I never imagined loving stories taking place in Kansas, but in the last few years, many of my favorites have been set there, including Amanda Wen's Segewick Chronicles. She has a new book, The Rhythm of Fractured Grace. Listen in to see why. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. How a Broken Violin Ties Together Two Centuries  One of the best things about Amanda Wen's books is how she ties together history and the present and while using tidbits of her own family's history.  In The Rhythm of Fractured Grace, the family farmhouse is still included as well as the story of an ancestor who survived a scalping! You'll find a story steeped in the necessity of forgiveness in life. The Rhythm of Fractured Grace by Amanda Wen Is Siobhan too far gone to respond to the song of a God who's calling her back to him? When a new customer brings a badly damaged violin into Siobhan Walsh's shop, it is exactly the sort of challenge she craves. The man who brought it in is not. He's too close to the painful past that left her heart and her faith in shambles. Matt Buchanan has had a rough start as the new worship pastor. A car accident on his way into town left him with a nearly totaled truck, and an heirloom violin in pieces. When he takes it to a repair shop, he's fascinated with the restoration process--and with the edgy, closed-off woman doing the work. As their friendship deepens and turns into more, they both discover secrets that force them to face past wounds. And the history of the violin reveals more about their current problems than they could have ever expected. On the nineteenth-century frontier, a gruesome tomahawk attack wiped out most of Deborah Caldwell's family. Her greatest solace after the tragedy is the music from her father's prized violin. Given her horrendous scars, she'd resigned herself to a spinster's life. But Levi Martinson's gentle love starts to chip away at her hardened heart, until devastating details about the attack are revealed, putting their love--and Deborah's shaky faith--to the ultimate test. Full of forgiveness and the message that no one is too damaged for God's healing touch, the final book in the split-time Sedgwick County Chronicles will thrill fans of Rachel Hauck, Lisa Wingate, and Kristy Cambron. We're all busy but we're not happy: A discussion on the realities of lockdown working

This week we're talking around the idea that during lockdown we all seem to be super busy- but it’s not much fun! There seems to be a relentless nature to working from home that many hadn’t expected. In this podcast, we explore whether this repetitive, somewhat joyless for some, way of working can be avoided and discuss the impact it is having on PR teams. On the show this week are Jackie Elliott, chairman of Cathcart Consulting, Louie Sinclair, CEO of Harvard and Matt Buchanan, head of PR and Influence at Ogilvy UK.Thank you so much to the podcast sponsors, the PRCA.If you haven't taken a look yet, here are all the categories for the PRmoment Awards 2021.Here’s a flavour of what we discussed: 02.00 mins Work-wise, are the panel busy but not particularly happy?04.00 mins Why it’s been a tough time to be a leader in PR: “It’s much harder leading through technology.”04.45 mins The practice of public relations thrives on human connections, how much harder is PR when we’re not all together?06.15 mins “Everything has become an appointment.” There’s an absence of spontaneity. 08.00 mins Why we miss those “happy accidents” of agency life.09.30 mins What processes and schemes have been most successful to try and minimise the negative effects of working alone?11.00 mins Why people have found the lockdown “tougher this time around.”14.00 mins When we return to a normal working environment “we will need to re-look at the boundaries between work and home (life)”.15.00 mins Who on the panel has never taken part in a Zoom quiz!18.00 mins Ogilvy found it was employees in their 40s who were keener to return to the office, rather than their younger employees.20.00 mins The younger generation want work to “revolve around life rather than the other way around...and there have been some benefits of lockdown for that.”22.00 mins The 8.30 - 6.30, five days a week in the office is over. It’s done. After years of PR agencies (mainly) paying lip service, it changed forever, in one day.23.00 mins Bearing in mind ongoing social distancing requirements, to what extent do the panel anticipate office capacity issues when the PR world returns to offices? And are office spaces going to need to be re-designed?25.00 mins Most agencies seem to be planning a 3:2 scheme, 3 days in the office, 2 days at home.27.00 mins Does the agency leadership still need to be in the office full time?30.00 mins What are the cultural implications of a long term shift to remote working? “It has to have an impact doesn’t it?”33.00 mins When onboarding people remotely - how do you avoid the situation where the onboarding process is led by the IT team?!34.00 mins Why last year Harvard CEO Louie St Clare became, perhaps, the UK's best-paid white van man (for a day!).35.00 mins “The longer this goes on, the harder it will be to come back and have the same culture you left with.”36.00 mins Is the panel surprised that the PR world is quite as busy as it is at the moment?38.00 mins Why clients have become more demanding during lockdown.40.00 mins Why many PR agency/client partnerships are stronger than they have ever been.40.00 mins PR has, in the main, had a good lockdown but will it be able to retain its advantage over its marketing peers? “We’ll try but it will be different. When you come out of a war, you embrace the peace.”42.00 mins Has remote working and the loneliness of it changed the type of work coming out of creative agencies?

