And the problem with that approach, she explains, is simple — those scores were collected in January or February, and by the time you receive them, your student has been acquiring language every single day. The score is a photograph of someone who has already grown. Waiting for ACCESS scores to plan instruction, she says, is like driving while only looking in the rearview mirror.The heart of the episode is a practical, domain-by-domain framework for intentional observation that teachers can start using immediately. Beth begins with listening — a domain she identifies as the most powerful predictor of success across all other domains and one that is often skipped because it feels harder to observe. She gives concrete signals to watch for: whether a student can follow multi-step directions without looking at a peer, whether they can respond accurately to comprehension questions, whether they laugh at jokes and understand social context, whether they can follow a lesson without visuals. She also introduces a practical tool that many teachers overlook — the three-sentence dictation — which simultaneously reveals listening comprehension, sound-letter connections from reading instruction, and writing development in one simple activity.Speaking observation is about more than whether a student talks. Beth walks through specific indicators: Are they using complete sentences or single words? Spontaneous language or only when asked? Can they explain their thinking or only describe what they see? Are they using academic vocabulary or only conversational language? Are they self-correcting or attempting complex structures? Each indicator maps directly to a specific instructional response.Reading observation, Beth emphasizes, must go beyond decoding. A student who can read fluently but cannot tell you what the text was about is not a proficient reader — they are a decoder. She has seen this frequently with multilingual learners and stresses the importance of observing comprehension separately from fluency, because the instruction needed is completely different.Writing gives teachers the most permanent record of language development. Beth guides teachers through what to look for: sentence completeness, punctuation, academic versus conversational vocabulary, paragraph organization, planning and graphic organizer use, sentence variety, and whether errors are consistent or random. Consistent errors — like missing articles — are actually good news. They show exactly what the student is working on acquiring and tell you precisely what to address next.The episode then addresses the practical reality of observing 30 students across four domains. Beth's solution is elegant: pick one domain per week. Focus your observation lens entirely on that domain for all your students, then shift the following week. Over four weeks you have current data across all four domains for every student — far more useful, specific, and actionable than any annual test score.  Welcome to the WAB Podcast! In this episode, Kevin Crouch, WAB's Head of EdTech, IT, and Libraries, sat down with three students, Ville from Grade 5, Sophie and Ciara from Grade 7, along with Middle School Principal Marina Frias-Gavidia, to discuss the exciting rollout of Toddle in Middle School next school year. They also talked about how it can facilitate student learning, increase student agency, and incorporate AI-powered support.  Why Toddle?  For the past four years, Toddle has been a cornerstone of learning in the Elementary School, streamlining everything from lesson planning to student portfolios. Now, it's expanding to Middle School, bringing its all-in-one platform to older students.  As Kevin explained, Toddle unites the entire learning process—teachers can plan, assess, and report in one place, while students gain more ownership of their learning through digital portfolios. Unlike Teams or other platforms, Toddle keeps everything connected, ensuring that learning goals, assignments, and feedback stay aligned.  What Students Love About Toddle  Grade 5 student Ville has been a Toddle user for many years, and he highlighted its functions and flexibility:   Rubrics help students self-assess and improve their work.  The Portfolio lets students showcase learning anytime, not just when teachers assign tasks.  Toddle AI acts as a creative assistant, helping brainstorm project ideas.  For Middle Schoolers like Sophie and Ciara, the move to Toddle will mean better organization across their eight subjects.    New Features for Middle School  Kevin pointed out that Toddle has also evolved since some Middle School students last used it. Exciting updates include:  AI-powered tutoring: Students can get instant feedback and practice at their own pace.  Adaptive "Worksheets": Like Education Perfect, but integrated directly into Toddle.  Parent access: While daily classwork stays private, parents can see assignments, feedback, and portfolio posts.  Marina emphasized that Toddle supports personalized learning, whether a student needs extra practice or is ready to advance.  What About Teams?  Sophie and Ciara also wondered whether Teams will still be used. Library professionals have long made use of evaluative tools for decision-making around collection development. Traditional tools are adequate for many collection development scenarios, but the increasing variety of acquisitions models, combined with entrenched budgetary challenges, present the need for new methods and inventive thinking. Enter the rubric! If you thought rubrics were stuffy or excessive, or only used to grade college essays, it's time to take another look. Rubrics are not only instruments of collection analysis, but informative objects that help guide their own values and philosophies in their collection's practices. These four librarians from the George A. Smathers Libraries at the University of Florida have been exploring the use of rubrics for collection development. They'll share two rubrics currently in use. One designed for open access investments and another for monograph purchasing decisions. They'll also share stories about the birth of the rubrics