It's a busy Thursday here at MR HQ, and Emma dives right into the significance Judge James Boasberg's finding cause to hold the Trump administration in criminal contempt for not adhering to his previous order on deportations. Meanwhile, Senator Chris Van Hollen is in El Salvador where he's been prevented from visiting his Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Then, Emma is joined by writer, activist and professor Naomi Klein about her new essay The rise of end times fascism. Naomi points out the new form that right wing authoritarianism has taken in finding ways to exit society and Earth itself. Naomi co-wrote the essay with Astra Taylor, which you can read here in The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2025/apr/13/end-times-fascism-far-right-trump-musk After that, infectious disease doctor MarkAlain Déry joins Emma in the studio to discuss the challenges facing public health under the Trump regime, especially from Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr. who continues to spread misinformation about any number of things, including about autism and vaccines. MarkAlain expresses his concern that essential programs that receive federal funding could now be in jeopardy, especially those that cater to marginalized communities, especially undocumented people. In the Fun Half, Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton are here to break down the video of Republican senator Chuck Grassley getting yelled at by his constituents at a town hall over the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. The group talks about how entrenched some of the support for Trump is among his base, even when his policies cost them their jobs. They also discuss how the attention on the Abrego Garcia is a moment when Democrats need to keep their foot on the gas and show voters that they are willing and able to fight for justice. It's Hump Day! Sam speaks with Tariq Habash, former senior official at the Dept. of Education under President Biden, founder & director of the organization A New Policy, to discuss the Trump administration's actions taken regarding student loans. Then, he speaks with Dr. MarkAlain Dery, infectious disease specialist, founder of community radio station 102.3 WHIV-FM, and creator of the NoiseFilter podcast, to discuss the recent measles outbreaks in Texas & New Mexico. First, Sam runs through updates on Europe's retaliatory tariffs, public backlash to Trump's handling of the economy, the House's passage of a Continuing Resolution as the fight moves to the Senate, Trump's slashing of the DOE, Trump's $100m Tesla deal, Trump's disappearing of Columbia student and permanent US resident Mahmoud Khalil, Ukraine's support for a ceasefire, the DOJ's public corruption unit, and cuts to NOAA and the EPA, before expanding on the insane debate over the GOP's “clean” Continuing Resolution, and why Senate Democrats are so willing to hand over the US government to Elon Musk. Tariq Habash then joins, first stepping back to walk through his experience working in Biden's DOE before leaving in protest at the start of last year over the President's support of Israel's ethnic cleansing of Gaza, and unpack why the internal barriers to policy work so pushed him to establishing “A New Policy.” Moving forward, Habash explores why, despite Democrats' desires, the issue of the ethnic cleansing of Gaza will not go away under Trump, with his dreams to fully redevelop the Gaza strip in his own immaged backed by his revamping of Israel's assault and a domestic crackdown (including full-on dissappearings) of pro-Palestinian activism, with the recent abduction of Mahmoud Khalil working as Trump's perfect crime to wage war on the rights of Black and Brown permanant residents – capitalizing on Democratic Leadership's commitment to genocide to minimize dissent from the opposition. Shifting to the domestic policy side of things, Tariq brings Sam through Trump's attack on the DOE, walking through the department's long history as a Civil Rights agency, before diving deep into Trump's attack on the student loan and debt relief programs, which explicitly seek to target public service workers, and folks that work with trans folks, immigrants, or Palestinians. Wrapping up, Habash looks to the devastating impact Trump's DOE cuts will have on special education in the US, and what to make of our major educational institutions fully acquiesing to the regime. Dr. MarkAlain Dery then jumps right into a clear assessment of RFK's myriad destructive actions since being named HHS Secretary, from his lack of awareness about the ongoing measles crisis, to his cancelling of ACIP, and his backing of the all-around shutdown of any federal public health communications and much of its funding. After expanding on the fundamental problem with focusing on mitigating rather than preventative care, Dr. Dery walks Sam through the importance of a public health regime when it comes to addressing large-scale health issues facing the American public, pulling from his own recent work in New Orleans, before looking toward the biggest threats he sees facing the US' weakened public health infrastructure, including the threat of an ever-mutating bird flu, and the recent bubblings of hantavirus. Wrapping up, Dr. MarkAlain Dery reemphasizes that we have the capacity to fight against these threats, despite doubts about the current administration. And in the Fun Half: Sam dives into the outcome of the Democratic