance of communities. While it's so tempting to just get lost in a new country and find your way by yourself, it is also good to know that there are communities of digital nomads and remote workers who have local knowledge of the place and can help you out. Our trio of digital nomads discussed experiences and gave gold-nugget tips on how to thrive in this laptop lifestyle. The Teacher Coach with T.K. Griffith and Scott Matthew Callaghan
Goncalo Marques, from Lisbon, Portugal, shares his incredible insights learned through his clinical psychology and sports psychology background. Marques, a young man who will be working with club teams in the Portugal soccer world as a sports psychologist, believes that coaches must not paint the full picture for their athletes, but should instead provide a palette upon which the players can paint their own masterpiece. He argues that authoritarian coaches only harm the learning process. Coaches must adjust their vision and be more collaborative, more loving, more flexible and more validating if they wish to truly teach excellence.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/teachercoach)

First Quantum of Solace (CX Lounge) I really should start with the simple fact that I have put myself on a hiatus.. Several reasons for my current status: A) Life is currently non-linear and the pressure to keep this podcast up to what I believe should be my standards would not really bring any escape. B) I had found that laately what I uploaded was at best mundane. If I do not feel it, why should I do it? Furthermore I am currently over soulful house, I do need to really get very far away from it for a while to start feeling it again. C) I played a long set on New Years’s Eve and though not bad same non-urge to publish it. D) What happens once every two years, my library got corrupted. I had to bite the bullet and migrate to my new mac, having lost most edits and settings. To rebuild a library to the structure I need takes a lot of time and tagging and I simply do not have that luxury at the present time. But here I am, travelling overseas, facing lounge downtime, flight downtime, hotel room downtime, all those little quanta of Solace conducive to trying to redefine where I would like to be musically should life settle down a tad. My current headspace is progressive, ambient, trance-like and possibly harder-like in the near future. Playlist is approximate due to library corruption just when I had closed the set. The format is based around one or two keys, starts around 120 bpm to go to 136 and brings you down back to 122. A few on-the-fly edits, a very cheeky mashup I will get in trouble for (Rick Astley trancified really ;) and yes a bit of true trance.. Absolutely 100% Live with all the traps inherent with such an endeavour where no post-edit is possible.. Playlist: 2016 We Can Talk (Larse Dub) [Xtian Liberate Edit feat.
