“The Derby gods.” It's a device that tells us rather more about us than them. We know there's no such thing, really; and that if they did exist, they would find sadistic satisfaction in stringing us along in the delusion that they will ultimately even out their torments and benedictions, only to let the ground

Check out the very best Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby seminar in the game right HERE! Nobody does it better! On this episode of Past the Wire's podcast, Gate to Wire, our hosts Michael Vale and Jonathan Stettin take a look at a few different topics. They discuss why and how the sad passing of Midnight Bourbon occurred in his stall at Churchill Downs on Sunday morning, but was not reported until Wednesday by the Daily Racing Form. Apparently Midnight Bourbon fell ill from some sort of gastrointestinal issue following a five furlong workout. The colt reportedly declined rapidly and succumbed to the illness later in the morning. It is a sad and tragic loss.  Midnight Bourbon was one of the top stakes horses in the country and had most recently raced in both The Saudi Cup in Saudi Arabia and the Dubai World Cup in Dubai. Not many horses compete in both those races and most horses who ship there to run get a break when they return to the states. Midnight Bourbon had only been back a few weeks and was already working seemingly with no break. Additionally the horse was stabled with his trainer, Steve Asmussen at Churchill Downs. Asmussen also trains early Kentucky Derby favorite Epicenter and the Derby is just over two weeks away. That makes the fact this went unreported for three or four days even stranger. On a slight stray from the course Mike and Jon take a little look at the Mike Tyson plane incident. We think you'll appreciate their takes. We also take a look at the return of champions Malathaat and Letruska on Friday at Keeneland and Saturday at Oaklawn. Mike and Jon both like a horse in the Apple Blossom, and it is not the heavy favorite and tough to beat champ Letruska. Thank you for tuning in and we hope you enjoy the show!

So-called Maiden races are filled with horses seeking their first wins. 1:10 Introduction to the Lecomte (G3), to be run at 1 & 1/16 miles on the dirt for 3 year-olds with a purse of $200k.The Silverbulletday Stakes is held for 3 y.o. fillies at a distance of 1mile and 70 yards with a $150k purse. 2:42 Recapping Trixie's love/hate relationship with Midnight Bourbon, a previous winner of this race. (Will Call Me Midnight follow suit?) 4:00 Record and analysis of Post Position 1, Surfer Dude. Color Trixie unconvinced. 4:35 Is PP2, Unified Report, rising enough to compete here? 5:23 PP3, Pappacap is a huge story this season. Under “Jersey Joe” Bravo, is he apt to get stuck on the rail? (Bravo left Monmouth in NJ for Cali last year—was it the crop rule issue?) 6:50 Weej explains the 2021 Monmouth crop rule and recaps last summer's hullabaloo over it. 11:03 HISA (the Horseracing Safety and Integrity Act, being drafted now) will have to deal with complex issues like this uniformly to be useful. 11:42 Pappacap's been stuck behin Corniche twice. 12:40 In PP4, Trafalgar has Trixie's and Weej's interest as a possible up-and-comer. 14:38 In PP5 will be Assmussen-trained Epicenter, a kid of Not This Time, with a recent, exciting win in the Gun Runner Stakes for futurities (2 year-olds who all became 3 on New Year's Day). 15:30 Analyzing Cyberknife, a recent maiden trained by Brad Cox, in PP6. 16:43 Blue Kentucky in PP7 could surprise, but is currently a toss for Trixie and Weej. 17:07 Call Me Midnight, in PP8, also raises questions. 18:00 Finally in PP9, Presidential will need to make a big step up to contend with this company. 19:13 Weej loves Epicenter here with interest in a couple more. 20:56 Onto the Silverbulletday Stakes analysis. Only 6 horses! 21:12 In Post Postion 1 is Fannie and Freddie, who just placed in the Untapable stakes for futurities. 22:52 Bernabreezy, who seems very promising, is in PP2. 23:38 PP3 is Miss Chamita, a maiden at Indiana Grand, who Weej finds a curious choice for this race and company. 25:05 Skipping ahead a bit to the very-exciting La Crete (PP5), sibling of Clairiere, who won this race in 2021. 25:40 Back to PP4, Pletcher's horse, Sweet as Pie, to be ridden by Giroux. 26:16 Returning to the fantastic prospect La Crete. 28:20 Candy Raid is the last filly, in PP6, and a bit of a question mark. 29:18 Weej describes what Claiming Races are and what seeing them in a horse's record can signify. 31:07 Besides the excellent La Crete, Weej and Trixie give their other faves for this race. 33:46 Young horses mature A LOT on their way to the Derby, and we will be able to SEE it over the next several months in their bodies and demeanors. (All these horses are rock stars, we know, so we feel free to tease.) 19:06 Trixie's busted Superfecta. Thank goodness for Flash of Mischief, but WTF, Mr Wireless! Weej's ruined Exacta-macka-ganza. 20:57 A Ren Faire fiasco didn't make Dial In for Lute a winner, go figure. 22:16 Adding up all the betting , we had great entertainment for cheap, recycling our winnings all weekend. 