As you already know, I am a fan of Christian fiction, and as a believer in Jesus Christ, I am compelled to support those authors and artists who are creating God-honoring content in a broken culture. My guest today is bestselling author Rachel Hauck who has been penning heartwarming and inspiring Christian Fiction for nearly thirty years. She's just released a novel that takes us back to the 80s! Lean in and listen as we get to know her. It's always encouraging and fun to chat with Rachel Hauck and this time we're all about roller skating rinks, memories, and the need for healing from disappointments and traumas.
Rachel Hauck is one of my dearest writing friends so it is always a treat to have her on Book Talk. I had such fun talking to her about her newest book Meet Me at the Starlight. We got all nostalgic about rollerskating and the place rollerskating rinks played in our growing-up years. Rachel's process is a little different than mine. She likes to just keep writing and trust that the story will reveal itself. I'm not that trusting I guess! With her books, she tends to write about the types of people that we don't normally interact with. Princesses. Singers. Actors. She wants to take us into the life we don't nomally live or look into. I think that's part of what we love. If she were to give advice to her younger writing self, it would be to know her process and know that she will hate the book at one point but that it will be good eventually. Don't get paralyzed there. Great advice for all of us! She also loves writing groups because writing is a solitary life and Rachel needs the water cooler time. She likes hearing about the business and staying up on trends. There's so much in this episode, y'all! Connect with Rachel Hauck Facebook | Instagram
I never imagined loving stories taking place in Kansas, but in the last few years, many of my favorites have been set there, including Amanda Wen's Segewick Chronicles. She has a new book, The Rhythm of Fractured Grace. Listen in to see why. note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. How a Broken Violin Ties Together Two Centuries One of the best things about Amanda Wen's books is how she ties together history and the present and while using tidbits of her own family's history. In The Rhythm of Fractured Grace, the family farmhouse is still included as well as the story of an ancestor who survived a scalping! You'll find a story steeped in the necessity of forgiveness in life. The Rhythm of Fractured Grace by Amanda Wen Is Siobhan too far gone to respond to the song of a God who's calling her back to him? When a new customer brings a badly damaged violin into Siobhan Walsh's shop, it is exactly the sort of challenge she craves. The man who brought it in is not. He's too close to the painful past that left her heart and her faith in shambles. Matt Buchanan has had a rough start as the new worship pastor. A car accident on his way into town left him with a nearly totaled truck, and an heirloom violin in pieces. When he takes it to a repair shop, he's fascinated with the restoration process--and with the edgy, closed-off woman doing the work. As their friendship deepens and turns into more, they both discover secrets that force them to face past wounds. And the history of the violin reveals more about their current problems than they could have ever expected. On the nineteenth-century frontier, a gruesome tomahawk attack wiped out most of Deborah Caldwell's family. Her greatest solace after the tragedy is the music from her father's prized violin. Given her horrendous scars, she'd resigned herself to a spinster's life. But Levi Martinson's gentle love starts to chip away at her hardened heart, until devastating details about the attack are revealed, putting their love--and Deborah's shaky faith--to the ultimate test. Full of forgiveness and the message that no one is too damaged for God's healing touch, the final book in the split-time Sedgwick County Chronicles will thrill fans of Rachel Hauck, Lisa Wingate, and Kristy Cambron. In this episode of Book Talk with Cara, I wanted to do something fun and different. I thought I'd show you some of my favorite authors. These are the ones whose books I preorder so that going to my mailbox feels like Christmas year-round. These authors are from a variety of genres and I always enjoy their books. If you're looking for a book recommendation, these authors are a great place to start: Bethany Turner: contemporary rom-com Pepper Basham: love them all but her current series are a blast Jen Turano: adore her fun Gilded Age historicals Rachel Hauck: always a good choice but love her supernatural fairy tales Becky Wade: the best contemporary romance Mary Connealy: western romances are always an enjoyable read Beth Vogt: so good Colleen Coble: the best romantic mysteries. Love them! Natalie Walter: SNAP agency series has been perfect! Sarah Sundin: the queen of WWII in my opinion right now. Kristy Cambron: also writes great WWII (even though I'm adding her as I type!) When I discovered I was talking with Rachel Hauck about her latest release, The Best Summer of Our Lives, I knew two things. First, I was going to have a great time getting to understand the woman behind such great books. Additionally, I would definitely be reading this book. What I didn't know (and should have suspected), was that her book (and a song)would become one of my favorites of the year. Listen in and see why. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you Why Am I So Impressed by The Best Summer of Our Lives? It could be that the book deals with so many things that we all understand. It might be that Rachel Hauck has, once again, laid bare the things that we like to pretend aren't a reality in our lives. Or perhaps it's "only" her masterful storytelling that makes each character not only feel real but feel like someone we've known all of our lives. Whatever it is, the way Hauck layered this story and then peeled back those layers shows excellent storytelling. And I'm not just saying that because she sent me a copy. Anyone who knows me knows I say what I think. So what do I think about the "come to Jesus" moment where "Jesus" is represented as a bell-bottom and oxford shirt wearing dude called The Preacher? I think it's awkward! It's uncomfortable. And it's exactly what this story needs to help us see that Jesus is real. He's personal. And He's calling for us in individual ways that we both understand and resonate with. But this is more than a great story. It's four great stories--or maybe four and a half. ;) And on top of it, Rachel even wrote and performed a song that goes with it. You can get that anywhere music is sold. I found it HERE and after our chat about music, I thought I'd let you know. I liked it. The Best Summer of Our Lives by Rachel Hauck Twenty years ago, the summer of '77 was supposed to be the best summer of Summer Wilde's life. She and her best friends, Spring, Autumn, and Snow--the Four Seasons--had big plans. But those plans never had a chance. After a teenage prank gone awry, the Seasons found themselves on a bus to Tumbleweed, "Nowhere," Oklahoma, to spend eight weeks as camp counselors. All four of them arrived with hidden secrets and buried fears, and the events that unfolded in those two months forever altered their friendships, their lives, and their futures. Now, thirtysomething, Summer is at a crossroads. When her latest girl band leaves her in a motel outside Tulsa, she is forced to face the shadows of her past. Returning to the place where everything changed, she soon learns Tumbleweed is more than a town she never wanted to see again. It's a place for healing, for reconciling the past with the present, and for finally listening to love's voice. You can find out more about Rachel on her WEBSITE. Follow her on GoodReads and BookBub. In Chapter 42 of the FamilyFiction Christian Fiction Bookshelf Podcast Rachel Hauck talks to us about her new Bethany House release 'The Best Summer of Our Lives.' The post Rachel Hauck | Christian Fiction Bookshelf Podcast – Chapter 42 appeared first on Family Fiction.
Summer is officially here! And we're helping you get started with an episode from one of the biggest names in inspirational fiction. Author Rachel Hauck joins us on the More to Life podcast to talk about her book, The Best Summer of Our Lives. This story, which takes place during the summer of '77, explores the topics of female friendships and reconciliation through four best friends, known as the Four Seasons. Rachel, who was also a teen in the '70s, tells us about the best summer of her life, how she finds her core community of friends now, and what it's like for a book to become a movie. As she says, things don't always go as expected, but those are the moments that bring us closer to God. To purchase a copy of Rachel's book, The Best Summer of Our Lives, stop by your local Christian bookstore or visit our online store mtl.christianbook.com by clicking here. Connecting with my friend Rachel Hauck is always a joy, and it's always a delight to have her on Book Talk. This episode is no different. When we hit record, you get to eavesdrop on our conversation about stories as art and characters as joy. Rachel starts with a theme but not necessarily a spiritual thread, that will come later. Then the story idea will hit her later. In the process, the big idea will hit. I also love that Rachel wants to introduce readers to a relationship with Jesus, not the church. Isn't that a cool distinction? The church is filled with people, and that means we will be let down and disappointed at some point in time. But Jesus is different. So very different. You'll enjoy this conversation and look behind the scenes into Rachel's next book the Best Summer of Our Lives. Sometimes you see a name everywhere and wonder why you haven't read a book by that author. Then you schedule an interview with said author and go, "WAIT! Why haven't I read this author???" Yeah, that's what happened with Amanda Wen, author of the recent release, The Songs that Could Have Been and the upcoming collection, O Little Town. Seriously, guys. I keep thinking I need to open a secondhand book shop to help defer the costs of all these books! Because I need these books!!! Listen in and see why I think Amanda Wen may be a new favorite author. