Equipe:Roteiro/edição : Marcos MorcegoVoz/Postagem: Marcos MorcegoCapa: Geovane Monteiro / @geovanemonteiro.bsky.social / @geovanedesenheiro
In this episode we welcome back Olúfẹmi O. Táíwò. Táíwò is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy at Georgetown University. Earlier this year we interviewed him to talk about his book Reconsidering Reparations. In this episode we talk about his latest book Elite Capture: How the Powerful Took Over Identity Politics (And Everything Else) which hits book stores this week. In this conversation we talk about elite capture as a concept. We talk about how elite capture has morphed dominant understandings of what folks mean by the term “identity politics” in stark contrast to the version of it put forth in the Combahee River Collective Statement back in 1977. Femi dispels notions that the ways elites have captured and reappropriated this term are unique to identity politics, and argues persuasively that in fact elite capture is a system behavior that shows up in all kinds of places and ways within our social systems, and that social movements and our radical ideas are not immune to this process. We also talk about some other examples and versions of elite capture big and small that are occurring all the time, and talk about how we might best fight back against this phenomenon. In addition we get some discussion of what Táíwò refers to as deference politics, as well as politics that are based around trauma. Including some of the things that he thinks these approaches get right, and some of the things that they get wrong and ways we might differently engage the problems they seek to address. And we also get into some discussions around the attention economy and Femi touches on privilege discourse as well. We've continued to take some hits to our patronage for the show lately. We just want to say that we know times are tough for everyone financially right now and we just really want to give a shout-out to everyone who is continuing to give what they can to support the show. If you haven't become a patron yet, it's the best way you can support our ability to bring these conversations week after week. You can do that at patreon.com/millennialsarekillingcapitalism for as little as $1 a month or $10.80 per year. Now here is our conversation with Olúfẹmi O. For this episode we invited Asad Haider on to talk about identity politics and mental health. Haider wrote a book called Mistaken Identity in 2018, which weaves in a blend of personal narratives and scholarly analysis; Haider shares on the one hand the "lived experiences" of being on the receiving end of racism having grown up in a Pakistani immigrant family in post-9/11 America, and on the other a deep challenge for the left to consider whether modern identity politics are capable of significantly and positively transforming society. We ask Haider if he thinks there has been cultural and interpersonal progress on the left from the now relatively normalized integration of mental health and trauma therapy language into identity politic discourse (ie, invalidation, trigger, safe space, micro-aggression). Haider argues that there's a mistake in assuming there are more similarities than differences for people with "the same identities," and that operating on this assumption often leads to ineffective politics. Harriet and Max try to balance the need to acknowledge the psychological significance of identity while understanding the limitations of identity as a form of politics. Asad Haider is a founding editor of Viewpoint Magazine. He is the author of Mistaken Identity. His writing can be found in The Baffler, n+1, The Point, Salon, and elsewhere. Theorist and author Asad Haider joins Below the Radar to discuss questions he explores in his book, "Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump." Asad discusses how class dynamics cannot be separated from identity-driven movements. As well, he explores ideas of political exhaustion in the tradition of political theorists such as Sylvain Lazarus and Alain Badiou. In this interview, Asad interrogates the role of identity in politics and how it has been taken up in discourse — complicating the relationship between race and class in a context that has been defined by capital interests. Asad and Am discuss theoretical questions around frameworks for political organizing and solidarity across movements. He also speaks to our current moment as one of political exhaustion, where it’s difficult to mobilize transformative political change. — Asad Haider’s website: http://www.asadhaider.com/ — Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump by Asad Haider: https://www.versobooks.com/books/2716-mistaken-identity — “Emancipation & Exhaustion” - South Asian Avant Garde Anthology: https://saaganthology.com/Emancipation-and-Exhaustion — Viewpoint Magazine: https://viewpointmag.com/ — Review: “Mistaken Identity by Asad Haider review – the best criticism of identity politics” - The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/books/2018/may/31/mistaken-identity-by-asad-haider-review — Revolutionary Suicide by Huey P. Hello! Today’s subscriber episode is a wide-ranging conversation Asad Haider, one of the founding editors of Viewpoint Magazine and the author of Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump. Jay talked to Asad about his concept of “depoliticization,” his book on identity politics, and political exhaustion. *- note from Jay: When we started the podcast, Asad was at the top of the list of guests I wanted to invite onto the show. I was really excited to talk to him at length. Mistaken Identity was a very eye-opening book for me to read and everyone should read it, although with these recent pieces. On Depoliticization, in Viewpoint. Emancipation and Exhaustion, in SaaganthologyDismissal, in The Point. And a little housekeeping: we tried something different with the audio levels for this one, so please let us know if it sounds better. Read by Malcolm London and introduced by Asad Haider. Born in 1948, Fred Hampton was a talented organizer from an early age, brokering peace among street gangs in his hometown of Chicago and striving to build a class-conscious, multiracial movement he called the “rainbow coalition.” An active Black Panther, Hampton was constantly surveilled by the FBI and Chicago police. He was considered such a threat to national security that, at the age of 21, the FBI and police murdered him in his bed while he slept. Hampton's speech “Power Anywhere There's People” was delivered at a church just a few months before his assassination, and outlines his belief in the importance of engaging the masses through socialist public service programs. “We have to understand very clearly that there's a man in our community called a capitalist. Sometimes he's Black and sometimes he's white. But that man has to be driven out of our community, because anybody who comes into the community to make profit off the people by exploiting them can be defined as a capitalist. And we don't care how many programs they have, how long a dashiki they have. Because political power does not flow from the sleeve of a dashiki; political power flows from the barrel of a gun. It flows from the barrel of a gun!” — Fred Hampton

Sam and Emma host Maurice Chammah, staff writer at The Marshall Project, and author of Let the Lord Sort Them: The Rise and Fall of the Death Penalty joins the show to discuss his new book and how America might move beyond its shameful history of capital punishment. Sam and Chammah explore how the death penalty took hold through American culture, particularly Texas, and its relationship to reconstruction and lynchings in the south. Chammah continues to describe the mythology of Texas, frontier justice, and how it impacted the continuation of the death penalty. The two continue their conversation considering how state governments made capital punishment operational from the 1970s onward, and how Bill Clinton used it to secure his political future. Sam, Emma, and Chammah conclude their conversation by examining the future of the death penalty and how a Democratic administration could work around states' efforts to uphold their capital punishment. Chammah closes the discussion by talking about changing punitive carceral reform and the incremental changes needed to provide a more humane society. And in the Fun Half: Reaching out to Christians with left talking points, will Dems repeal GOP tax cuts, why the fever will not break for the GOP, dispatches from George Floyd Park in Minneapolis, the disturbing footage of Rochester NY cops pepper-spraying a black child in the back of their squad car, plus your calls and IMs! A dream is just a wish your heart makes. In which we discuss episodes 9, 10, 11 and 12 of LOST. We talk about how Danielle Rousseau is scary and beautiful and how Jean-Jacques Rousseau is neither of those things; rationality and the enlightenment; dreams, psychics, horror and surrealism; Jonathan talks about the history of Iraq in the 20th century; Erin describes an incredibly weird, slightly disturbing Eraserhead inspired dream she once had. I talked to Asaid Haider, author of Mistaken Identity about the politics of identity and a little about thrash metal.
Donald and Rudy welcome Asad Haider from Viewpoint Magazine to discuss the present political moment. Using Badiou's "The Rebirth of History: Times of Riots and Uprisings" as a starting point, we discuss riots as a political expression in an intervallic period. We talk about the shape of the party should take to represent this political will, the racial context, overdetermination and spontaneity, and how history is being restarted.
Asad Haider is a founding editor at Viewpoint Magazine and the author of Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump. In this conversation he explains how the history of anti-racist struggle in the United States provides a compelling set of ideas for a dynamic, anti-capitalist emancipatory practice. Along the way, we discuss the value of reading Marx in 2020, our distorted view of 1960s and 1970s radicalism, the significance of the Black Lives Matter moment, and much more.