Party and mainstream media's complete acquiesence to the right wing's transphobic fearmongering, with Trump's regime implementing a full scale erasure and attack on trans identity and community, looking to Rep. Keating's complete takedown of Rep. Keith Self's blantant and direct misgendering of Rep. Sarah McBride. After expanding on Trump's recent $100m commercial deal with Tesla, and diving deep into Krystal Ball's coverage of Tesla's fraud allegations out of Canada, Sam and the MR Team dive deep into Sam's debate over social security on Jubilee. Sam and Emma host Dr. MarkAlain Dery, infectious disease specialist at AccessHealth Louisiana and host of the Noise Filter podcast, to discuss the current state of COVID-19 and RSV heading further into the winter season. Then, they are joined by Leo Schwartz, reporter at Fortune Magazine, to discuss the recent congressional committee hearings surrounding FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on the release of Trump's tax returns, Zelensky's appearance in DC, Wells Fargo's multi-billion fraud fine, and the newest iteration of the Twitter Files, before diving into the Right's response to the embarrassment, harassment, and destruction that can come from the disclosure of tax returns. Then, Dr. MarkAlain Dery joins as he dives right into the crisis of a re-emergence of the flu and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) coinciding with a renewed public bout with COVID, tackling whether the return of the various repertory and inflammatory viruses has to do with a lack of immunity due to COVID precautions, or if it's simply a result of increased testing of these types of illness, before diving into the impact of inflammatory diseases in increasing risk of heart attack and stroke. Next, Dr. Dery walks through the evolving COVID policy in China, and the impact that can have on the international stage, before walking through the emerging new variants, vaccine boosting, and the various social comorbidities that we have seen in the US. Leo Schwartz then joins as he tackles what the hell Sam Bankman-Fried's FTX actually is, how they first expanded the crypto trading world before bending the rules of trade themselves, and wrap up the interview by parsing through the role of SBF and FTX in using Washington connections to help legitimize the role of crypto in US politics writ large. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma discuss COVID, Crypto, and Dore, much to a listener's chagrin, Dave from Jamaica stops by the studio, and Joe Manchin reminds us that the true bipartisanship was the platitudes we made along the way. Tim Pool stumbles into hosting another anti-semite on his show as he tackles whether or not Kanye is turning Jews to god, also tracing Woke Patient Zero back to the Occupy Wallstreet wet market, and Mike Lindell is censored on his own network! Sam and Emma host Jamie Ducharme, health correspondent at Time, to discuss her recent book Big Vape: The Incendiary Rise of Juul. Then, Sam and Emma are joined by Dr. MarkAlain Dery, infectious disease specialist at AccessHealth Louisiana and host of the Noise Filter podcast, to discuss the recent developments with COVID and the Omicron variant. Jamie walks Sam and Emma through how Juul swept across US high schools after its release in 2015, peaking at around 30% of high schoolers in 2019, before a string of misinformation on black market-THC cartridges lead to an array of anti-vape messages being disseminated across both high schools and DC, pushing Trump's FDA to begin taking on e-cigarettes. They also discuss the validity of considering e-cigs as a cigarette alternative, before looking behind the scenes at Juul's marketing to young people, and how truly negligent they could be. Next, Dr. MarkAlain Dery makes his Omicron return as he covers his experiences as the variant's impact on hospitals begins to reach its peak, why, despite its lower virulence compared to Delta, Omicron is still about as deadly as the wild type, and what differentiates the variants when it comes to long COVID. He, Sam, and Emma also discuss Omicron's impact on children, what sort of variant development we might see post-Omicron, and look deeper into efficacy numbers around testing, quarantine, and masks. Sam and Emma round out the free half with Biden's transfer to voting rights and the filibuster, and Mitt Romney's claim that they are really voting wrongs. And in the Fun Half: Emma and Sam dive into Fauci's political symbolism, looking at him go head to head with Rand Paul, and debate how much his presence lights a fire under the right, before discussing the growing prevalence of fake testing centers and faked tests. They also discuss the Right's need to center fascism as a defense against socialism, Laura Loomer's devastating censorship from ride-share apps, and Jimmy Dore returns with some overly-filtered misinformation on COVID, despite firing his editor who was obviously at fault last time, plus, your IMs! Sunni and Lisa are joined by Dr. MarkAlain Déry who talks about structural racism in healthcare and his latest venture into health education via animation. Dr. MarkAlain Déry, who is a nationally recognized HIV/AIDS advocate and Medical Director of Infectious Diseases and Chief Innovation Officer for Access Health Louisiana – the largest Medicaid-providing clinic system in Louisiana. Throughout his career Dr. Déry has been dedicated to raising awareness about HIV/AIDS and the