Some Years Later Wearing mostly Mom's handknits because I was there and didn't have all of my own to choose from. I wore some of her socks especially when we ended up sleeping in the family room and it was chilly and I couldn't leave her alone. Hattie didn't get her Christmas gifts until after Miles' Baptism on 1/12- "be off you boring socks" and threw socks across the room and immediately put them on and was showing them off. It was very dramatic and adorable. Laura sent me a text of her friend Arielle wearing the socks I knit her. You can find the Ravelry Project Page here. Laura and I went back to my house one day to collect some things and Riley asked me to bring ALL THE KNITTING, so I grabbed a ton of stuff. She opened every single project bag and in the end still decided to knit on the Freckled Whimsy advent socks Crafty Adventures We printed almost 400 photos for 11 posters for the funeral home. We broke out the scrapbook supplies and tape gun which I can't believe Laura didn't steal because after an initial skepticism she and Jenny were very into it. Megg, Oisin and Riley were huge helps and had a lot of fun. Megg and Laura searched house for memoriabilia stuff to make 3 displays for funeral home- Red Sox & reselling, Christmas and Wiz of Oz. Mary's Commentator Updates I just finished a sweater--my first big project of the PSP. It took me months and it feels like a great accomplishment. Plus it is enough yards to qualify for a blitz! This got me thinking about blitzes and wondering how the pigskin partiers are doing with blitzes this year. When I just looked, players had already submitted for 202 blitzes this year! Amazing! But even more amazing are a handful of what I am calling super-blitzers! 2 players have already completed 6 blitzes so far this year! Can you believe it? Spottydogknits finished two sweaters, one cardigan, a vest, a shawl and a scarf. Their Winterwald shawl is particularly pretty. It looks like a lot of fun to knit with a variety of mosaic colorwork. Purplemomz has completed 4 blankets! Two were knit and two were crocheted along with two cardigans! I really like their two rainbow ripple blankets--it is so fun to see how the same pattern works up in different yarn. https://www.ravelry.com/projects/PurpleMomz/rainbow-ripple-baby-blanket-3 https://www.ravelry.com/projects/PurpleMomz/rainbow-ripple-baby-blanket-4 In addition to these super-blitzers, 3 players have completed 5 blitzes and 3 more have completed 3! But don't be dismayed if you are a mere mortal like me--The best thing about the PSP is that you can make whatever you want (as much or as little as you have time for). Wishing you all a very happy new year! Life in Focus Tune in to hear the last of my Mom's story. I also reviewed my word for 2024, Heart, my goals and my 24 for 2024 list. On a Happy Note Seeing a local production of Pippin and introducing it to Riley. Seeing Hattie in Funky Nutcracker & her winter dance recital. Check out Day 14 of Vlogmas for more. Riley took her first solo drive as a licensed driver, made us breakfast and braided my hair. Later that day, friends surprised my Mom by caroling. Check out this video for more. Oisin got his license the following Saturday. Mom was so proud of both of them. Silly moment putting TJ's gummy mustaches on our faces. Mom even got in on the action resting it on her oxygen tube and giving crazy eyes for a photo. The Christmas eve cling wrap game that my cousin Lea hosted. You can see it at the end of my Vlogmas Day 24 video Fun Christmas morning with G & Z who enjoyed the power wheels Jeep. Doing puzzles with G while Z played the piano. Low key Christmas afternoon at my parents'. At one point Mom got confused and said we were at a wedding so that turned into a running joke all day. My cousin Jenny, mom's Goddaughter, came over for a bit and showed Mom the video that over 40 people sent in clips for. She said it was her fav Christmas gift. Laura, whose timing is impeccable and who was everything I needed during the hardest time. Shopping with friends to find attire for Mom's funeral. Conor led the kids in singing Somewhere Over the Rainbow at mom's services and our friend Michael Hammond led a group singing Seasons of Love to finish the service at the Cemetery. My cousin Rita Marie sang at funeral mass. Folks flew in from 12 states to attend which was lovely but also it got crazy once we realized we had way more people coming than would fit in he luncheon venue we talked to. Dad said it was like the Jerry Lewis telethon w/ everyone making phone calls trying to find a new venue. By the next morning, we found a place that worked, visited and picked out the menu by that night. As ever, this segment is meant to focus on the highlights. Not the lowlights of which there have been many. Grief sucks. Its hard, but we also got 68 beautiful years w/ my Mom- and we lived it up royally in the last 3 since she got sick. We'll always more time but I don't have any regrets and that's something to be truly grateful for. Miles' Baptism. It was a beautiful service with brunch after at Conor & Carly's. Just before Christmas, we gave away $10k in FearLESS Living Fund scholarships to 2 gentlemen the Blind Center of Nevada. Friends attended and sent us videos. Just incredible. I hope it helps to really give them a leg up this year. Quote of the Week "There is a sacredness in tears. They are not the mark of weakness, but of power.
