Jacob Silverman then walks Sam and Emma through the major influx in crypto spending in the 2024 election cycle, despite the industry's recent stutters, and touches on the potential issue of an industry dominated by criminal conspiracy and transactions shaping US politics, before zeroing in on the particular role of one Tether, perhaps the largest cryptocurrency on the international level and a central investment of incoming Trump Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. After expanding on the incredibly shady, and fully not evidence-backed dealings of Tether, Jacob wraps up by unpacking the ultimate goal of the crypto industry in completely liberating the movement of money, freeing it from the shackles of absurd concepts like “fraud” and government regulations, and the role the Trump administration can play in making this goal a reality. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Robert P. Jones, President and Founder of the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), to discuss his recent book The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy: and the Path to a Shared American Future. First, Sam and Emma break down what has taken place over the weekend in Israel and Gaza, as well as the enormous pro-Palestine demonstrations that were held across the world, specifically the massive march that took place in Washington D.C. to demand a ceasefire. Then, they're joined by Robert, who discusses his research on something known as the "discovery doctrine", a policy put in place by colonizers in the 15th century to justify expropriating lands of indigenous peoples abroad in the name of Western/European exploration and conquering, and how that doctrine has even been used to this day to justify anti-indigenous Supreme Court rulings and policy as recently as the early 1990's. Robert also delves in 3 different communities in Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Mississippi and draws a through line between them, highlighting how indignities inflicted by white settlers on indigenous peoples and by racist whites later on in history on black people characterized all of them, with the "discovery doctrine", while with slight permutations, defines the interactions across ethnicities in those areas. Jones also makes clear the connection between Christian nationalism and white supremacy, and how much of the colonizing mindset, from the 15th century conquests of explorers like Hernando de Soto up until the expeditions of settlers moving West during the time of "Manifest Destiny" in the late 1800's, are defined by both ideologies. Before he leaves, Robert threads this particular needle to the present day in the time of Speaker Mike Johnson, someone he refers to as "the embodiment of Christian nationalism in a tailored suit." And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma touch on the terrible polling out of the NYTimes/Siena college, as well as ABCNews/Ipsos, that shows Biden's favorability plummeting and him losing multiple hypothetical swing state matchups with Trump, a showing so bad that even David Axelrod wants Biden to consider stepping aside. Then, they check in on some of the progressive House members appearances on the weekend shows, where Reps. Pramila Jayapal and Jamaal Bowman highlighted the complicity of the Israeli military on the atrocities in Gaza; they also take a look at Israeli historian Avi Shlaim debunking some of the rhetoric surrounding the so-called "divisiveness" of the phrase "from the river to the sea." They also take a look at Sen. Cory Booker trying desperately to stop a pro-ceasefire chant from growing at one of his rallies, to the tune of "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge. It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Blair LM Kelley, director of The Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina, to discuss her recent book Black Folk: The Roots of the Black Working Class. First, Emma runs through updates on Biden's call for a humanitarian pause in Gaza, Dick Durbin's call for a ceasefire, the death toll in Gaza, the split between House and Senate GOP, the failure of both censure votes in the House, Oregon's teachers strike, and legal battles involving Trump and trans rights, before parsing through Lindsay Graham's despicable response to Israel's bombing of Palestinians civilians. Blair LM Kelley then joins, jumping right into the absurd presentation of the working class in US politics, with a consistent focus on rural and suburban white populations despite the long and intricate history of a Black and POC working class in the US. First, Kelley steps back and parses through her own family's history as members of the Black working class in the US, exploring how they were barred from working the jobs that they were skilled in or that allowed them any economic or social freedom – a practice deeply embedded in the US' history well after the Civil War – before stepping back to analyze how this systemic deskilling of African Americans alongside the social segregation worked to shape the stereotypes of Black Americans as dependent on the government, despite the constant reality of Black Americans paying the same taxes and receiving drastically fewer benefits. Skipping a couple of centuries forward, Kelley then walks Emma through the role of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the designation of “essential” workers, in bringing the problem of proper compensation and fair working conditions for Black and POC Americans back to the fore. Next, Kelley looks at the industry of domestic labor as a central institution in the stunting of labor rights and conditions for Black and POC Americans – particularly women – before wrapping up with the myth of the “Working Class Trump Voter” and the intense intersection between labor and citizenship in the topic at hand. Emma also touches on the recent raid of a top Eric Adams fundraiser by the FBI and NYPD. Brian Merchant then joins, diving right into the misrepresentation of the Luddites in mass culture – largely expressing their aversion to technology as a problem of intelligence or conservatism, rather than their actual ideology, which objected to technology's role in increasing (rather than decreasing) labor exploitation in industrializing England. Stepping back, Merchant then contextualizes the rise of Luddism in the 18th Century, walking through the particularly rapid mechanization of the textile and cloth industries, bolstered by increasing cotton production from the slave trade in North America, and the complete alignment of the Crown with the Capitalists' decision to leverage technological development for themselves, and against labor, consumers, and community. Next, Merchant dives into the story of George Meller to paint a picture of the climax of the Luddite movement at the turn of the 19th Century, as, despite their best efforts, the 1800s see even more anti-labor automatization, pushing their tactics from disruption to destruction, only for violent pushback from the Crown and dwindling public support to eventually crush the movement. Wrapping up, Merchant explores the legacy of the Luddite movement, both as a foreshadowing of the role of the state in labor disputes, and in putting forward the blueprint for the militant unionism we see carried out by the most successful labor coalitions of today. It's Hump Day! Emma speaks with Sophia Moccio and Aaron Habrack, ICU nurses at the Robert Wood Johnson (RWJ) hospital in New Brunswick, New Jersey, to discuss the recent developments in their strike, which has lasted over 75 days. Then, Emma is joined by Bhaskar Sunkara, president of The Nation, to discuss his recent piece in The Guardian on the 40th anniversary of the coup in Grenada. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's bombarding of a blockaded Gaza, the UN Secretary General's calls for a ceasefire, DeSantis' crackdown on pro-Palestine action, and the potential speakership of Mike Johnson. Sophia Moccio and Aaron Habrack then join, first reflecting on the 83 days that they and the other RWJ Nurses have been on strike and the severe backlash that they've faced at the hands of RWJ management, before stepping back to assess the conditions that pushed the nurses to this point, with a particular focus on the over-working and under-staffing that led to poor patient care. After looking at the massive role RWJ plays within both New Brunswick and New Jersey writ large, Sophia and Habrack tackle the legislative reform they're hoping New Jersey will institute, and how we – on the outside – can help. Bhaskar Sunkara then jumps right into the forgotten story of the only successful socialist revolution in the anglophone world – that of Grenada – and what we can learn from its memory 40 years after a US invasion crushed it. After briefly exploring the role that socialist internationalism – particularly with Cuba – played in bolstering this revolution (and the US' opposition to it), Bhaskar steps back to walk Emma through the conditions of the absurd and corrupt rule of Eric Gairy that primed the radicalizing afro-Caribbean population for revolution, exploring how some 50 people drew on popular support to overthrow a regime of thousands. Next, Sunkara and Emma run through the overwhelming and immediate success of the socialist policies under Maurice Bishop, as well as the incredible effort it took from an incredibly small movement, before wrapping up with the eventual decline of Bishop's regime and the Regan-backed overthrow of his party after four short years in power.