social justice issues tied to it. His most current efforts include releasing a series of free, innovative animated videos aimed at conveying crucial health messaging surrounding HIV medications designed to destigmatize HIV and people of trans experience. A truly exemplary infectious disease physician, even being named Internist of the Year by the American College of Osteopathic Internists, Dr. Déry remains steadfastly committed to working for human rights and social justice. NoiseFilter — an educational platform that addresses health and wellness topics through creative storytelling — in conjunction with Access Health Louisiana (AHL) and theAIDS Education Training Center, is pleased to announce a new animation trilogy aimed at conveying crucial health messaging around HIV and HIV medications. NoiseFilter is hosted by Dr. MarkAlain Déry, an infectious disease physician, and Dr. Eric Griggs (Doc Griggs), a community health specialist both of AHL. Through daily podcasts, engaging live streams and whimsical animations, the doctors explain complex health topics simply and creatively. Dr. Déry is also the Medical Director of Infectious Diseases and Chief Innovation Officer for Access Health Louisiana where he specializes in the diagnosis and treatment of HIV/AIDS at the Pythian clinic in New Orleans. Alongside Dr. Déry and Doc Griggs, the new innovative animations — designed to destigmatize HIV while also amplifying the voice of people of trans experience — will also feature Milan Nicole Sherry, a trans rights activist and educator. “Our goal is to change the stigma that still remains around HIV,” said Dr. Déry. “The colorful and compelling videos use creative exploration into the human body to explain HIV medications and how they protect individuals from transmission.” In the first animation, Undetectable, Untransmittable and Undeniably Fierce! Déry and Doc Griggs journey inside Milan's body to explain that people living with HIV, who are taking their medications, can have the same quality and quantity of life as individuals living without HIV, also known as U=U. The human immune system is depicted as an orchestra and illustrates how, when introduced, HIV causes chaos for the musical conductors. Get in Step with PrEP, the second animation, also features Milan as she joins Dr. Déry and Doc Griggs inside of Dr. Déry's body to explain how PrEp, or pre-exposure prophylaxis, prevents HIV transmission. In the video, PrEP is seen as a force field, targeting HIV once it enters Dr. Déry's body. One of the key takeaways is that people living without HIV can take PrEP as a defense as the autoimmune disease. The third animation, Little Miss Muffuletta (a reference to the popular New Orleans food staple), uses the classic nursery rhyme of Little Miss Muffet to explain nPEP or non-occupational post exposure prophylaxis. In this clever animation an HIV exposure has occurred and nPEP is needed to prevent HIV from replicating. When nPEP is us
Sam's back this week as him and Emma host infectious disease specialist Dr. MarkAlain Dery, infectious disease physician and epidemiologist at Access Health Louisiana and host of the daily NoiseFilter Podcast, to discuss the fallout from Hurricane Ida making landfall in Louisiana, the evacuation efforts, and what it means for hospitals battling COVID-19 at the same time. Calling in from New Orleans City Hall, Dr. Dery describes the development of this perfect storm; following a massive uptick in Delta cases throughout the south and with hospitalizations still on the rise, despite already being at capacity, Hurricane Ida hit Louisiana immediately knocking out power and causing medical emergencies throughout New Orleans. He also dives into the lessons that the city had learned from Katrina, with improved infrastructure around levies and roofing, and looks into the evacuation attempt in the city. He, Sam, and Emma also look forward to how the viral pandemic will continue to develop after ravaging the south, with Dr. Dery looking at unvaccinated pockets throughout the country and the political games being played by Republican governors as the largest threats, as well as the likely developments of more and more strains as global vaccine rates remain low. They wrap up the interview with a discussion on the importance of responsible public health communication from both representatives and the mainstream media. Sam and Emma also look into the developments in the Afghanistan Evacuation, the U.S.'s resumption of killing civilians in the region, and the failure of the U.S. infrastructure to prepare hospitals for the pandemic and Hurricane Ida (if only there was an infrastructure package that was properly supported). And in the Fun Half: Sam gives an update on approving his Suns out Guns out license, the MR crew discusses the stirrings of the covid horrors as schools begin to reopen as well as the incredible culpability of the legitimate media that is “just asking questions” around vaccine skepticism. They also touch on some stories of regret on this coverage, including from a chiropractor in North Dakota, and Emma takes on the sapping of collective consciousness from public health issues in our “me” society. Visitors to Undesign the Redline are left with a strong impression of the historical forces that made New Orleans and other cities the way they are now. The exhibit is on display at the Small Center until April 1. It is powerful, moving and incredible - make sure you check it out!