Today I'm honored to introduce to you: targeted individual, sexual abuse and Hollywood sex kitten survivor, Podcaster, Mafia goddaughter, professional singer, survivor advocate, entrepreneur, podcaster, and all-around inspiration: KC Sunshine!I met KC recently through mutual friends on Twitter and I'm really thrilled to get to share her story on this podcast. KC was born into a Kansas City mafia family and due to the gifts passed down to her through her family's genealogy and bloodline as well as her natural talents for singing, she was targeted from a young age and was molested by 5 different people by the age of 11. She was offered up by her mother to the satanic Hollywood agency and found herself repeatedly being fondled by the rich and famous at her professional singing gigs starting at age 7 and 8. KC was trafficked through several foster homes when school was in session - changing schools 18 times by her Junior Year. She and her brother were severely abused physically and emotionally by their mother but experienced a few years of protection as a Mafia Goddaughter until she returned to foster care and was violently raped twice at age 14. After blaming herself, KC sought forgiveness and devoted her life to Jesus Christ and left home to live on her own at the age of 15. She began therapy at age 17 and found tools of recovery for her trauma. She has been providing free support for sexual trauma survivors for 29 years now and is a true hero in the survivor community! One of the things that I love about KC is that she had everything and everyone in her life trying to tear her down and not only did they fail, but they underestimated her and didn't expect that she would grow up to be a force to be reckoned with and that the abuses that were meant to destroy her would be used to help and heal others. KC Sunshine is exactly as her name sounds - a ray of sunshine, a beacon of hope, and a light in the darkness and I know you will all fall in love with her as much as I have. So please grab a pen and paper and give KC your full and undivided attention! Before I finish introducing today's guest - I wanted to give a quick reminder that if you are a survivor or whistleblower who wants to share your story on the podcast or who wants to share any information privately with me, you can email me at IMAGINEABETTERWORLD2020@GMAIL.COM! Earlier this month, the Long Beach Post was able to help Project Dignity member Ishqa Hillman locate an unhoused woman affectionately known as "Goddaughter," who had gone missing.Helping people like Goddaughter feel compassion while living on the street is something Hillman takes pride in, and it is something she can relate to.Hillman says she experienced every abuse and trauma imaginable by the time she was 5 years old. While still a teenager, she found herself living on the streets because "home wasn't safe."Now, Hillman is using her experience to help others, including navigating "adulting" through her nonprofit Long Beach Peer Education Community Center, providing a platform for those in the cannabis business with Canna Boss Babes, or helping the unhoused as a volunteer with Project Dignity. Hillman has found her purpose. On this episode of "The Word" podcast, Hillman shares her story of struggle, triumph, and her passion for helping others. To learn more about Ishqa Hillman, follow her on Instagram.

