Happy Emmajority Report Thursday to all who celebrate. Trump's tariffs are halted by a court ruling, and he is is big mad about that and the new term TACO (Trump Always Chickens Out) that's been ascribed to his tariffs by a Financial Times columnist. After that, Taylor Lorenz is with us to talk about the persistent political impact of the COVID pandemic and the government's response to it. Check out her video we play a part of (and the rest of her YouTube page for that matter) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zXrjlOE9e50&t=781s In the Fun Half, we are joined by Thursday regulars Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton to try to decipher Eric Adams' comparison of Betsy Ross to Bitcoin. It's a head scratcher. A new poll shows the Abundance Agenda is not as popular as public policy that would fight corruption and get money out of politics. Pretty f-ing granular! And Texas is about to pass a draconian anti-trans bill. It's an Emma-jority Thursday and we got a great show for you. Emma talks to Historian and Author Greg Grandin about his new book America, América: A New History of the New World. https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/747326/america-america-by-greg-grandin/ After that, writer Brian Merchant discusses his reporting on AI and it's encroachment on human jobs on his blog Blood in the Machine: https://www.bloodinthemachine.com/ After that we'll have Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton on, as is Thursday tradition. NYU Gallitan student Logan Rozos bravely recognized the Gaza genocide during his graduation speech, which has prompted the school to now withhold his diploma. Joe Rogan defends X's decision to allow Ye to post his new blatantly antisemitic single, and Kristi Noem runs interference in Congress for Trump's child-like interpretation of a clearly photoshopped image of Kilmar Abrego Garcia's tattoos. In the Fun Half, Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton join us to check in in Mark Zuckerberg and META's AI projects, which involve AI therapists, friends and girlfriends. He says this will help satiate some of our non-satiated demand for "connectivity." Stephen Miller goes on a bizarre diatribe about public schools in an attempt to justify why the administration is looking to defund the public school system. They also listen to the horrific account of a woman who was mistake for a pro-Palestinian protester and assaulted by a crowd of men outside a Chabad temple that was hosting an event with the far-right National Security Minister, the war criminal Itamar Ben-Gvir. She said the police largely stood by and watched the pro-Israel crowd assault her. On of our regular callers Annie gave an optimistic update on her situation, and is hoping to get across the finish line with her fundraising goal for her treatment for Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia. It's a jam-packed show for today's Emmajority Report, starting with some alarming news about the Trump administration cutting funding for vital research on women's health. After that, Emma talks to Jacob Silverman about Donald Trump's crypto shenanigan sand how the Trump camp is financially benefitting from manipulating the markets. Check out Jacob's latest piece for the Financial Times "Welcome to slop world: how the hostile internet is driving us crazy" https://www.ft.com/content/5d06bbb4-0034-493b-8b0d-5c0ab74bedef After that, Emma speaks with Abdel El Sayed, who has just launched his campaign for a Senate seat in Michigan and has the backing of Bernie Sanders. He talks about his experiences as a public health official and how they informed his political outlook and why he's putting health care and particularly Medicare for All at the heart of his platform. He also thinks the Democrats need to do better when it comes to keeping groups like AIPAC out of their campaigns. In the Fun Half, Emma will be joined by the usual Thursday crew, Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton. They check in on LA City Attorney Hydee Feldstein-Soto and why she's being credibly accused of bias against the pro-Palestinian protesters she's prosecuting. The gang also takes in Fox News' response to the Irish band Kneecap's anti-Israel protests at Coachella. It's a busy Thursday here at MR HQ, and Emma dives right into the significance Judge James Boasberg's finding cause to hold the Trump administration in criminal contempt for not adhering to his previous order on deportations. Meanwhile, Senator Chris Van Hollen is in El Salvador where he's been prevented from visiting his Kilmar Abrego Garcia. Then, Emma is joined by writer, activist and professor Naomi Klein about her new essay The rise of end times fascism. Naomi points out the new form that right wing authoritarianism has taken in finding ways to exit society and Earth itself. Naomi co-wrote the essay with Astra Taylor, which you can read here in The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/ng-interactive/2025/apr/13/end-times-fascism-far-right-trump-musk After that, infectious disease doctor MarkAlain Déry joins Emma in the studio to discuss the challenges facing public health under the Trump regime, especially from Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr. who continues to spread misinformation about any number of things, including about autism and vaccines. MarkAlain expresses his concern that essential programs that receive federal funding could now be in jeopardy, especially those that cater to marginalized communities, especially undocumented people. In the Fun Half, Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton are here to break down the video of Republican senator Chuck Grassley getting yelled at by his constituents at a town hall over the deportation of Kilmar Abrego Garcia. The group talks about how entrenched some of the support for Trump is among his base, even when his policies cost them their jobs. They also discuss how the attention on the Abrego Garcia is a moment when Democrats need to keep their foot on the gas and show voters that they are willing and able to fight for justice. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! The guests will be political analyst Omar Baddar on Israel's renewed attacks in Gaza, and Paris Marx, host of the podcast "Tech Won't Save Us," about how Elon Musk is running Tesla into the ground. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's tariff turmoil and responses in both the Senate and House, Mike Waltz's security issues, Laura Loomer's return to the White House, Israel's seizure of land in Gaza, a joint US-Israel attack on Syria, Netanyahu's visit to Hungary, and Eric Adams' announcement that he's running as an independent, before diving deeper into Trump's tariff announcement, including the bunk equation they used to calculate this policy, and the obvious, extensive impact it will have on everyday Americans. Omar Baddar then joins, jumping right into Israel's major escalations to their ongoing ethnic cleansing of Gaza, with Netanyahu's recent announcement that Israel would be going ahead with a full-scale land seizure in North Gaza, adding a “second Philadelphi Corridor” south of Gaza City amid their revamped military barrage, all under the dishonest pretense of saving the hostages. Baddar and Emma then look to Israel's expansion of hostilities even outside of the genocide of Palestinians, with repeated bombardments against Lebanon – including occasional strikes on Beirut – ongoing despite an alleged ceasefire, unpacking the country's (and Netanyahu's) extensive history of pushing an agenda of regional chaos to bolster their position as Middle East watchdogs for the West, with Israel serving major roles in spurring the US invasion of Iraq in 2003 and in gutting the Iran Nuclear deal under Trump 1.0. Omar wraps up by touching on the growing backlash to Israel's belligerency on the international stage, and whether there is hope to be found in both regional and global actors turning away from the US-Israel imperial coalition. Paris Marx then gets right into the wonderful revelations in Tesla's quarterly earnings report, walking through the devastating drop in sales amid mass recalls, a diversifying EV market, and overwhelming global backlash to the fascist politics of Elon Musk. Marx then tackles the particular failures of Tesla's *ONLY* new major model release in recent years with the Cybertruck, and how it represents the greater issue of allowing a deranged billionaire to make outrageous promises completely detached from the material reality of both his company and modern technology, before shifting to the explosive impact Chinese products are currently having on the EV market, with BYD proving clear affordability and profitability even in European markets, developments that are all in line with America's dwindling role as a global economic leader. Paris and Emma wrap up by examining the growing existential threat facing Elon Musk and his companies as backlash to his corrupt business practices and corrupt politics hits back at Tesla and Starlink profits in Europe and Canada, all while he continues to tie his billionaire lifestyle to the worth of those stocks. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they watch Trump Cabinet members come out of the woodwork to plead with the public not to panic or get upset over their complete decimation of the global economy and mass inflation it will cause. They also talk with Cassie from Indiana about state-based pushback to the Trump Administration, and listen to Senator Jim Banks' wild victim blaming as our public health apparatus faces massive job cuts, plus, your calls and IMs! It's Thursday! Emma welcomes Noah Kulwin to discuss the ongoing protests against Israel. First, Emma runs through updates on the Trump Administration's designation of Mike Waltz as fall guy, Der Spiegel's expose on Trump's Cabinets' security issues, GOP infighting, Kristi Noam's fascist photo op, the disappearing of a Tufts student, Trump's frozen funding freeze, the Trump Administration's attack on public health, Trump's tariffs, Musk's political bribes, and Israel's ongoing slaughter in Gaza, before watching Hegseth (with Trump's “help”) try to clear his name in the Signal scandal. Noah Kulwin then joins, first touching on his experience taking part in the JVP protest at Trump Tower in New York over the Trump Administration's disappearing of Columbia student activist Mahmoud Khalil, before diving deeper into the clear and thorough connection between the US' support for fascism abroad and the descent into fascism at home, as we watch Israel resume its genocide on the Palestinian people while legal residents are picked up off the street by plain-clothes officers over pro-Palestinian speech – a Tufts student the most recent. Expanding on the global context for our current moment, Kulwin also touches on the particular role of the War on Terror in bolstering the rapid expansion of our surveillance state amid xenophobic, nationalist fervor. After expanding on the role of Jewish organizing in standing up to this fascist crackdown, Noah wraps up by emphasizing the need to Get Organized! what that means, and how to go about it at this moment. After briefly touching on the Mega Marcha, a demonstration against the Trump administration's immigration policies, being held in Dallas this Saturday – which our planned second guest, Domingo García, chairman of the political arm of the League of United Latin American Citizens, helped organize – they wrap up the free half by highlighting Kristi Noam's insane fascist photo-op outside of a migrant cell in El Salvador. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Crowder and Co. breakdown over Mike Waltz giving the left an “easy own” by… accidentally leaking national security details to a journalist. They also talk with NotNick Fuentes from North Texas about the Atlantic's connection to the right, Henry from NC has a pitch for the minimum wage, and the MR Crew dives deep into the insane backlash to Rachel Zegler speaking up for Palestine at this moment, from Ben Shapiro to the nepo-baby son of a mega-producer. Al from Mass also calls in about organizing, and James Comer – get this – has a problem with NPR, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with David McWilliams, Irish economist and writer, to discuss Trump's interest in the presidency of William McKinley. Then, she speaks with Lily Greenberg Call, former political appointee in the Biden administration, to discuss the recent developments in the detention of Mahmoud Khalil. First, Emma runs through updates on the Senate's vote on cloture and the Continuing Resolution, Trump's mass layoffs, the gutting of the DOE, Trump's trade war with Europe, the falling stock market, Trump's failed nomination for CDC director, Tim Walz's political tour, the UN's independent inquiry into Israel's genocide, the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the Mayor of Miami's crackdown on free speech, and the attack on the IRS, before expanding on the ongoing fight within the US Senate to block the GOP's partisan Continuing Resolution which would effectively neuter Congress amid Trump's reign, and watching Markwayne Mullin accidentally give away the game on Trump's tariff war. David McWilliams then dives right into the historical context for Trump's obsession with William McKinley – 25th President of the United States – highlighting how the election of McKinley in 1896 served as a major turning point in the evolution of the Gilded Age, as a culmination of a populist push against growing economic consolidation amid increasing culture war and a rapidly growing (and changing) working class with an influx of European immigration, and the very clear parallels with how Trump is handling the similarities in this moment, from his alignment with the monopolists and oligarchs of the time, to his obsession with small territorial acquisitions while pushing an isolaitonist economic agenda. After touching on the end to McKinley with his assassination in 1901 and the major role his Vice President Teddy Roosevelt would play in pushing back against the political takeover of robber barons and monopolists, putting a bit of a damper on potential parallels to the Big Tech-backed JD Vance, McWilliams walks Emma through McKinley's expansive project to bolster the pockets of his wealthy donors, from cementing the shift to a gold standard (crypto reserve anyone?!) and bolstering rail monopoly at the expense of America's farming majority, to the inception of lobbying with the backing of his 1896 campaign by notorious businessman Mark Hanna (Musk), who would rally the wealthy elite behind McKinley to change the facts on the ground. Having briefly expanded on McKinley's imperial agenda, and the particular role it plays in creating an atmosphere of chaos to mask the kleptocracy at work, David looks to the extreme lengths Trump has taken McKinley tariff regime, applying them to quite literally every close ally the US has in such a drastic manner it offers little explanation outside of in-group speculation while the economy as a whole collapses. They wrap up the interview by touching on the role McKinleyism and the Gilded Age played in spurring the emergence of the US labor movement under FDR. Lily Greenberg-Call then joins as she and Emma parse through the abduction and detainment of Columbia University activist and Greencard holder/permanent US resident Mahmoud Khalil over his speech in support of a free Palestine, reflecting on the vast distance between the response Chuck Schumer gave – largely defending Israel and denouncing Khalil's speech – and that of Chris Murphy – who cites the criminalization of speech that goes against Trump's agenda in contrast with the happy embrace of explicitly Nazi speech. Next, they dissect the particularly disgusting way in which antisemitism has been abused over this fight, from the White House's explicit references to judaism in their flaunting of this authoritarian overstep, to the fact that the statute they're using to defend their action is grounded in the antisemitic McCarthyist movement, and the value of seeing Jewish Americans stand up and fight for Mahmoud Khalil's rights, wrapping up the interview by emphasizing the need to keep that momentum going, showing up in the streets to fight for Khalil and any other victims of the Trump regime. