Dr. Amanda Logue, Chief Medical Officer for Ochsner Lafayette General, joined Discover Lafayette to discuss Ochsner's new General Surgery Residency Program. Accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the surgical residency program received nearly 600 applications for three coveted spots. The 5-year surgery program is expected to grow, training a new class of three residents per academic year, wth the inaugural class beginning July 1, 2024. Ochsner is also pursuing accreditation of Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Transitional Year Programs. On April 16, 2024, Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center, the region's only Level 2 Trauma Center, celebrated the launch of its new General Surgery Residency Program, which will begin July 1, 2024. Located inside the new, recently constructed tower at Ochsner Lafayette General Medical Center, the completed Graduate Medical Education space will be 17,115 square feet. Phase 1 includes eight resident sleep rooms, a resident lounge, classrooms, rounding rooms and lactation rooms. Phase 2 will house numerous simulation labs and additional classroom space. Ziad Ashkar, MD, will serve as the Designated Institutional Official (DIO), ensuring the program meets the rigorous accreditation standards set by the ACGME. Dr. Dennis Eschete will serve as the Program Director for General Surgery. About 25 surgeons will be rotating, with the core group of teaching physicians being Dr. Willard Mosier, Ochsner Lafayette General's head of trauma, Dr. Jason Breaux, Dr. Michael Horaist and Dr. Racheed “Joe” Ghanami. The new residency program is both a strategic response to the escalating physician shortage and a model for innovative care solutions leading to increased patient access. In a 2024 report, the Association of American Medical Colleges projected that physician demand will grow faster than supply, leading to a projected total shortage of up to 86,000 physicians by 2036. Moreover, Louisiana is projected to rank third nationally for a shortage of physicians by 2030, according to a Human Resources for Health analysis. Speaking of the physician shortage being experience here and nationwide, Dr. Amanda Logue shared that 140,000 patients came through Ochsner University Clinics in 2023. "It's a huge volume, there's a huge need for more physicians." Ochsner Lafayette General's new surgery residency program doesn't replace its ongoing partnership with LSU School of Medicine's at University Hospital & Cinics; it complements it. Dr. Logue stated, "The reality is there's a critical need for more physicians, which is why we started our own program in addition to the existing one. This program also signifies our deep commitment to advancing medical education and addressing the dire need for surgeons in our healthcare system." Importantly, data shows that most physicians practice within 70 miles of where they trained, so Ochsner hopes that Lafayette will be a compelling place for their residents to start their medical careers. The goal of the program is not only to provide top-tier educational opportunities, such as training at the region's only Level 2 Trauma Center, but also to inspire innovation and compassion among the residents. The residents will learn to navigate the complexities of healthcare delivery with a patient-first approach, having the opportunity to take part in cutting-edge research and be at the forefront of developing new surgical techniques. Ochsner Health is Louisiana's top healthcare educator of physicians. Annually Ochsner and its partners educate thousands of healthcare professionals. It currently offers 33 Acreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education programs, training over 330 residents and fellows each year. Dr. Logue is board certified in both Internal Medicine and Clinical Informatics, having completed her undergraduate training at LSU in microbiology,

The fingers on my hands are not enough to enumerate the number of television shows and films I have watched since childhood where cancer is made to be the death sentence and the divider of the families of either the main or supporting character. The protagonist feels a certain pain, is shown inside the doctor's office, and the physician somberly states, "You have cancer" or "You have six months to live." There is something so draconian about cancer that a book about the disease was titled "The Emperor of All Maladies." But is cancer truly a death sentence? What is the actual definition of cancer? What makes it different from a tumor? What do the infamous four stages mean? Is there a way that we can now track cancer's origins and hopefully evade the ultimatums that most shows have set? How toxic is chemotherapy, and what other treatments do we have available in the current age?We are joined today by Dr. Sanjay Juneja (aka TheOncDoc), a board-certified hematologist and oncologist, to tackle all things about the emperor of afflictions. Personal items belonging to active-duty military and veterans, like handwritten letters, emails, photos and social media posts, help humanize the American war experience and can become part of our shared history — that's if they aren't lost, forgotten or destroyed. An LSU researcher is now offering resources to help make sure that doesn't happen. Edward Benoit III, associate professor at the LSU School of Library & Information Science, recently began the Virtual Footlocker Project. He tells us more about how this online portal preserves veterans' personal collections. Mosquito bites can spread diseases like malaria, dengue fever and, as we're familiar with in Louisiana, West Nile virus. Mosquito tests usually require human volunteers, but a new research partnership between Tulane and Rice Universities is now using synthetic skin made with a 3D printer. Sam Jameson, a postdoctoral fellow with Tulane University's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, tells us more about the benefits of this new research method.  But first up on Monday's Louisiana Considered,  Alabama has some of the strictest laws on prenatal drug use in the country.  