The EPA's delay of methane waste standards will cost taxpayers $170 million as billions of cubic feet of natural gas escape into the atmosphere instead of reaching markets. Host Steve Ellis explores this fiscal and health crisis with TCS Vice President Autumn Hanna, Center for Methane Emission Solutions' Isaac Brown, and Evangelical Environmental Network's Rev. Dr. Jessica Moerman. From lost royalty revenues to public health impacts, discover why methane waste prevention isn't just environmental policy—it's smart fiscal stewardship.
With the Trump administration’s dismantling of environmental regulations and total reversal on policies to combat climate change, activists have filed lawsuits and requests for injunctions all over the country. The latest development is the Trump-led Environmental Protection Agency reversing the long-standing “endangerment finding” that greenhouse gases threatened human health and welfare. One environmental law professor at Harvard called it “an assault on the foundation of all federal climate policy.” Lewis & Clark environmental law professor Melissa Powers says Oregon — and other states — do have options to fight climate change, besides filing individual lawsuits. She says one viable strategy would be for Oregon to create a Climate Superfund. We talk with her about what unraveling of environmental regulations is likely to mean in Oregon and more about the potential for an Oregon Climate Superfund.

Send us a textYou probably have forgotten about the role of credit unions in the country's marijuana business - estimated to be north of $40 billion. I know I had. It's been years since we did a show on this topic. But on the show today is Kevin Hart, CEO of Green Check Verified, a business that provides tools to financial institutions that serve the country's many marijuana businesses. As Hart says in the show, narijuana may not be legal in federal law - it is legal in 39 states for medical use and 24 states for personal use - but there is no federal law prohibiting a bank or credit union from providing financial services to a marijuana business. That marijuana business too must operate in full compliance with the laws in its states. How does a credit union successfully navigate this landscape? Also on the show is Megan Bennett, manager MRB compliance at Wright-Patt Credit Union in Ohio. the 38th biggest credit union in the country with assets around $9 billion. MRB of course is Marijuana Related Businesses.Bennett explains, in detail, how Wright-Patt decided to serve marijuana businesses, how it's working for the institution, and why this is a win-win-win for the state of Ohio, the marijuana businesses and the credit union. How many credit unions serve marijuana businesses in the US? Under 200, probably nearer 150. But Wright-Patt just may illustrate how it can be done, legally and well.Listen up.Like what you are hearing? Find out how you can help sponsor this podcast here. Peter is inflamed! Why, he wants to know, searching around him in vain for an ashtray, does smoking seem to be on the rise once more in the UK? Is it vaping? Is it fashionable once more, heaven forfend? He sincerely hopes not. For her part, Sarah doesn't smoke, well, only after three glasses of wine.Elsewhere, Sarah asks is rioting on the rise once again? This week on Dem Vinyl Boyz, we spark off our 8 Weeks of Soundtrack Summer with a cult classic that’s hazy, hilarious, and downright iconic — the 1978 soundtrack to Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke. More than just a stoner comedy, Up in Smoke became a cultural touchstone, ushering in the era of counterculture comedy and solidifying Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong as legends of the genre. The soundtrack captures the film’s irreverent spirit with tracks like “Up in Smoke,” “Earache My Eye,” and plenty of comedic interludes that blend music, satire, and absurdity. In this episode, we’ll roll through how the film and its soundtrack reflected the late-70s vibe, contributed to the duo’s massive success, and left a smoky trail in music and comedy history. Whether you’re reliving your youth or discovering Cheech & Chong’s antics for the first time, this album is a must-spin for fans of comedy, rock, and soundtrack collectors alike. So grab your headphones—and maybe some munchies—and join Dem Vinyl Boyz as we launch Soundtrack Summer with Cheech & Chong’s Up in Smoke. It’s going to be a trip!

