Fraught with misunderstandings and mistrust, the incident left three British sailors and two Americans, including the captain of the sealer, Charles H. Barnard, abandoned in the barren, windswept, and inhospitable Falklands for a year and a half. With deft narrative skill and unequaled knowledge of the very pith of the seafaring life, Dolin describes in vivid and harrowing detail the increasingly desperate existence of the castaways during their eighteen-month ordeal―an all-too-common fate in the Great Age of Sail.

Join Uncle Brad and Jules as they explore the sophisticated world of the Bensonhurst cocktail in this episode of The Art Of Drinking. Uncle Brad kicks things off by sharing his recent Denver adventure and his visit to the iconic Cruise Room, one of his favorite watering holes. He then guides listeners through the step-by-step process of crafting the perfect Bensonhurst, complete with the full recipe so you can recreate this Italian-American gem at home.  Jules puts her own refreshing spin on the classic by introducing the Benny Spritz, a lighter, bubblier variation that's perfect for those who love a good spritz. Uncle Brad dives deep into the cocktail's fascinating history and shines a spotlight on one of its key ingredients—Cynar, the artichoke liqueur that everyone seems to mispronounce (we'll help you get it right!).  The episode wraps up with practical tips from both hosts on how to decode bar menus and recreate those mysterious cocktails you spot when you're out and about.   American whale oil lit the world. The Industrial Revolution couldn't have happened without it. Connecticut was part of the whaling industry of the nineteenth century that sent thousands of American ships manned by tens of thousands of men to hunt whales across the world's oceans. Stonington, Mystic, New London, and New Haven were part of New England's predominance in successful  whaling. In fact, New London, Connecticut is known today as the “Whaling City”.    My guest Eric Jay Dolan  is the author of sixteen award-winning books on maritime history. In this episode, we will be talking about the history of American whaling taken from his work in Leviathan The History of Whaling in America published in 2007 byW.W. THE FALKLANDS AND THE WAR OF 1812:  1/4: Left for Dead: Shipwreck, Treachery, and Survival at the Edge of the World Hardcover – May 7, 2024 by  Eric Jay Dolin  (Author) https://www.amazon.com/Left-Dead-Shipwreck-Treachery-Survival/dp/1324093080 In Left for Dead, Eric Jay Dolin―“one of today's finest writers about ships and the sea” (American Heritage)―tells the true story of a wild and fateful encounter between an American sealing vessel, a shipwrecked British brig, and a British warship in the Falkland archipelago during the War of 1812. A tale of intriguing complexity, with surprising twists and turns throughout―involving greed, lying, bullying, a hostile takeover, stellar leadership, ingenuity, severe privation, endurance, banishment, the great value of a dog, the birth of a baby, a perilous thousand-mile open-ocean journey in a seventeen-foot boat, an improbable rescue mission, and legal battles over a dubious and disgraceful wartime prize―Left for Deadshows individuals in wartime under great duress acting both nobly and atrociously, and offers a unique perspective on a pivotal era in American maritime history.1849 FALKLANDS

The story of Robinson Crusoe, published in 1719, is the most famous tale of a castaway. But Daniel Dafoe's Robinson Crusoe was a work of fiction. Best-selling author Eric Jay Dolin's new book recounts the true story of five castaways in the Falkland Islands during the War of 1812. It's called Left for Dead – Shipwreck, Treachery and Survival at the Edge of the World. The story that Dolin tells is one of incredible survival in the harshest of conditions. The book's publicist provides a good description: "Set against the backdrop of wartime conflicts, Dolin's narrative weaves a compelling saga of a chance encounter between an American sealing vessel, a shipwrecked British brig, and a British warship. Misunderstandings and mistrust led to the abandonment of three British sailors and two Americans, including Charles H. Barnard, the captain of the sealer, in the unforgiving terrain of the Falklands for a harrowing eighteen months. Left for Dead is a tale that unravels with intriguing complexity, offering surprising twists and turns. Reminiscent of David Grann's The Wager, Left for Dead reveals a spectrum of human behavior under extreme duress—depicting instances of greed, deception, and bullying juxtaposed with stellar leadership, ingenuity, and remarkable endurance. The story unfolds with banishment, the profound value of a loyal companion, the birth of a child, a perilous thousand-mile open-ocean voyage in a mere seventeen-foot boat, an unlikely rescue mission, and ensuing legal battles over a contentious wartime prize." Eric Jay Dolin talked about the book and the story on The Spark Monday.  Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Are they pirates, profiteers or legitimately authorized extensions of George Washington's almost non-existent American Navy? We'll find out with guest historian Eric Jay Dolin, author of Rebels at Sea: Privateering in the American RevolutIon. Dolin will underscore an element missing from most maritime histories of the American Revolution: a ragtag fleet of private vessels — from 20-foot whaleboats to 40-cannon men-of-war helped win the war, including some 200 from Connecticut. Armed with cannons, guns, muskets, and pikes, thousands of privateers tormented the British on the Atlantic and in bays and harbors on both sides of the ocean.    Eric Jay Dolin is the author of sixteen books, including Leviathan: The History of Whaling in America, a topic we look forward to exploring in an upcoming episode of Grating the Nutmeg. Rebels at Sea was awarded the Morison Book Award for Naval Literature, conferred by the Naval Order of the United States, and was a finalist for the New England Society Book Award.  His forthcoming book, to be published in May, 2024, is Left for Dead: Shipwreck, Treachery, and Survival at the Edge of the World. Dolin lives in Marblehead, Massachusetts, with his family.   Thanks to my guest Eric Jay Dolin.