Mental Illness/Bipolar is not a Death Sentence with Susan Johnson I couldn't wait to share this conversation with you! My guest is Susan Johnson and she's the author of, Some Dreams Are Worth Keeping: A Memoir of My Bipolar Journey. I was impressed by her courage to have an open dialog about mental illness. With her personal diagnosis of Bipolar, I had a specific interest in this topic because as many of you may know my mother struggled with bipolar. At that time, back in the mid 80's, my mom was diagnosed as manic depressive. That's what they use to bipolar. Not many people, my mother included are willing to talk about mental illness, and I get it. Because when I was growing up having to be on medicine because you were considered mentally unstable was considered shameful. And I'm not proud to admit it, but in a home with a mother who has brutal mood swings, I thought my mother was crazy. I said she was crazy. So the stigma that surrounds a diagnosis of mental illness can be very unsettling and has the potential to make for a very complicated conversation because let's be honest, how do you tread lightly with something so sensitive. Susan is open and honest about her journey and she gives us some insight into what mental illness is and is not. Her willingness to be candid and transparent is creating a dialog that I believe removes a lot of the current day stigma by letting us see that it is manageable and life can be full and rewarding. I'm confident that Susan's courage will give hope to those who struggle with a mental illness. She's a college graduate, gainfully employed, happily married and has a full life! Something else she was willing to reveal is why she and her husband decided not to have children. Her story is very encouraging! I especially liked her TED talk on Youtube (see link below). As you listen in don't miss her explanation of why memorizing a 15 minute TED talk is an amazing accomplishment in and of itself! “I was always sensitive to injustice…but in terms of how I landed doing civil rights and constitutional rights, especially as it pertains to women, I came into it organically.” An alternative in case that requires too much space. “I was always sensitive to injustice…but in terms of how I landed doing civil rights and constitutional rights…I came into it organically.” Wendy Murphy Having the opportunity to welcome Wendy Murphy as a guest provided one of the most fascinating and educational conversations on the plight of women that I've ever experienced. From outlining how the law is written to support violence against women to the extent to which there is no one monitoring our judges when they rule in discriminatory ways against women was eye-opening, in the least. Listening to Wendy explain how it is our US Constitution that stands as the underlying cause that allows judges in every courtroom, not just criminal cases, to treat women in a discriminatory way, further ignited my inner passion to fight for women's rights, in my own smaller way. I invite you to join us for this Part 1 of a two-part conversation on what women need to know in order to stand up for themselves on how the minimization of our entire gender is not just alive and well, but legally sanctioned. BIO For more than fifteen years, Wendy Murphy has served as adjunct professor of sexual violence law at New England Law|Boston, where she also co directs the Women's and Children's Advocacy Project under the Center for Law and Social Responsibility. A former Visiting Scholar at Harvard Law School, Wendy prosecuted child abuse and sex crimes cases for many years. In 1992 she founded the first organization in the nation to provide pro bono legal services to crime victims. Wendy is an impact litigator whose work in state and federal courts has changed the law to better protect the constitutional and civil rights of victimized women and children. Wendy writes and lectures widely on the constitutional and civil rights of women and children and criminal justice policy. She is a contributing editor for The Sexual Assault Report and writes a regular column for The Patriot Ledger. Wendy has published numerous scholarly articles including a landmark law review article explaining the legal relationship between sexual assault on campus and Title IX. Dubbed the “Goddaughter of Title IX” by the “Godmother of Title IX,” Dr. Bernice Sandler, Wendy's impact litigation in the area of campus sexual assault, beginning in the early 1990s, includes groundbreaking victories against Harvard College in 2002, and Harvard Law School and Princeton University in 2010, which cases led the way to widespread awareness and reforms, including the well-known April 2011 Dear Colleague Letter. Wendy is a popular and bold speaker on the lecture circuit who describes herself as “fiercely non-partisan.” Wendy is also a well-known television legal analyst who Emmy Award-winning journalist Emily Rooney calls the “best talker” on television with a “finger on the pulse of victims' and women's rights.” Wendy has worked for NBC, CBS, CNN and Fox News. She regularly provides legal analysis for network and cable news programs. Her first book, “And Justice For Some,” was published by Penguin/Sentinel in 2007, and re-released in paperback in 2013.