24:29 Our next set of races to discuss/analyze/blather over are next Saturday, October 2nd, at the beautiful Santa Anita racetrack in Arcadia, California. The popularity of horse racing in Chicago was not to be rivaled in any other metropolitan area. Since the 1800's, the Windy City's enthusiasm for both harness and Thoroughbred racing led to 10 major racetracks being built in the Chicago area. Sadly, it appears that racing in the area will be dealt a major blow with the apparent demise of Arlington Park which has hosted racing since 1927. Our first guest, Kimberly A. Rinker, a 1983 graduate of the Ohio State University, has been involved with Chicago horse racing since 1984 – both as a writer and as a participant. An award-winning journalist, she is a licensed trainer-driver of Standardbreds and represented the U.S. in the International Drivers Championship in Moscow, Russia. She has documented the racing history of the Chicago-area tracks in two published books – “Chicago's Horse Racing Venues” and “Arlington Park Racetrack.” Our guest handicapper will be Bob “Railbird” Roberts, a veteran turf writer, handicapper and author of “ Writings of a Railbird.“ The modern day Damon Runyon character still holds weekly handicapping seminars, creates tip sheets and coordinates handicapping seminars in the greater Cleveland area. Bob will join John to examine the outstanding races that will take place at Parx on Saturday. On a program that features two Grade 1, a Grade 2 and two Grade 3 events, the duo will formulate a Pick-4 ticket on races 9-12. The marquee races of the 13-race day that starts at 12:05 pm, are the $1 million Pennsylvania Derby for the boys and Cotillion featuring fillies. With the defection of Medina Spirit, Hot Rod Charlie takes center stage in the Derby and readies for a rematch with Midnight Bourbon, who he harshly eliminated in the Haskell and disqualified for his actions. The Cotillion is a race where you will need your E-Z Win Forms and plenty of fillies on your ticket – no less than six graded stakes winners will enter the starting gate for the winner's share of $1 million.

Timestamped Topics/Links Below- 00:30 We begin with gloating—of course we do! We lather the listeners with our bragadoccio. Picking Essential Quality wasn't hard, but our outlying favorite was a near-universal “Toss” among other handicappers. Check the transcript, Judge! : ) 1:20 Midnight Bourbon almost spited Trixie (by winning) and earned Weej's respect for his speed. 2:20 Essential Quality earned that canoe—will he be the Horse of the Year (again)? 3:33 Keepmeinmind came in 4th, helping his connections due to the fat purse distribution, but not as gainfully for his bettors. 4:00 Dynamic One was also stinky and Masqueparade wasn't remarkable. 4:17 But Miles D! Everyone we heard TOSSED him, but WE LIKED HIM. They can eat our shirts! If you bet him to come into the money—not to beat EQ, let's not be complete nutballs—Then YOU WON, TOO! Yay! Gloat along with us! 6:03 Rat turd of the week was King Fury, he of the cool name and weak follow-through. (NOTE: We respect and admire the tremendous work it takes to bring these wonderful animals to peak condition for racing, and we know they are rock stars! But when we're betting money, a little “rat turd” talk doesn't seem too cruel. King Fury's still awesome and is undoubtedly above our foolishness.) 7:56 Midnight Bourbon seems to need great competition, but if he gets it, can he ever prevail over it? 8:45 The Jockey Club Gold race is next weekend, September 4th. For the first time, it's been rescheduled from October at Belmont Park by the New York Racing Association to avoid it being too close and cannibalized by the Breeders Cup races in November. 10:30 A story about the incredible, ineffable Man O'War in 1920, when he ran the Jockey Clob Gold against only ONE horse who was serving as a trail pony for him. One example of how dominant horses can suppress fields. Here's a related article: https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/We_asked_Why_are_the_fields_so_small_at_Saratoga_123 13:30 From the thumbnail, we cover the story of Firenze Fire savaging Yaupon. Thoroughbred horses are hot-blooded individuals and 3 year-olds are Young Horses! Bitey-bitey at top speed! Watch the race here: https://youtu.be/ogW_eXSLyGA 17:07 Will these horses meet again at the Breeders Cup? 18:58 Sad hurricane damage to Fair Grounds race track in New Orleans, the third oldest in the nation. We wish that magical part of the country safety and every good thing as they recover. 20:32 More details of Jockey Club Gold 20:49 There are 6 weeks left in our bet a long tour before the Breeders Cup. Download the whole schedule here: https://www.33xpl.com This is our only podcast this week. 21:44 It's not the final field for the Jockey Club Gold, but we'll discuss what we know about the field. This early, scratches are very possible, so we'll see who actually runs. 22:30 Weej and Trixie are both are on record as LIKING Forza Di Oro, and maybe Max Player too. 23:30 What about By My Standards or Forewarned, are Happy Saver or Chess Chief better options. 