Former Major League Baseball star Mike Cameron headlines (at the 8:50 mark) Episode 57 of Kamloops Last Week. Cameron, known best in this region for his exploits with the Seattle Mariners, will square off against former Boston Red Sox slugger Jonny Gomes in a home run derby this weekend at the Tournament Capital Ranch, where the National Slo-Pitch Athletics Canada Co-Ed World Series is taking place. The fundraising and celebrity appearances are being organized by interventionist and sexual abuse survivor Andy Bhatti, who will be offering scholarships worth $250,000 for addiction treatment and recovery beds in locations including Manitoba, Thailand and Mexico. Cameron talks of his experience with toradol shots, anti-inflammatories and detox, along with mental health struggles and anxiety, including some that came when he was traded to the Seattle Mariners from the Cincinnati Reds in exchange for Ken Griffey Jr. We go deep with Cameron and ask him about his legendary four-homer game (which was apparently powered by strawberry milkshakes and BLTs), his crooked hat and smooth style, taking revenge on the White Sox and silencing a heckler at the Big O in Montreal. Cameron reminds us he also robbed Magglio Ordóñez of a grand slam in the four-HR game. Why did he give Edgar Martinez the nickname Scuba Steve? Will he beat Gomes this weekend in the HR derby? Foulds (at 39:03) talks politics in Ep. 57, chiming in on the potential advantages and disadvantages of the informal coalition formed by Dennis Giesbrecht, Caroline King and Darpan Sharma ahead of the Oct. 15 municipal election. We also discuss (at 2:22) Coun. Denis Walsh’s motion to have city staff research and review feasibility of a treatment and recovery centre in a rural part of the city. The Official Seenagers, Never Too Late With Billy Sample, former major league baseball player. Billy spent a combined nine years, from 1978-1986 playing for the Texas Rangers, New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves. Billy is a native of Roanoke Virginia and grew up in Salem, Virgina. Billy is known for his funny quit witt. Other MLB professionals nicknamed him "The example, Billy Sample. Billy plays down his career in a self-deprecating way. A freaking funny guy this Billy Sample. Here is his wiki link, it's really worth the read. Super impressive https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Sample (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Sample) Former Yankee Billy Sample recounts playing days in new bookLianna AlbrizioPascack Valley Community LifeView Comments 0:35 0:35 William "Billy" Sample, professional baseball player turned broadcaster and filmmaker, has added another feather to his cap in a long history of success: published author. The former outfielder who played for the Texas Rangers, the New York Yankees and the Atlanta Braves circa 1978 to 1986, has captured that magical time in his youth and channeled it into an anecdotal book he independently published in June called, "A Year in Pinstripes... And Then Some." In the book - the cover of which features a retro photo of Sample donning his No. 11 Yankee uniform in batter stance - Sample quips that he attributes his love of English and writing to "good-looking" school teachers. Apart from his baseball career, Sample has always been a writer, taking various broadcasting jobs for the Braves and Seattle Mariners and contributing to CBS Radio, EPSN and MajorLeagueBaseball.com. He has also been published in slew of newspapers and magazines from USA Today's Sports Weekly, to Sports Illustrated and The New York Times. He even wrote a screenplay for a film called "Reunion 108," a comedy which was released in 2013 about two generations of pro baseball players returning for a reunion game. The work earned top honors in the Best Unproduced Screenplay Category at the 2011 Hoboken Film Festival. "I think after all these years I enjoy writing more than anything else," said Sample. And it shows in his work. In "Pinstripes," Sample sets the stage on a baseball diamond in 1985 and tells the entire story of his eight-year stint in baseball - a sport that he holds dear in his heart and helped shape the rest of his career. The 61-year-old father of three said he was 15 when he made a "conscious decision" he was going to pursue baseball. "I love its history," he explained, "and I love [what] it means to a lot of people. There's a timeline in baseball that's like none other... My aunt took me to my first game in Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium. [There are] memories as a family or as a care unit that are hard to duplicate in other sports. [The] setting, the pace of the game allows for memories that will be etched in your mind forever." Sample takes readers back to his humble upbringing in Salem, Va. to his glory days at Andrew Lewis High School where the 5-foot 9-inch powerhouse was an outstanding multi-sport athlete in baseball, football and basketball. He goes on to write about his first draft by the Rangers while attending Madison College (now James Madison University) in the mid-1970s. "I think no matter what I've done, I've tried to enhance people's appreciation of the game," said Sample of writing the book. "It's easier to do as a player [and] live vicariously through the actions I've emitted on the field." He continued, "As a writer, I have a venue where I can steer you to enjoyable parts of the game in which you're going to learn something you didn't know before... or open up an area that you hadn't thought about before. I think I do that fairly well. I think in part it was cathartic for me to get it out." Sample said watching Yankees players Tony Kubek and Bobby Richardson on TV growing up and being able interact with them later