Samelys López talks why she's running for congress, how her experience with child homelessness has shaped her platform, the kind of music her neighbors are playing in the background during our interview, the corporate centrist democrats she's challenging in the primary and her humanist anti-imperialist foreign policy. Asad Haider talks about police violence, the Sanders campaign, political violence, and how rational looting is.
Asad Haider, author, writer, and editor of Viewpoint Magazine, discusses how political imagination is actually more pragmatic and necessary than lesser-evil voting. Asad Haider's book "Mistaken Identity" can be found at Verso Books: https://www.versobooks.com/books/2716-mistaken-identity
With guest Asad Haider, we discuss at length the theoretical polemic of E.P. Thompson against Louis Althusser. What was the historical context for each side of this conflict (in which Althusser never participated directly)? What was Thompson’s critique? Asad argues that Thompson did not understand Althusser correctly, or even provide a satisfactory conceptual account of what was best about his own empirical research. The two, may have been closer to each other than Thompson understood. A humanist, he preferred the young Marx; Althusser, an anti-humanist, argued systematically for the importance of the mature Marx. Both, however, were reacting to the Stalinist ossification of their respective national Communist parties. Jamie and Sean speak with Asad Haider (@generalityiii), editor at Viewpoint Magazine and author of "Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump" about depoliticization, the left post-Bernie, and that eternal question, "what is to be done?" In this episode we talk to Asad Haider. Haider is the author of Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump (Verso, 2018), and a founding editor of Viewpoint Magazine. We talk to Asad about his analysis of the Marxist idea of universal emancipation and how he addresses the debate of a race first or class first orientation. We also talk about the strategy of socialists attaining power electorally within a capitalist system, and how socialists should think about the state. We discuss other forms of socialist organizing, strategies for building political power, and the shifting landscape of labor politics and capitalist economics in the COVID-19 pandemic.
CAPITALISM / SOCIALISM / DEMOCRACY Interviewer: RAFAEL KHACHATURIAN. “Identity politics” is a term typically marshaled to attack something the speaker dislikes, whether it a conservative deploring “special rights” accorded to minority groups or a progressive bemoaning anything that distracts from a focus on economic justice. ASAD HAIDER’s 2018 book, Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump, excavates the origin of the term within the radical politics of the Combahee River Collective, showing how foregrounding a widely neglected group – black women – was envisioned as a step toward realizing universal emancipation. In his discussion with political theorist Rafael Khachaturian, Haider argues that, by similarly embracing the ideal of the emancipation of all, Marxist traditions retain their political relevance even as they need to be continually rethought and reworked to address current crises, from the Great Recession to the presidency of Donald Trump. Haider is a visiting assistant professor of philosophy at the New School of Social Research and a founding editor of Viewpoint Magazine. Note: This episode was recorded on February 28, 2020, prior to widespread coronavirus countermeasures.
We take a look at what is quite possibly the most insane couple of days in the last 3 or 4 decades and ask a couple of questions, like: what do I do next? Will I get to shoot a harpoon out of a moving vehicle? Was Christian rapper Toby Mac right about everything? Then we talk with Viewpoint Magazine's Asad Haider (@generalityiii) about the task before us and about how to construct a radically new vision of society. Read Asad's work here: https://www.viewpointmag.com/2019/12/16/on-depoliticization/ https://www.viewpointmag.com/2020/03/16/what-is-political-power/ And of course you can support us on Patreon if you feel so inclined! www.patreon.com/trillbillyworkersparty
Full Transcript Available At: laborwaveradio.com/asadhaider What is the relationship between race and class, and which should be the primary focus for addressing on the level of political organizing? Questions such as these, argues our guest Asad Haider, miss the mark as they seek to make determinations about the world at the level of conceptual abstractions. Furthermore, he suggests, such questions slide into a muddled debate between advancing either universalist or particularist demands. The reality, he suggests, is that the abolition of white supremacy and the advancing of class struggle are by necessity universal programs beginning with particular demands. Asad Haider is an editor of Viewpoint Magazine and author of Mistaken Identity: Anti-Racism and the Struggle Against White Supremacy (Verso, Spring 2018). Producer Alex picks his favorite interviews of 2018, featuring: Roy Scranton, Radha D'Souza, Tithi Bhattacharya, Asad Haider, C. Riley Snorton and Max Haiven.
