Sid Krofft and Adam Carolla finally sit down to talk about the elephant in the room, namely Adam's constant criticism. They get into how much of Sid's work impacted Adam‘s childhood and talk about ‘Pryor's Place', ‘Pink Lady and Jeff', ‘Donnie and Marie', and more. Sid tells stories about touring with Judy Garland and Liberace, designing costumes for ‘The Banana Splits Adventure Hour', seeing Frank Sinatra knocked out by a bullfighter in a bar fight, and the Beatles demanding episodes of ‘H.R. Pufnstuf' be sent to their hotel rooms. He explains how he had nothing to do with the ‘Land of the Lost' remake before Adam and Sid team up to talk trash about Jeff Altman. Host Max Gershberg is joined by fellow Real Sports Producer Nick Dolin to examine a new business shaking up the baseball industry: Big League Advance, a private equity fund founded by former Major League Baseball pitcher Michael Schwimer. The investment firm pays Minor League players money before they make it, in exchange for a percentage of their future baseball earnings. If they don't make it, they don't have to repay. Schwimer's all-or-nothing approach is attractive to investors and upcoming players who are notoriously paid little in the Minor Leagues, though critics say it's exploiting young athletes. Recently the company was in the news when client and MLB star Fernando Tatis, Jr., signed a $340 million contract. They discuss how the business works and examine the risks taken by both investors and players. [The interview starts at 15:00.]   Watch Real Sports with Bryant Gumbel on HBO Max. He played for the Palm Beach Cardinals in 2009, hitting .283 with 21 stolen bases and 16 triples in 122 games. He split 2010 between the Springfield Cardinals (75 games) and Memphis Redbirds (37 games), hitting a combined .283 with 14 stolen bases in 112 games. On September 6, 2011, Chambers was called up to play for the St. Louis Cardinals. On September 16, 2011, during his second major league at-bat, Chambers earned his first Major League hit which brought in the go ahead runs for the Cardinals to beat the Phillies. Chambers, who had been brought in as a defensive sub for Lance Berkman attempted an inside the park home run, but was tagged out at the plate. Nevertheless, he was credited with a triple off of Michael Schwimer who had walked Albert Pujols in order to get to Chambers. Chambers was also noted for his contributions off the field to help spur the Cardinals on during their quest to win the Wild Card playoff berth. With the Cardinals' playoff hopes looking much in doubt prior to the bottom of the ninth inning during their game on September 24, 2011 against arch-rival Chicago Cubs, Chambers was shown on the WGN television broadcast of the game taking it upon himself to encourage and excite the hometown fans to join him in cheering for the team prior to the start of the inning.[3] Incredibly, the Cardinals began to rally, and Chambers himself was then inserted into the game as a pinch-runner, where he proceeded to score the winning run during a wild pitch.[4] That down-to-the wire win was one of many that month that helped the Cardinals earn their playoff berth. On October 28, 2011 Adron Chambers was added to the St. Louis Cardinals World Series roster as an emergency replacement for the injured Matt Holliday before game 7 of the 2011 World Series against the Texas Rangers. After splitting time between St. Louis and the team's minor league system in 2012 and 2013, Chambers was out-righted off the Cardinals roster on November 5, 2013 and elected free agency. In 2013, he had four hits in 26 at bats with St. Louis. He was kept on the Cardinals active roster through the 2013 National League Divisional Series and the 2013 National League Championship Series. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/ernest-tate/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/ernest-tate/support

Michael Schwimer grew up a standout athlete in Fairfax, Virginia and in high school was a star on his baseball and basketball teams. The 6'8'', 240-pound guard led his team to a championship and was even named MVP over future NBA center Roy Hibbert, but ultimately decided to turn down scholarship offers from Coach Mike Krzyzewski at Duke and Coach Rick Pitino at Louisville in order to pitch for his hometown University of Virginia.Schwimer decided to finish his degree, and even interned at a hedge fund, before he was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. He spent three years in the minor leagues before making his major league debut, and finished his career with a 3-2 record. Schwimer says he made more money in the poker games on team road trips than he did as a player during his time in the league. After retiring, Schwimer started Big League Advance, a company that invests in (or stakes) minor league baseball players in exchange for a percentage of their future earnings. His second company, Jambos, is now positioning itself in the rapidly-expanding sports betting market. This December, Schwimer will be appearing on new episodes of High Stakes Poker, which has returned for an eighth season with original hosts Gabe Kaplan and A.J. I'm speaking with Michael Schwimer, the CEO Big League Advance. Big League Advance is like a venture capital fund, but instead of investing in emerging businesses, they invest in minor league baseball players. They do so by buying a percentage of the players future earning capacity. When I first heard Michael describe his story and his business I was that excited to find out more. It's certainly not an investment strategy for everyone as it's high risk/high reward, but it's a really interesting concept. Big League Advance continues to receive recognition around the world, and be approached from other sports wanting to improve in their analytics and data analysis. They've been approached by soccer federations wanting to better prepare for the next world cup and NBA teams looking for an edge over competitors. Michael Schwimer is the CEO of Big League Advance, a company that makes investments in Minor League baseball players in exchange for an agreed-upon percentage of their future earnings.  Before founding BLA, Michael was a professional baseball player, working his way through the minors and reaching the majors as a pitcher for the Philadelphia Phillies.  A shoulder injury left him pondering what to do next, which led to the creation of BLA.  Our conversation discusses Michael’s career as a player, the difficult life of Minor Leaguers, and his mission to improve their fortunes.  We discuss his passion for statistics, application of Sabremetrics, and development of a team of All-Stars in the game of sports analytics.  We close with a look into the future of BLA and Michael’s prediction for this year’s World Series Champion.  Whether his bet proves right or wrong, Michael’s rationale exemplifies second order thinking through the lens of data analytics that is never far from his mind. After Jack & Peter interviewed Soledad O'Brien, it's time to bring in the CEO of the company that everyone in baseball is talking about. They are joined by Michael Schwimer, the Founder and CEO of Big League Advance. Michael mentioned that the Real Sports feature on BLA did not depict his full story, so Jack & Peter sat down to give him free rein to explain his side. Jack fell into a Youtube rabbit hole, so he has a "Something I Heard". The Yankees traded for a speedy outfielder after blowing another win against the Angels.