Hank Hanegraaff, president of the Christian Research Institute and host of the Bible Answer Man broadcast, comments on a recent news story that turns out to be another example of failure to do due diligence in reporting. Duke University women's volleyball starter Rachel Richardson sent out a tweet saying that she and her “fellow African American teammates…were targeted and racially heckled throughout the entirety of the match” between Duke and Brigham Young University. Richardson's Godmother, Lesa Pamplin, tweeted, “My Goddaughter is the only black starter for Dukes volleyball team. While playing yesterday, she was called a [n-word] every time she served. She was threatened by a white male that told her to watch her back going to the team bus. A police officer had to be put by their bench.” LeBron James tweeted, “you tell your Goddaughter to stand tall, be proud and continue to be BLACK!!!....We have her back.” Richardson's father, Marvin Richardson, conveyed to the New York Times that “as the crowd got more hyped and the epithets kept coming, she wanted to respond back but she told me she was afraid that, if she did, the raucous crowd could very well turn into a mob mentality.” New York Times, Washington Post, CNN, Sports Illustrated, NPR published articles without sufficient investigation—only a rush to judgment. It's the HistoryExtra podcast's 15th birthday, and to celebrate, we've asked 15 historians to nominate a figure from history they think deserves their ‘15 minutes of fame'. In this episode, Hannah Cusworth nominates Aina Forbes Bonetta, also known as Sara. A Yoruba girl transported from West Africa, Aina became a goddaughter of Queen Victoria. Hannah speaks to Elinor Evans about what her story tells us much about the connections between West Africa and Britain during the Victorian era. Our GDPR privacy policy was updated on August 8, 2022. She didn't say so, but my kitchen is a bit of a disgrace. What the Goddaughter did say was “Yeah, the doors are all chipped. It looks nasty. I could paint those for you.” “How difficult is it to paint kitchen doors?” “Not difficult,” she said. Then she shrugged and stuck out her bottom lip. I'm not slow on the uptake. “What do you mean by not difficult?” I asked. “Not difficult,” she shrugged again. “Let me put it another way, how complicated, how expensive and how long will it take?” The answer was that it would involve a multiplicity of tasks, trips to the paint shop, Saturday morning early starts, two weeks of having no handles and not being able to touch the paintwork before the sealer was applied, and just as expensive as buying new doors. It wasn't going to be a paint job then. This would be an uptake of 25% off new kitchen doors if I hurried while stocks lasted, rather than the agony of something that was not difficult but extremely inconvenient. I sent the builder a text to ask if he might be up for the job of replacing the kitchen cupboard doors. He didn't reply, which I took to mean he hadn't received my request, so I called him. He didn't answer the phone, which I took to mean he was busy just at that moment. When he didn't respond to my various messages I wondered if he'd ever got round to listening to his voicemails so I text him again. The next voice I heard was Malcolm, who said I clearly hadn't listed to the silence. The builder was far too busy and had asked Malcolm if he could do the job. I was delighted. Malcolm and I love a healthy exchange of views. “Is this going to be a ten minute row or a five minute row?” he'll often ask. “What's the point?” I glibly retort. “you're not listening anyway.” Then I got a call from the builder. He said that he was really really really busy. Then he yawned, very loudly, just to reinforce the point. “Listen,” he said. I tell you what it is Anna. My sister is gonna send you a text in a minute. Her husband's cousin's friend has had a baby and the baby is blind. Can you talk to my sister please. No pressure.” “Of course,” I said. “Has the baby got any sight or none at all?” “I don't know. I wasn't listening.” Then he yawned again. “Boy or girl?” I ventured. “I don't know. I wasn't listening.” “When was the baby born?