24:50 It's funny how, in horse racing, four years old sounds “old” when it's really prime, just a young adult, and the horses tend to reach their max speed between 4 and 5. 25:50 Night Ops loves second and we love saying HAPPY RACING YA'LL! 1:15 History of the Travers, America's oldest stakes race to be held at Saratoga, America's oldest racetrack, this Saturday. The Riddle family gives Man O'War's trophy cup, the original of which was made by Tiffany. 2:33 What the heck is the Travers canoe? Floating in the infield pond of the track since the 1920's, it's always painted in the colors of the winning jockey's silks from the previous race. This is now a sixty year-old tradition of bragging rights. 4:02 Midnight Bourbon returns after the disastrous Haskell, fortunately healthy for racing! After being burned, Trixie may be through with this “bad boyfriend.” 5:59 Essential Quality's enormous and enormously fast behind would look fine in anything, but especially a canoe. Does the latest Jim Dandy give us any doubts? 7:53 Perhaps the second post position is even better than #1. 8:30 Repost of the recent article by HRN on small fields this season: https://www.horseracingnation.com/news/We_asked_Why_are_the_fields_so_small_at_Saratoga_123 Aere dominant horses like EQ “to blame?” 9:20 How much were You paid for falling out of bed this morning? Fat purses and small fields mean cabbage for everyone! 10:24 EQ is the “Kwisatz Hadderach,” so perhaps dress your bets around him like an important piece of furniture. 10:45 Keepmeinmind is just happy to be here and racking up the dough underneath without having to bother to win. 13:00 Dynamic One was last seen in the Curlin and feels like fresh flesh in this race. 13:37 We both like Miles D, not just for his awesome namesake, but as a lightly-raced, perhaps longer-shot prospect with a serious jockey aboard. 16:03 Masqueparade is well-matched for this company, a real exacta possibility. 16:46 King Fury had a terrible last “prep race” on turf, but this is back to the dirt. 17:51 Apparently, trainers do NOT carry the jockeys on their backs across finish lines. Is it possible for one to have the “inside track” on a race from year to year? 19:05 Weej vows a SHIRT WILL BE EATEN (!) if King Fury does better than last or next-to-last. 20:27 Saratoga's upcoming Jockey Club Gold, 103rd running, for 3 year-olds and up. Perhaps next weekend we'll see more horses who experienced 2020 as a “lost season?” 22:52 How is an assassin supposed to look in the Post Parade? Welcome back to another episode of the Barnstormer Sports Podcast! We have a great lineup of topics for you tonight! We are talking Kentucky Derby, we’re talking a little MLB, and we also invite on a very special guest, all the way from Pasadena, Jeff Chappy Chapman! Jeff is the VIP host for Santa Anita Racetrack, he knows a lot about horse racing, and is also one of the hosts for Angel Radio out in LA at 8:30 every Saturday morning. We kick tonight off with some memories of the Kentucky Derby from a time when we drove U-Haul trucks for Levee Restaurants. Then it's time for a round of highlights from the world of Major League Baseball. We talk about the huge performance between the Dodgers and the Padres, lament the slow deterioration of the Cubs, and also give kudos to some amazing players like Mike Trout, Anthony Rizzo, and Jacob DeGrom. At about that time, Chappy joins us on the line. He can’t fault the Dodgers either even though they want to but when the conversation turns to the White Sox he just can't take it anymore and we move onto the Derby. Chappy weighs in on the three West Coast horses that are showing the most promise, Medina Spirit, Hot Rod Charlie, and Rock Your World, and we hear his praise for the quality of Bob Baffert and John Sadler’s training too. Before he leaves he gives us some long-shot picks and once he is off the line the rest of us do too, but compared to his insights, our guesses might as well be based on the color of the horses!Key Points From This Episode:Memories of driving U-Haul trucks working for Levee Restaurants during the Kentucky Derby.Talking Major League Baseball highlights and the performance of the different teams and players.Jeff Chapman joins the chat and highlights Rizzo striking out Frederick. The issue of how badly the Cubs are struggling and regressing.Jeff’s perspective that the Dodgers have it made even though he hates them.Whether the Giants have any chance considering the teams they are up against.Thoughts on who is coming out of the American League.Moving onto the Derby with all this talk of the Dodgers and White Sox.Jeff gives a rundown of the three West coasters, Medina, Hot Rod, and Rock Your World.Chappy gives us three long shots picks before he leaves!More long shot picks by our hosts on Midnight Bourbon, Bezos, Known Agenda, and more.Links Mentioned in Today’s Episode:Barnstormer Sports Podcast on FacebookBarnstormer Sports Podcast on InstagramJeff ChapmanTrevor BauerFernando TatisJacob DeGromMike TroutAnthony RizzoMedina SpiritRock Your WorldHot Rod CharlieBob BaffertJohn SadlerBezosKnown Agenda
