Chris Nowinski (Stop Hitting Kids in the Head, Head Games: Football's Concussion Crisis, Concussion Legacy Foundation) is an author, retired pro-wrestler, and neuroscientist. Chris joins the Armchair Expert to discuss never forgetting the culture shock of wealth while studying at Harvard, his stint wrestling on Monday Night Raw, and not having ever really been in a real fight. Chris and Dax talk about why the violence in football is actually worse than WWE, his first instance of REM behavior disorder, and learning the preciousness of brain cells. Chris explains the supposed causes and physiology of CTE, why we have selective framing for how to think about the mental health of athletes transitioning out of sports, and how wrestlers now really appreciate how much safer the industry is.Follow Armchair Expert on the Wondery App or wherever you get your podcasts. Former Harvard athlete Chris Nowinski turned World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) star after a reality TV show catapulted him into the world of professional wrestling. Performing as the obnoxious and slick-talking villain Chris Harvard, he worked alongside superstars like Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson, John Cena, and Hulk Hogan. Chris lived the dream, until one fateful match left him suffering from post-concussion syndrome. With his career seemingly at its end, Chris began researching into sports-related head trauma and convincing athletes to donate their brains. His work helped usher in a scientific breakthrough and uncovered a silent epidemic affecting thousands of athletes.Presenter: Asya Fouks Producer: Tommy Dixon(Photo: Chris Nowinski. We've known about it for almost 20 years and yet there is still very little being done to combat Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy - more commonly none as CTE. And if you think this only affects NFL players, think again. CTE is available in all shapes and sizes - whether it's youth hockey, high school football, club soccer leagues, or professional wrestling, so many of our young athletes are in the line of fire. Thankfully, for most of those twenty years, former college football player and professional wrestler - turned anti-CTE advocate and head of Boston University's CTE center - Chris Nowinski, has taken it upon himself to stare this issue down and make sure parents, coaches and athletes have accurate information about what happens when someone suffers continual head injuries. Chris even managed to get a Phd in behavioral neuroscience along the way, so that he could understand and further the science behind CTE research. Today he joins host Jane Marie to talk about his career, his advocacy and what we know about the current state of CTE in sports. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

He challenges early specialization and prolonged contact exposure, suggesting reforms like delaying contact sports and prioritizing informed consent. CTE: From ‘punch drunk' to today, how this devastating disease is finally being taken seriously

*A disclaimer that there will be discussions of self harm in this episode* In 2003, Chris Nowinski found himself in a WWE wrestling ring, concussed and not remembering where he was or how he was supposed to finish the match. This would be a pivotal moment not just in his life but for an entire field of research on a neurodegenerative disease long known to exist but poorly defined and even censored: chronic traumatic encephalopathy or CTE. There's evidence that people knew about CTE — which went by names like “punch drunk” — starting in the 1920s, but it wasn't until the 2000s, when American football players began being diagnosed with CTE post-mortem, that the disease started gaining public traction. Many of those football players, including Andre Waters, had died by suicide. Chris, now a behavioral neuroscientist and the co-founder and CEO of the Concussion Legacy Foundation, pushed to get the brains of Waters and other athletes tested, and began spreading awareness and putting pressure on organizations like the NFL to acknowledge the devastation this disease can bring to athletes and their families.Today on the show we will cover what's known about CTE and how to prevent it, and how researchers are trying to find ways of diagnosing it in people who are still alive and working to find treatments. Here are some good CTE resources:https://concussionfoundation.org/CTE-resources/support https://www.bu.edu/cte/resources/resources-for-families/Send us your science stories/factoids/news for a chance to be featured on an upcoming Tiny Show and Tell Us episode and to be entered to win a Tiny Matters coffee mug! Changes are coming to the NFL's concussion protocol, after the way an injury to the Dolphins quarterback was handled. A big hit in a Sunday game in week 3 left Tua Tagovailoa wobbly. He was evaluated for a head injury but allowed back into the game by a team trainer and independent neuro-trauma consultant. Just days four later, he suffered another big hit and serious concussion in a Thursday night matchup. The injury reignited a national debate over concussions, and how best to protect athletes in contact sports. The league has since promised it will take action. Earlier this week, former WWE wrestler and neuroscientist Dr. Chris Nowinski joined host Lisa Brady to discuss the Tagovailoa injuries, his concerns over the dangerous long-term impacts of concussions, and what he sees as the NFL's failure of leadership to protect the players' health. Dr. Chris Nowinski, who has his own concussion history and is still coping with lingering impacts, also discussed the need for not only reform pro-sports but also children's sports. He explained how his 'Stop hitting kids in the head' campaign is intended to end harmful practices for youth in contact sports including discouraging kids from playing tackle football until they're 14. Due to time limitations, we could not include all of the conversations in our original segment. On the FOX News Rundown Extra, you will hear our entire conversation with former WWE wrestler and neuroscientist Dr. Chris Nowinski and hear more of his unique take on the NFL's concussion policies, the research going in to head injuries, and why his own personal struggles after past concussions have motivated him to fight for major changes.  Learn more about your ad choices. As the Biden administration works to organize a prisoner swap with Russia, American prisoner Brittney Griner remains in jail awaiting her upcoming trial on October 25th. The WNBA star was detained in Moscow this February for having cannabis cartridges in her luggage and was later convicted in August. Another American currently imprisoned abroad is Paul Whelan, who was arrested in Russia four years ago and convicted of being a spy. His brother, David Whelan joins the Rundown to discuss the ongoing efforts of both his family and the U.S. government to ensure Paul's release.   Controversy followed after Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa appeared to seize up after suffering a serious blow to the head for the second game in a row. His team claims he passed their concussion protocol after the first blow to the head, yet many health experts who saw the first hit on Tagovailoa recognized all the signs of a concussion. There has since been major backlash to the decision to allow the Dolphins QB to play despite the serious threat posed to his health. Former WWE wrestler and neuroscientist Dr. Chris Nowinski joins the podcast to discuss the concerns over the dangerous long-term impacts of concussions, what he sees as the NFL's failure of leadership to protect the players' health and his ‘Stop hitting kids in the head' campaign to end harmful practices for youth in contact sports.   Plus, commentary by FOX News Contributor Deroy Murdock.