……” I love a new born. “My sister knows. I wasn't listening.” This might have been code for “You're not listening.” The text arrived and I picked up the phone and called the builder's sister. The baby is nearly a year old and she's a girl. Then I listened. The baby is a baby is a baby. The parents are the parents are struggling to get their heads round the idea that perfection comes in all kinds of packages. Perfection need not have twenty-twenty vision. She's statistically unlikely to lament the loss of “taxi driver” as an employment opportunity, but they don't know that. If only someone would listen to what they are asking for. In my outrage at this state of affairs, I committed myself to go to see them. When it came to giving location details I wasn't really listening. That's how I have committed myself to an eight hour round trip. I'm thinking of offering zoom. The Goddaughter turned up and said the new doors looked good but then again they would have looked good painted. The Goddaughter, and her various assistants, have been helping to keep my house in order. Reputation is everything and without it, she says, she would not have a cleaning round the envy of the most energetic of entrepreneurs. She keeps her clients. Our shared desire to live in a clean house is one of those bonding experiences that she ensures and I take her word for. Taking her word for it is not the same as taking her literally. When she declares it's ‘all done” I am not so stupid as to imagine perfection and don't judge her or her numerous assistants against an impossible standards. There are limits and while I think it's probably clean enough, I really can't judge for myself. The odd cat biscuit still goes crunch under foot. The Goddaughters various assistants have not always cut me the same slack. They are rather prone to taking things literally and judging me accordingly. The last one refused to come back because, “of your job”. The Goddaughter explained what she knew. The assistant went on a date with someone who knew me and told her that if he were her, so to speak, he would not want clean in my house because he happened to know I worked for the secret service and was licenced to kill. Indeed, he knew for a fact I had killed. The closest I've got to anyone licenced to kill, is breakfast in the canteen at Bishopsgate Police Station. More a “lining up to eat as much as you can” experience than “Line of Duty”. I might suggest that he was confusing me with that well-known fast car driving, sharp shooting, sniper, Brother Silas. Like me, poor old Brother Silas was a bit misrepresented. Neither of us could hit a barn door at anything further than six feet, let alone drive a fast car at speed through Paris. Just because we are on the light side of white doesn't mean we carry such a huge grudge against people with pigment that we want to polish them off. If my generosity were really being stretched I should say the Goddaughters assistant's date got confused. Could he have muddled up notions of Public Service with the Secret Service. Or possibly he got his wires crossed when he heard about the exploits of the “Likely Cats” Bob and Clive, my small game hunters who turned out to be responsible for the stink behind the sofa. They were just doing what cats do and I never knew the bodies were there. Maybe the Goddaughter's assistant could smell the rotting flesh and that tipped her over the edge. The most likely explanation is that her date just got bored and thought he'd have a bit of fun at someone else's expense. What yarn could he spin and still be believed? Quite a long one as it turned out. The yarn he span was nearly as long as the threads that Bob and Clive have thoughtfully liberated from the front of my sofa. One more good yank from my own resident killers and the once pristine façade of my furniture will be revealed for what it is. Not that brilliantly constructed but well upholstered. Much like it's owner. Things may not always be what they seem. Bob and Clive are cute but will kill on a whim. Being whiter than white I wouldn't dream of trying, I don't judge those boys for their murderous ways and still clean up after them. Reputation is everything and my killer cats are universally admired. I, on the other hand, appear to be dammed. Without my good reputation, even the cleaner has dumped me. The Flatmate (that was), is now up to her neck in Italian Politics and any chit chat has to be by appointment and booked ahead. We have a provisional date for a week on Sunday. In the meantime, she has celebrated living half a century. Obviously, I was not invited, because of “IT” and the collapse of air travel. I sent her a phone charger and a packet of pants for her Birthday. These are things that I know she is always short of because, mysteriously, I am now short of them. The Goddaughter was in my kitchen while I was wrapping up the parcel. I said to her, tongue in cheek, “I think anyone would be delighted to receive a phone charger cable and a packet of pants for their Birthday, don't you?” “No,” she said. “It's a bloody awful.” “What can you possibly mean?” “I'm not being funny, but if it were me, I'd prefer Gucci to a packet of pants and a manky old phone cable.” It was true. She was not being funny. I tried to redeem myself, holding up a basket I had made especially for the Flatmate (that was) Birthday. The Goddaughter examined it and scowled in disapproval. “Definitely not Gucci.” On my way back from the Post Office I sent the Flatmate (that was) a