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Who Knew Family History Could Inspire Wonderful, Heart-Wrenching Stories? Amanda Wen, author of the Sedgwick County Chronicles including Roots of Wood and Stone and The Songs that Could Have Been and "Book 3" (I agree... she needs a better title, but she assures us that Kregel is fabulous at naming her babies), takes family history and spins beautiful, heartwrenching tales of love and family from the holes in that history. I don't know if we're looking at a trilogy, a tetralogy, a pentalogy... (I vote for the latter), but I think (having only read the opening line of Songs) that I could read them indefinitely. Despite the love and romance in these novels, Amanda Wen's stories aren't light and fluffy. They deal with hard things--racial issues, church abuse, adoption, dementia... And all in a way that I'm chomping at the bit to read. Not to mention, audiobooks. There's audio. With what sounds like a good narrator AND the same narrator for both of the published works. EEEP! But that's not all Amanda writes... She does have a couple of romances. The first you can get if you sign up for her newsletter--a nice little Valentine's short story that I don't know about you but I don't want to miss (more about that later). The next in the upcoming novella collection, O Little Town with authors Janyre Tromp and Deborah Raney. Taking place in three different times, O Little Town features a fictional Michigan town with a rich Dutch heritage and its little schoolhouse. Back in Episode 66, we chatted with Lisa Phillips about her Last Chance County series and how much I LOVED that series. Well… now we have even more exciting news about the future of Last Chance County! Lisa Phillips has partnered with Sunrise Publishing to be a lead author in Season 5– a brand new multi-author series set in Last Chance County! Find out what's coming and how you or a friend can be mentored by Lisa and write in her fictional world! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Here's the Best Way to Get More from Your Favorite Author's Series AAAK! Where to begin. Sunrise authors, Susan May Warren, Rachel Hauck, Lynette Eason, Trisha Goyer, and now Lisa Phillips are investing in authors in an amazing and unique way. These authors are mentoring new and struggling writers as well as allowing those authors to write in their worlds! Contemporary romance, romantic suspense, Amish–they've got it all, and hey… successful authors? They have something for you, too! Because this isn't the end of Sunrise's plans! They didn't decide, “We'll do five seasons of these series and call it quits.” No, they're still accepting applications for lead authors, and this is good news for authors and readers alike! Why? Because we all have series we'd love to have more from, right? And while authors may want to write more from those worlds, that doesn't mean they can. It's a perfect blend. Like chocolate and peanut butter–peanut butter and jelly… um… and without any anaphylactic shock! What's in it for new authors? A great mentoring relationship with an expert author in that genre. A chance to write in a series you already love! Other new authors to bounce ideas off. The support of years of experience and success backing your project. A boosted resume And I'm sure there's a boatload more. What does it take to “audition?” You must have completed (not necessarily published but finished) a book. Submit 1500-2000 words of your current work in progress. Submit a couple of paragraphs about your idea for the series (more on this in a minute) And tell them a little about yourself! All author auditions have the identifying information stripped from their work so that those deciding on the best submissions have no idea whose they are looking at. Then, after the top ten or so are chosen, the lead author and Sunrise Publishing will look at who these people are to see if personalities etc. are a good fit for everyone. Right NOW auditions are open for romantic suspense writers to write in Lisa Phillips' Last Chance County! Through September 3, authors can submit their “auditions” for Sunrise Publishing's Series Five! HERE is a Facebook Live that talks all about how this works and all that jazz. And HERE is where you go to submit your “audition!” Lisa is being crazy generous with who she is looking for. She's not just looking for previously unpublished authors. No, Lisa is willing to consider someone with a stagnant backlist, someone who indie published a few books and just didn't know how to get them in front of the right readers, and more! She's really eager to help you learn the romantic suspense writing process and help you succeed. Are you a successful author in other genres? Sunrise Publishing is looking for you! You can go HERE to apply to be a LEAD AUTHOR! If you've ever wanted more from one of your series, ever thought you had something to offer up and coming authors but didn't know how to make their dreams a reality, this is a perfect opportunity. Seriously, I wish I had the following needed to do this because it's right up my alley! A format to help others become their best author selves? GENIUS! Sunrise Publishing hasn't said this, but I will. I hope authors in the following genres will definitely apply. Historical (Both the World War subgenres as well as historical in general!) Speculative fiction– think fantasy, sci-fi, steampunk… all that geniusness! Women's fiction (I'm looking at you Lindsey Harrell!) Romcom? Goodness, the list is endless! PLEASE, AUTHORS. APPLY today! The world needs these books, and these authors need the expertise you can offer! Readers! Send your favorite authors that link up there and beg them to apply to write more in your favorite series! You might just get more fabulous books out of it! DON'T FORGET! September 3, 2021 is the deadline!!! Like to listen on the go? You can find Because Fiction Podcast at: Apple Castbox Google Play Libsyn RSS Spotify Stitcher and more! If you'd like to be on the Because Fiction Podcast, please go HERE and submit your topic idea! I'd love to hear about it.