In this episode of Stuck@Om my friend Matt Buchanan (Executive Editor at Eater.com) joins me for a conversation surrounding the restaurant industry. Matt points out that there are approximately 12 million jobs in the foodservice industry. Of the 10 million people who've now filed for unemployment — many were likely from this sector. Dining rooms across the country are forcefully emptied, leaving many restaurants closing their doors.  Matt believes that takeout and delivery aren't sufficient to cover the overhead for most restaurants. If they don't get the help they need, there won't be a recognizable restaurant industry when we emerge from this pandemic. There may soon be a trickle-down effect as waiters, cooks, busboys, and delivery drivers are laid off. Will farmers be impacted due to a lack of demand? And what about the streak of racism becoming rampant as we see an immense drop in Chinese restaurants being frequented?  There will also be a long-term physical and psychological impact from the Coronavirus. Will people feel comfortable—even safe—returning to restaurants like they used to? We are in the midst of a humanitarian crisis that feels surreal — how do we humanize the lives being lost if we aren't directly impacted? These are just a few of the many topics that Matt and I talk about. Listen to hear our full conversation about the resounding economic impact the restaurant industry has in our culture.  {{{{{{{{{{{{{{PLAYER EMBED CODE GOES HERE}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}}} Subscribe to THE OM SHOW Outline of This Episode How restaurants are dealing with the pandemic  The recession will have continuing effects for months How Eater.com has been navigating the Coronavirus We must support our local businesses and restaurants How do we humanize the lives being lost? Classroom 2.0 LIVE webinar, "Quantifying Student's Progress with Teacher Rubric" with special guest presenter, Matt Buchanan, October 29, 2016. Matt Buchanan joined us to share an amazing Google add-on he has created for teachers and students called OrangeSlice. Matt recognized that Google Docs and Classroom were fantastic tools to develop his students' literacy and writing skills. However, the efficient process seemed to disappear when it was time to grade and present the final grade in a professional format. This inspired him to create a Google Add-on: OrangeSlice Teacher Rubric. It dramatically speeds the grading time, presents the grade in a professional format and creates more time to provide students constructive feedback. During his presentation, Matt will demonstrate how to use the OrangeSlice Teacher Rubric to quantify a student's growth over an assignment. He’ll explain the key rubric categories, demonstrate how a teacher and student work together during the student's progress towards, and finally completing the assignment. Teacher Rubric captures the communication between the two and presents it in a professional manner which is easy to follow. When the teacher 'Processes the Grade' for the final time, the conclusion yields a Student Growth Table which includes each rubric category and a clear, color-coded score breakdown of the student's progress. Matt Buchanan graduated from Purdue University during the latter part of the last millennium with a BS in mechanical engineering. For the following 15+ years, he held various engineering and sales positions in the automotive and heavy truck industries and obtained 3 U.S. patents. He completed a transition to teaching program in 2011 and began teaching 4th grade followed by middle school science. Finally, he landed a permanent teaching position in northeast Indiana teaching high school science: earth science, physics and AP environmental science. His time spent in elementary education rooted his pedagogy in literacy. Rubrics are a fast and effective method to evaluate and provide direct, student feedback which led to the development and release of the OrangeSlice:Teacher Rubric and Student Rubric add-ons. https://plus.google.com/u/0/114118124295389124507 https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/orangeslice-teacher-rubri/hfbffoacepkeklpippgijnoemfmiondo?hl=en-US