WhatsApp to explain to her that I'd sent her a present to make her laugh, but that it wasn't Gucci. A couple of weeks elapsed and I began to doubt the wisdom of my gift. Then a series of messages landed to say the present had arrived, and she had laughed and that the basket would live in her bathroom. This is inspired as I will never enter the realms of her bathroom so if she was horrified and feels the need to re-purpose the basket for firelighters, I will never know. When I came home yesterday a letter from Italy was waiting for me. I couldn't read it because it was handwritten and handwriting is not an easy thing to read. I sent a text asking if the flatmate (that was) could offer up a synopsis. She said I had better get someone else to read it to me. By great good fortune the honour fell to the Goddaughter as the first person across my threshold. I have been the lucky recipient of a letter setting out the joy of friendship: a friendship that came about by a chance introduction in Sofia and has taken in various locations, quite a bit of salad, several editions of Newsnight and the Archers. The Goddaughter was impressed with the sentiment, but wondered where Ambridge was and who Kirsty and Philip were. I explained that Philip is a crook and that the sooner Kirsty clicks on and dumps him, the better. She wondered about the BBC's involvement in this scandal. I explained that neither Ambridge, Philip or Kirsty were real and that the Covid editions had been a poor show with neither the BBC or Philip coming out of this well. The Goddaughter was perplexed. In fairness to her I looked perplexed when she tried to explain the difference between beeswax polish and Mr Sheen. “You can't use beeswax on that cupboard,” she'd told me. When I asked why, she rolled her eyes in disbelief that I, who have been polishing furniture since before she was born, could have such a gap in my understanding of household management. “You only use beeswax on certain types of wood,” she'd explained. “Not on that cupboard.” The Goddaughter and the Flatmate (that was) have both enriched my life, in their words and in their deeds. I feel lucky in my friendships. Image shows multiple red squares with 'The Blind Truth' written inside them.
Django Nudo and the Smut Peddler thank the early VIP members of Cultpix, over 90% of whom renewed their membership a year after launch. Truly a cult! Looking ahead there is HD films from Echelon, Hungarian Film Institute (wacky!) and Ukraine. More deals to be signed at the Cannes Film Festival this month, plus a bit announcement. And Night of the Living Dead at Bio Aspen in Stockholm 15 May. The Uschi Digard double Theme Week has just concluded, even though we have barely scratched the surface of her voluminous output. Thanks to the Rialto Report interview with Uschi, Smut Peddler finds that online sources claiming that she is Swedish and went to Catholic nun school in Sweden are all fake. Uschi is actually Swiss - and that's not all we uncover, as we work our way through a selection of her early filmography in chronological order:The Scavengers (1969) - First film where Uschi Digard has a credit in a feature film. Lee Frost directed this western roughie with whippings and nudity. Getting Into Heaven (1970) - Sex-lite comedy best described as frothy and frolicsome except that the women in this picture are naked and having simulated sex with deformed looking men.Oddly Coupled (1970) - Shy photo nerd kidnapped by carload of pretty girls, but prefers fish instead of women. Original title: Betta Betta in the Wall, Who's the Fattest Fish of All?Private Arrangement (1970) - The Playpen cruise is actually an orgiastic yacht party. But when a member turns up dead it becomes a whodunnit-with-boobs. Sandra, the Making of a Woman (1970) - Small-town girl relocates to LA where she moves in with Uschi, who promptly makes a move on her. Coed Dorm (1971) - Semi-musical nudie comedy with Uschi a member of The Farouk U All-Girl Topless Tabernacle Choir.A Touch of Sweden (1971) - Uschi uses her best (fake) Swedish äccent tö tell störies öf sexuål ädventures. Skin Flick Madness (1970s) - Loop of Uschi in a grindhouse cinema 'inspires' couple watching to get frisky. Hawaiian Split (1971) - Say Aloha to drugs, violence and nudity. Rene Bond co-stars in this with Uschi as "bimbo". The Big Snatch (1971) - Uschi and four other women kidnapped by lowlifes in this mean and nasty ultra-sexy roughie. The Goddaughter (1972) - Uschi murders a man by smothering his face in her tits; it's not even the strangest murder method. Vagina firing bullets, anyone? The Black Alley Cats (1972) - Black & white female vigilante gang in cool leather jackets. The Secret Dreams of Mona Q (1977) - The film the Troma Kaufmann brothers deny ever making! (Liars.) And of course there's a Uschi Spotify playlist.

