AOC to respond to Sen. Elissa Slotkin's call for the need for change in Democratic leadership. Cortez says that if elected officials are going to call for change, then they need to elaborate on what kind of change they're talking about. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson holds a press conference where he reads the platform of the Democratic Socialists of America. Speaker Johnson fails at fear mongering as the platform sounds reasonable and includes some ideas that even conservatives would agree with. Morning Joe Scarborough claims to be fed up with false accusations of antisemitism towards voters and politicians who take a stand on Israel's genocide. Susan Collins says that she does not regret casting the deciding vote to confirm Brett Kavanaugh to the Supreme Court. Collins went on to say that Kavanaugh was not the deciding vote in the 6-3 ruling to overturn Roe V. Wade. The problem with that is that the vote was not 6-3, it was 5-4 and Kavanaugh was in fact the deciding vote to overturn Roe v. Wade. Collins' opponent Graham Platner says that the Senator's comments are either a lie or ignorance - both of which are disqualifying. Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Robert P. Jones, President and Founder of the Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), to discuss his recent book The Hidden Roots of White Supremacy: and the Path to a Shared American Future. First, Sam and Emma break down what has taken place over the weekend in Israel and Gaza, as well as the enormous pro-Palestine demonstrations that were held across the world, specifically the massive march that took place in Washington D.C. to demand a ceasefire. Then, they're joined by Robert, who discusses his research on something known as the "discovery doctrine", a policy put in place by colonizers in the 15th century to justify expropriating lands of indigenous peoples abroad in the name of Western/European exploration and conquering, and how that doctrine has even been used to this day to justify anti-indigenous Supreme Court rulings and policy as recently as the early 1990's. Robert also delves in 3 different communities in Minnesota, Oklahoma, and Mississippi and draws a through line between them, highlighting how indignities inflicted by white settlers on indigenous peoples and by racist whites later on in history on black people characterized all of them, with the "discovery doctrine", while with slight permutations, defines the interactions across ethnicities in those areas. Jones also makes clear the connection between Christian nationalism and white supremacy, and how much of the colonizing mindset, from the 15th century conquests of explorers like Hernando de Soto up until the expeditions of settlers moving West during the time of "Manifest Destiny" in the late 1800's, are defined by both ideologies. Before he leaves, Robert threads this particular needle to the present day in the time of Speaker Mike Johnson, someone he refers to as "the embodiment of Christian nationalism in a tailored suit." And in the Fun Half, Sam and Emma touch on the terrible polling out of the NYTimes/Siena college, as well as ABCNews/Ipsos, that shows Biden's favorability plummeting and him losing multiple hypothetical swing state matchups with Trump, a showing so bad that even David Axelrod wants Biden to consider stepping aside. Then, they check in on some of the progressive House members appearances on the weekend shows, where Reps. Pramila Jayapal and Jamaal Bowman highlighted the complicity of the Israeli military on the atrocities in Gaza; they also take a look at Israeli historian Avi Shlaim debunking some of the rhetoric surrounding the so-called "divisiveness" of the phrase "from the river to the sea." They also take a look at Sen. Cory Booker trying desperately to stop a pro-ceasefire chant from growing at one of his rallies, to the tune of "We Are Family" by Sister Sledge. It's another EmMajority Report Thursday! She speaks with Blair LM Kelley, director of The Center for the Study of the American South at the University of North Carolina, to discuss her recent book Black Folk: The Roots of the Black Working Class. First, Emma runs through updates on Biden's call for a humanitarian pause in Gaza, Dick Durbin's call for a ceasefire, the death toll in Gaza, the split between House and Senate GOP, the failure of both censure votes in the House, Oregon's teachers strike, and legal battles involving Trump and trans rights, before parsing through Lindsay Graham's despicable response to Israel's bombing of Palestinians civilians. Blair LM Kelley then joins, jumping right into the absurd presentation of the working class in US politics, with a consistent focus on rural and suburban white populations despite the long and intricate history of a Black and POC working class in the US. First, Kelley steps back and parses through her own family's history as members of the Black working class in the US, exploring how they were barred from working the jobs that they were skilled in or that allowed them any economic or social freedom – a practice deeply embedded in the US' history well after the Civil War – before stepping back to analyze how this systemic deskilling of African Americans alongside the social segregation worked to shape the stereotypes of Black Americans as dependent on the government, despite the constant reality of Black Americans paying the same taxes and receiving drastically fewer benefits. Skipping a couple of centuries forward, Kelley then walks Emma through the role of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the designation of “essential” workers, in bringing the problem of proper compensation and fair working conditions for Black and POC Americans back to the fore. Next, Kelley looks at the industry of domestic labor as a central institution in the stunting of labor rights and conditions for Black and POC Americans – particularly women – before wrapping up with the myth of the “Working Class Trump Voter” and