This is a Vintage episode from 2010Why This Episode MattersWhy most Pinot Grigio on the market tastes the same—and how to spot the real thingThe difference between DOC vs IGT wines (and why it actually matters in your glass)How geography—especially Trentino-Alto Adige—shapes flavor more than marketing ever willA candid look at wine pricing: what's quality vs what's brandingThe BanterMark Pascal and Francis Schott open with stories from interviewing restaurant staff highlighting a simple truth: honesty matters more than experience, especially in hospitality. The ConversationGiovanni Barone of Barone Fini joins the show to break down the misunderstood world of Pinot Grigio. He explains how Italy's regional identity, not the country itself, defines wine, and why Trentino-Alto Adige produces fresher, more food-friendly expressions due to extreme temperature swings and alpine conditions. The discussion pulls back the curtain on the wine business: from bulk wine labeled as premium bottles to the outsized role of branding in pricing. Giovanni makes the case for purity and restraint in winemaking, contrasting it with more manipulated styles found elsewhere.Along the way, the conversation becomes a broader philosophy of food and drink: great wine isn't about flash—it's about flavor, place, and how it works at the table.Timestamps00:00 – Interview horror stories & hiring philosophy08:45 – Introducing Giovanni Barone & Barone Fini10:30 – What “DOC” actually means (and why you should care)14:00 – The realities of the wine business in Italy20:30 – Italian wine rules, climate, geography, and flavor27:00 – Why Pinot Grigio works with food (even rich dishes)32:00 – Pricing, branding, and the truth about expensive Pinot Grigio37:00 – DOC vs IGT explained simply41:00 – Purity in wine vs mass-market productionBioGiovanni Barone is part of the Barone Fini family, a historic winemaking estate in Italy's Trentino-Alto Adige region. "AI is coming for everyone's jobs." In this thought-provoking episode of Got Somme, host Angus O'Loughlin puts artificial intelligence to the test in a head-to-head wine tasting battle against one of Australia’s top Master Sommeliers, Carlos Santos. Can ChatGPT hold its own in a blind tasting of red wine? How does AI fare in analysing the nuances of a French Chardonnay? The episode explores how technology in wine—particularly AI—could shape the future of wine assessment, wine pairing, and sommelier culture. With both participants sharing their insights, tasting notes, and predictions, this is a must-listen for anyone curious about the intersection of AI and the wine industry. Listen now to explore the bold new frontier where technology meets terroir—and find out who really knows their wine: man or machine? The Magic of Culinary Pairings and Local Culture All panelists agree: pairing wine with local cuisine is more than a meal—it's a cultural immersion. Amanda shares, “Sometimes the diet, the gastronomy also really influences the style of wine that comes from that region. Those pairings can be magical.” Local festivals and traditions bring wine's story to life. Wine Collecting and Investment: Pleasure Over Profits Alder Yarrow delivers a candid take on wine investment: “Buy wine that you intend to drink...but don't think you're going to use it to increase your nest egg.” The panel advocates for collecting as a means to richer experiences, not just financial returns, and offers practical tips for new collectors. In this episode Mark gets together with a handful of our past Willamette Valley Lifestyle Tour guests to relive the memories and continue the friendships that were made on this fabulous 5-night trip last August. This is our only tour we do within the country and it is an easy getaway that only takes a few hours to get to, but feels like you are miles away. We take guests to the heart of the Willamette Wine Valley in Central Oregon to explore one of Wine Enthusiast's Wine Regions of the Year that is truly a hidden gem. This year we are taking 14 guests from June 12-17 - spots are still available! Everyday we visit incredible local wineries, tour some of the vineyards and an olive oil mill, learn about the process and of course enjoy food and wine pairings! Every evening we enjoy a multi-course dinner of local, often farm-to-table cuisine and meet the owners and chef. In between eating and drinking, we have leisurely mornings and nights at the lovely Setting Inn. You will wake up to views of the vineyards and lavender fields, and will have the opportunity to take a guided hike amongst 100-year old trees, visit the local boutiques or farmers market, and relax by the Inn's fire pit with a drink and cigar. While there is a daily itinerary of wine tastings and dinners, each day is also relaxing and full of beautiful scenery, fresh air and cool temperatures. There are still a few rooms remaining, so we'd love to have you join us! Visit candelariadesign.com/oregon-wine-tour for more info. Also, join us this weekend at the inaugural Scottsdale Ferrari Art Week at Westworld in Scottsdale March 20-23. Mark will enjoying the art and daily panels and fashion shows each day and will even be the emcee at the VIP Opening Night event Thursday, March 20! Tickets available at the link above. https://scottsdaleartweek.com/

Hello wine friends! Welcome to part 2 of our exploration of Turkish wines! In this episode, we're back with our special guests: Sila Serim of Vinolus Winery and Bronwen Batey, Editor of Turkish Wine, A Heritage Reborn. Today, we're delving into one of Turkey's most iconic red grapes, Kalecik Karasu (or KK for short). This once near-extinct variety has made a stunning comeback, and we'll discuss its fascinating history and unique characteristics. We'll talk about other red indigenous grapes to know about. Sila takes us inside Vinolus Winery, where wine lovers can sip incredible wines while staying in their guest house: Sunolus. Plus, we tackle the challenges facing Turkish wine today, the countries old vines and what the future might hold. This is the fourth episode in our mini-series on South African wines. The goal with this series is to highlight the key regions, grapes, winemakers, and stories of the South African wine industry to distill this huge category into bite sized, educational pieces. Joining me for this episode about the Stellenbosch is our in-house South African wine expert, Aaron Meeker. This show is a recap of a the recent trip through Tuscany that my travel partner, Tourissimo, and I organized for a group of 19 Patrons (join Patreon so you can make the next one!). We go through the major DOCGs/DOCs we visited and I share some interesting things I learned and observed. A great one for armchair travel! Here are the DOCGs we explored: Vernaccia di San Gimignano Vino Nobile di Montepulciano Chianti Classico Brunello di Montalcino Morellino di Scansano And the DOCs Maremma and Bolgheri My big takeaway from the trip: I am more optimistic than ever about Tuscan wines, which just keep getting better and better. If you don't have experience with these wines, I would recommend checking them out (especially if you like Italian food since what grows together, goes together!). Chianti Classico, view from Castello Brolio, Ricasoli 1141. Credit: Wine For Normal People A few shout outs! To Heather, Beppe, and Silvia from Tourissimo, for being the best partners ever! To Wine Access for hooking us up with some great visits to Castello Romitorio and San Filippo 3. Hotel della Fortezza and Fidalma -- go see them in Sorano for a great stay and a great meal!