First of all, one of my dear friends Nicole, mother of my Goddaughter, refused to tell me what name exactly to list her as in the episode title, and as you'll hear, she loves "Coco," so...there you have it. She'll yell at me for this later, so you all better laugh. This episode has been a long time coming, honestly even before I started the podcast. Debates about which Disney/Pixar movies are best, are eternal, and evergreen. Somehow, we cut our way down to 16 (not easy), and decided to do the rest of it with the mics on. This was a battle for the ages. A lot of tough loses. Some tears, some laughs, some bruises, but also some delightful serenades... Thank you to Nicole for putting up with my nonsense throughout these debates, and occasionally laughing at my jokes (and for giving me the cutest Goddaughter and children to spoil who I will pimp out for likes on my social media, don't you worry). Welcome back to the second half of my day with Andrés at various places around Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. If you haven't heard the first half, you should go back and listen to that one first. We're in Panajachel in the northern part of the lake. While waiting for Siobhan to arrive, Andrés and I stopped for a slow lunch in the heart of the town. As it turns out, Siobhan arrived later than expected when it was getting dark, and the last regular lancha/boat had left. But Andrés managed to call someone to pick us up in Pana and take us back to San Lucas. While sitting at the pier waiting for the boat, Andrés told me how he ended up running an Airbnb in Guatemala. GUESTHOUSE IN GUATEMALA “It all began in 1987 when I visited Honduras for the first time at the invitation of a priest who was critical about US policy in Central America. He invited us to protest the USA embassy by pouring blood on the walls as a metaphor for the bloody policies and bloodshed US policies were having on Central America at the time. I was critical of US policy in South and Central America as my uncle was imprisoned and my cousin was killed by Ronald Reagan's Contras defending the revolution of Nicaragua.” After being involved in another protest the following year in Guatemala, Andrés was caught and deported back to the USA. At a talk in Washington DC, he met Narda, a woman from Honduras who gave a talk. After he returned to Honduras to visit her, a true romance blossomed between them. The two dated long-distance, on and off for 13 years. But just as Andrés was getting into telling me the actual way he ended up in Guatemala, our boat arrived. A DOG'S LIFE We then made our way back to San Lucas Tolimán, and the guesthouse Andrés runs. He calls it Casa Catzij named after his wonderful dog, Catzij. She used to be a street dog but found out that she gets a lot of attention and good food with Andrés. You can take the dog out of the streets, but you can't really take the street out of the dog. So, she still runs around San Lucas Tolimán on her own, and it seems like everyone in town and around the lake knows her. She joined us on the day trip, and every time we strolled around town, rarely on a leash. One day when we were walking, a friend of André's was driving by and rolled down the window to say hi. And Catzij knows her too, so she jumped through the window of the car onto her lap in the driver's seat. And she's not a small dog. CASA CATZIJ Andrés, Siobhan, Catzij, and I eventually arrived at Casa Catzij where we met Alexa, a guest who regularly lives here for months at a time on each visit. There is a lot of “hygge” here (a Danish word for cosiness famous around the world). Andrés even has the book about hygge on his bookshelf. And together in the living room around the fireplace with a lot of hygge, we sat down to continue the story on how Andrés ended up running a guesthouse in Guatemala. “Unfortunately, my life partner Narda passed away after heart surgery which ended up breaking my heart. But Narda introduced me to my good friend, Chati, who I have known for about 25 years. Chati worked as an administrator for one of the poshest hotels in San Lucas Tolimán. Two years ago, I came here to write with my Goddaughter, Erica. I fell in love with the town, and after returning to California for a bit, I soon found myself back here. Chanti var på jagt efter et hus og inviterede mig med for at se det. Hun var ikke interesseret og det lykkedes mig. At lave en aftale med ejeren – og nu er det lavet om til en Airbnb. Chanti was house hunting and asked me along to look at this place. She wasn't interested and I wasn't even looking for a house. But I managed to strike up an agreement with the owner to renovate the house and turn it into an Airbnb.” “PALLE'S PICKUP” FROM GUATEMALA