Baseball and BBQ #Episode 121 features former Major League Baseball catcher, Josh Thole and pitmaster, Matt Dallman from Live Coals Barbeque   Josh Thole is a former Major League Baseball catcher who played for the New York Mets and the Toronto Blue Jays.  He has a special place in the heart of Mets fans as he was behind the dish for the first and, up to this point, only no-hitter in the 59-year franchise's history.  Josh has a great sense of humor and wonderful stories to share, one of which involves a garage full of people waiting for him to be selected in the MLB Draft.  Catching a knuckleball pitcher is one of the hardest things for a catcher, and Josh did it quite well as he became knuckleballer, R. A. Dickey's favorite receiver.  In 2012 Josh was part of the trade, along with Dickey and a few others that brought catcher, Travis d'Arnaud and Noah Syndergaard aka Thor from the Blue Jays to the Mets.  We finished recording and Josh brings up his love of barbeque, which, along with being a great guest, gives us yet another reason to have him back.                Matt Dallman is a Texas transplant by way of Kansas City, MO who has made an indelible mark on the region's fanatical barbecue community.  In 2015 this self-taught pitmaster opened the BBQ restaurant, 18th & Vine in Dallas, Texas.  Since then, he has sold his interest in the restaurant and in the Summer of 2018 he started the catering operation, Live Coals Barbeque.  Matt has many stories and cooking tips.  We could not pass up the opportunity to talk some baseball once we learned of his Kansas City Royals fandom.  Matt is another guest we would like to come back, but rather than wait for his next appearance, if you want to learn more, go to https://thelivecoals.com/     We recommend you go to Fifth & Cherry, https://fifthandcherry.com for wonderful cutting boards, http://www.baseballbbq.com for grill tools and clothing for barbecue and baseball fans, the Pandemic Baseball Book Club, https://www.pbbclub.com  to find many of the wonderful books we have featured as well as some additional swag, and https://bbqbuddha.com/ for rubs and award winning sauces. We conclude the show with the song, "Baseball Always Brings You Home" from the musician, Dave Dresser and the poet, Shel Krakofsky. We truly appreciate our listeners and hope that all of you are staying safe.If you would like to contact the show, we would love to hear from you.Call the show:  (516) 855-8214Email:  baseballandbbq@gmail.comTwitter:  @baseballandbbqInstagram:  baseballandbarbecueYouTube:  baseball and bbqWebsite:  https://baseballandbbq.weebly.comFacebook:  baseball and bbq

Outcomes in our lives are comprised of both decisions we make and things that happen to us. Some we can control and others we can’t, but what we do have a say in is how we respond to the events that take place. We can allow our experiences to pull us into darkness, or we can use them as a catalyst for good change—getting us closer to the lives God intended.  Former Major League Baseball player Darryl Strawberry had a difficult childhood full of abuse and violence at the hands of his alcoholic father. Those difficulties left him unable to handle the stardom that would come his way once he entered the professional sports world, and he found himself down a path paved with sin. Darryl’s mother prayed fervently that God would knock him from his throne, and God saved Darryl when he couldn’t save himself. Now, Darryl has been called to spread the message of God’s forgiveness and redemption all over the country through Strawberry Ministries.  Amy Downs was just an average girl who found herself in a tragic situation: she was a clerk at a bank that was destroyed in the Oklahoma City bombing, which claimed the lives of eighteen of her coworkers. Amy was one of the last survivors to be pulled from the rubble, and once she saw the sunlight, Amy told God that she wanted to live her life differently. That sparked a myriad of changes, including improvements to her health, her spiritual life, her education, and her career—and now Amy is the CEO of the very same bank where she was once a “math challenged” teller who saw no hope in her future.    Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling for Graduates Jesus Calling Past interview: Kurt Angle Upcoming interview: Holly Hayes   Darryl Strawberry Strawberry Ministries MVP of the Texas League Findingyourway.com Turn Your Season Around   Amy Downs Murrah Building https://amydowns.org   Interview Quotes: “I wore a baseball uniform for seventeen years and I identified myself as a baseball player. And it wasn't until I came to Christ that I was able to identify myself as a man.” - Darryl Strawberry “Everybody was praising me for this great baseball player I was about to become. But I always say it was my pain that started to lead me to my greatness and my greatness would lead me to my destructive behavior.” - Darryl Strawberry “God was doing for me what I couldn't do for myself because of my mother’s prayers to cover her children.” - Darryl Strawberry “God made me understand that the forgiveness was not for [my father]. It was for me.” - Darryl Strawberry “When God does His transformation, He does it for you, but He does it to get through to you so He can get somebody else to have the same revelation that you have had.” - Darryl Strawberry “I remember looking up at the gray sky and just taking that first breath of fresh air and promising God I will never live my life the same.” - Amy Downs “I thought, if I had an issue with drugs, I would go to rehab. I'm going to have to do what it takes for me to get free [from obesity] and just not worry about judgment from others. So I did.” - Amy Downs “Having that experience of facing death at twenty-eight and just sort of realizing, like, I want to live my life with intention, and whether that's doing things purely for my own selfish enjoyment, like a triathlon, you know, or whether that is wanting to serve people in a very difficult role and position, like being CEO of an organization.” - Amy Downs ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel: Audio Playlist: https://bit.ly/2PrbuwH Video Playlist: https://bit.ly/2PsmEkJ What’s Good?  Host Andrew Dixon & Rapheal Skeete Rory Costello is a member of the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR). He lives in Brooklyn, New York. Rory has written many biographies of major-leaguers and other baseball figures for SABR's BioProject website. He has a lot of interests when it comes to choosing his subjects, but players from Latin American balla and the Caribbean are right up there at the top. SABR members have a variety of interests, and this is reflected in the diversity of its research committees. There are more than two dozen groups devoted to the study of a specific area related to the game — from Baseball and the Arts to Statistical Analysis to the Deadball Era to Women in Baseball. In addition, many SABR members meet formally and informally in regional chapters throughout the year and hundreds come together for the annual national convention, the organization's premier event. These meetings often include panel discussions with former major league players and research presentations by members. Oct 15, 1986: N.Y. Mets (7) at Houston (6), 16 inn.
