Don't say the name of this episode out loud! Kat and James get their goth on and tackle these two Tim Burton comedies separated by 36 years yet so eerily similar. Like the ghost, this episode has the most as they discuss the cultural impact of Lydia Deetz and goth subculture, the movie's skewed view of the afterlife, and the extremes of non-belief regarding spirits versus an unhealthy interest in them. After a long long week of activity in Chicago, our friends Sarah Levin (Secular Strategies) and Hemant Mehta (Friendly Atheist), graciously agreed to connect for an exclusive conversation for Unreasonable listeners, recapping what they saw and heard at the Democratic National Convention, especially from a secular perspective, since over 30 percent of the Democratic party is non-religious.There was a lot of god talk coming from the podium. And we get it: Democrats have the opportunity to draw in people of faith who've finally had it with their anti-Christ candidate. How many of those people actually exist? Who knows, but in this game of inches it behooves us to invite them to the party and feel welcome. As they should: honest people of faith do, for the most part, share the social and moral values of secular voters. And though there's still work to be done, tremendous strides have been taken by the party to acknowledge their reliable None voters. Sarah and Hemant walk us through them on this special DNC episode of Unreasonable.Support the Show. Thanks for listening! Now follow us on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook and Threads. Welcome to Episode 43 of the QR Lab Podcast, where we dive deep into one of the most profound and contentious topics: the nature of belief and non-belief. In this episode, we shed light on atheism, exploring the perspectives of belief versus non-belief from multiple angles and dimensions. Is it more fantastical to believe in a creator, or does atheism require an even greater leap of faith? We critically assess the veracity and potential absurdities of both viewpoints, questioning what it truly means to believe in nothing—or to embrace a position of atheism. Join us as we navigate the philosophical terrain between faith and skepticism, examining whether it is belief in a higher power or non-belief that demands more from us. This episode isn't just about the clash of ideas; it's about understanding the underlying reasons that drive people toward belief or non-belief, and what those choices say about the human condition. Dr. Stephen Napier returns to Philosophy for the People to discuss his recent publication in response to the problem of divine hiddenness: Is There Non-Resistant Non-Belief? https://www.cambridge.org/core/journals/religious-studies/article/is-there-nonresistant-nonbelief/21F4527C7306B350D49B46E2CB8BDDD0 PS - Sorry for the "beeping" noise throughout. Is what it is.
Welcome back to the Hiddenness Series. In the last episode, we looked at Schellenberg's concept of a nonresistant nonbeliever which plays a central role in his argument from Divine Hiddenness. To refresh, somebody is a nonresistant nonbeliever if they (1) fail to believe that God exists and (2) that failure is not the result of their resistance to God. We also looked at the concept of resistance at play here and we saw that it included a desire component in conjunction with actions or omissions driven by that desire. Certain desire/action/omission combinations, if expressed by a person could conceivably cause that person to fail to believe that God exists even though they did believe to begin with. Some form of Self-deception would have to be at play here. Schellenberg calls such persons resistant nonbelievers and, according to the Hiddenness argument, if a perfectly loving God exists, resisters are the only type of nonbeliever that could exist. However, Schellenberg claims resistant nonbelievers are not the only type of nonbelievers that exist. According to him, some nonbelievers are nonresistant. His argument requires this. But is he correct? Lets take a look.
John Lennox is a mathematician and bioethicist at Oxford University, where he is a Professor of Mathematics. He has spoken internationally and written many books on the intersection of science and philosophy and religion. His latest book, 2084: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Humanity, came out in 2020. While most of us here at Rector's Cupboard have had fraught relationship with what has been called “apologetics,” we are pleased to welcome Professor Lennox as a guest. The discussion took place on a visit to Oxford. We speak about artificial intelligence, about John Lennox's public engagement (discussions, debates) with various neo-atheists, including Richard Dawkins, and we address the larger question of the role of apologetics in faith and belief. You can find more information about John Lennox's publications, debates, and other resources he has made on his website. Books referenced in this episode: Bittersweet - Susan Cain

Atheism is fairly new concept, emerging during the Enlightenment of the 18th century. What is it? Are there different kinds of atheists like different kinds of Christianity, Buddhism, Muslims, etc.? What are they?
Back in their high school days, Austin and Trebor were the victims of intense bullying. Suffice to say, they're still not over it. The Beautiful Boys trash talk their decades-long rivals, come to terms with the death of their loved ones, and describe their less-than-stellar relationships with religion on an all-new episode of The Ice Cream Sunday Podcast.