the intense intersection between labor and citizenship in the topic at hand. Emma also touches on the recent raid of a top Eric Adams fundraiser by the FBI and NYPD. And in the Fun Half: Emma is joined by Brandon Sutton and Matt Binder as they parse Bernice King's response to Amy Schumer's use of MLK to justify the bombing of Gaza, and watch Ilan Pappe examine the long history of Israeli propaganda attempting to instil fear in Jews everywhere. Brian Merchant then joins, diving right into the misrepresentation of the Luddites in mass culture – largely expressing their aversion to technology as a problem of intelligence or conservatism, rather than their actual ideology, which objected to technology's role in increasing (rather than decreasing) labor exploitation in industrializing England. Stepping back, Merchant then contextualizes the rise of Luddism in the 18th Century, walking through the particularly rapid mechanization of the textile and cloth industries, bolstered by increasing cotton production from the slave trade in North America, and the complete alignment of the Crown with the Capitalists' decision to leverage technological development for themselves, and against labor, consumers, and community. Then, Emma is joined by Bhaskar Sunkara, president of The Nation, to discuss his recent piece in The Guardian on the 40th anniversary of the coup in Grenada. First, Emma runs through updates on Israel's bombarding of a blockaded Gaza, the UN Secretary General's calls for a ceasefire, DeSantis' crackdown on pro-Palestine action, and the potential speakership of Mike Johnson. Sam and Emma speak with Ilan Pappe, professor of history at the University of Exeter and Director of the European Centre for Palestine Studies, to discuss the ongoing conflict in Israel and Gaza. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Israel's continuing bombardment of the people of Gaza, their expanding attack in the West Bank, global pro-Palestine action, the GOP's speakership clown car, SAG-AFTRA's strike, crime rates, and local news funding, before parsing through the hilarious task that is being a republican talking to media right now. Professor Pappe then joins, diving right into Israel's response to the Hamas attacks on October 7th, including the media's persistent revenge narrative arming the population for a compassionless siege on Gaza, the pervasive understanding by Israeli civilians that the Israeli army and government can't and won't protect them, and why – despite seeing the necessity – the Israeli public is not open to a discussion of alternatives to Israeli occupation. Stepping back, Professor Pappe then walks Sam and Emma through the genesis of the Zionist movement as an attempt to redefine Jewish identity as a nationality amid increasing persecution (and national-identity building) in 19th-century Europe, tackling backing of the project by European states and the US during the onset of the 20th Century, as they sought a clean expulsion of Jews from Europe, with an extra emphasis for the British on expanding their sphere of influence. After expanding on the Western-led colonial structure of the establishment of Israel – particularly in the ethnic cleansing of local populations – Ilan Pappe walks through the thriving cosmopolitan world of pre-Israel Palestine, one in which communities and religions coexisted, as a proper pretext for a discussion of the following eviction and cleansing of these local populations in the leadup to the Nakba in 1948, also touching on the use of Europe's own crimes against Jewish people as a justification for the violence being imposed upon the Palestinians from 1948 on. Wrapping up, Sam, Emma, and Professor Pappe explore the obvious failings of an Israeli two-state solution, why a single multi-racial, multi-ethnic democracy with full rights for Palestinians is the only viable option, and how Israel and Palestine are reading the international responses to the occupation. Emma speaks with Spencer Headworth, associate professor of sociology at Purdue University, to discuss his recent book Rules of the Road: The Automobile and the Transformation of American Criminal Justice. First, Emma runs through updates on the arrest of 500 peaceful anti-zionist protesters in DC at a Jewish Voices for Peace rally, the growing death and devastation out of Gaza, US Aid to war, Jim Jordan's speakership, Trump's legal battles, and the hot labor market, before parsing through the moving speeches by Rashida Tlaib and Naomi Klein at the JVP rally. Spencer Headworth then joins as he dives right into the evolution of the automobile and its particular impact on policing in the US. First, Headworth walks through the general bloody invention of the car (causing more American deaths over WWI than the war did), and the capitulation of the US government to the whims of corporations, initiating a slow but sure reassignment of the roads from a public place – for play, community, and commerce – to one exclusively for automobiles, with the criminalization of pedestrian use of the vast majority of streets under jaywalking. Expanding on this, Headworth dives into the impact of the automobile revolution on the implementation of the 4th Amendment, with prohibition law enforcement ramping up the use of “probable cause” to stop and search an automobile and its driver, particularly as traffic stops became the primary interaction between citizens and the state. Moving to the second half of the 20th Century, Emma and Spencer explore the role of both suburbanization – and the parallel decimation of urban areas – and in reinventing American segregation, and interstate highways in pushing the federalization of the very same crimes that were punishing Black and brown Americans at increasingly horrifying numbers, before tackling how all of these elements, aided by the wars on drugs and poverty, pushed racial biases to the center of policing strategy. Wrapping up, they look at the devastating impact of policing's evolution alongside the automobile, and how it serves to reinforce the US police state. Happy Monday! Sam is off today, but in honor of Indigenous People's Day he spoke with Peter D'Errico, professor emeritus of legal studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst,  about his recent book Federal Anti-Indian Law: The Legal Entrapment of Indigenous Peoples. But first, Emma spoke with Orly Noy, editor at Local Call and chair of B'Tselem's executive board, to discuss the recent fighting between Palestine and Israel.  