This year's Budapest Pride was banned in March under the Orbán government's contentious “child protection” law. Demonstrators were threatened with hefty fines for participating, and the government said it would employ facial-recognition technology to identify and potentially prosecute those who turned out to take part at the march on 28 June. Did the ban work? Not in the slightest. In fact, more people than ever in the 30-year history of Budapest Pride showed up to celebrate their rights as LGBTQ+ human beings. The massive Pride march brought a glimmer of hope to some Hungarian citizens, including this week's guest, writer Krisztián Marton. We spoke with Krisztián about the lead-up to the event, the thrill of being on the ground last Saturday, and what might be next for Hungary, now that Viktor Orbán finally has a formidable challenger in Péter Magyar. We also chatted with Dominic's husband, Thomas Lamers, a philosopher and dramaturg who hit the streets for us, mic in hand. (Thanks, Thomas, we owe you!) Krisztián Marton is a screenwriter and novelist. You can follow him on Instagram here and read an excerpt in English of his Margó Prize-nominated novel Crybaby here. You can donate to Thomas's fundraiser to pay some of the fines that may be incurred by Pride attendees here. What if “someday” never comes? ABOUT THE MESSAGEIn Part 3 of the Hidden in Plain Sight series, Pastor Mark Stermer reminds us through the story of a hard-working father that life can slip through our fingers while we wait for the perfect moment. Don't miss what matters most—faith, family, and purpose. Scripture urges us to number our days and walk wisely, making the most of every moment by living in God's will and focusing on what lasts forever. It's "barbecue," but you know...if you spell it "barbeque," or "BBQ," or "Bar-b-que," it's gonna taste just as good! I got an interview with my man Dave Graham of Graham's Up In Smoke in Philipsburg. Dave's got opinions about barbecue, and that's 100% cool, because he makes excellent barbecue: brisket, pork, chicken (when it's reasonable), sausage, turkey, and salmon. Yes, salmon...but you'll have to wait for Lent! Dave and I got well into the weeds, temperatures, wood, and cuts of meat, and you will be drooling by the time we're done. I'll give you my opinions on barbecue as well; I have been smoking/barbecueing for well over ten years, and I will challenge your thoughts on this ancient method of meat magic cookery. What else? I finally got my first Maibock of the year, from New Trail Brewing, and the Smack Dab In The Centre segment is about three GREAT music venues in Centre County (all of them have a liquor license, so, you know). Next episode? I've got an interview on Monday that I have wanted to get for longer than we've had the podcast, an OG beer bar that I first visited over 20 years ago. That's going to be the heart of a great town profile, I guarantee. See you in two weeks! Until then? TELL YOUR FRIENDS ABOUT THE PODCAST! For over 40 years the world has laughed along with the lovable stoner duo of Cheech & Chong as they navigated the world with smiles on their faces and joints in their pockets. Whether you know him as Yax the nudist colony owning Yak from Zootopia, gracefully doing the tango on Dancing With The Stars, or as Man from 1978 hit Up In Smoke, everybody loves Tommy Chong. At 84, he reflects on the ride that took him from the farms of Calgary to the bright lights of Hollywood, and all the places in between. The Grateful Dead and Tommy Chong would both attest to what a long, strange trip it's been. More than 80,000 Kiwi smokers need to quit their habit before the end of the year to meet the Smokefree 2025 goal, but a public health professor says there's no chanceOur world-leading Smokefree Aotearoa 2025 legislation barely survived to see this year, and the reality of addressing tobacco use is "like whack-a-mole"More than 80,000 Kiwis must quit smoking before the end of the year to meet the goal of Smokefree 2025, which was launched 14 years ago.But Professor of Public Health Chris Bullen tells The Detail that it is unlikely to happen - "I don't believe so, sadly"."The evidence suggests we are not heading in the right direction fast enough," says Bullen, who is also the director of the National Institute for Health Innovation."We have got more work to do in 2026 and beyond."The smokefree goal aims to have less than 5 percent of the population smoking by December, but the latest data reveals there are still about 300,000 daily smokers across the country.Bullen says part of the issue is, last year, the Coalition government repealed three areas of the Smokefree law, most importantly the denicotinisation of tobacco products (where the nicotine is basically taken out of cigarettes) and banning the sale of tobacco products to those born after January 1, 2009."I think we could have gotten to the goal under the previous legislation, but that was repealed by the current government."The lack of policies to support and motivate more people to think about quitting means there's an awful lot of effort on the ground that's got to go on to get 84-, 85-thousand people to quit smoking between now and the end of the year and I just don't see it happening fast enough."He says the denicotinisation strategy needs to be revisited, and a smoke-free generation approach needs to be adopted to encourage young people not to start smoking."Other countries picked up the baton when we dropped it, and I think that would lock in the very low levels of smoking in our young people, forever, and this would be a real boost for their future prospects."The Detail also speaks to Bullen about illegal tobacco and vaping, and the role they play in Smokefree Aotearoa.A tobacco industry-funded report has just revealed that 25 percent of cigarettes sold in New Zealand are from the black market, smuggled into the country, largely from China and South Korea, and available on Facebook Marketplace, at construction sites, and in some dairies…Go to this episode on rnz.co.nz for more details