In Romans 1:18-20 (NASB), Paul writes, "For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of people who suppress truth in unrighteousness, because that which is known about God is evident within them; for God made it evident to them. For since the creation of the world, His invisible attributes, that is, His eternal power and divine nature have been clearly perceived, being understood by what has been made, so that they are without excuse." Does this text mean every single non-believer is resistant in their non-belief? In this video, Dr. Rauser provides several reasons to think the answer is no. Please consider supporting me on Patreon. This past spring, USCIRF staff traveled to Turkey and met with religious and nonbelief communities across the country. Numerous issues continue to negatively impact their freedom of religion or belief, including an inability to train clergy, mandatory religion classes, the threat of blasphemy charges, and other forms of discrimination. USCIRF has monitored and reported on Turkey since the late 2000s, recommending it for placement on the Special Watch List (previously known as Tier 2) every year since 2014 and most recently again in USCIRF's 2022 Annual Report. Senior Policy Analyst Keely Bakken, who was part of that USCIRF delegation to Turkey, joins us today to discuss some of the findings of that trip as well as USCIRF's recent policy recommendations.Read USCIRF's 2022 Annual Report Chapter on TurkeyListen to USCIRF's Spotlight Podcast Episode Sivas Massacre and Turkey's Persecution of the Alevi CommunityListen to USCIRF's Spotlight Podcast Episode 50 Years and Counting: The Continued Closure of Halki Seminary in TurkeyWith Contributions from: Dwight Bashir, Director of Outreach and Policy, USCIRFKeely Bakken, Senior Policy Analyst, USCIRFDylan Schexnaydre, Victims List and Outreach Specialist, USCIRF

Jesus warns us that if we are not careful and don't acknowledge and step into his blessing we will get “cut off”. For refusing God's blessings you are risking. The only thing that stands between you and your blessing is your NON-BELIEF! You're either going to believe that God is the provider and that we can never earn anything on us OR you're going to be blaming people for the absence of your belief. Unbelief attracts other unbelief! WHO ARE YOU LEANING ON? Dysfunctional behavior, and belief will want us to “lean” on dysfunction FAITH HAS NO REGARD TO STATUS: Faith teaches us to be on the move, Faith always translates into works. UNBELIEF WAS IN THE GATES OF FREEDOM Who or what have you put in charge of your gates? Small mindedness Past experiences (offences) Other people's expectations The only thing that's separating you from your blessing is your unbelief!! No man, no schemes, no deceit, no limitations, no curriculum – ONLY YOU If you're experiencing a spiritual siege, it's not because of somebody else's fault. Shake off UNBELIEF, “step in” & claim your blessings; Acknowledge that God wants to bless you (regardless of your status) Feed your faith GO – ACT on God's word
In this episode, we begin a series (of 3 episodes) exploring the intersection of 'God' and morality. You'll note the use of quotation marks, this is because we explore the moral implications of theism and organized religion in a way that is not limited to faith-based belief. This means both looking purely at the incentives around belief rather than basing belief on faith, but also weighing up the pros and cons of organized religion and their impact on society. Did it help to instill moral norms and unity, or more act as a basis for persecution, subjugation and undue docility. We begin by assessing some of the classic arguments for either believing or not believing in god, drawing inspiration all the way from the Ancient Greece to Dostoevsky. Next we'll consider whether religion (irrespective of god's existence) has been a net good for humanity, and finally what the moral basis for god's morality could be (an appeal to authority, the definition of what is moral or something else entirely). Dr. Juhem Navarro-Rivera studies people like him – atheists, agnostics, “Nones” and other non-believers of color. He says non-believers of color have extra challenges in “coming out”.
More Australians than ever before are saying 'no' to religion, and 'yes' to secular beliefs such as atheism. Yet, the majority of the population still identifies with a religion. On God Forbid, James Carleton and the panel examine atheism, disbelief and what we really mean by 'religion'.
Coming out as a non-believer to friends and family can be terrifying, it invites judgement and criticism from people who care about you. In this RfRx talk, Erin Louis will share her own experiences in confronting the unfounded stereotypes and stigmas of being a former adult entertainer and how similar those experiences are to being an out-of-the-closet atheist. We'll cover the various beliefs and non-beliefs of non-believers, share tips on identifying those stereotypes, and discuss how and when to come out of the closet. Erin Louis is a former adult entertainer and a present-day author. She has written 3 non-fiction books about her life as a stripper and several short fiction stories. "You do not believe - you only believe that you believe." (Samuel Taylor Coleridge, author "Rime of the Ancient Mariner". ) Human-centric belief systems litter the landscape of our planetary experience. As with most things, now is an excellent time to release what no longer serves you. Animals embrace duality in all moments and in so doing, unity itself is revealed. Less is always more.
In this chat, we try to address the journey of disbelief in India. Is disbelief a problem? Can believers and disbelievers get along? If yes what are the parameters? Should disbelievers leave religion alone and utter nothing about it? Is the criticism that disbelievers don't have skin in the game and hence they should not comment on religion fair? On the other hand, is militant atheism really the correct way to talk about religious problems? Other fun topics we touch on include the book “The Heart of the Artist” that Blake had to read when he was on his church’s worship team, why the Christian practice of turning natural human behavior into deviancy is problematic, and why the religious right has been so powerful and effective. Brian Peck, Carolyn Golden, and James Connelly explore how beliefs impact the deconversion process and create challenges for relationships. This episode is part two of a conversation recorded on March 13, 2018. You can listen to part one here:http://www.lifeaftergod.org/059-how-and-why-we-believe-part-1/or read the transcript here:https://www.roomtothrive.com/blog/2018/3/24/how-and-why-we-believeIn this episode, James talks about going through a deconversion when your partner is still a believer. Mixed-faith relationships are common and can be maintained but they often test the strongest of bonds as a couple renegotiates the essential elements of their relationship.By focusing on HOW we believe we can more easily unite around the shared human experience of living with a believing brain. Of course, WHAT we believe will continue to be important but perhaps understanding the HOW and WHY will allow us to relax our grip a little bit on the WHAT.In addition to discussing how divergent beliefs impact relationships, the guests offer practical things you can do to support more meaningful human connections._____Brian Peck, LCSW is a clinical social worker who specializes in religious-based trauma in his private practice and guides individuals through their deconversions with evidence-based practices online. Brian loves discovering and adopting new and healthier ways to be human on the other side of religious belief.Carolyn Golden, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist, who, in addition to her clinical practice, teaches psychology at Boise State University. Carolyn’s interest in how we create and maintain beliefs resulted in her developing and teaching The Psychology of Belief.James Connelly, Psy.D. is a clinical psychologist with and an infectious curiosity about how our brains work and a fascination with WHY and HOW we believe. James is currently writing a book in which he explores the psychology of religious belief through the lens of his LDS background.LINKSRoom to Thrive | https://www.roomtothrive.com

