Julia Lester brings heart, humor, and honesty to this deep-dive into her journey from a theatre-loving kid in LA to a Tony-nominated Broadway star. She talks about growing up surrounded by performers, how Into the Woods became a defining chapter in her career, and the surreal moment when Stephen Sondheim personally approved her audition tape. Julia also shares the backstage magic of working with legends like Phillipa Soo and Gavin Creel, and how those experiences shaped her as both an artist and collaborator. Currently starring in the Off-Broadway play All Nighter, Julia reflects on the thrill of originating a role, her love of well-crafted comedy, and why staying true to the text is so important to her process. She also opens up about her identity as a queer woman, her hopes for future creative opportunities, and what it's been like stepping into the world of television again — this time as Steve Carell's daughter in Netflix's upcoming The Four Seasons. Julia Lester is a Tony-nominated actress best known for her breakout Broadway role as Little Red in Into the Woods. She starred as Ashlyn Caswell in all four seasons of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series on Disney+, appeared in Hulu's Prom Dates, and recently performed in I Can Get It for You Wholesale at Classic Stage Company. She's now starring Off-Broadway in All Nighter and appears in Netflix's The Four Seasons alongside Steve Carell and Tina Fey. This summer San Diego's Old Globe became one of only 10 theaters in America who have produced all of Shakespeare's plays (or 11, depending on how you count it) with their production of Henry VI, parts 1, 2, and 3. Artistic Director Barry Edelstein shares the details of how they tackled staging three rarely seen works with more than 150 characters, and condensed it into two exciting nights of theater. The epic production includes contributions from nearly a thousand San Diegans, many of whom have participated in the Globe's community programs. Edelstein, the Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director of The Old Globe, is one of America's most experienced Shakespeare directors and has staged more than half the canon himself. Before joining the Globe in 2012, he directed the Public Theatre's Shakespeare Initiative and was the artistic director for Classic Stage Company in New York City. He is the author of Thinking Shakespeare about American Shakespearean acting and Bardisms: Shakespeare for All Occasions. Henry 6 runs through September 14 and 15, 2024 at the Globe in San Diego, California. For tickets and more information, visit https://www.theoldglobe.org. From the Shakespeare Unlimited podcast. It's 2024 and we're back with an Off-Broadway highlights episode, showcasing two shows we saw last fall: Sondheim's last musical, Here We Are, and a revival from Classic Stage Company of I Can Get It for You Wholesale! Note that there are spoilers for both shows in this episode. — ICYMI: The Frank Rich piece on Vulture explains how Sondheim's last musical finally came to be on stage. There are a couple of interviews that have been particularly interesting, featuring members of the Here We Are cast, which you can hear on NPR and WNYC. While Here We Are is based on two Buñuel films, two other films came to mind that seemed to fit in a similar vein: Bottoms and Triangle of Sadness. One of the greatest parts of seeing a show at Classic Stage Company is their in-depth show guide, which provides a lot of historical context about when the show was set and some dramaturgical points of interest. I Can Get It for You Wholesale is actually licensed by Concord Theatricals, and you can see a full synopsis of the show on their site (and see some of the differences from the revisions made by John Weidman in this production). You can also check out this interview with Theatermania where Weidman talks about his process. In keeping with the Sondheim tie-in, check out Lindsay Mendez performing Who Knows? -- Music featured in this episode: Snippets for Here We Are from the WNYC feature. A dynamic and versatile performer, over the span of his career he's earned standout reviews from outlets such as the LA Times, the Washington Post, Entertainment Weekly, and The New York Times, excelling in a variety of genres—from Shakespeare to comedy to musical theatre. He's appeared Off-Broadway in multiple critically-acclaimed productions--including most recently the Classic Stage Company's smash revival of “Carmen Jones”, where he starred opposite 2-time Tony Award-winner Anika Noni Rose—and starred on Broadway in the beloved British comedy “The Play that Goes Wrong”, co-produced by JJ Abrams. You also may have seen him guest starring for programs on Starz, Fox, NBC, and CBS (where he geeked out because he got to do a bunch of scenes with Scott Bakula on CSI: New Orleans!).