and impart practical, ground-floor applications of the rubrics through real-world examples, giving ideas for evaluating collections decisions in a unique and collaborative way, helping Publishers and vendors to strengthen their understanding of what these library partners value and prioritize. In this episode of On Mission, Chris Pierno, Kate Fowler, and Fr. Frank Donio, S.A.C. are joined by Fr. Jim Sabak, O.F.M., Director of Worship for the Diocese of Raleigh, North Carolina, to discuss the Easter Vigil Liturgy, the Vigil's symbolism, and Easter traditions. The rubrics of the Missale Romanum remind us that this "mother of all vigils" is the "greatest and most noble of all solemnities and it is to be unique in every single Church" ( Missale Romanum, "Rubrics for the Easter Vigil" (EV), no.2). On this holy night, the Church keeps watch, celebrating the resurrection of Christ in the sacraments and awaiting his return in glory. It is the turning point of the Triduum, the Passover of the new covenant, which marks Christ's passage from death to life. Therefore, the Easter Vigil does not correspond to the usual Saturday evening Mass and its character is unique in the cycle of the liturgical year.The Vigil, by its very nature, "ought to take place at night" (EV, no. 3). It is not begun before nightfall 1 and should end before daybreak on Easter Sunday. Education Headline RoundupHere are the school & learning headlines we cover in this week's episode of 16:1: Dartmouth College (a private, Ivy League research institution in New Hampshire) recently announced it will require SAT/ACT scores again for applicants starting with the class of 2029 (applies to applicants starting Fall 2025). This comes after the school temporarily made these scores optional in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. The decision was influenced by study findings suggesting that test-optional policies didn't increase enrollment of first-generation, low-income, or under-resourced students and that admissions offices were not able to confidently determine students' academic qualifications without relying on test scores. Dartmouth is the first Ivy League school to reinstate the test requirement. It remains to be seen if others will follow suit, though Harvard has said it will NOT require scores for applicants up until at least the class of 2030. The Union of Students in Ireland (USI) National Council passed a symbolic motion against the use of online proctoring software Proctorio on January 25th, 2024. The USI National Council unanimously passed the motion, which highlighted safety and ethics concerns as well as potential conflicts with the GDPR, Europe's expansive online privacy law. TCDSU cited examples of other institutions abandoning or curtailing the use of Proctorio due to its apparent ineffectiveness in preventing cheating. Student opposition to Proctorio in Ireland may influence other student unions and institutions to re-evaluate their use of the software.The newly relaunched Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process has introduced several issues impacting students and universities alike. Due to errors in calculating financial aid eligibility, the Department of Education announced on Jan 30th that FAFSA processing won't start until mid-March (when it is normally completed by the end of January), impacting financial aid offers for the 2024-25 academic year. This delay also affects some state financial aid forms that rely on FAFSA data for auto-population. Students in these states need to check individual deadlines and procedures. Users have reported issues with the school selection feature, including incomplete school names, duplicate entries for the same campus, and difficulties identifying the correct campus. Some parents attempting to start the application on behalf of their child have encountered errors preventing them from completing the form.Decoding Grades: From Marks to Mastery, and What Students Actually NeedGrading is a ubiquitous yet controversial element of formal schooling. This episode delves into the history and purpose of grades, highlighting traditional and alternative approaches while advocating for student empowerment. The grading system has undergone a long journey full of transformation, but questions linger about its true effectiveness in reflecting student learning. Every semester presents a mix of challenges and opportunities for both students and faculty. In this episode, Jenn Rose and JoAnn Edmond share five practical tips to help kickstart the semester on a strong note.  We discuss the importance of crafting a learner-centered syllabus and getting a jumpstart on integrating tools within the Learning Management System (LMS). Our conversation also touches on strategies for giving timely and meaningful feedback, with a focus on utilizing LMS tools for scheduled course communications.  Jenn and JoAnn highlight the usefulness of tools such as replace strings in personalizing messages for students, even when using a generic message for everyone. They also suggest considering the incorporation of rubrics in the LMS to clarify grading criteria and streamline the grading process. #118Join me on the podcast for a Leveling Up Coaching Episode.Do you have to balance common assessments with your proficiency-focused classroom?  Is this a bit of a challenge when those common assessments are not all that focus on proficiency and communication? Today's episode is a Leveling Up episode, where I coach Lisa, a French teacher in Michigan. Balancing common district assessments in a Proficiency-Focused Classroom  is the area where wants to level up her teaching practice. So let's start the conversation. Suggestions:Might have to be a both/and during these years of transition. Allow for this.Leave 1-2 days at the end of a unit to check in on the material that should be covered on the district common assessment. Any topics that were not covered during the unit can be quickly added on at the end so that students are prepared.Action Plan:This Week:Review the district assessments and analyze the proficiency objectives in your curriculum.