Emma also walked through on the UAW's labor action, Donald Trump's assessment of RFK, a devastating earthquake in Afghanistan, and Gavin Newsom's regressive veto campaign, before stepping back to look at the role of Israel's ongoing apartheid state and Bibi Netanyahu's genocidal government in pushing this conflict to its breaking point. Orly joins the show from Jerusalem, as she updates Emma on the state of war within Israel and Palestine, even as far from the primary conflict as Jerusalem is. Next, Noy parses through Bibi Netanyahu's response as a perfect encapsulation of his political agenda, completely committing his power to punishing Gaza and Palestine, and shoring up his own political station. Expanding on this, Noy walks through the failure of the Israeli government to even provide safety for Israelis, dedicating their forces to a genocidal response and leaving civilian safety to civilian organizers, before she and Emma step back and assess the evolution of Netanyahu's approach (or lack thereof) to Palestine, pulling every maneuver to bypass them politically, while maintaining a strict and severe military occupation. Wrapping up, Noy assesses Hamas' outcast role in Palestinian politics and military resistance, and why ground invasion would be an incredibly dangerous development for the already criminally fragile open-air prison that is Gaza. Professor D'Errico then walks through the evolution of the doctrines of settler colonialism in what is now the United States, with the doctrine of Christian discovery that launched the colonial era from Spain and England setting the stage for the US' own domestic justification for the “manifest destiny” agenda. Expanding on this, D'Errico and Sam explore the central cases in the establishment of Chief Justice John Marshall's ‘Marshall Doctrine' in Indian Law, which actively committed to the perspective of Christian dominion and discovery, and asserted the native peoples as a sub-human class unable to look after their land. Next, they look to the post-Marshall evolution of the doctrine, with the Court carrying its vision forward while slowly obscuring its origins, seeing it affirmatively cited even by supposedly progressive justices like RBH, without reference to Christianity. After expanding on the Marshall Doctrine's secondary purpose as a reinforcement of federal domination over the states, D'Errico wraps up by walking through the contemporary battles over the Marshall Doctrine, the push for full assimilation of Native territories, and the need to bring the origins of the doctrine back into full public view. Then, she's joined by Brian Concannon, human rights lawyer and executive director of the Institute for Justice & Democracy (IJDH) in Haiti, to discuss the UN's recent authorization of Kenyan forces into Haiti in an attempt to stabilize the country. First, Emma runs through updates on the House GOP's Speakership Fight 2.0, Biden border hawkery, the arrest of Code Pink activists, COVID vaccines, the Menendez fraud, various fraudulent GOP campaigns, Biden's student debt relief, and the Alabama gerrymandering case, before parsing through the incredible launch of a 75k strong Kaiser Permanente healthcare workers' strike. Vincent Bevins then joins, diving right into his work exploring the 2010s through the lens of mass protest and their impact, bringing to light the shocking fact that many of the most notorious protests of the era lead to the very opposite of their original goals. Next, looking to his key examples, Bevins walks Emma through the mass protests that exploded in Brazil in June 2013, looking at the role of mass and social media in highly publicizing the protests and the state's violent response, and expanding the protests well beyond their original aims as various political groups took advantage of the moment, pushing aside the social democratic goals of original organizers in favor of broad anti-corruption, anti-regime ideas, all of which laid the path to the corrupt anti-corruption case that jailed Lula da Silva and landed Bolsonairo in the presidency. Expanding on this, Vincent Bevins parses through the failure of the organizing strategy of the new left – following decades of the crippling social and organizing structures under neoliberalism and atomization – and why the decentralization presented by largely media-driven mobilization can often see moments hijacked by more centralized and politically powerful groups, before looking more carefully at the evolution of the internet over the last two decades, and how the ideas of the social good of the internet and the neoliberal "end of history" were actively challenged as mainstream ideas. Wrapping up, Vincent and Emma explore what the successful protests of the era looked like, and the importance of a movement that speaks for itself – lest someone else speak for them. Brian Concannon then tackles the recently approved, UN-backed, Kenyan-run mission to police the people of Haiti, walking through the birth of the mission in the U.S. State Department and their intense desire to not be seen killing Black Haitians in poor neighborhoods, resulting in their outsourcing of the project to the Kenyan military. Next, Concannon parses through the interests behind the State Department's project to maintain the unelected regime of Ariel Henry – a project they present as pro-democracy – and their hope to avoid conflict before the 2024 election, before they wrap up with an assessment of the material impact of Biden's anti-immigration presidency.