Identity politics. Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past few years, you’ll have at least heard the term. One particular version of identity politics featured heavily in Hillary Clinton’s campaign for the American Presidency. And if you spend so much as five minutes in left wing circles on social media, you’ll be guaranteed to encounter another, especially strident version of it. But what does the term identity politics actually mean? And why has it taken hold of the political left throughout the Western world in such an extraordinary way? Alex Whisson spoke to Asad Haider, author of Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump.
Its become almost cliche to say that we are now somehow living in an age of identity politics. Controversies ostensibly belonging to that term seem to be piling up at a ferocious rate. Whether it be to do with toxic masculinity in online gaming communities, the tearing down of confederate statues in southern American states, the campaign access to transgender bathrooms, the failure of Hillary Clinton’s election campaign to recognize that gender is not a category that excludes the working class, or the right to freedom of speech of members of the so-called ‘intellectual dark web,’ it seems we’re just awash with this intense and rapidly proliferating series of disputes over how we regulate speech and symbolic acts, in the public sphere. Clearly, we do think these debates are important — after all, as any politically-active user on Twitter and Facebook will tell you — we can spend vast amounts of time in arguments about these issues. And we continue to engage in them, even tho they don’t seem to change anyone’s minds (and reports suggest they are actually not very good for our mental health!). But how did we get here? What made us suddenly so aware of identity, and why do we feel the need to argue about it? Is there anything redeeming about identity politics, and how — or to what extent — should the left be engaging in it? To discuss these questions and more, our guest for this episode is Marie Moran. Marie is a lecturer in Equality Studies at the School of Social Policy, Social Work and Social Justice, in UCD, in Dublin, and she has a piece in the latest issue of Historical Materialism, called ‘Identity and Identity Politics’. Based on some pretty compelling research, she lays out an argument in the piece that identity is actually a very new concept in the analysis of social life, and that we need to exercise much greater care in our approach to distinguishing what it is, and what isn’t. As you’ll hear in the interview, Marie isn’t necessarily opposed to identity politics. Not by any means. But she does believe that we may have taken a wrong turn in our grasp of its political significance. Thus, while we might find it hard not to be put off by the toxicity of today’s “call out culture,” Moran would remind us that the Black Power Movements who first embraced the concept of identity in the 1960s, did not have an essentializing approach to it. That is, that they didn’t see their struggle to secure recognition for their groups in the public sphere as an end in itself (EDIT: Marie has since written me an email asking me to clarify that her position is that identity is "invariably" essentializing "and by definition does" essentialize. I hope the listener/reader will understand my point here, however, which is to follow Marie's own argument that not all identity struggles are carried out for the sake of identity, only). So, this is going to be one of the big topics in the interview you’re about to hear — what it means to essentialize identity, and the linkages between today’s identity mania, and capitalism’s culture of self. Towards the end, we get into a good discussion of the similarities and differences between Marie’s approach to the topic, and those presented by Asad Haider in his new book, ‘Mistaken Identity’ (we posted on this, last week). There’s been a lot of controversy about the book online, but I think you’ll find Marie’s take to be pretty thoughtful. On a final note, I just want to apologize for the poor audio quality in this interview — due to unforeseen circumstances, we ended up having to record this interview in Skype. I’ve done my best to clean it up, but you’ll definitely hear some echo on the line. Its a shame, but stick with us - this is a really fascinating interview. Marie is a very careful and precise scholar. And I think you’ll agree that she’s making an important contribution to this debate.
Raven Rakia, a journalist with The Appeal, on the nationwide prison strike (more here and here). Then, Asad Haider, author of Mistaken Identity, on race and class.