I am so happy that I made some interesting new friends during my stay at Casa Catzij in San Lucas Tolimán at Lake Atitlan in Guatemala. Meeting Alexa, Siobhan, and Andrés was the best thing that has happened to me for a long time. Andrés' ability to talk to everyone and immerse himself into the small local community impressed me a lot. When we walked through town, I could see how much the locals like him (and his dog, Catzij). A short walk to the market can take a long time. He is clearly not just an American outsider. He is one of the locals, and that is so inspiring. Obviously, it helps that he's fluent in Spanish, but even though I'm not, I learned a lot from Andrés. Just a few words in the local language helps. And trying to remember the names of people I meet. VISIT CASA CATZIJ I definitely recommend staying at Casa Catzij and spending some time with Andrés and Catzij if you're visiting Guatemala. By the way, two tiny kittens also moved into the house when I was there. Go meet them and say hi from me. My name is Palle Bo, and I gotta keep moving. See you. Goddaughter of the Rock Maidens. The name of the story lit up my imagination, as did the brief outline of a plot in W.F Kirby’s 1895 English translation of famous Estonian tales. In just a few sentences, I sensed a powerful narrative: nature spirits and underworlds; a young girl tutored by powerful female fey-folk and enchantments and serpent kings. Tawny is a self taught artist who has been working in the field of photography for the past 16+ years. Born in Tokyo, growing up an ‘army brat’, she had the unique opportunity to take in the cultures of three different continents all before the age of 12. By then she was in the United States and elbow-deep in her aunt’s theatre company. She studied theatrical arts from the age 12 to early adulthood. After briefly attending a dramatic arts conservatory after high school, she switched paths and focused her interests on being behind the camera. Her work and life have gone through many phases that led her to create the work she does today. She attributes this evolution to three major shifts: The decision to no longer pursue a career in dramatic arts, the birth of her first child and the death of her father. Tawny says, "I look to photography as the first layer of communication. My work is ever-changing and constantly evolving as am I. The portraits I create today are almost always inspired by my children and my desire to contribute something important to a world I want them to thrive in. Each portrait usually begins as someone that I am close to in some way (my children, Goddaughter, a relative, or a model that I’ve worked with in the past) which then transforms into a new compositional expression by experimenting with multiple art practices. I choose to frame my work in gold vintage, antique and contemporary baroque style frames that I collect from estate sales, consignment and second hand shops, galleries, auctions and private sellers; the majority that previously held artwork of subjects that looked nothing like mine. Every layer is intentional and meaningful." Very few young men make it out out of Academy Homes, a housing project in Roxbury, Mass. Elton Tyler is one of the few. His story is not unlike many athletes that make it out of the hood, but the one thing that stands out about his story is he ended the cycle. His daughter Amina (my Goddaughter) will not grow up without a father, like he did. That is why I’m proud to call Elton Tyler my best friend, my brother. Sure, he was a great basketball player coming up in Boston, then at University of Miami, and eventually made a career playing professionally in Europe. And we have some great stories from years of hanging out, but a lot of those stories we can’t share on the podcast. Fortunately, some of them we can share. Here are those stories and the story of Elton Tyler.

He has been featured in US News, CNN Money, Bankrate.com, interviewed internationally on TV & radio, and has a high reputation with his company, Money Ripples 1st time author Elizabeth Liddell wrote a book about true events that happened in my life over many decades. I love people, family oriented and active in church. I live in a small Midwestern town with my husband, one daughter, two grandchildren and one Goddaughter. Inspired by God to write a book in 2008 however, life circumstances was the reason I did not finish the book at that time. The year 2012, I was standing at the alter at my church, I was approached by the pastor's sister at the alter and she wrapped her arms around me and conveyed to me the Spirit of God revealed to her in prayer to tell me to write. I obeyed the message and wrote and released my story on March 12, 2013.