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack dweebs Tim Pool and Russell Brand's fear of a real punk rock lifestyle (shoutout Against Me!), before talking to Rob from DC about calling our Senators. They also do some side-by-side comparisons of NYC candidates for Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Andrew Cuomo in their response to the abduction of New Yorker Mahmoud Khalil at the hands of the Trump administration, before listening to Tommy Tuberville explain why its fine to treat protesters this way, actually, and watching economists struggle with explaining Trump's tariff agenda. They also reflect a little more on Against Me! and trans identity with Ramona Frankenstein, before Mimi from Colorado delivers a plea to save our federal land, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Allison J. Pugh, professor of sociology at Johns Hopkins University, to discuss her recent book The Last Human Job: The Work of Connecting in a Disconnected World. Then, she's joined by Zachary Foster, author of the Palestine Nexus newsletter, to discuss Trump's recent announcements and intentions to "take over" the Gaza Strip. First, Emma runs through updates on the DOJ's restriction on Elon & Cronies' access to Treasury data, skyrocketing union membership among federal employers, Musk's access to Health Payment Systems, cuts to the FAA and the destruction of USAID, the trickle of opposition from Democrats, Trump's intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza, Trump's ban of trans girls and women from athletic competition, US birthright citizenship, global warming, and brutal jail riots out of Congo, before diving a little deeper into the absurdly creepy stunt Trump attempted to pull with signing his most recent anti-trans legislation, and the violently inhumane response from the likes of Jesse Watters. Professor Allison Pugh then joins, diving right into the recent mass proliferation of Artificial Intelligence across industries, and the dangerous encroachment it has initiated on what Pugh has dubbed “Connective Labor” – occupations where the literal act of a human seeing another human for who they are is the underlying engine for the valued outcome for the consumer, be it education, healthcare, hairdressers, sales, securities, and on – pushing society, with help from growing feelings of alienation, into a depersonalization crisis. After briefly expanding on the extension of this intrusion of AI into necessarily interpersonal roles, Professor Pugh looks at how the AI takeover over this work has been driven by this “Moneyball”-esque, Venture Capitalist, industrial-model of efficiency stripping back entire professions to emphasize data collection and output over the actual labor (and human connection) at hand, often resulting in the full-scale degradation of these jobs. Allison and Emma also touch on the AI industry's insistence on selling you their product as a replacement for either a more practical social alternative, human labor, or human connection, before wrapping up the interview with the overwhelming issue of Big Tech's complete capture of our information networks, be they communications platforms, databases, or (now) academia, and what it will take to push humanity back to doing their own critical thinking. Zachary Foster and Emma then jump right into Trump's recent declaration of intent to ethnically cleanse Gaza under U.S. control while sitting beside Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu, touching on the stunning revelation of the White House's seeming internal numbers on the total Gazan death count (around 500k) as well as the ongoing struggle to survive outside of conflict in Gaza. Next, Foster dives into the extensive role Saudi Arabia plays in pushing back against the US-Israeli imperial advancements, with their outward insistence on Palestinian statehood somewhat conflicted by Crown Prince MBS' extensive efforts to normalize relations with Israel as well as to launch Saudi Arabia into an era of “techno-utopianism,” two agendas perfectly-aligned with the Trump Administration, before touching on the stunning international solidarity being shown on behalf of Palestine in the wake of Trump breaking from Biden's tact of *silently* supporting the ethnic cleansing. Wrapping up, Zachary looks to Israel's ongoing military pivot to escalating violence in the West Bank, and why U.S. and international pressure has been the only thing that ever restrained the Zionist state's repeated attempts to ethnically cleanse Palestine. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they highlight a killer dissection of the Big Tech Oligarchy's dream for “Network State” by Joanna of Blonde Politics and dive deep into Big Tech's aggrievement- and power-driven evolution in the public eye. They also watch the NYT help Steve Bannon grapple with Trump allowing a foreign billionaire to take over the US, and Trump and Netanyahu gleefully announce the “official” plan to ethnically cleanse Gaza, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Erik Baker, professor of the history of science & labor at Harvard University, to discuss his recent book Make Your Own Job: How the Entrepreneurial Work Ethic Exhausted America. Then, she speaks with Teresa Romero, president of the United Farm Workers (UFW), to discuss the Trump administrations's immigration executive orders and directives, and their impact on UFW workers. First, Emma runs through updates on a major plane crash out of DC in the wake of Trump's FAA hiring freeze and gutting of the aviation safety committee, the passage of the Laken Riley Act, Trump's new immigrant detention camp in Gitmo, Trump's myriad anti-migrant EOs, the confirmation hearings of Tulsi Gabbard and Kash Patel, Meta's $25m gift to Trump, Bob Menendez's prison sentence, and Israel's ongoing assault on Palestinians, before expanding on the context for the major crash outside of Reagan Airport in DC yesterday. Professor Erik Baker then joins, diving right into the history of America's particular work ethic strain of entrepreneurialism, unpacking its rise in the early 20th Century's major job shortage, with unemployment reaching nearly a quarter of the country by the peak of the Great Depression, shifting the dominant ethos from one of hard work to one of creating your own work, and birthing the entrepreneurial spirit that dominates the post-industrialized neoliberal gig-economy of today. Expanding on the evolution of American entrepreneurialism, Professor Baker explores how the rise of this ethos was met with industries eager to exploit it, from the rise of “self-help” and the gig economy to the rise of cryptocurrencies and sports gambling, all encouraging the exploration of alternative, often precarious lines of “work,” wrapping up the interview with a deep dive into how entrepreneurship sees this precarity, and the failures that often result from it, as a validation of the successes, allowing for the spirit to continuously reinvent itself through crisis, personal or economic. Teresa Romero then joins, as she and Emma dive right into the recent threats mailed to various United Farm Workers locations over Trump's incoming wave of deportations, exploring how, over less than two weeks, immigrants – regardless of citizenship – have been overtaken by an environment of fear and insecurity over their (and their family's and community's) safety, with no institution – from school to church to work – safe from ICE's indiscriminate raids. Expanding on this, Romero unpacks the central role undocumented people play in the US farming industry, and the overwhelming exploitation and abuse they face without institutional backing from unions (or, in theory, the government), with growers and employers – despite their obvious reliance on the labor of undocumented folks – eager to take advantage of the increasing insecurity as Trump's reforms come into practice, before they wrap up the free half by unpacking the need to create a genuine path to citizenship for farm workers whose presence is so important to our country. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack Pete Hegseth and Jesse Watters' gleeful discussion of Trump's new 30k capacity migrant detention camp at Guantanamo, and watch RFK's myriad hypocrisies put on display at his confirmation hearing. Dmitri from Germany unpacks the dearth of non-Zionist perspectives on Gaza in Russian media, and Bob Menendez starts his Eric Adams-esque appeal to Trump, plus the MR Crew unpacks the ridiculousness of “MAHA,” and their experience with the inefficiency (and absurdity) of modern policing, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Jason Koebler of 404 Media to discuss big tech's influence on the Trump administration and efforts to decentralize social media. Then, she speaks with Nayna Gupta, policy director at the American Immigration Council, to discuss the Trump administration's executive orders on immigration, as well as the shutting down of the CBP One app for prospective U.S. citizens. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's aggressive anti-immigrant push, Trump's crippling of the administrative state, the nomination of Tulsi Gabbard, Senate GOP's anti-abortion push, a major labor win for Vegas hotel workers, LA's newest brush fire, and Israel's intensifying slaughters in the West Bank, before doing a little reflecting on Russell Vought, Trump's nominee for head of the Office of Management and Budget, and his attempt to shirk answering for his proclaimed desire to “traumatize” the federal bureaucrats working for him. Jason Koebler then joins, first tackling his assessment of the still-ambiguous TikTok ban, with this past week's brief announcement of Trump's app-saving measure yet to solidify, the future of the app balancing between the hope of a passive DOJ and the potential of a US-based billionaire buyer, also touching on the potential identity of said buyer (Oracle CEO Larry Ellison). After expanding on the other domestic billionaire beneficiaries of a TikTok ban (namely Meta), Koebler and Emma shift to the topic of AI – the overwhelming focus of the Tech industry at this point – and its major struggles to meet the consumer demands of utility and affordability, before looking to the value of a decentralized approach to the Tech industry and social media in providing users a cohesive and interoperable experience. Nayna Gupta then joins as she and Emma unpack the immediate impact of Trump's devastating attacks on the US immigration system, including the despair among migrants already hindered by the Biden Administration's legally- and morally-dubious attempts to undermine the asylum system as their final (legal) path into the country – via the CBP One app process – is shut down. Expanding on this, Gupta tackles the some 200k Trump has left stranded and desperate on our border, and the absurdity of claiming this does anything but further destabilize our country and the immigration system he supposedly wants to fix, a critique also applicable to the ongoing bipartisan passage of the Laken Riley Act, concluding the interview with the need for Democrats to present a genuine alternative to Trump's border militancy – something Biden and Harris objectively failed to do – centered around effective, efficient, and humane solutions to this problem that provide an actual infrastructure for legal pathways to citizenship. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they talk with Ally from New Hampshire about the inhumanity that conservatives hate to hide, and watch Eric Adams try to save his image with help from… Tucker Carlson. They also watch Newsmax try to paint the Pope as Satan-pilled over his criticisms of Trump, and speak with Emma's Honor Thesis from North Texas as they dive deep into the major role churches do and can play in community building and organizing in the American South. British Journalists and apparent Nazi sympathizer Angela Epstein defends Elon Musk's excitability and cleverness that lead to his Sieg Heil at Trump's inauguration, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Annelle Sheline, research fellow in the Middle East program at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, to discuss the reporting around a recently brokered ceasefire deal in Israel & Gaza. Then, she speaks with Jael Holzman, senior reporter at HeatMap News, to discuss her recent piece entitled "The Growing Push to Ban Renewable Energy in Oklahoma." First, Emma runs through updates on Netanyahu's torpedoing of the alleged ceasefire, including an escalation killing dozens more in Gaza, ProPublica's report on Biden's suppression of dissent over Gaza, Trump's CEO cabal, the US' TikTok Ban, Trump's AG nom, the FTC's report on UnitedHealthcare's overcharging of cancer patients by nearly 1000%, and compensation for women's college basketball players, before expanding briefly on the odd power plays between Trump and Biden over the developing TikTok Ban. Dr. Annelle Sheline then joins, diving right into this week's development of a predictably brief ceasefire in Gaza, including Netanyahu's immediate refusal to abide by its requirement and the following escalation resulting in some 70 dead, unpacking why Bibi has once again sabotaged a deal, why Trump still wants peace for his inauguration, and why Netanyahu's sights for the second Trump Administration are set on the West Bank. Next, Dr. Sheline and Emma shift to unpacking the future of the normalization attempt between Israel and Saudi Arabia – a process that the Biden Administration happily picked up off of Trump 1.0 – and the genuine danger of Trump extending the guarantee of uncritical military support that we provide Israel to Saudi Arabia as well, before wrapping up with a conversation on the particular role the Biden Administration's support for Israel's genocide in Gaza had on undermining support for Kamala Harris' candidacy. Jael Holzman then looks to Oklahoma as she walks Emma through the developing push to ban renewable energy projects locally, exploring how the expansion of the industry alongside a growing reactionary movement helped bolster this drive, despite its obvious potential negative impacts. Expanding on this, Holzman and Emma briefly explore the evolution of this “Green MAGA” movement as exemplified by RFK Jr., and the increasing problem of a green energy incentive structure based on tax credits, before wrapping up by tackling the extractive and material incentives for Trump's fantasy land grab of Greenland. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they dive deep into the exposé of Elon Musk's gamer fraud, talk with Jersey Boy from Milwaukee about engaging in disagreement, and watch Sam Husseini's righteous and confrontational action at Blinken's final press conference. Jay from Oregon unpacks some finer details of the nurses' strike, Pete Hegseth shies away from promising not to be a hypocrite, and Jeff from CA shares his insight into Hegseth's problematic history when it comes to a Defense Secretary nomination, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with John Carl Baker, director of programs at Ploughshares, to discuss the ongoing political unrest in South Korea. Then, she speaks with Giorgio Cafiero, CEO of Gulf State Analytics & adjunct assistant professor at Georgetown University, to discuss the recent developments in Syria after rebel forces entered Aleppo. First, Emma runs through updates on the search for the UnitedHealthcare CEO's killer, SCOTUS' oral arguments on Tennessee's ban on trans care for minors, Memphis Police discrimination, Trump's elite-led cabinet, questions about Tulsi Gabbard's loyalties, Pete Hegseth's myriad embarrassments, Israel's genocide in Gaza, Trump's legal woes, and the future of Democratic leadership, before parsing a little deeper through yesterday's oral arguments for US v. Skrmetti in front of the Supreme Court, and the fear that they might uphold Tennessee's violently transphobic policy. John Carl Baker then joins, diving right into a step-by-step breakdown of how South Korean President Yoon's attempt (and failure) to declare and enforce martial law last Tuesday developed, beginning with his declaration and assembling of soldiers and police around the National Assembly, through the rampant protests to allow legislatures to enter the assembly to vote down Yoon's attempted coup, and to the overwhelming 190-0 (in an assembly of 300) veto of the President's martial law. After briefly touching on the limited vocal support for Yoon from among his conservative allies, Baker steps back to explore the history of South Korea's conservative ties to dictatorship, beginning with Japan's brutal 30-year occupation of Korea through the end of the Second World War – an occupation bolstered by cooperation and support from conservative, capitalist, and right-wing Koreans – and through the sequential regimes of Chon Doo-hwan and Park Chung-hee from the 1960s-80s, with Park Geun-hye (daughter of Chung-hee) even rising to the Presidency just a decade ago only to be impeached over her corrupt practices, also unpacking the continued prevalence of authoritarian strains within the South Korean right over the last century. He and Emma then look at the non-coup-related failures of Yoon's regime that created both his overwhelming unpopularity and the strong opposition he sought to undermine via coup, wrapping up the interview by unpacking the role of the US in backing Yoon's regime, and what the ideal future of US-Korean relations would look like to the Korean electorate. Professor Giorgio Cafiero then joins, first running through updates on the recent sweeping offensives by Syrian rebels, successfully taking both Aleppo and Hama from the Assad regime, before taking a sharp step back as he walks us through the evolution of the 13-year Civil War, beginning with the Arab spring and spurring the intervention of myriad regional and international actors, through the 2015 intensification of conflict at the hand of increased Russian support for Assad and Iranian-backed groups, and to the lull in tensions that started in 2020, only to break this past week. After parsing through the more specific history of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and the deep and complex ties between the Syrian and Iranian regimes, Emma and Professor Cafiero tackle the prevalent role of external conflicts in how the impact of these Syrian Rebel conquests will unfold, with Iran's involvement in Hezbollah's conflict with Israel and Russia's ongoing invasion of Ukraine giving two major parties conflicting interests. Cafiero expands on the precarious state of the Syrian state at this moment, looking both at what that means for a potential (however brief) lull in conflict and for the future of the Syrian government, before wrapping up with the ongoing role of Israeli relations in shaping Middle Eastern politics. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they listen to Eddie from Fort Worth's Stetson Kennedy recommendations, talk with Gary from North Carolina about the divide between Trump voters and down-ballot GOP voters, and admire Jane Fonda's performance on Bill Maher. Meg from Seattle unpacks the harrowing and life-threatening impacts of repressive reproductive care, and Megyn Kelly aids in the attempted resuscitation of Pete Hegseth's potential career, plus, your calls and IM! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Mike Prysner of the Empire Files to discuss Tulsi Gabbard's nomination to be U.S. Director of National Intelligence. Then, she speaks with journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss Rep. Nancy Mace's recent decision to introduce legislation to bar Rep. Sarah McBride, the only trans legislator in the upcoming Congress, from using the Capitol Hill bathrooms. First, Emma runs through updates on the ICC's issuing of arrest warrants for the leaders behind Israel's genocide of Palestinians, Israel's new one-sided ceasefire pitch for Lebanon, the failure of Bernie's Israel resolution in the Senate, the passage of the anti-non-profit bill in the House, US military aid to Ukraine, the Gaetz ethics report, Pete Hegseth's history of sexual assault allegations, and Linda McMahon's history of hiring people with sexual assault allegations, before watching a little more from the UN as they finally begin to hold Israel to account for their ethnic cleansing of Gaza. Mike Prysner then joins, diving right into Trump's pick of one Tulsi Gabbard for his Director of National Intelligence, and the oddly underwhelming critique of her in the face of myriad problematic potential appointments, tackling how most of the mainstream criticisms of her focus on her odd foreign policy beliefs (support for dictators, Edward Snowden), leaving her deep ties to a deeply ideological religious organization untouched. Expanding on this latter element, Prysner parses through the history and evolution of the Science of Identity Foundation, a religious organization (or ‘cult' to some ex-members) founded by former Hare Krishna member Chris Butler, who – claiming to be THE messenger from God – established and grew this community around himself, with explicit, long-term plans to establish and grow their role in American politics, first taking root in Hawaii with the rise of Gabbard's parents, before she, having been groomed for the role from a young age, became the first elected to Congress. Going even deeper, Mike walks Emma through the central ideological beliefs of the organization, and how they fundamentally shape their education around islamophobia and homophobia, with a near-constant exposure to rampantly and explicitly anti-muslim and anti-LGBTQ sermons from Butler himself, ingraining these beliefs in children, before they step back to examine the community's history of intimidation and harassment of ex-members and critics. Wrapping up, Prysner unpacks Tulsi's role as a political chameleon, from her odd foreign policy takes to her Bernie-to-leaving-the-left pipeline, as a reflection of the organization's deep desire to climb the rungs of power – something expressed during her time in the military as well – and paints a picture of the role the Gabbard family play within the Science of Identity Foundation as a whole. And in the Fun Half, Emma, Matt Binder, Brandon Sutton, and the MR Crew react to the breaking news that former Rep. Matt Gaetz withdrew his nomination to be Trump's incoming Attorney General, and how some new exclusive CNN reporting on his conduct may have contributed to his withdrawal. The crew also strolls down memory lane to remember when Gaetz defended his relationship with his (completely real) adopted son, Nestor. They then look into the grisly allegations outlined in a 2017 police report regarding sexual assault investigation into Trump's Defense Secretary pick, Pete Hegseth. After, they check in on Emma's spicy appearance on "Piers Morgan Uncensored", where Emma made Piers visibly uncomfortable because a woman wouldn't listen to him telling her to be quiet. Then, she speaks with Sina Toossi, senior fellow at the Center for International Policy, to discuss Trump's cabinet appointments when it comes to foreign policy. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's pick of Matt Gaetz for Attorney General just before the release of his ethics report, the GOP's Senate leadership fight, Mike Johnson's plea to Trump, a Pennsylvania election recount for the Senate race, Elon's grating personality, Biden's gift to Trump, Russia's escalation in the wake of the reelection of Donald Trump, the prosecution of Marine Le Pen, the NLRB, malpractice in the investigation of the death of Nex Benedict, New York's congestion pricing, and the sale of Alex Jones' InfoWars to the Onion, also briefly reflecting on the future of the Matt Gaetz nomination. Jean Su then joins, jumping right into the unfortunate timing of Trump's reelection as the ever-insufficient COP29 environmental conference is held in fossil-fuel haven Azerbaijan, as she and Emma unpack the extreme limitations (largely pushed by the US) of the Paris Agreement, and why Trump's plan to withdraw from the agreement might, in fact, open up an opportunity for the international community to explore greater economic, environmental, and energy alternatives on the global scale. After expanding on the myriad insufficiencies and clear western-centricity in the existing Paris Agreement, and the importance of giving countries in the global south – where the impact of the climate catastrophe is greatest – a greater role at the table, Su explores how the battle over climate change is shifting drastically from one between rich and poor nations to one between rich and poor people. Wrapping up, Julie and Emma tackle the lackluster progression to the climate transition in the US under the Biden Administration, and why pushing against capitalism is central to this fight moving forward. Next, Sina Toossi and Emma look to the developing picture of Trump's cabinet in his upcoming administration, as neocons like Marco Rubio, Mike Waltz, and Pete Hegseth are named to the supposedly-anti-war candidate's office, before touching on the major role that radical Christian Zionists seem to play as well. After expanding on what a Christian Zionist administration would mean for the ongoing genocide and ethnic cleansing of Palestine, Sina and Emma wrap up with the balance a Trump presidency would see between accelerating the development of a multipolar world order and wreaking mass chaos, disruption, and death, with a particular focus on Iran and the Middle East when it comes to that latter point. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they bask in Alex Jones' reaction to the Onion purchasing InfoWars at a bankruptcy auction, before diving deep into an NYT article that makes a few things clear, from the incomprehensible rationale to the evident existence of the shy Trump voter. They also talk with David from San Fran about the role of oil in Israel's ongoing annexation of Gaza, parse through the absurd endeavor that has been Trump naming his cabinet picks (much to Mike Johnson's chagrin), and discuss the future of green cards and immigration with Alex from California. Joe from Jersey unpacks the connection between anti-semitism and enthusiastic Zionism, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Daniel Nichanian, editor-in-chief of Bolts Magazine, to discuss the state of the rest of the downballot races after Tuesday's results. Then, she speaks with Usamah Andrabi, communications director & spokesperson for Justice Democrats, to discuss what's next for Democrats heading into 2025. First, Emma runs through updates on Harris' election concession, the DNC blame game, exit polling, abortion's performance, the lingering House fight, Netanyahu's Trump bootlicking, the Trump Administration, and major wildfires in California, before watching Astead Herndon's astute reflections on Dems' failure to run on anything but the status-quo and abortion. Daniel Nichanian then joins, diving right into the overwhelming rejection of Harris, particularly as an extension of a deeply unpopular Biden Administration, and the major defeats seen by Dem Senate candidates, before walking through the stark contrast between that electoral apathy and the genuine success of progressive referendum and state-level progressive campaigns, briefly touching on the lingering (though unlikely) possibility of Democrats' winning a slim majority in the House. After expanding on the stratification of voting on the Presidency versus down-ballot, Daniel and Emma tackle the major state legislature losses handed to Democrats in Michigan, and Minnesota, and why the future of Congressional campaign fights may lie in the northeast. Usamah Andrabi and Emma then parse through the ongoing failure of Democrats' evident disassociation from the working-class identity that had carried their coalition for decades, refusing to run campaigns that aren't geared around unifying a mythical centrist coalition (that also includes Republicans and Progressives) driven by celebrities and billionaires and grounded in diet-right-wing politics, and emphasizing abstract economic conditions over the material, lived reality with which everyday Americans struggle. They also touch on the major drag of Harris' commitment to the overwhelmingly unpopular status quo under Biden, and unpack the future of a fight for a Democratic party that actually fights for and with the working class. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack their election reflections, tackle how Biden set up Harris to fail, and highlight some major distinctions between Obama's winning campaign and Dems' last few major failures. Joe Scarborough blames cancel culture and identity politics for Harris losing, and the MR Team dives deep into Democrats' persistent failure to set the narrative in mainstream media, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Aaron Kleinman, director of research for the States Project at Future Now, to discuss what to watch next week on Election Day. Then, she speaks with Georgia State Rep. Ruwa Romman to discuss her after-action plan upon voting for Kamala Harris. First, Emma runs through updates on early voting, swing state polling, Trump's garbage stunt, PA voting, Elon's Super PAC exploitation, Trump's healthcare and immigration agenda, Biden's state department coverup of Israel's genocide, Israel's demolition of southern Lebanon, and flash floods in Spain, before watching Jesse Watters prove exactly why conservative men and such a ridiculous danger to their spouses. Aaron Kleinman then joins, as he and Emma jump right into addressing this election's role as yet another “closest” election in US history, what signs point to that not being the case (largely favoring Harris), and why the thin margin being shown in polling must be at least addressed by the Harris campaign. Kleinman then steps back to parse through the “demolition derby” that is the state legislature races across the country, including the wildly close races across Pennsylvania's Senate and House, the Democrats' push in Florida and Wisconsin, and the role certain North Carolina races play as bellwethers for the US presidential election, before wrapping up with a quick assessment of the key legislatures Dems are seeking to flip, and what to make of the GOP push in Blue havens like New York and California. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they parse a little deeper through the absurdity of Trump's garbage stunt, talk with JR from Philly about polling problems, and address the topic of pacifist invasion defense with Alfred from Texas. They also unpack TYT's shallow discussion on fascism, Garrett from Northern Virginia discusses misinformation around late-term abortions, and Elon Musk struggles to capture the hearts of the US electorate with his blatant sexism and exploitation. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Craig Gent, north of England editor at Novara Media, to discuss his recent book Cyberboss: The Rise of Algorithmic Management and the New Struggle for Control at Work. First, Emma runs through updates on Harris' CNN town hall, Trump-Harris polling, a new allegation of Trump's sexual assault (with a bonus of Epstein's involvement), Elon Musk's DOJ troubles, the owner of the LA Times' editorial issues, the Boeing machinist strike, Israel's devastation of Lebanon, foreign aid to Lebanon, Michigan AG Nessel's discriminatory crackdown on pro-Palestine protesters, and the CFPB, before diving a little deeper into Harris' better answers on CNN last night. Craig Gent then joins, diving right into the mass proliferation of AI and algorithmic practices, not as a replacement for physical or technical labor, but as a replacement for management, exploring how the traditional role of human managers of overseeing a workplace has been replaced with automated systems that employ everything from gamification to surveillance and punishment to keep production in line with neoliberal aims of endless growth. Expanding on this, Gent walks through how these systems serve to further atomize and isolate an already alienated workforce, creating a supposedly infallible system that dictates their every move and completely obfuscates the power dynamics at play, resulting in a working environment with little to no space for agency, dignity, or solidarity, before briefly touching on how workers are desperately seeking for any way to leverage agency in these workspaces. Craig also highlights the pressing need for unions to open up their awareness to the threat of this technology, not as a tool that COULD be used to exploit them, but as ones that were explicitly created TO exploit them, working to suppress and pull back the exploitative nature of these systems rather than attempting to “share” in the benefit of this exploitation. Emma also tackles Bill Ackman's defense of Trump's appreciation of Adolf Hitler. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Tucker Carlson bring fascism to the TP gooning party, unpack Harris' unchanging stance on Israel, and talk with Daniel from LA about LA's city council race between Jurado and De Leon. Doctor Dragon Rider has some qualms with the show and highlights his research into an interesting conspiracy around the dark money coming from Russia to the conservative mediasphere. Matt Walsh tackles the connection between babysitting and being the President of the United States, and today's crew unpacks the disgusting state of panic of the zionist movement as its imperialist hypocrisies come to the fore, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Hamilton Nolan, labor writer at In These Times and author of the How Things Work newsletter on SubStack, to discuss his recent book The Hammer: Power, Inequality, and the Struggle for the Soul of Labor. First, Emma runs through updates on Harris' recent sit-down on Fox, Lina Khan's role at the FTC under Biden, polling, Israel's ongoing offensives and genocide in Gaza, US aid to Israel, Biden's EPA, Georgia's election shenanigans, Jimmy Carter's age 100 ballot, DeSantis' war on Florida's abortion ballot measure, and a landmark settlement over the LA Catholic Church's systemic sexual abuse, before diving a little deeper into assessments of Harris' antagonistic interview on Fox. Hamilton Nolan then joins, diving right into the tight-knit and interdependent relationship between social movements and the institutions that cement the progress these movements seek, unpacking the central role labor unions have played as a ground zero for channeling the energy of social unrest into concrete political progress. After expanding on the disintegration of the state of labor in the US over the last 70 years, with even Biden – perhaps the most pro-union president over that time – overseeing a one-point drop in union rates, and the factors that drove that drop (namely staunch anti-union, anti-organizing, and pro-corporation legislation), Nolan steps back to explore how the environment that this dearth of union power has created makes it exceedingly difficult to push back against it, creating a completely asymmetrical battle between workers and corporations, and why the recent renaissance of labor consciousness – bolstered by folks like Sarah Nelson, Shawn Fian, and Felix Allen – must be capitalized on not just through legislation, by but widening and organizing the millions of Americans that still exist outside of these institutions, something essential to maintaining the progress that these unions can cement. Hamilton and Emma also touch on the major role labor is playing in pushing back against the anti-democratic (and anti-labor) urges of US imperialism, wrapping up the interview by exploring the changing image of the American worker (and the American union member), and why that must be embraced. Emma also touches on Trump's egotistic and anti-social musings about the state of immigration under Biden-Harris. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they talk with El Connipción from San Antonio about Ethan Klein and the conflation of Zionism and Judaism, watch Ezra Klein respond truly horrendously to Ta-Nehisi Coates challenging his inherent biases, and discuss the hypocrisy of White Supremacist rhetoric with Todd from Raleigh. Elon and Tucker bond over being complete and utter charlatans, while Krystal Ball does her best to unpack exactly Saager Enjeti is an idiot, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Adam Hanieh, development studies academic based in the UK, to discuss his recent book Crude Capitalism: Oil, Corporate Power, and the Making of the World Market. Then, she speaks with Greg Stoker, co-host of the Colonial Outcasts podcast, to discuss Israel's recent offensive into Lebanon. First, Emma runs through updates on the release of Jack Smith's new brief on Trump's Jan 6th case, Elon's secret funding of GOP PACs and candidates, Biden-Harris disaster response to Helene, climate change, Harris polling, Israel's expanding offensives in the Middle East, the devastation of Gazan families by Israel, Facebook's suppression, the Longshoremen strike, Jordan Neely's killer, and the presidency of Claudia Sheinbaum, before parsing a little deeper through Jack Smith's Jan 6th briefing, including his approach to SCOTUS' ridiculous immunity qualifiers and some extra insights into the day of January 6th itself. Adam Hanieh then joins, briefly touching on his lived experience in the Middle East before diving deep into the central role that the evolution of fossil fuels has played in shaping Western hegemony over the past century and a half, from the rise of coal directly fueling the growth of the British Empire, and well through the “transition” to oil (really more of an addition than transition) and the rise of US Empire. Expanding on this latter point, Hanieh walks Emma through the rise of the oil industry in the mid-20th Century as a product of monopoly, with near-complete vertical integration in an industry dominated by seven companies (five of which were American), also touching on the major role oil reserves in the Persian Gulf played in the evolution of the Cold War, as the US stepped in for dwindling British and French colonial power in the Middle East, establishing a strong alliance with the Saudi regime before Israel's success in the 1967 war added another major US proxy in the region, with even greater control over the Suez Canal – two relationships that remain central to US interests with the ongoing push for the Abraham Accords. After expanding on the role of the US in bolstering instability and insecurity in the region to secure their influence, Adam wraps up by unpacking the evolution of OPEC and its role as a supposedly decolonial institution headed by a major US-ally and authoritarian regime in Saudi Arabia. Greg Stoker and Emma tackle the rapid expansion of Israel's ongoing military campaign into a full-scale regional conflict, with Israel launching a full-scale terror campaign across Lebanon before advancing a typically collectively punitive bombing campaign against Hezbollah personnel, as well this week's Iran-launched barrage on Tel Aviv. Stoker continues, tackling the glaring parallels between Israel's ongoing invasion of Lebanon and their complete failure in the 2006 war, parsing through the difficulties Israel faces in constantly warring with decentralized guerrilla factions, and exploring Israel's potential responses to Iran's controlled assault. Wrapping up, Greg and Emma tackle the U.S' role as a behind-the-scenes broker between Iran and Israel, and assess the devastating impact Israel's bloodthirst has had on its economy. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Brendon from San Diego about Harris' attempt to appeal to the center-right, discuss Trump's recent invocations of William McKinley, and watch the Longshoreman Union President vocalize support for Julie Su and call out Fox News… all live on Fox. Pamela from Puerto Rico unpacks PR's shitshow of an election year, Chris Hayes and Ta-Nehisi Coates tackle the “moral abomination” of Israel, and one of Bari Weiss' many conservative grifter networks does some conservative grifting, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Jeff Schuhrke, assistant professor in labor studies at SUNY Empire State University, to discuss his recent book Blue-Collar Empire: The Untold Story of US Labor's Global Anticommunist Crusade. Then, she speaks with Seamus Malekafzali, freelance writer and journalist, proprietor of the Seamus Malekafzali newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent Israeli offensive into Lebanon. First, Emma runs through updates on the indictment of Eric Adams, Netanyahu's visit to the UN, Israel's devastating offensives in Lebanon and Gaza, election spending, the GOP's anti-Haitian attacks, US-Israel aid, Harris' cozying up to crypto, Lina Khan vs. AI, Mark Robinson, and Hurricane Helene, before parsing a little deeper through the beautifully idiotic actions outlined in the fed's Adams indictment. Professor Jeff Schuhrke then joins, diving right into the history of the AFL-CIO's internal cold war and the havoc it wreaked on the institution's organizing capacities, stepping back to outline the start difference in organizing of the then-separate AFL and CIO during the union boom at the peak of the Great Depression in the 1930s, with the Congress of Industrial Organizations taking on a grassroots approach, organizing across the spectrum of the working class to improve class consciousness, including among the growing communist factions in the US, and thus rapidly and drastically expanding their base, unionizing massive corporations, and establishing many openly-communist-led unions, all nationwide, a strategy directly contrasted by the American Federation of Labor's establishment and anti-communist tact of this era. Moving into the 1940s, Professor Schuhrke explores how the post-war period, between the overwhelming backlash to a wave of strikes in 1945, the growth of an anti-communist government-backed military industry, and the onset of the McCarthyist Red Scare, saw a complete inversion of the growing labor power of the last decade, with full-scale communist purges and the GOP's takeover of Congress crippling both the numbers and the rights that had so bolstered labor, resulting in a decimated CIO limping to join the AFL in 1955. From here, Jeff walks Emma through the rapid expansion of the AFL-CIO's anti-communist aims, as funding poured in from the State Department to sponsor an international effort by the labor federation fundamentally conflating anti-communist fear-mongering with labor organizing, be it through worker training or illegal, mafia-backed intimidation practices, putting any attempt to unify the working class to the side as labor took a back seat to US empire, with union rates reflecting exactly that. They wrap up the interview by tackling what we can learn from this period of corruption and degradation as the US finds itself amid a labor renaissance. Séamus Malekafzali then walks Emma through the past few weeks of Israel's terror campaign on Lebanon, first tackling the brief retaliatory attacks from Hezbollah in late August following Israel's assassination of commander Fuad Shukr that preceded Israel's escalation, before diving deep into the material impact of this offensive, between the wide-scale terrorism of Israel's rigged pagers and communications devices, to their following record-setting bombardments in South Lebanon. After stepping back to explore how Israel's offensives in Lebanon and against Hezbollah have been central to the IDF developing their tactics of collective punishment, Séamus wraps up with how these tactics have devastated South Lebanon over the last week, pushed the population into a complete crisis, and what it means for the future of the Lebanese people and Zionist expansion. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack the absurd controversy developing around Chappelle Roan's statement critiquing the Democratic Party (while still saying she'll vote Harris), and the predictably disgusting (and unsuccessful) backlash to Bisan Owda's Emmy nomination. Mike in Denver has some questions about Colorado's ranked-choice referendum, Sophie from Vienna discusses organizing the Palestine Congress, Vienna, and the MR Crew tackles Clay Higgins' decision to join in on the rest of the GOP's anti-Haitian bigotry, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Noah Kulwin and Brendan James to discuss the most recent season of the Blowback podcast. Then, she speaks with Ross Barkan, contributing writer at New York Magazine and columnist at Crain's New York, to discuss his recent piece published in The Nation entitled "Is Eric Adams's Luck About to Run Out?" First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's attacks on civilians in Lebanon, the UN General Assembly's overwhelming vote to end Israel's military presence in Gaza and the West Bank, reporting on Biden's weapons transfers, the uncommitted movement, the teamsters' lack of a presidential endorsement, swing state polling, New York State's Democratic Party problem, the Fed, Russian offensives in Ukraine, Beshear's conversion therapy ban, and dropping overdose rates in the US, before parsing a little more thoroughly through the developing story of Israel's en-masse attack of Lebanese citizens (Hezbollah or not) via the use of rigged communications technologies. Emma is then joined by Noah Kulwin and Brendan James as they outline why they chose Cambodia for the focus of the fifth season of Blowback, unpacking its role as a central (and emblematic) node in the constellation of US intervention in Southeast Asia during the Cold War. Expanding on this, Kulwin and James dive into the complex cast of characters that dominate this season, first tackling the Nixon-Kissinger paring that set the blueprint for the entire thing, first sabotaging Vietnam peace negotiations in 1968 to help ensure a GOP victory, before centering a strategy of “Peace with Honor,” by which Nixon meant a shift to more expansive bombing campaigns, and immediately expanding said campaign by pushing Cambodian Royal Norodom Sihanouk to embrace a US carpet bombing campaign on his country (not war, totally not war), all while hiding the entire campaign behind a dual reporting system, separate books, and direct, behind-the-scenes communications between the White House and relevant parties. Shifting focus to Cambodia, Noah and Brendan parse through the Khmer Rouge's origins as an auxiliary, socialist-aligned force with the North Vietnamese (the basis for Nixon's carpet bombing), only to help launch a full-scale Civil War in the wake of the US-backed deposition of Sihanouk by South Vietnam in 1970, resulting in years of bloodshed (increased by ongoing US bombings) that saw the Khmer Rouge gain more and more territory and power, until the formerly-small-guerilla movement successfully sacked the capital city of Phnom Penh, launching five years of forced labor, full-scale genocide and the extermination of ethnic minorities, refugee crises, mass executions and more under the rule of Pol Pot. Continuing, James and Kulwin move into the breakdown of Cambodian society under the brutal regime of Pol Pot and expanding conflict as the Khmer Rouge turned against the North Vietnamese government that had supported them (in part due to the Khmer Rouge's budding relationship with the US and the West), resulting in said government launching a full-scale invasion of Cambodia, getting rid of Pol Pot and establishing a friendly regime, all to the condemnation of the West that had been peacefully watching Cambodians die for nearly a decade. After briefly expanding on the mythology tying the Khmer Rouge's rule to the greater Soviet movement and the obvious failures of said narrative when you look into who was actually supporting the regime, Emma, Brendan and Noah jump to the modern period, unpacking the symbiotic nature of a fully-capitalist Cold War between the US and China, and what that has meant for Cambodian development over the last decade, wrapping up the interview by running through the final figures on the mass deaths from US carpet bombing (100-150k), the US-backed Civil War (300-500k), and the following Cambodian Genocide (1.7m). Ross Barkan and Emma then dive right into the overwhelming cloud of corruption around NYC Mayor Eric Adams, including FOUR federal investigations ranging from domestic to foreign corruption, and the correlating complete incompetence of his governance, with Barkan comparing his administration to a Tammany Hall that didn't actually deliver anything to the people. After briefly expanding on the role an overwhelmingly unpopular New York Democratic Party is having on races up and down the ballot, Ross and Emma tackle the particulars of Adams' corrupt relationship with the NYPD and its deadly impact. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack North Carolina GOP Gubernatorial Nominee Mark Robinson's odd sermon on the ability to take and make life with one's genitalia, JD Vance's continuing commitment to racist conspiracy, and Ryan Grim's cathartic shutdown of Matt Walsh's absurd anti-Haitian bigotry. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with adrienne maree brown, writer, activist, and co-founder of the United States League of Young Voters, to discuss her recent book Loving Corrections. Then, she's joined by Jakob Johnston, writer and researcher at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), author of the book Aid State: Elite Panic, Disaster Capitalism, and the Battle to Control Haiti, to discuss the recent pattern of hate crimes against Haitian immigrants in the United States. First, Emma runs through updates on the swing-state race, the fight for IVF, anti-migrant fear-mongering, US foreign policy, Israel's lies, and environmental emergency, also parsing through some lingering impacts from the debate. adrienne maree brown then joins, diving right into the disappearance of the community alongside growing feelings of insecurity, isolation, and bigotry, tackling how this phenomenon is cultivated and stoked by the disappearance of public spaces. Expanding on this, maree brown walks through the precarious balance between rejecting mentalities of supremacy and dehumanization that divide us without cutting the line of humanity with the people who hold those views, before stepping back to tackle a few particular essays in ‘Loving Corrections,' which tackle the idea of countering the narratives of supremacy that have taken root in particular ideologies (patriarchy, Zionism) without atomizing or marginalizing the identities that have been corrupted (masculinity, Judaism, respectively). After expanding on the importance of understanding the historical and social context for building these bridges, adrienne and Emma bring the conversation to a close with the importance of understanding the personal context of interpersonal conflict. Jake Johnston then jumps right into summarizing the recent wave of anti-immigrant fear-mongering coming from the GOP and bolstered by the mainstream media, unpacking the deep history of the “savage” portrayal of Haitians from the state's outset as a product of the first truly successful slave revolt before stepping out to look at the material impact of the reemergence of this brand of fascist rhetoric, namely a wave of anti-migrant hate, violence, and threats. Taking a step back, Johnston and Emma expand on the long story of Haiti's economic exploitation at the hands of the US and the West, a relationship exacerbated coming out of the 2010 earthquake that wreaked havoc on the country's infrastructure and saw vulture capitalists (many state-backed) flock to the disaster to stake their claim, a development that has seen the Haitian government become even further disconnected from their population, elected by and accountable to donors, rather than voters. Wrapping up, Jake tackles the importance of using this moment of absurd anti-migrant hate to redirect the conversation toward the policies of exploitation and domination – and the lack of a politically-backed alternative – that create this insecurity in the first place. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch JD Vance triple-down on pushing absurd, conspiratorial migrant fear-mongering, Cody from Georgia unpacks Candace Owen's invocation of the Synagogue of Satan, and Emma gets something off her chest. Pat from Nebraska on talking politics with friends, Brett Weinstein accuses the Harris campaign of conspiring to inspire conspiracy, and Tulsi Gabbard goes all in on the theocratic fascism. Jack from Colorado reflects on the debate, and the combination of good politics and bad policy, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Neil J. Young, co-host of the Past Present podcast, to discuss his recent book Coming Out Republican: A History of the Gay Right. Then, she speaks with Hal Singer, economics professor at the University of Utah, to discuss some of Kamala Harris' recent economic policy proposals. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's expanding offensive in the West Bank, major polling bumps for Dems, the first Harris/Walz interview, Trump's Q invocation, Trump's would-be assassin, Biden's major victory over drug prices, SCOTUS' continuing attacks on student debt relief, Brazil vs. Elon Musk, Cornell's labor action, and corruption in journalism, before parsing through the overwhelming threat of every type of violence that Palestinians face in the West Bank. Neil J. Young then joins, diving right into the roots of the gay Republican movement in the Cold War-era Lavender Scare, an overwhelming attempt by US federal, state, and local governments to criminalize, surveil, and punish queer Americans, be they politicians, military, police, or just every-day citizens, leading up to a 1978 ballot initiative from the religious right in California to ban queer people from teaching in public schools that saw an overwhelming organizing effort from gay Republicans to shoot down the initiative and prove that they belong in the GOP, a belief that took root among white gay men in San Francisco, before taking off nationally. Moving forward, Young then looks to the major role played by California Governor and US President Ronald Reagan over the outset and evolution of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in pushing rhetoric and policy that sought to otherize and demonize the homosexual “lifestyle” as the root of the crisis, and helping to launch a period of severe backlash to the social progress of the 1960s, particularly among the right. After expanding on the role of the public school system, and specifically the targeting of public school teachers, in right-wing attempts to marginalize and exclude queer folks, Neil and Emma walk through some of the major parallels we see with the challenges facing queer Americans today, wrapping up with the importance of understanding the immense stakes of this moment within its historical context. Professor Hal Singer then jumps right into the story of the US fight against inflation over the last few years, tackling the roles of price gouging and a corrupt rental market in exacerbating this economic crisis, including an expansive conversation on RealPage's landlord price-fixing suit, and the absurd arguments that economists and elites used to obscure these root causes. Next, Professor Singer and Emma walk through the recent economic proposals from the Harris campaign that focus on these particular issues and what they mean within the context of the transition between Biden and her administrations, before briefly challenging the focus on anti-trust as a tool to prevent price gouging, and wrapping up the interview with an assessment of Biden major victory in drug price negotiations with the pharmaceutical industry, and how Harris can expand on and learn from that win. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch JD Vance and Tim Walz make clear the party divide on unions, Royce White insults the “cuck mentality” that won Trump his first campaign, and JD Vance's cousin, BD, gives a peak behind the ol' country curtain of JD's campaign. Kari from New York unpacks RFK's myriad problematic beliefs, Jamie from ME on Gen-Z and Biden, and Mike Huckabee on Trump's prescient assholery, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Daniel Denvir, host of The Dig podcast, housing justice organizer for Reclaim Rhode Island, and alternate uncommitted delegate from Rhode Island to the Democratic National Convention, to discuss his experience so far on the ground at the DNC. Then, she speaks with Susan Rinkunas, contributing writer at Jezebel, to discuss the recent developments in abortion legislation around the country ahead of the election, as well as how abortion is being handled at the DNC. First, Emma runs through updates on the DNC's rejection of a possible Palestinian speaker, Dems' decision to drop the death penalty abolition from their platform, RFK's candidacy, Day 3 of the DNC, Canada's freight rail labor news, Israel's domestic discontent, the continuing genocide in Gaza, and the second raid of the Tate brothers' compound in Romania, before parsing through Tim Walz' well-received speech at last night's DNC. Daniel Denvir then joins, walking through the Uncommitted Delegation's platform and their request made to the DNC to have practically any Palestinian speak at the convention, as well as touching on reactions to the unsurprising – yet still disheartening – decision to double down on the party's record of anti-Palestinian discrimination (and support for their extermination). He and Emma then step back to assess why their platform so focuses on pressuring Biden for immediate action (rather than Harris for theoretical promises) and why Biden's claimed “negotiations” for a ceasefire are hollow without an immediate arms embargo, before tackling the successful Uncommitted organizing effort to get Harris delegates on board, the importance of pushing this fight on every level of the political spectrum, from grassroots to Congress, and how those of us outside of Chicago can help. Susan Rinkunas and Emma then look to the fights to get abortion rights on the ballots across myriad US states, first tackling the Arkansas Supreme Court's decision to deny ballot access to an amendment over paperwork issues, the major role Montana's referendum can play in helping Democrats' electoral efforts, Arizona's ongoing schemes to defend their use of 1873's Comstock act, and Florida's attempt to undermine democracy. After expanding the SCOTUS' recent decision cutting down a challenge to contraceptive fights, as well as the role of Comstock in the threat of a national abortion ban, Rinkunas wraps up by discussing the important and prevalent role reproductive rights and care access are playing at the DNC. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton who reflects on an experience at a seminar with Jeremy Corbyn, before they dive deep into the incredibly disheartening commitment by the Democratic establishment to lie to the faces of the US public, the importance of the ongoing protests in Chicago, the hypocrisies of American Empire, and more. They also talk with Mike from the PNW about ongoing NALC contract negotiations and Miranda Mitchell parses through the devastating public health situation in Gaza and the growing risk of a mass polio outbreak. Russell Brand objects to Kamala Harris' performative enjoyment of Doritos, and Bill Maher talks to kids, while drunk, about porn, drugs, and tits, and it goes exactly how you'd think, plus, your calls and IMs! FUN HALF LINK HERE: https://www.youtube.com/live/ziKCC2qJYKs It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with blogger Ettingermentum of the "Ettingermentum Newsletter" on SubStack, to discuss Kamala Harris's campaign now that she's selected Tim Walz as her running mate. Then, she speaks with Jesselyn Cook, writer at NBCNews and HuffPost and 2025 Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, to discuss her recent book The Quiet Damage: QAnon and the Destruction of the American Family. First, Emma runs through updates on Harris' presidential candidacy and platform, the GOP's failing attacks on Tim Walz, Trump's legal woes, Israel's slaughter of Gaza, Cybertruck controversy, fascist and anti-fascist protests in the UK, and climate change, before watching Harris' disappointing response to pro-Palestine protesters interrupting her. Next, she is joined by Ettingermentum as they briefly admire Nancy Pelosi's recent politicking, before parsing through the concerning reports on the Biden team's internal dialogue over the past two years, including a complete commitment to poll-denialism and putting Biden on a pedestal. Next, they look at Harris' replacement candidacy, tackling the quality of her resumé compared to alternatives and what to make of her selection of Tim Walz as running mate, wrapping up with an assessment of the important distinctions between him and Shapiro, particularly when it comes to Israel. Jesselyn Cook then joins, walking Emma through her first introduction to covering the world of Q Anon at a 2020 rally, unpacking the surprising revelations she had about the people she found there, and the genuinely human experiences and unmet needs that led them to getting manipulated by this movement. Cook explores the stories of real people who've been hijacked by this movement, highlighting the social insecurities caused by genuine sociopolitical failures that made their indoctrination possible, and why it comes from a desire to manifest meaning rather than a failure of intellect, before wrapping up by exploring what it takes to rescue someone from this pipeline. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack harm reduction, admire JD Vance's ability to absolutely any and every speaking opportunity, and bury some hatchets with Evan from Texas. She speaks with David Freedlander, writer at New York Magazine, to discuss his recent piece on Truth Social, Trump's media company. Then, she speaks with Diana Buttu, Palestinian analyst and former legal advisor to the Palestine Liberation Organization, to discuss the recent unrest in Israel after Israeli soldiers were detained for allegedly assaulting Palestinian prisoners. First, Emma runs through updates on Trump's recent implosion in front of the National Association of Black Journalists Convention, the UAW's endorsement of Harris, Arizona primary results, Russian relations, the aftermath of Israel's recent escalations, dropping border arrests, Sudan, the Child Tax Credit, and federal protections for trans students, before watching the opening moments of Trump's complete meltdown in the face of media pushback. David Freedlander then joins, diving right into an outline of the massive fraud machine that is Donald Trump's Truth Social, a business considered generally worthless with massive losses alongside a market capitalization of $6 billion, functioning more as a financial proxy for Trump's political power than an actual valuation. Stepping back, Freedlander walks through Trump's background in wanting to push a social media company, and the role of his apprentice connections in making that a possibility after his first presidential term, before wrapping up with the danger this massive market capitalization can pose when it comes to Trump's political power, and why it continues to work. Diana Buttu and Emma then step right into the continuing horrors unfolding in Israel's ethnic cleansing of Palestine, parsing through the evolving story on the public and political backlash to Israel's attempt to detain and question 9 soldiers alleged of gang-raping captives, and looking at the massive scale of Israel's torture camp where this took place. Next, Buttu walks through the expansive reports on Israel's torture regime against Palestinians, with a particular focus on its motive of pure revenge and dehumanization, before briefly touching on the Israeli government/military's tacit acceptance of the fascist violence erupting against them. Wrapping up, Diana and Emma tackle Israel's recent attempts to escalate broader regional conflicts, and Bibi's lifeline of war and destruction. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch Trump dance around his regret over the JD Vance pick, talk with Maje from Washington about the GOP's major fumbling of the Kamala Harris discourse, and Karie from NY explores the ahistorical approach of the right. Bill Maher hosts Hailey Welch (of Hawk Tuah origins) and it's just as uncomfortable as it sounds, Comrade Nancy Pelosi has an endearing moment with Matt Binder, and Donald Trump gets mad at his base for not voting enough. Peter Thiel has a take on religion, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Zachary Foster, historian of Palestine and proprietor of the website Palestine Nexus, to discuss Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's address to a joint session of Congress yesterday. First, Emma runs through updates on Biden's passing of the torch, the mass crackdown on pro-Palestine protesters in DC yesterday, Netanyahu's joint congressional address, falling inflation rates, labor action, Trump's assassin, Trump's bigotry, the destruction in the wake of southeast Asia's Super Typhoon, and early polling on Harris, before giving a quick cheat sheet for Harris' VP picks, and the insane “family-first” policy that JD Vance and his tech bro funders have backed in the past. Zachary Foster then joins, as he and Emma jump right into the complete shame of yesterday's joint Congressional address by Netanyahu, before touching on some of the biggest updates on Israel's continuing genocide of Gaza from the last few weeks as it has been pushed to the side in the news cycle. After an expansive conversation on Netanyahu's commitment to this offensive, and the devastating impact it is having on the country's economy and workforce, Foster explores the ongoing attempt to create a unity government between Fatah and Hamas. Zachary also gives a background on Israel's manufactured conflict with Iran, wrapping up the interview by parsing through the highlights (or lowlights, really) from Netanyahu's Congressional address, and his love for manipulating real issues for the Zionist cause. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder, as they parse through the different stances on Israel between Obama, Biden, and Harris, unpack the whiplash in the shift from Biden's dropout to Netanyahu's joint congressional address and Harris' denouncement of protesters, and parse through the right wing's struggle to stay away from weird and obviously-misogynistic critiques of Kamala Harris. They also expand on Netanyahu's visit to Congress and photo op with Biden, and watch Peter Thiel show why he's better as a shadowy oligarch (less public speaking), plus, your IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Dr. Genevieve Guenther, founding director of the organization End Climate Silence, affiliate faculty at the Tishman Environment & Design Center at the New School, to discuss her recent book The Language of Climate Politics: Fossil-Fuel Propaganda and How to Fight It. Then, she speaks with blogger Ettingermentum of the "Ettingermentum Newsletter" on SubStack, to discuss what comes next for Biden, the Democratic Party, and the presidential ticket. First, Emma runs through updates on the US economy, Biden's candidacy, Israel's continuing devastation of Gaza (amid supposed ceasefire talks), US foreign military aid, SCOTUS corruption, Project 2025, the anti-abortion GOP, and Texas' environmental disaster, before diving deeper into developing reports of Israel's (and Benjamin Netanyahu's) active and months-long sabotage of supposed peace negotiations between Israel and Hamas. Dr. Genevieve Guenther then joins, first tackling the development of a new type of climate denial – one that embraces climate change as a concept, but rejects any urgency or action to restructure our economies as alarmist and unrealistic – and touching on the major role financiers play in keeping the fossil fuel industry alive. Diving deeper into the lies of this form of climate denial, Dr. Guether walks Emma through some highlights of this failing attitude, with supposed technological advancements like bioenergy and carbon capture further contributing to the destruction of our atmosphere. Wrapping up, Genevieve and Emma explore the demobilizing impact of this mainstream climate denial, an issue exacerbated by neoliberalism's hollowing out of the institutions and structures of political advocacy and activism, and what we can do to activate around this issue. Ettingermentum joins, taking a moment to contextualize his thinking on the electoral popularity of Biden and both the Democratic and Republican parties writ large, allowing him to more accurately predict the results of the 2022 elections than the typical economic fundamentals model. He and Emma then dive into the trenches of the ongoing fiasco of Biden's candidacy, the questions of its viability and whether or not it will even continue, what to make of the various (and generally absurd) arguments against replacing him, and the theoretical candidacy of Kamala Harris, before wrapping up with a greater assessment of polling and how to understand it. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they unpack the developing drama around Biden's candidacy, including George Clooney's recent OpEd (and the Biden team's telling response), the absurd and tokenizing arguments behind keeping him in the race, and the argument behind a Harris candidacy (ft. Rep. Adam Smith). They also talk with Marcos from Baytown and Aaron from Houston about the harrowing conditions of Texas' heatwave power outage and the utter failure of the Texas conservative establishment, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with freelance writer and author Arthur Goldwag to discuss his recent book The Politics of Fear: The Peculiar Persistence of American Paranoia. Then, she's joined by Manpreet Kaur Kalra, development economics & legal scholar with an emphasis on business and human rights, to discuss her recent piece in In These Times entitled "The Landmark Ruling Against Chiquita Exposes the Failure of Voluntary “Corporate Social Responsibility”, co-authored with Anna Canning. First, Emma responds to the military coup attempt in Bolivia that was beaten back by President Arce, organized labor, and the Bolivian people in the nation's capital, La Paz. Afterwards, Emma speaks with Arthur, and they trace the history of paranoia in American politics, and how that history intersects with the rise in anti-Semitism, conspiracy theories, and hatred on the right today. Arthur traces back the racial, ethnic, and religious animus on the right even further back then contemporary American racism and anti-Semitism, discussing the history of anti-Masonic tropes in American history, which also dovetailed with another great American prejudice: hatred towards Catholics and Catholicism, which dissipated mostly only after the election of John F. Kennedy in 1960. Arthur reckons with a question from an MR IM'er as to whether there is a capacity for this conspiratorial, hate-filled energy to be translated and minimized, potentially into a outlet that isn't characterized by those things, into something more pro-social. He's not convinced. Then, Emma is joined by Manpreet to discuss her reporting on the ruling against Chiquita, the banana company that funded paramilitary groups in Colombia. Manpreet discusses the particulars of the lawsuit, the history of paramilitary groups in Colombia during its pitched, extended Civil War, how companies would gain footholds with those groups, and what this ruling means for corporate governance and its social responsibility. And in the Fun Half, Emma and the MR Crew are joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton, as they discuss yet another day's worth of expectation setting by Congressional Republicans ahead of tonight's Biden-Trump debate. This time, Tennessee Rep. Andy Ogles touts his "No Juicing Joe" legislation in the sake of transparency (i.e. forcing President Biden to admit whether he's taken mind altering stimulants while in office). They then discuss Sen. John Fetterman's pow wow in Israel with Netanyahu, a bipartisan vote to amend an appropriations bill to bar departments from citing the Gaza Health Ministry and Rep. Rashida Tlaib's excoriating speech on the House floor in response, and a crazy story out of West Virginia about a couple now in court for allegedly engaging in human trafficking and what could amount to modern slavery inflicted upon adopted black children. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Joanna Wuest, assistant professor of politics at Mount Holyoke College and author of the book Born This Way: Science, Citizenship, and Inequality in the American LGBTQ+ Movement, to discuss her recent piece in Jacobin entitled "The Best Way to Secure LGBTQ Rights: Unions." Then, she speaks with David Broder, historian and Europe editor at Jacobin, author of Mussolini's Grandchildren: Fascism in Contemporary Italy, to discuss the recent EU elections, and the upcoming elections in the UK and France. First, Emma runs through updates on stalling ceasefire talks, Israel's continuing aggression in Gaza and elsewhere, some surprisingly solid SCOTUS decisions, Congressional action, RFK's floundering candidacy, serious global warming, growing union support in the US, and Louisiana's Ten Commandments-Commandment for school classrooms, also parsing through the recent UNHRC report on the crimes of war, crimes against humanity, and crimes of extermination, gender and sexual-based violence, and use of starvation and collective punishment. Professor Joanna Wuest then joins, diving right into the inspiring queer advocacy work coming from the new generation of union leaders, before stepping back to tackle the (multi-decades) long standing relationship between labor and queer rights, with unions providing much stronger protections from discrimination and important economic security where the US government failed to do so. After touching on the deep history of the relationship between anti-LGBTQ scapegoating of educators, and where Ron DeSantis' “Don't Say Gay” policy stands within that context, Professor Wuest and Emma wrap up with the important role queer folks have played in the major Starbucks unionization push over the last few years. David Broder then walks Emma through what the EU Parliament actually is and does (not much), and contextualizes the broader results of the recent round of elections, before parsing through the more worrying results out of France and Germany, which saw strong gains from the far-right RN (of Marine Le Pen) and AfD. Expanding on the France of it all, Broder tackles French PM Macron's absurd decision to respond to the right-wing gains by calling a snap national election, what it tells us about liberals' continued preference of the far-right over the progressive left, and what it could mean for the future of Le Pen's party, using Italy's Giorgia Meloni as a parallel to Le Pen's seeming liberal-appeasing-pivot to more conventional, pro-establishment politics. After discussing the more radical brand of fascism coming out of Germany's AfD, Emma and Broder wrap up with a brief assessment of the state of the left in Europe, and the ongoing failure of the retreat to the center (as seen in the UK). And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they admire some timely crowd work, watch Tim Pool complaint about Nick Fuentes tainting white nationalism with his anti-Israel