Atheism is a matter of belief, or more accurately, a matter of non-belief. An atheist does not believe in god or gods. But there are some atheists, myself included, that take things at step further. I believe gods do not exist. Some people call this positive statement "strong atheism." Some say it is unnecessary, and places a burden of proof on the atheist that should not be there. I'll give my perspective on this, and how it has changed. I'l talk about what exactly I believe and why. Plus your calls. I believe the awesome sause will flow. Prove me right!
On this Father's Day, let's talk about how God ranks as a father. Let's talk about the parenting advice given in the bible. The awesomeness will be with us. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bar-Room-Atheist/491533774246367

Nonbelief relief for Haiti and the biblical roots of Islamist brutality toward rape victims will be discussed. Guest Jerry Coyne is professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolution at the University of Chicago, where he speciallizes in evolutionary genetics. His new book, Why Evolution is True, has been much praised by Richard Dawkins, next week's guest!
Taner Edis, born and raised in Turkey, is associate professor of physics at Truman State University and the author of The Ghost in the Universe: God in Light of Modern Science and Science and Non-belief, among other publications. His latest book is An Illusion of Harmony: Science and Religion in Islam. In this conversation with D.J. Grothe, Taner Edis explains reasons he thinks religion persists, and explores the complex relationship between science and nonbelief, detailing how the institutional interests of science may prevent some in the science community from working to diminish religion, the New Atheists excepted. He talks about how scientific theories are often misused by paranormalists or supernaturalists to advance their cultural position, focusing on the New Age movement's use of quantum physics and on the intelligent design movement. He examines differences between science and pseudoscience, arguing that often it is not possible to demarcate what is uniquely science. And he surveys various scientific approaches of examining religion, such as rational choice theory, the secularization hypothesis, and various evolutionary approaches, such as group selection theory, the byproduct theory of religion, and memetic approaches (that religion is a "virus of the mind").