The SESTA/FOSTA law purportedly aims to curb sex trafficking. But as my guest Melissa Gira Grant explains, it actually denies sex workers access to online platforms to more safely conduct their business. It received just two "no" votes in the Senate: from Rand Paul and Ron Wyden. It's a problem of hegemony: prohibition has long been plain common sense. So, it's our job to change that. The first step is to make it clear that there is dissent, and that prohibition is self-evidently neither good policy nor good politics. Live recording of The Dig coming up in New York City. Janus was an entirely expected and atrocious decision. The conservative business interests that successfully obliterated private sector unions hope it will do the same to their public sector counterparts. Chris Maisano, a contributing editor at Jacobin, argues that labor has no choice but to return to its militant roots if it hopes to survive. In other words, to survive, labor has to fight for a lot more than mere survival. Thanks to Verso Books. Checking your privilege. Invisible knapsacks. Intersectionality. In his new book from Verso, Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump, Asad Haider questions the terms and concepts that underpin much liberal and left conversation about race and racism, exploring critiques advanced by the black radical tradition to mount a thoroughgoing demolition of what we now refer to as "identity politics" — something that had a quite different meaning when it was first coined by the black, radical lesbian feminists of the Combahee River Collective. This is not a book that dismisses racism and sexism. Quite to the contrary. Haider shows that we can only confront and defeat oppressions like racism and sexism if we recognize their relationship to the capitalist exploitation of the working class as a whole. The corollary is also true: capitalism can never be defeated without recognizing and fighting the various oppressions that help sustain it. Thanks to Verso Books. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's victory should make New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a larger-than-life bully and ideologically-chameleon Democrat, very afraid. He faces a challenge from Dan's guest today, Cynthia Nixon, who has spent the years after her time on Sex in the City organizing for public education. After what happened to Joe Crowley, the left is more energized than ever. And what once appeared to be a long-shot attack on the king of New York politics now appears like it might just hit its target. This is the second episode in this week's super series on left electoral politics in the wake of Ocasio-Cortez's stunning win. Thanks to Verso. Leftist Andrés Manuel López Obrador, or AMLO, won an overwhelming victory in Mexico's presidential election, shattering a corrupt, old party system that brought ordinary Mexicans rampant violence and economic immiseration. But AMLO faces powerful political and economic constraints once in office—including some of his own making. Dan's guest is Christy Thornton, a professor of sociology and Latin American studies at Johns Hopkins. During the last week, she was an election observer for the Scholar and Citizen Network for Democracy in Mexico. Thanks to Verso. Stephen Wertheim, a Lecturer in American and international history at Birkbeck, University of London, breaks cuts through the suffocating foreign policy debate that shapes American Empire under Trump. Peace has broken out across the Korean Peninsula—or, at least, the odds that Donald Trump will blow the world up have gone down a just a bit—at least temporarily. Yes, Trump is the one who pushed us way too close to the brink of nuclear war. And yes, he likely sought peace with Kim Jong-Un because he loves wins, whatever their political or ideological content. But wow, has the liberal reaction been revealing. According to the mindset that pervades the liberal media and political elite, a move toward peace with North Korea is bad because Trump is bad. Or perhaps worse yet, it's bad because the national security state conventional wisdom that has governed Washington under both parties for so long—purveyed by the very people who have brought us endless war almost everywhere—says that it's bad. It's clearer than ever that the task of the left to find a way out of this ideological closed circuit of the liberal vs. Trump foreign policy debate—and, if we win power, to shut down its warmongering for good. David Harvey has taught Capital to huge numbers of people. Dan interviews him about his latest book, Marx, Capital and the Madness of Economic Reason. Harvey explains why he thinks all three volumes are of Capital are key, why we’re still living under neoliberalism at least unless and until ethnonationalist autarchy pushes it aside, how capitalism might survive climate change via mass immiseration, and linking struggles over production and consumption in the fight to transform society toward socialism. And more. Thanks to Verso. Check out Mistaken Identity: Race and Class in the Age of Trump by Asad Haider versobooks.com/books/2716-mistaken-identity.