New Orleans attracts nearly 20 million visitors a year, putting us in the top 15 of most visited cities in the U.S. And we generate $200 million in revenue from those visitors every year. Pretty impressive for a city of only 400,000 people. Despite all this money flowing into our city, our streets flood every time it rains, we barely have a functional public transit system, our schools are underfunded, we are starved for access to affordable housing and the water isn't even safe to drink all the time. Our culture bearers, the working class people who make New Orleans what it is, who are the reason why 20 million people come to our little city on the river every year, are not seeing the benefits of the capital they are creating. What's up with that? Where's our money, man? In this episode, MarkAlain and Kenny continue the conversation we started with Mayor Cantrell a few episodes ago and dive into the history, context and complicated web of our local tax collection and how it exudes the systemic racism that has made New Orleans one of the consistent leaders in income inequality. Tune in to this episode of #ResistanceRadio and nerd out with us on tax policy!
This week MarkAlain and Kenny recap our recent interview with New Orleans Mayor Latoya Cantrell and begin to wade into the deep waters that is our local tax collection. Tune in to this week’s episode of #ResistanceRadio
On this very special episode of Resistance Radio, Kenny and MarkAlain talk with Mayor Cantrell about her plans for tax dedications. What does tax dedication mean? Tune in to hear how, for the past several decades, New Orleans has been systematically oppressed through an unfair system of tax revenue distribution. Mayor Cantrell explains that her program, #FairShare, is meant to collect the fair share of revenues that are being generated to be more equitably distributed among all New Orleanians, in the form of improved infrastructure, fair housing and transportation.
This week Kenny and MarkAlain do a deep dive explanation of how marginal tax rates work and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's proposed 60-70% tax rate for the highest U.S. earners. We also talk about last week's City Council hearing and vote on Short Term Rentals and the ongoing federal government shutdown which has left 800,000 federal employees without pay and is now the longest shutdown in U.S. history. Tune in this week to #ResistanceRadio!
Among a wide variety of other pursuits, Dr. MarkAlain Dery is an HIV doctor. Amid the staggeringly bad news about the rate of HIV infection in New Orleans second in the nation behind Miami is the good news that if you have to contract a serious illness say, diabetes, cancer, or HIV HIV is the one to pick. According to MarkAlain, you can get a simple and free HIV test called an "instie" and if you test positive for HIV your life expectancy is the same as a regular person who does not have HIV, if you regularly take one pill. And you re not going to infect anyone else, even your sex partners. Just for the record, MarkAlain also, runs a radio station called WHIV, plays bass in a number of bands, and hosts a podcast about social justice. John Paul Carmody and Jackson Purvis are two thirds of the New Orleans rock trio, South Jones. The third member of the band is any one of a number of rotating bass players. John Paul is from Omaha Nebraska and Jackson is from South Mississippi. They met via a Craig s List post and soon discovered their musical similarities and fondness for the same drugs, in that descending order. If all goes well, their soon to be released record, Breathing Room, is possibly going to be a game changer. If you take a listen to the song they play on this Happy Hour you ll no doubt agree. These guys are not just on something, they re onto something. Andrew Duhon says he has a bunch of songs that just aren t good enough to make it onto a record. He plays one here. The general consensus is that for anyone else this would be their standout best song they d ever written. Photos at Wayfare by Jill Lafleur.
Dr. MarkAlain Dery joins the show to talk about the upcoming mid-terms election, and specifically the Vote Yes on 2! Amendment to rectify the fact that Louisiana is only one of two states that can send someone to prison for life without a unanimous verdict. Louisiana is also the most incarcerated population in the world. While we agree on Yes on 2!, we talk about differences in our perspectives on the 2016 election and what’s next for the liberal progressive movement in America.