2019 was a banner year for set designer Rachel Hauck. Two of her designs were on Broadway in acclaimed productions: the Tony-nominated play “What the Constitution to Me” and the musical “Hadestown,” which not only won the Tony for Best Musical but also earned Rachel her first Tony for scenic design. The recognition came after almost three decades of consistent work in the theater, starting in her hometown of Los Angeles and then in regional theaters all over the country, from the renowned Oregon Shakespeare Festival, where she worked several summers, to the O’Neill National Playwrights Conference in Connecticut, where she served as the resident set designer for 10 years. When she and her partner and frequent collaborator, director Lisa Peterson, moved from Los Angeles to New York, Rachel quickly established herself as one of the most in-demand designers for the city’s most vibrant Off-Broadway theaters, and in 2016 she received an Obie Award for sustained excellence of set design. In this interview with Pier Carlo Talenti and Rob Kramer, Rachel describes the full impact of the pandemic shutdown on her own career and the theatrical ecosystem as a whole. She also enumerates the systemic changes that must take place in the field to ensure that gifted designers of all kinds can enjoy sustainable and lasting careers. https://constitutionbroadway.com/ https://www.hadestown.com/

EPISODE 214I Today's guest is bestselling author (https://amzn.to/2FgFNEY), came out in August and is book one in her new True Blue Royal series. Rachel has 30+ books out, and has taught dozens of writers how to improve their craft. From this perspective, we talk about worldbuilding in stories, whether contemporary or historical, in real places or fictional ones. Since Rachel has so many books about royalty, I asked her to explain how she creates new countries with princes and princesses that sound real and believable. She goes into detail about all the things she researched in order to develop new countries with real problems. She also talks about turning the story upside down - like when she created the wedding chapel that never had any weddings, or the first prince in history who was left at the altar. There is an enormous amount of advice in this episode and plenty of tips no matter what kind of stories you write! You can find out more about Rachel and her books at her website, https://www.rachelhauck.com/ (https://www.rachelhauck.com/), where you can also find all of her social media handles.

We live in a world that’s more connected than ever but, ironically, more isolated. We disappear into our smartphones and tablets, ignoring the the people God placed us with right in our own living rooms, schools, workplaces and out in the world. Perhaps it’s easier to tap “like” on a screen than ask someone about their day or how we can help them—but that’s not the kind of relationship God called us to have with others. Today we talk with four women—Laurie Crouch, Victoria Osteen, and Dr. DeeDee Freeman of TBN’s Better Together, and novelist Rachel Hauck—to learn how they’re intentionally cultivating their relationships with others, especially their friendships, and how taking time to nurture those relationships with love reaps lasting rewards for everyone. We can be here for one another. We can encourage each other” - Dr. DeeDee Freeman “When you hear someone's story, their challenge, what they've been through, it causes you to understand that person better.” - Victoria Osteen “I believe the diversity of how we are is a representation of what Christ is. And so we have to learn how to come together, bring our differences together, and really share and look like what God intended for us to look like.” - Dr. DeeDee Freeman “It's so important to find people you can pray with, and that can agree with you to lift each other up.” - Laurie Crouch “If women knew their worth, if they really understood their value in the eyes of God—and that's where it starts. It's not in the eyes of man, but it's in the eyes of God—I believe we tap into a superpower.” - Victoria Osteen “You know, you can hear scriptures all your life. You can read a scripture a hundred times, but sometimes a friend or someone close to you can read it to you and bring out something that you have never, never thought of.” - Laurie Crouch “I believe God is so awesome with the creativity of how He made us so unique, if you will, to bring our strengths and our talents together to make the whole picture of what God truly looks like.” - Dr. DeeDee Freeman “Love is in everything. Is there any story where there's not a love angle, be it parental or sibling or friendship?” - Rachel Hauck “About the time I started going into full-time writing, I was also on this journey of understanding this amazing love story in scripture.” - Rachel Hauck “When you're confident you're doing the thing that God designed you to do, then you can endure the hard times, or the disappointments, or the ups and the downs.” - Rachel Hauck ________________________ Enjoy these videos on Jesus Calling YouTube channel: Audio podcast: https://bit.ly/2uCnNM0 Original Series video podcast: https://bit.ly/2WzFY0O ________________________ Connect with Jesus Calling Instagram Facebook Twitter Pinterest YouTube Jesus Calling Website