And running afoul of them can cost thousands of dollars, leaving a woman with a felony record and facing the prospect of giving birth in prison. Dr. Malcolm Stubbs, an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in sports medicine, joins Discover Lafayette to discuss the latest technique to restore mobility to patients with degenerative hip issues. In particular, we discuss the ROSA (Robotic Surgical Assistant) robotic hip surgery procedure that Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital has recently added. Dr. Stubbs graduated from LSU and LSU School of Medicine where he served as Chief Resident in orthopedic surgery. After completing a fellowship at the Mississippi Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center, he served as a staff orthopedic surgeon in the U. S. Air Force. Today, he practices at the Lafayette Bone and Joint Clinic and performs arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder, elbow, hip, and knee, shoulder reconstruction and replacement, and hip and knee replacement surgery at the physician-owned Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital. When Dr. Stubbs graduated from medical school in 1993, arthroscopic surgery on the knee was rather commonplace; he says that "The move to minimally invasive surgeries was kicked off by the early pioneers of arthroscopic surgery of the knee. Thereafter, arthroscopic procedures advanced to repair the shoulder, and today, surgical practices have evolved to include this minimally invasive surgery on the hip, elbow, and almost every part of the body. By the late 1990s and early 2000s, surgeons and engineers worked together to develop robotic surgery, which has only become commonplace in the last decade. A robotic device is an additional tool to enhance the procedure for hip and knee replacement as the robot and robotic arms help guide the surgeon in making accurate and precise cuts to the bone while performing replacement surgery. The surgeon is still performing the surgery, but with the help of the robot, the procedure is conducted with more precision, flexibility, and control than is possible with conventional techniques. Robotic procedures have been shown to be highly effective in avoiding misalignment and getting a tight fit based on the individual's anatomy. While the procedure is still relatively new, the expected outcome is that robotic procedures will improve the longevity of prostheses and lead to better outcomes for patients. Already, studies are showing a reduction in patient pain and reduced length of hospital stays. Most people are leery about having hip replacement surgery and before it occurs, all other alternatives such as weight loss, physical therapy, medicine, and exercises such as yoga have typically been tried to no avail. In the past, the most common approach used to perform total hip replacement was a posterior hip replacement, where the surgeon would make the incision at the back of the hip close to the buttocks. With the newer direct anterior approach (front of the hip) developed in the past few years, patients' abductor muscles that operate around the hip joint are better protected from the damage caused by cutting, and patients are able to get up and walk quicker with less pain when these muscles aren't violated. With ROSA (robotic surgical assisted) hip procedure surgery using a direct anterior approach, Dr. Malcolm Stubbs says it "makes a better approach even better! Patients say, 'Doc, I wish I had had this surgery sooner." Hip replacement surgeries are occurring in more and more younger patients in their 50s and some in their 40s, and Dr. Stubbs isn't sure if this is a result of an increase in arthritic conditions or the improved prostheses which make for better surgical outcomes. Whatever the case may be, this ROSA hip minimally-invasive surgical procedure has been shown to reduce patient pain and length of hospital stays. Dr. Stubbs' clinic, the Lafayette Bone and Joint Clinic, is affiliated with Lafayette Surgical Specialty Hospital, a physician-owned hospital. Dr. Stubbs is one of 34 physician owners. He emphasized that other physicians who want to utilize this specialty hospital...

Well, maybe not when you tack the word "climate" in front of it. with a changing climate and rising utility costs, the way we design and build our structures and communities is changing to keep up. And while that presents new challenges it also presents opportunities for those who are thinking about and rethinking the way we do things.   Tom Neyhart is founder and CEO of PosiGen, a Louisiana-based company that designs and installs solar systems to homes in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods and communities of color. Tom founded the company in 2011, after growing frustrated with the disparate recovery process in post-Katrina New Orleans and wanting to do something to help those with limited means find better more affordable ways to rebuild and move forward. PosiGen provides that help by designing and installing solar-power systems, including solar hot water systems, with roofing and energy-efficiency services added to the mix. The systems are available for purchase or lease and customers have a two-way net meter installed on their homes so they are credited for power they generate. In the decade since its founding, PosiGen has served more than 18-thousand customers, underscoring the needs for the services it provides. Tom is a native of Ohio, who came to LSU in the early 1980s to study petroleum engineering and wrestle for the LSU Tigers.  Ken Tipton is a planner, architect and the Managing Partner at Tipton Associates, a Baton Rouge firm that has worked on the design or renovation of some of Baton Rouge's best-known structures, including the main library at Goodwood, the LSU Huey P. Long Field House renovation and the new Catholic High School Student Center.   Ken has been leading Tipton since the early 1980s and has grown the firm from a local firm to one that works nationally in 30 states. He has also served as an adjunct faculty members at the award-winning LSU School of Architecture. Ken also has done master plans for towns, cities and university campuses as well as disaster recovery projects for LSU, LA Tech and East Baton Rouge Schools.  Both PosiGen and Tipton & Associates are Louisiana-ambassador businesses, working beyond the borders of Louisiana, demonstrating our homegrown forward-thinking and adaptive smarts to the rest of the country. Out to Lunch Baton Rouge is recorded live over lunch at Mansurs on the Boulevard.