views, and listen to Glenn Greenwald and Tucker Carlson pretend to be the first people ever to point out the absurdity of anti-BDS laws. Kerry from New York on Tim Pool, Miguel from Philly on Joe Biden, and the Burgumentum continues! Lilith from Washington on the role of Zionism in a two-state solution, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Today she speaks with Dr. Eviane Leidig, postdoctoral fellow at the Tilburg University, to discuss her recent book The Women of the Far Right: Social Media Influencers and Online Radicalization. Then, she speaks with Kate Wagner, architecture critic at The Nation, to discuss her recent piece entitled "Luxury Brands Are Buying Our Cities." First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's seizure and closing of the Egypt-Gaza border, continuing backlash to Biden's support for Israel, Trump's legal woes and cabinet promises, NATO-Russia tensions, Alito's corruption, Boeing safety problems, Hong Kong's crackdown on pro-Democracy activists, elections in South Africa and Mexico, and India's major heatwave, before diving deeper into the recent resignations from the Biden Administration, and touching on Trump rallying the cronies as his Hush Money trial reaches the jury deliberation phase. Dr. Eviane Leidig then joins, parsing through what makes the Alt-Right distinct from the generically xenophobic and white supremacist Republican Party, how they used the rise of Internet forums and social media to recruit the chronically online alienated youth, and the major roles played by Gamergate and January 6th in their rise and fall, respectively. Next, Dr. Leidig looks to the ecosystem of the women of the Alt-Right, and how their strategic presentation allows their fascist propaganda to largely float under the radar, tackling the common career trajectory that found many women commentators on the Alt-Right shifting to lifestyle-influencing in the wake of the January 6th collapse of the Alt-Right and the rise of COVID, presenting trad-wife-eque content for their largely-male audience and working alongside the Christian and Manosphere influencers under the banner of anti-feminism. After expanding on the central role anti-feminism plays in the Alt-Right's current trajectory, Dr. Leidig wraps up by touching on the particulars of the Alt-Right's recruitment of young women and the major role interpersonal intervention plays in escaping the pipeline. Kate Wagner then walks Emma through this ongoing problem of the corporate “Disney-fication” of our cities, with an increasing trend of corporations buying up entire neighborhoods for glorified (and extremely exclusive) publicity stunts. Tackling the examples of Bilbao's Guggenheim and the Fondation Louis Vuitton, Wager explores how these monstrosities exploit loopholes to essentially get the public to pay for the enclosure of their commons, before she and Emma wrap up with the central role that Private Equity and commercial real estate have played in promoting this process. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Keister from Florida about the value of progressive infighting, watch Dave Rubin promote Hungary's wildly homophobic regime, and listen to Rep. Moskowitz explain why justice for war crimes is a fantasy. They also cover the continuing arrests by Israeli police over social media engagement, Fiora from Minnesota on the importance of independent coverage of Palestine, and discuss electoral strategy come November, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Daniel J. Galvin, professor of political science at Northwestern University, to discuss his recent book Alt-Labor and the New Politics of Workers' Rights. Then, she's joined by Richard Beck, senior writer at n+1 Magazine, to discuss his recent piece in the New Left Review entitled "Bidenism Abroad." First, Emma runs through updates on Nikki Haley's endorsement of Donald Trump, Israel's continued victimization in the face of committing genocide, US support for Israel, Senate politics, Justice Alito, Anti-trust action, UK elections, and more, before parsing through Fox News' coverage of the FBI's capacity to USE DEADLY FORCE AGAINST DONALD TRUMP, per typical procedure. Professor Daniel Galvin then joins, first contextualizing what these “alternative labor” organizations are, with networks like worker centers, community organizations, and regional alliances providing particularly vulnerable workers in the vast, unionized sectors of the US economy an avenue for workplace and labor justice, be it wage theft, discrimination, sexual harassment, or labor conditions, though generally focusing on rectifying wrongs that have already occurred. Expanding on this, Professor Galvin explores how these organizations have begun shifting to a more proactive approach, advocating for state and local employment and labor policy to chip away at the severe power imbalance in the US economy, finding success in bluer districts and states, while meeting much more institutional (and financial) opposition elsewhere. After walking through the slow and steady undermining of FDR's New Deal system of labor protections after the Second World War, and the shift away from collective bargaining to minimal employment protections, Galvin wraps up by assessing the devastating impact employer exploitation like wage theft actually has on the US economy, resulting in billions taken from the lowest-wage workers. Richard Beck and Emma then reflect on Biden's Foreign Policy platform on the campaign trail, centering a “foreign policy for the middle class” and a narrative of “Democracies versus Autocracies,” which particularly worked with his early policies of support for Ukraine and withdrawal from Afghanistan, respectively, and look to the main individuals – Anthony Blinken and Jake Sullivan – responsible for shaping this platform. After expanding on the evolution of Biden's foreign policy during his first few years in office, Richard and Emma begin to explore how October 7th (and Israel's following ethnic cleansing of Gaza) completely upended these commitments, laying bare the failures of the autocracy-democracy binary, and reinserting the US into an expensive quagmire in the Middle East, all while relying on the policies bequeathed unto him by Donald Trump's far-right administration. Next, Beck looks to the parallels in Biden's approach to China, continuing the economic warfare established under Trump with major EV tariffs and an ongoing attempt at a TikTok Ban, before exploring the increasingly precarious status of US hegemony over the last few decades, and wrapping up by assessing the future of Biden's inactive and defensive leadership as the 2024 election draws near. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they highlight a new EmMajority Report intro song, Sam's evolution into a cruiser (as in… the ships), and talk with Sky from Florida about the ideologies behind hating student debt-forgiveness. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Regina Kunzel, professor of history and women's, gender, and sexuality studies at Yale University, to discuss her recent book In the Shadow of Diagnosis: Psychiatric Power and Queer Life. Then, she speaks with Beshara Doumani, professor of Palestinian studies at Brown University, to discuss the 76th anniversary of the Nakba. First, Emma runs through updates on South Africa's ICJ appeal to stop Israel's Rafah invasion, growing public dissent from Biden allies to his support of Israel's genocide, the US' detainment of an anti-zionist Israeli academic, Bob Menendez's genius legal tactic, the assassination attempt on Slovakia's Prime Minister, Trump's legal woes, Argentinian homophobic hate crimes, and Louisiana gerrymandering, before watching CNN try to save face on their coverage of the violence against student protesters. Professor Regina Kunzel then dives right into the history of the psychiatric industry, from its roots as a custodial care industry (asylums, etc) in the 19th Century, through its slow battle for professional legitimacy over the first half of the 1900s, exploring how this push for legitimacy saw the industry lay claim to a wide range of “problems in living” such as anxiety, depression, and (importantly) homosexuality and gender nonconformity. Expanding on this, Professor Kunzel tackles the presentation of queerness as a “treatable” mental disorder, one that would eventually be codified as a personality disorder (alongside pedophilia and sadism) with the introduction of the DSM in 1952, before stepping back to look at the role World War II, and more specifically the emphasis on mental health screenings, had in giving state-backed legitimacy to the psychiatric industry writ large, and in its particular pathologization of queer identity. After looking at the central role de-pathologizing homosexuality played in the gay rights movement of the 1970s, and the side-effect of gender “deviance” taking a back seat to homosexuality, Professor Kunzel wraps up with the re-emergence of the medical and psychiatric attack on queer identity with the mainstreaming of transphobic politics over the last decade. Professor Beshara Doumani then joins, walking through the 76 years of Palestinian oppression and ethnic cleansing since the 1948 Nakba, with the original event seeing the expulsion of over 80% of Palestinians from their homes, the end of the Palestinian state (and Palestinian society), and the creation of the State of Israel in the vacuum left by British colonial rule. Continuing the conversation, Professor Doumani contextualizes the central role the Nakba plays in Palestinian trauma and oppression to this day, exacerbated and brought to the fore with the following “earthquakes” of the 1967 Six-Day War, which saw hundreds of thousands more Palestinians ethnically cleansed, and the Oslo Accords complete isolation of Palestinians between the river and the sea. After diving deeper into the particular failure of the 2-state “solution,” Professor Doumani walks Emma through the specific repression he's faced as a Palestinian academic, and the tremendous increase it has seen in the wake of October 7th. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they watch British bigot Mike Graham boot Arab-Israeli Jew Avi Shlaim from his program for being honest about Israeli apartheid. Alec from Western New York explores the evolution of his perspective on anti-zionism, Mike in Denver on the second coming of meme-stock, and Bumble creator discusses the alienating future of AI-infused dating. It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Rachel Nolan, historian of Latin America at Boston University's Pardee School of Global Studies, to discuss her recent book Until I Find You: Disappeared Children and Coercive Adoptions in Guatemala. Then, she speaks with Raga Makawi, editor at African Arguments, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Sudan. First, Emma discusses President Biden's recent CNN interview with Erin Burnett, where he makes the claim that he'd withhold aid to Israel if a full-scale invasion into Rafah occurs. This led to some predictably normal responses from Prime Minister Netanyahu reposting a video of himself speaking about Israel acting alone if it needs to, and National Security Minister Ben-Gvir tweeting out that Hamas loves Biden. Rachel Nolan then joins the program to discuss her book on the crisis of the disappeared children in Guatemala, and how little media coverage and understanding is attached to this subject. All of this in the backdrop of a severe and violent sectarian conflict within the country, which led to the conditions from which disappearances and the for-profit adoption boom out of Central and South America began to increase and expand. Rachel dives into the number of organizations that have participated in the adoption racket out of Guatemala, the erasure of birth parents stories when it comes to understanding the "adoption triad" (birth parents, adoptee, & adopted parents), the idea of the "white savior" complex and how that intersects with these types of adoptions/dismissals of indigenous communities both domestically in the U.S. and abroad, as well as how, if at all, Trump's family separation policies impacted this industry. Raga Makawi then joins the program to provide some additional context to the ongoing conflict in Sudan, which has now surpassed a year of fighting. Raga outlines the central players, including the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the Sudanese government and military, and how both sides staked their positions in the conflict not only over the past year, but stemming back to the 2018 revolution as well as the 2004 conflict in Darfur. Raga also emphasizes the serious famine concerns in the area as a result of this conflict, who some other external players are geopolitically (Iran, as an example), how economic extraction and plunder from outside forces factor into the conflict itself, and what Western audiences don't understand about the conflict due to lack of media coverage/literacy on the issues germane to the situation. And in the Fun Half, Emma, Matt Binder, Brandon Sutton, & the entire MR Crew react to Likud Knesset member Tali Gottlieb melting down over Biden's pledge to not provide aid to Israel if their forces invade Rafah, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene taking on the "uniparty" by filing the motion to vacate against Speaker Johnson, "social entrepreneur" Chris Pan's cringeworthy BitCoin-themed commencement address/magic show at Ohio State University, Elise Stefanik attempting another witchhunt in a congressional subcommittee hearing, this time directed at the Chancellor of New York City Public Schools, and the inevitable Vivek Ramaswamy-Ann Coulter meeting of the minds on Vivek's "TRUTH" podcast, where...Ann Coulter tells him she couldn't vote for him for President because he's Indian (Vivek appreciated the candor!). It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with César Cuauhtémoc García Hernández, Chair in Civil Rights and Civil Liberties at Ohio State University, to discuss his recent book Welcome the Wretched: In Defense of the “Criminal Alien”. Then, she speaks with Schuyler Mitchell, writer and fact checker based in Brooklyn, to discuss her recent piece in The Baffler entitled "Pinkwashing the Timeline". First, Emma runs through updates on the violent crackdown by police (and Zionist mobs) on UCLA's anti-war encampment, Blinken's visit to Israel ahead of a likely invasion of Rafah, Israeli settler attacks on Palestinian aid, the House's bogus antisemitism bill, South Dakota abortion rights, Trump's response to encampment raids, the death of a SECOND Boeing whistleblower, Amazon labor violations, and devastating floods in Kenya, before parsing through the rage-inducing coverage of the violent attacks on anti-war peaceful demonstrations on college campuses, with some help from the poorly-executed propaganda of the NYPD. César García Hernández then joins, diving right into the evolution of anti-immigrant rhetoric in the US, with the Reagan administration's campaign for the War on Drugs recentering the narrative around crime, a position that mainstream Democrats like Bill Clinton and then-Senator Joe Biden would quickly assimilate to. Expanding on this, Hernández looks to the Obama Administration's continuation of this narrative, with a regime of deportation framed around ideas like “Felons not Families” as he and Emma tackle the Democrats' constant race to the right on immigration in a supposed (but never successful) pitch to GOP voters. After parsing through the central role that migrant labor plays in this political battle, they step back to assess the era of anti-immigrant rhetoric that came before the War on Drugs, with serious penalties for illegal entry and reentry stemming from the racist immigration laws on the books from the start of the 20th Century. Schuyler Mitchell then walks Emma through the concept of “pinkwashing,” or the dressing up of violent ideology in socially accepted liberal values, looking at Israel's insistence on presenting itself as a progressive haven – in juxtaposition to their narrative of the “savage” Palestinians. Mitchell and Emma then look at a little classic Israeli liberal TV as they parse through the obvious homophobia and transphobia of Eretz Nehederet's parody of Columbia students as a pitch-perfect example of Israel's hypocrisy, before wrapping up with the role pinkwashing plays in Israel's simultaneous self-victimization and self-valorization. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they discuss the typical “savages” arguments being made against Gazans, the NYPD's propaganda launch in the wake of their violent raid on Columbia students, and watch JD Vance fall for the most obvious bait from Kaitlan Collins. Krystal Ball unpacks her cohost's obvious fascism, Pete Cresswell reflects on the tradition of campus occupations, and America from México discusses transphobia on the left. Josh from Virginia breaks down the crackdown on UNC's anti-war protests, the MR Team breaks down the outrageous “outside agitators” narrative with some help from the GOP's big guns, and Kristi Noam struggles to come back from boasting about the murder of a 14-month-old dog, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Max Felker-Kantor, associate professor of history at Ball State University, to discuss his recent book DARE to Say No: Policing and the War on Drugs in Schools. Then, she speaks with journalist Erin Reed, author of the Erin In The Morning newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the recent gender identity review by the National Health Services (NHS) in the United Kingdom. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's ongoing assault on Rafah, ongoing institutional support for Israel's genocide among the US government and major corporations, US sanctions against Iran, the White House's climate stance, Boeing hearings, Disneyland unionization, Biden's polling numbers, Mike Johnson's failing speakership, and the Senate's rejection of the Mayorkas impeachment sham, before parsing a little deeper through the recent report on the horrendous abuse and torture of Palestinian hostages in Israel and the ongoing showdown between Columbia University's anti-zionist student body, and hyper-zionist institutional leadership. Professor Max Felker-Kantor then joins, diving right into the evolution of DARE's prevalence in US schools and society, and how it got its start with the LAPD. First, Professor Felker-Kantor walks Emma through the precursor to DARE, with LA Chief of Police Darrel Gates' strategy throughout the 1970s to send undercover officers into schools to bust drug dealers – a project that had been failing as the War on Drugs kicked into full swing by the end of the decade – and his subsequent attempt to shift from cracking down on the supply end of the War on Drugs, to cracking down on the demand. Expanding on this, Felker-Kantor explores the creation of DARE as a joint venture between the LAPD and local schools, with officers essentially becoming ingrained the education environment and classrooms, even going as far as to pitch themselves as friends and mentors to the students, and quickly taking off across the US over the 1980s, before walking through the slow collapse of the program as more and more evidence came out about the strategy's failure in preventing drug addiction or exposure. Wrapping up, Max walks Emma through the extensive funding network of the DARE program, beginning with internal LAPD funding before quickly expanding to state and federal grants over the 1980s and start of the ‘90s, and why its particular ability to cling to its non-profit status has allowed it to remain, in some capacity, as a global organization today. Erin Reed and Emma then jump right into the background for the UK's recent Cass Report on transgender care, stepping back to briefly cover the rise of transphobic activism in the UK at the end of the 2010s, and the major policy impacts it had despite fringe following, including the NHS-sponsored ‘independent' and ‘unbiased' review by Hillary Cass. After giving some background on the evidently not-so-unbiased Cass herself, Reed parses through the clear failure of the report itself to live up to these supposed standards, actively excluding both trans voices and experts on trans care from the report, relying on outdated and fraudulent statistics (compiled by notorious homophobes nonetheless), and repeatedly requiring absurdly high standards for trans care – standards not met by the vast majority of both adult and pediatric care – while rarely substantiating any of the claims about the supposed dangers. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they talk with Colin from Missouri about sports team owners extorting taxpayers, address the absurdity of “woke” segregation, and watch Professor Ruha Benjamin absolutely nail her acceptance speech for a Spelman College honorary degree by calling out institutional support for genocide and white supremacy. They also dive into the ongoing suppression of student activist voices on college campuses right now, with a particular focus on Columbia University's ongoing campus activism and the administrative backlash, before talking with Genevieve from Tucson about Operation Olive Branch's work helping Palestinians in Gaza. After touching on the mass manufacturing errors facing Tesla's Cybertrucks, they talk with Erin from Atlanta about Cobb County State candidate Gabriel Sanchez, and watch Matt Walsh pretend like nobody cares about women's sports, after months of obsessing about women's sports, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Arvin Alaigh, writer & political activist from New Jersey, currently a Ph.D student at the University of Cambridge, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "Abolishing the “Ballot Line” Will Reshape Progressive Politics." Then, she speaks with Mya Frazier, journalist based in Columbus, Ohio, to discuss her recent piece in Harper's entitled “The Eviction Experts.” First, Emma runs through updates on +972's recent report on Israel's use of AI technology to bomb the families of Palestinian targets, Biden's supposed “anger” over Israel's slaughter of World Central Kitchen workers, Israeli elections, Donald Trump's legal woes, Ukraine's war efforts, labor action in Alabama and Chicago, fascism in Texas and Alabama, and emissions reporting, before watching Richard Haass' call for sanctions against Israel. Arvin Alaigh then joins, first walking through what New Jersey's “ballot line” voting entailed, and how it drastically reduces the chances of outsider and non-county-endorsed candidates in state primaries. Stepping back, Alaigh walks Emma through the corrupt politics that the ballot line policy has enabled, with two major culprits, Governor Phil Murphy and Senator Bob Menendez, also inspiring the most recent scandal, with Gov. Murphy using his power to push his wife onto the preferred ballot spot to replace recently-indicted Sen. Menendez's seat, seeing opposition Andy Kim file suit with no pushback from even Murphy's allies. Wrapping up, Arvin tackles the current state of the suit, and the ongoing injunction against New Jersey's ballot line policy. Mya Frazier then brings Emma through a brief history of her reporting on eviction and tenant-landlord power dynamics, and how reporting on the wave of evictions in the wake of the end of the COVID-19 eviction moratorium brought her to a corporate landlord conference of the Columbus Apartment Association. Expanding on this, Frazier walks through the major role that tech companies and startups played at the conference, advertising their ability to automate and streamline much of the landlord process, and how the automation trend plays with the increasing private consolidation of housing to severely undermines the power of tenants, bringing mass and constant eviction crisis to places like Columbus (Ohio). Next, Frazier parses through the severe necessity (and near impossibility) of federal housing regulation for tenants' rights, before wrapping up with a who's who of the consolidation of the housing market. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they discuss the heartwarming work of the World Central Kitchen and the White House's heartless insistence that Israel has yet to break international law. Jack from Colorado calls in to discuss the ongoing shift of right-wing content creators to manosphere content, which transitions perfectly into a Charlie Kirk clip, and Kenny from Berkeley expands on the growing movement of student organizing. They also discuss Israel's targeting of Iran amid US-Iranian negotiations, watch Chaya Raichik struggle to define wokeness in 2024, and talk with Ross from New York about depatriated and deported veterans, and the organizing efforts of Black Deported Veterans of America, plus, your calls and IMs! It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with John Washington, staff writer at Arizona Luminaria and contributor for The Intercept, to discuss his recent book The Case For Open Borders. Then, she's joined by Christoph N. Vogel, research director of the Insecure Livelihoods Project at Ghent University and author of the book Conflict Minerals, Inc.: War, Profit and White Saviourism in Eastern Congo, to discuss recent developments in the conflict involving the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Rwanda. First, Emma runs through updates on the US recent tiptoe toward calling for a ceasefire, Israel's ongoing siege on Gaza, the major wins for the right in the upcoming government funding bill, Bernie and AOC's new Green New Deal for housing, Trump's financial woes, Julian Assange, the GOP's Biden inquiry, the DOJ v. Apple, Bolsonaro's falsified documents, and AMLO's response to Texas, before parsing a little deeper through the makeup of Congress' recent funding bill. John Washington then joins, parsing through the Democrats' recent complete capitulation to Donald Trump's far-right border militancy agenda, the common thread of this tactic by Democrats, and the absurdity of their rhetorical posturing alongside policy acquiescence, with a clear parallel in the politics of Mexico's AMLO. Expanding on this, Washington and Emma tackle the political class' commitment to the status quo on immigration, despite the relative recency (and ineffectiveness) of the shift toward closed, militarized borders, and how an argument for more humane and responsive immigration policy is still grounded in modern-day examples and is much more aligned with the rhetoric that much of the “progressive” west employs. John then dives into the economics of border militancy, with the increased precarity for migrants pushing them into more and more exploitative conditions and driving down wage and condition standards for citizens as well, with the globalization of exploitation alongside the restriction of the movement of people becoming cemented with the Free Trade Agreements of the neoliberal era. Wrapping up, Washington and Emma walk through the brutal ineffectiveness of border militancy, and what alternative visions to immigration could look like. Christoph Vogel then dives into the major problems with Western coverage of conflict in the Congo, largely employing a depoliticized, resource– and narrative-driven form of storytelling about issues with deeply political roots. After briefly touching on the role of Mobutu Sese Seko in Congolese relations to the West, Vogel walks through the three major periods of conflict in the recent history of the DRC, beginning with the rule and eventual overthrow of Mobutu in the ‘90s, the return of the DRC name under Laurent and then Joseph Kabila in the early 2000s (including the first democratic elections in 2006) during the Second Congo War, and finally the ongoing period of unstable and fracturing political and security environment, with countless militia and belligerent groups revolting and driving record displacement in the country. Expanding on the ongoing period of crisis, Vogel walks through the constant speculation and polemics around the data of the displacement and devastation by the main parties involved, and the relatively minor role resource extraction, particularly mining, has played in generating and maintaining these conflicts. Lastly, Chris Albright joins to discuss the devastating impact of last year's environmental disaster in East Palestine, walking through the major impacts on the health of him and his community, and the lackluster response from Joe Biden and Ohio representatives, also touching on their ongoing attempt to hold the President and representatives accountable, and what those of us outside of East Palestine can do to support their cause. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they watch Karine Jean-Pierre's callous response to a question about whether Biden will reach out to the Arab-American community, go full Freudo-Marxist on the right's insane reaction to Kristen Stewart's recent Rolling Stone cover, and talk with Spencer from Minnesota about the shows coverage of tort law and Johnson and Johnson's crimes. They also parse through the abuse and exploitation of reality stars, with some help from Love is Blind's Nick Thompson, plus, your calls and IMs! FUN HALF LINK HERE: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pu64-OuHvpI&ab_channel=TheMajorityReportw%2FSamSeder It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma is BACK from vacation! She speaks with Samantha J. Simon, Assistant Professor in the School of Sociology and School of Government and Public Policy at the University of Arizona, to discuss her recent book Before The Badge: How Academy Training Shapes Police Violence. Then, she speaks with Ed Zitron, writer of the Where's Your Ed At newsletter on SubStack, to discuss the state of the Internet and digital media. First, Emma runs through updates on the IDF striking a UN aid distribution center, Israel's continuing bloodlust, Biden and Schumer on Israel, the U.S TikTok ban, the FBI's Biden informant, primary elections, the sale of US Steel, Bernie's 32-hour work week, the death of Nex Benedict, Florida's settlement over their homophobic education policy, and mass displacement in the Eastern Congo, before parsing through the Biden Administration's role in pushing forward the new TikTok ban legislation, and the admitted role October 7th played in garnering bipartisan agreement. Professor Samantha Simon then joins, diving right into her ethnographic work exploring the role of police training as a socializing and discriminating force, first tackling the “Bad Apples” myth, and the organizational focus on instilling in their officers a specific worldview that emphasizes threats, danger, and the use of violence. After walking through the particular examples she saw in her research, and how the mentality of police works to recontextualize the dangers they face, she and Emma parse through how training works to weed out officers that resemble the mold of a victim or perpetrator, rather than a “hero.” Wrapping up, Samantha and Emma explore the particularly adversarial role police departments have with media and activists, and the general suspicion they have of “out” groups. Ed Zitron and Emma then dive into the devolution of Social Media under Big Tech's unsustainable philosophy of endless growth, and the self-reinforcing loop of algorithms shaping the very content that is pumped into them by creators, also looking to the topic of generative AI, and the similar problem that is presented there by the curation of data and media by dubious standards pushed by capitalists and their algorithms. After briefly touching on Elon Musk's ongoing attempt to profit off of his destruction of Twitter and the evolution of the “Hapsburg AI,” Zitron wraps up by walking through his take on Congress' TikTok bill, sponsored by an out-of-touch gerontocracy and greedy capitalists, and why the Apple Vision Pro is a perfect example of the rot economy. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Matt Binder and Brandon Sutton as they discuss the unsurprising revelations about Aaron Rodgers in the wake of his naming as a potential VP pick for RFK, Jamie from Maine discusses growing pro-Palestine culture in the area, and the three hosts dive into recent statements from the Israeli government supporting the murder of a 12 year old Palestinian in East Jerusalem over playing with fireworks. Jalen from Canton expands on the problem with the TikTok question, a generative AI executive gets squeamish over training data, and Elon Musk cancels Dom Lemon's show over unfair questioning of Musk and Lemon's connections to his Jewish former employer. Tim Pool analyzes exactly why he's so sad, inside and out, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday (of a whole week of EmMajority Reports!)! She speaks with Mark Joseph Stern, senior writer at Slate, to discuss the recent developments of the Supreme Court term. Then, she speaks with Michael Klare, professor of emeritus of peace and world security studies at Hampshire College, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "Surviving an Era of Pervasive Nuclear Instability." First, Emma runs through updates on the US defense of Israel's occupation of Palestine in front of the ICJ, the growing death toll in Gaza and its astounding projections, Ro Khana's visit to Michigan, Biden's Trumpian executive action on immigration, fascism in Texas, Alabama, and Oklahoma, child labor in the US, and US environmental policy, before diving into updates on the GOP's impeachment scam (the one against Biden, more specifically). Mark Joseph Stern then joins, diving right into McElrath v. Georgia, a unanimous decision by Justice Kentanji Brown Jackson, exploring the case's basis in attempting to retry an acquitted man in obvious violation of double jeopardy and looking at how KBJ's history as a public defender played into her decision. He also tackles a case against a Virginia magnet school's attempt to incorporate success in underperforming schools into their otherwise race-blind admissions, and Samuel Alito's attempt to defend anti-gay bigots' right to discriminate as jurors, before wrapping up with SCOTUS' likely decision on the Clean Air Act's Good Neighbor clause, and the devastating impact it could have on the EPA and Ozone regulation. Professor Michael Klare then walks Emma through the recent emergence of China as a nuclear superpower on the global stage, looking at the role of US military expansion in the Indo-Pacific and contentious support for Taiwan in pushing Chinese nuclear expansion. Next, Professor Klare walks through each of the major nuclear flashpoints right now, including Russian-Nato tensions, Taiwan, and the South China Sea, before diving into the status of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea's nuclear arsenal, and the precarious nuclear relationship between India and Pakistan. After touching on the US' potential role in providing nuclear capacities to Saudi Arabia, alongside a broader assessment of nuclear munitions across the globe, Klare explores what to do to make people care about the nuclear threat again. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they discuss the intricacies of Madame Web, watch Nancy Pelosi actively affirm Israel's right to continue the slaughter of Gaza and deny US complicity, while Israel's Chief Pink Washer celebrates the genocide at a Knesset hearing. Bret Weinstein and Joe Rogan posit their bold theory that AIDS is actually caused more by lifestyle decisions than HIV, plus, your calls and IMs! It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Premilla Nadasen, professor of history at Barnard College, to discuss her recent book Care: The Highest Stage of Capitalism. Then, she speaks with Hasan Ali, journalist reporting on US foreign policy and South Asian politics, to discuss his recent piece in The Nation entitled "The Unexpected and Uncertain Result of Pakistan's Elections." First, Emma runs through updates on the IDF's raid of Al Nasser, the shooting at the Chief's Super Bowl Parade, Donald Trump's legal woes, polling coming out of Michigan, the impeachment of Secretary Mayorkas, NY Democrats' willful ignorance, the Texas National Guard, and Indonesian election results, before watching some commentary from orphaned children in Gaza. Professor Premilla Nadasen then dives right into the role of the pandemic in exposing the massive societal gaps in our appreciation for care work, before stepping back to look at what exactly “care work” entails, and how the industry is framed as necessary and “essential” as laborers receive little to no benefits for their work and no support from the government. Expanding on this, Professor Nadasen walks through the makeup of the industry's workforce, its evolution after taking off at the onset of the neoliberal era, and the role undermining the welfare state played in maintaining insecurity among marginalized segments of the population, pushing them into the unregulated field of care work. After looking at the hypocrisy this creates – that of forcing women out of their families to take care of the children of the wealthier – Premilla walks through the importance of supporting care work outside of the marketplace, and wraps up with a brief assessment of the role of social reproduction in care work. Hasan Ali then quickly runs through the political evolution of Imran Khan, from cricket star to military-backed Trumpian populist to politically imprisoned anti-military martyr, working up to the recent mass repression of Khan's PTI party members ahead of Pakistan's 2024 election, and the massive attempt by the military to steal the election out of PTI's grasps. After running through Khan's antagonistic relationship with the USA and CIA, Ali explores the intense backlash to the military's attempt to steal the election, and what to expect heading forward if the PTI is truly able to come out as victors. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle the recent reporting around Israel's murder of a 6-year-old Palestinian girl, Brian from the Chicago Suburbs calls in about the plague of corporate landlords, and a caller from Columbus discusses the failure of the lesser-of-two-evils framing. Donald Trump flips over questions about his mental acuity, Bob from Maryland tackles the uselessness of wish casting on the left, and Matt Walsh explains why you can solve homelessness by ending homelessness, plus, your calls and IM's! It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Mark Paul, assistant professor of economics at Rutgers University, to discuss his recent book The Ends of Freedom: Reclaiming America's Lost Promise of Economic Rights. Then, she speaks with Guillaume Long, former foreign minister of Ecuador and Senior Research Fellow at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), to discuss his recent piece published Foreign Policy entitled "How a Start-Up Utopia Became a Nightmare for Honduras." First, Emma runs through updates on US military action in Iraq, Bibi's insistence on continuing his genocide in Gaza, Biden's attempt to patch things up over that ol' ethnic cleansing, Biden's border plan, Trump's legal battles, Marianne Williamson's candidacy, climate change, a new report on the incredible success of gender-affirming care, and Bolsonaro's alleged crimes, also watching Rep. Rashida Tlaib's incredible speech on the House floor condemning US support for Netanyahu's genocide. Professor Mark Paul then joins, diving right into the inspiration for his piece on an Economic Bill of Rights (and his economic work as a whole) in seeing the richest nation in history make its citizens suffer through the 2008 financial crisis, both conceptualizing that wealth and why GDP doesn't present the full picture of a country's well being under capitalism. Expanding on this, Professor Paul steps back and examines the difference between the negative rights (freedom from X) outlined in the US Constitution, and the positive rights (freedom TO X) that folks like FDR – and some framers – enumerated, and the central importance of promoting freedom – not just protecting it. After walking Sam and Emma through the role of the Civil Rights Movement in carrying forward FDR's anti-capitalist torch, and touching on the role of the Federal Reserve in abandoning its responsibility to manage employment, Mark Paul tackles the complimentary prongs of a jobs guarantee and a universal basic income, working together to rebalance the labor market and present a genuine choice in how workers contribute to society. Wrapping up, they parse through the more abstract element of what “freedom” can mean and assess how the US still fails to deliver on its negative freedoms. Guillaume Long then runs through a brief explanation of the evolution of Honduran politics in the wake of the 2009 US-supported coup and the decade of authoritarianism that followed, before stepping back to walk through the parallel rise of Honduras' ZEDEs – special economic development zones that offer near-complete autonomy to corporations over swaths of Honduran territory – despite large backlash from the Honduran public and legal world. After parsing through some of the details of Honduras' major ZEDEs, and the central role the issue played in the election of leftist Xiomara Castro in 2021, Long walks Emma through the growing efforts against the abuses of corporations, the Western-backed private court that is pushing back, and what to expect as this battle comes to a head. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they assess the insanity of Fox's recent broadcasting of a full assault of a migrant, Armando from Portland dives into the devastation facing young men in Gaza, and Joe Rogan and Aaron Rodgers go full LeBron-Wade as they effortlessly flow between transphobic bigotry, pseudo-anti capitalism, and pure misinformation. Bro Flamingo gives some updates on his union experiences, Tommy Tuberville questions Biden's mental capacities, the right continues its attack on education, and George Santos gloats about the GOP's failures in the House, plus, your calls and IMs! It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Dr. Uche Blackstock, emergency physician and former associate professor of emergency medicine at the New York University, to discuss her recent book Legacy: A Black Physician Reckons With Racism In Medicine. Then, she is joined by Ken Klippenstein, investigative reporter at the Intercept, to discuss his recent reporting on the U.S.'s covert military presence in the Middle East. First, Emma runs through updates on the US lawsuit against Biden for funding the genocide in Gaza, the genocide itself, the war's regional expansion, US economic development, congressional policy, UAW expansion, RFK's candidacy, and Myanmar's secret prisons, before watching South Africa's response to the continuing genocide in Gaza in the face of the ICJ's ruling, and the complicity of third party states. Doctor Uché Blackstock then dives right into her background growing up within a community of Black physicians, including her mother, to becoming the first Black mother-daughter legacy graduates from Harvard Med, and touches on the impact of her mother's passing from leukemia – largely influenced by racialized environmental risk factors – in shaping her perspective on health and race. Next, Dr. Blackstock steps back to tackle the history of Black physicians in the US, looking at the decrease in the rate of Black physicians in the US from 1910-2008, and the impact of the Flexner Report on shutting down many of the thriving Black educational medical institutions, pushing Black people away from the profession and the remaining Black physicians involved out of their communities. After touching on the importance of both policy and institutional pressure to support continued medical practice in marginalized communities, Dr. Blackstock walks Emma through the greater context of racial discrimination in medicine beyond the socioeconomic, including the bias experienced interfacing with the healthcare system, and how the industry approaches issues that predominantly impact Black people and communities of color, before wrapping up with the particular impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black communities. Ken Klippenstein then joins, briefly walking through the recent revelations to the US public of US troop activity in the Middle East, exploring why both the US and the host countries prefer to keep the presence low-key, and why that often results in the US public remaining unaware until personnel are killed. Stepping back, Ken walks Emma through the evolution of the Biden Administration's transparency on military activity in the region – particularly in the wake of Israel's siege on Gaza – the role the US is playing in expanding the conflict in Israel, and what to expect from this military presence moving forward. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they walk through the evolving exposé on WWE Tyrant and monopolist Vince McMahon surrounding his myriad sexual abuses, watch Tom Cotton fail to comprehend Asian identities outside of China, and parse through Nikki Haley's reasonably friendly appearance on the Breakfast Club. Ro Khanna provides some hopeful questioning of the FBI, and Aaron calls in to discuss grappling with family's perspective on the genocide in Gaza, plus, your calls and IMs! It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Juliet Hooker, professor of political science at Brown University, to discuss her recent book Black Grief/White Grievance: The Politics Of Loss. Then, she speaks with Zachary Foster, proprietor of the website Palestine Nexus, to discuss the events on the ground in Israel and Gaza. First, Emma runs through updates on the UAW's endorsement of Joe Biden, Israel's siege on Gaza, the ICJ's impending decision on Israel's genocide, Senate and House politics, GOP fascism, and an Argentinian general strike, before parsing through Greg Abbott's standoff with the US government, Joe Biden, and the Supreme Court over border control, and Joe Biden's incredible willingness to capitulate. Julie Hooker then joins, diving right into her discussion of grief and grievance, and what distinguishes the pain and loss suffered under oppression, from the self-victimization and feelings of loss felt by the oppressor as equality, using moments like January 6th and the Black Lives Matter movement to contextualize this within US politics, and to highlight the grave danger to democracy that is White grievance. Next, Professor Hooker steps back and explores how Black people – largely women – are the ones forced to defend against the threat of White grievance to democracy, such as the fights for enfranchisement, student loan relief, and more. Zachary Foster then dives into his work at Palestine Nexus, and the central importance of preserving Palestinian history and culture in a world that is constantly seeking to silence and destroy it. Next, Foster steps back and walks Emma through the evolution of Palestinian identity, with documents both within the Arab world and the West referring to the Palestinian people and land as such beginning in the late 19th Century, well before the establishment of Israel, and solidly as a pre-Zionist identity. Foster and Emma then walk through the evolution of the Zionist project and its impact on the Palestinian people, with a minimal presence through the turn of the century and into the 1900s, only for the end of the British mandate and the rise of Hitler in Germany to fast track the self-proclaimed settler-colonial project. Expanding on this, Foster tackles the influence of European nationalism (and the exclusion of Jews from this process) on both forcing Zionist emigration from Europe and inspiring the settler-colonial tactics that followed, seeing the ethnic cleansing of some 750k Palestinians at the onset of the Nakba in 1948, and continuing throughout the next few years, before looking to the 1967 war, and Israel's resulting occupation of the West Bank, Gaza, and the Golan Heights. After summarizing the ongoing occupation as a 56-year process of expulsion, land confiscation, destruction of infrastructure, and active disenfranchisement, Zachary and Emma wrap up the interview by looking at South Africa's ICJ case against Israel, and the Zionist project's absurdly narrow attempt to redefine genocide. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton as they parse through Elon Musk and Ben Shapiro's presentation on the importance of Twitter in fighting AGAINST (?!?!) antisemitism, Elon's added Mr. Beast conspiracy, and talk with Jacob from Flint about the emergence of Gretchen Whitmer. Stephen from Alabama does some media critique, and the MR Crew discusses the radical evolution of Greta Thunberg and the UAW's endorsement of Joe Biden, plus, your calls and IMs! It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! Emma speaks with Ussama Makdisi, professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley, to discuss the subject matter of his book Age of Coexistence: The Ecumenical Frame and the Making of the Modern Arab World. Then, she speaks with Rune Moller Stahl, assistant professor in political economy at Copenhagen Business School, to discuss his recent piece in Jacobin entitled "Tesla Has Bitten Off More Than It Can Chew by Picking a Fight With Swedish Unions." First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's ongoing ethnic cleansing of Gaza, the UAW's expansion, the GOP primary, GOP policy, and GOP politics, before touching on some of the opening statements at the International Court of Justice. Ussama Makdisi then joins, diving right into the deep historical context of the case against Israel at the ICJ, looking first at the roots of Zionism in the 1800s as a response to intense antisemitism in Europe, and as a project that took inspiration from Europe in its nationalist, colonialist solution. Expanding on this, Professor Makdisi explores the prevalence of multi-religious coexistence across the Middle East in that era, particularly between Arabs and Jews, how that extended to Palestine, and the culture of denialism around both pre-Nakba Palestinian culture, and the Nakba itself, before touching on the roots of said issues in the west's Islamophobia, and antisemitism. After briefly touching on the inspiration Israel takes from the white supremacist regimes of South Africa and Jim Crow USA, Ussama and Emma discuss the establishment of Israel within the context of Europe's greater colonial project in the Middle East, before wrapping up the interview by touching on South Africa's case at the ICJ. Rune Moller Stahl then walks Emma through the evolving multi-industry and multi-national strike against Tesla in the Nordic countries, beginning with Tesla technicians walking off their jobs in demand of a collective agreement, before sympathy strikes swiftly spread across unions throughout Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Finland. After expanding on the cultural divide between Elon Musk's anti-union attitude and the Nordic model, Professor Stahl parses through the distinct roles of unions in the United States and Sweden, and how they differ in power, organizing, and action. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton as they tackle John Fetterman's turn as he speaks against South Africa's case against Israel at the ICJ, Nick from Pittsburgh dives into political organizing in PA, Corey from Indianapolis discusses ZuckNuts, and Donald Trump gives a genuine answer on the GOP's fanatical pro-life segments. PBD and Co. discuss yoga pants, Gage from Salt Lake City on the lingering presence of 1/6, and Armando in Portland tackles the DEI-Airline conspiracy. Chris Christie gets props from Trump, and it's not for dropping out, plus, your calls and IMs! It's an EmMajority Report Thursday, the first of 2024! She speaks with Dr. Sydney Calkin, senior lecturer in the School of Geography at Queen Mary University in London, to discuss her recent book Abortion Pills Go Global: Reproductive Freedom across Borders. Then, she speaks with Francis Boyle, professor of international law at the University of Illinois, to discuss South Africa filing a case against Israel at the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against Israel over its actions in Gaza. First, Emma runs through updates on the US taking actions against the Houthis over the conflict in the Red Sea, Israel's mounting death toll in Gaza, the US' reaction to South Africa's charge of Genocide against Israel, the murder of a New Jersey Imam, Ilhan Omar's attempt to block Saudi and UAE arms sales, the Epstein files, Donald Trump's corruption, Lina Khan's FTC, the DOJ vs. Texas, and DeSantis anti-vax administration, before parsing through Joy Reid's recent interview with a Palestinian American member of the Biden Admin who resigned in protest. Sydney Calkin then joins, diving right into general perceptions of the illegal abortion industry, with generally violent pictures coming to mind, and how that contrasts with the reality of countries where black market access to abortion pills like Mifepristone and Misoprostol allows women to rely on restricted drugs to perform generally safe, at home abortions. Calkin then walks through the role of the abortion pill in a post-Roe v. Wade United States, playing a major role in states both with and without abortion access, before expanding the picture as she looks to the pill's role in recent reforms in Poland, the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. Next, Sydney walks Emma through her particular interest in the illegal cross-border dealing of this drug, before analyzing the central role it played in redefining what abortion could look like, and wrapping up with a quick assessment of the continuing fight for reproductive rights. Francis Boyle then runs through a quick background on the UN's International Court of Justice and the criminal suit South Africa has brought against Israel over their genocide of Palestinians, exploring his personal history as the first lawyer to win a case on genocide at this court, and why precedent suggests South Africa has a strong chance of winning. After parsing through the difference between the ICJ and the ICC – the latter of which has a history of failing Palestinians – and what this suit means for both Israel and South Africa, Francis and Emma discuss John Kirby's diminishment of the case, and explore the active complicity of the US government per the ICJ's statutes. Boyle wraps up with a quick analysis of the relevant legal text and assesses the expected timeframe of the case. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they tackle the recently released Epstein documents, including a feature of fan-favorite Alan Dershowitz, watch Pope of the Jews go after President Gay, and listen to Dan from Oceanside discuss the future of Baby Boomer politics. Dave from Jamaica calls in for his takes on Ben Shapiro's attacks on former Harvard president Claudine Gay, Tim Pool revises Nikki Haley's Civil War revisionism, and the MR Crew reflects on the absurdity of caring about citation practices as a proxy for genocide, plus, your calls and IMs!