Jessica Kate joins NYT bestselling author Rachel Hauck and award winning romance authors Melissa Tagg and Rachel McMillan to celebrate the launch of Jessica's debut romantic comedy, Love and Other Mistakes! Jessica Kate’s hilarious, romantic debut novel proves that love comes in God’s own time. Natalie Groves once had big dreams. But soon after her fiancé, Jeremy Walters, inexplicably broke off their engagement and left town, her father was diagnosed with cancer. Now tasked with keeping her family afloat, Natalie’s grand plans have evaporated . . . and God feels very far away. Fast-forward seven years, and Jeremy is back in Charlottesville with an infant son and years of regrets. When his niece, Lili, lands on his doorstep in need of a place to stay, Jeremy needs help—and fast. An internship opening finally presents Natalie a chance at her dream job, but she needs a second income to work around it—and the only offer available is Jeremy’s. They could be the solutions to one another’s problems, provided they don’t kill each other in the process. When they join forces, sparks fly. But they both know there’s a thin line between love and hate . . . and that love will turn out to be the best decision—or the biggest mistake—of all. “A stunning debut . . . This tale of love and redemption will stay with you long after you've closed the book. A must-read.” —Rachel Hauck, New York Times bestselling author of The Wedding Dress “Witty. Charming. Heartfelt. I could go on and on about Jessica Kate’s debut novel. From its highly relatable characters to its pitch-perfect dialogue, Love and Other Mistakes is a delightful, romantic read filled with just the right amount of sass. I lost count of the number of times I laughed out loud as I watched Natalie and Jem navigate their relationships, careers, and faith. Definitely one of the most enjoyable books I've read lately, and I can't wait to see what’s next from Jessica Kate!” —Melissa Tagg, Carol Award–winning author of Now and Then and Always and the Walker Family series “Love and Other Mistakes wraps a poignant and warm look at relationships within a smart, sly, and knowing comedic voice. Readers of Sally Thorne and Bethany Turner will be immediately at home with Natalie: an all-too-real heroine who balances whip-smart agency with an endearing vulnerability and whose intersection with long-lost Jeremy helps her forge a path to confidence and discover the woman she was always meant to be. Kate’s unputdownable debut recognizes that all human relationships—familial, friendship, romantic—are worth the keen eye and clever insight of her talented pen.” —Rachel McMillan, author of the Van Buren and DeLuca Mysteries “If you’re looking for a story with sass on top of style, or a fresh voice pumped full of fun, you need to read Love and Other Mistakes. Then after you’ve enjoyed this—and I’m confident you will—make a date with whatever this exciting new author writes next!” —David Rawlings, author of The Baggage Handler

We close out April this week with Set Designer and current Lortel nominee Rachel Hauck! Aside from being a busy designer, Rachel is also a member of the Off-Broadway committee of designers that recently helped spearhead the first collectively bargained agreement ever for Off-Broadway. Now that the contract has been voted on, she joins us to discuss the nuts and bolts of how it came together, some of the most exciting terms of the agreement, and how the USA membership banded together to take such an historic step. Cory and Rachel also discuss reading a script for the first time, how she talks to directors who don't yet know what they want, why "just" can be a dirty word in early design conversations and whether theatre design can be molded to fit a standard work week schedule. And hear how Rachel went from being an LA based designer working in television, including an ill-fated TV show called 'Woops!' about a group of kids who accidentally set off a nuclear bomb, to becoming a full time designer for theatre. Lastly, Rachel gives us the most fascinating answer ever to, "What job would you do if your profession went away."
On Monday, June 27th, 2011, SDC's Gretchen Michelfeld talked to veteran scenic designers Rachel Hauck (The Public, BAM, The Vineyard, South Coast Rep, Eugene O'Neill Resident Set Designer) and Nick Francone (Prospect Theater Company, SPF, Six Figures, New Georges, E.S.T., Santa Fe Opera, assistant on Wicked and Opera) about their experiences collaborating with a variety of directors. They discussed aspects of successful production meetings, dealing with repertory sets, the strangest designs they have made, and offer advice to young directors. This is an enlightening discussion on the successes and struggles in the lives of professional scenic designers.
