NBA – Pistons draft Ivey at No. 5 and acquire No. 13 pick Duren The Detroit Pistons have selected Purdue’s Jaden Ivey with the No. 5 overall pick in the NBA draft. Detroit’s rebuilding plan should get a boost with the addition of the dynamic player. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Ivey can play point or shooting guard. The busy team acquired Memphis center Jalen Duren, who was drafted No. 13 overall by Charlotte and traded to New York. Detroit also added Knicks guard Kemba Walker in exchange for a 2025 first-round pick it acquired the previous day. The Pistons added Italian guard Gabriele Procida, who shot 38.3% on 3-pointers for Bologna. NBA – Chicago Bulls take Arizona guard Dalen Terry at No. 18 The Chicago Bulls drafted Arizona guard Dalen Terry with the No. 18 pick, adding size and versatility in the backcourt as they try to take another step after making a big jump to reach the playoffs for the first time in five years. The 6-foot-7, 195-pound Terry averaged 8 points, 4.8 rebounds, 3.9 assists, and 1.2 steals as a sophomore in coach Tommy Lloyd’s first season. Owning a 7-foot wingspan, he can guard multiple spots. And on offense, he can play on or off the ball. Chicago did not have a second-round pick as it was forfeited for a tampering violation. NBA – Magic take Banchero 1st, Holmgren, Smith follow in NBA draft The Orlando Magic selected Duke freshman Paolo Banchero with the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft. After leading the Blue Devils to the Final Four in coach Mike Krzyzewski’s final season, the 6-foot-10 forward was called first by NBA Commissioner Adam Silver to begin the draft, beating out fellow first-year forwards Jabari Smith Jr. and Chet Holmgren. Banchero, wearing a purple suit full of bling, received a loud ovation inside Barclays Center, where Duke lost in the ACC Tournament final.   Notre Dame freshman Guard Blake Wesley went 25th overall to San Antonio.  Michigan had forward Caleb Houston go to Orlando at 32nd overall, his Wolverine teammated Moussa Diabate was taken 43rd overall to the LA Clippers.  Michigan State guard Max Christie was taken by the Lakers with the 35th overall pick.  MLB – Major League Baseball Last Night Baltimore Orioles 4, Chicago White Sox 0 Pittsburgh Pirates 8, Chicago Cubs 7 – 10 Innings Tigers were off Orioles 4, White Sox 0 – Rookie Rutschman leads Orioles past hobbled White Sox 4-0 Rookie Adley Rutschman homered, doubled and drove in three runs to lead the Baltimore Orioles past the banged-up Chicago White Sox 4-0. Kremer struck out four and walked one in his second straight scoreless outing and fourth start since returning from a strained right oblique on June 5. Jorge Lopez entered with one out in the ninth and fanned Tim Anderson and Andrew Vaughn for his 12th save. Pirates 8, Cubs 7 – F/10 – Chavis stars with bat, defense, Pirates edge Cubs in 10 Michael Chavis hit a tying home run in the eighth before pulling off a defensive gem and delivering a game-ending single in the 10th, sending the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Chicago Cubs 8-7. Chavis’ solo homer made it 7-all after the Cubs scored five times in the top of the eighth. In the 10th, Chavis charged a slow grounder by Jason Heyward toward first base and threw out Patrick Wisdom at the plate. The call stood after a Chicago challenge. In the bottom half, Chavis blooped a single to right and automatic runner Ke’Bryan Hayes scored in a collision with catcher Wilson Contreras. Hayes remained down for a few moments before walking off under his own power. Hayes homered earlier in the game. U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Committee chair Susanne Lyons said she views Salt Lake City as the leading candidate for the 2034 Olympics, and that the complexities of hosting 2030 only two years after the Summer Games in Los Angeles make it a less-likely scenario. Horse Racing – NYRA suspends Baffert 1 year; eligible to return in January The New York Racing Association suspended trainer Bob Baffert for one year Thursday for repeated medication violations. A panel credited Baffert for time served from an initial suspension that makes the two-time Triple Crown-winning trainer eligible to saddle horses in New York again by late January. The ban is shorter than the two-year suspension Churchill Downs handed Baffert after Kentucky Derby winner Medina Spirit tested positive for a substance that is not allowed on race day. Baffert’s camp asked for a stay of the NYRA suspension that was immediately denied. Amira discusses Oklahoma's incredibly dominant softball team, the possible outcomes of the semi finals between Oklahoma and UCLA, and Oklahoma State and Texas, and why this year's competition is getting more media coverage. Then, Brenda shares the latest on horse racing drama including the strangeness of Rich Strike not going for the triple crown, the sad death of last year's sensation Medina Spirit and why Bob Baffert is still the most villainous villain. Next, Jessica discusses the thrilling fortnight of the French Open, including Iga Swiatek and Rafael Nadal's incredible French Open singles' victories. They also talk about the conflicted way tennis is showing Ukrainian solidarity and gender disparity in the night match scheduling. Following this conversation, you'll hear a preview of Brenda's interview with LA Times Sports Editor Iliana Limón Romero, the first Latina to head a newspaper of record's sports' section. Next, they'll burn the worst of sports this week in the Burn Pile. 18WT 053:  HORSE RACING - Medina Spirit Stripped of 2021 Kentucky Derby Win.  Medina Spirit is no longer the winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby. The colt, who died unexpectedly in December, was officially disqualified by Kentucky racing officials on Monday for failing a drug test after winning the race.  Medina Spirit is only the third horse in the race's 147-year history to receive such a penalty after finishing first. The decision means the colt's owner will not collect the $1.8 million first-place check, which was never paid out and will now go to Mandaloun's owner. Churchill Downs, the track in Louisville, Ky., that hosts the Derby, said in a statement that it now recognizes Mandaloun as the winner of the 2021 race. The ruling also erased the Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's seventh Kentucky Derby victory, which had been a record. In addition, Baffert was suspended for 90 days beginning March 8 and fined $7,500. The drug found in Medina Spirit's system was betamethasone, a corticosteroid injected into joints to reduce pain and swelling. Baffert said the drug was applied topically to treat a skin rash on Medina Spirit's hind end.The disqualification puts a new stain on a sport that has been troubled by doping problems and places Baffert's reputation and future in the sport in jeopardy. Baffert, whose horses won the Triple Crown in 2015 and 2018, is thoroughbred horse racing's most recognizable personality. The decision by Kentucky racing officials comes at a time when the Triple Crown season is heating up and the quest for qualifying points to earn a spot in the Derby's starting gate is getting urgent. Churchill Downs had already suspended Baffert from the race for two years and refused to award qualifying points to horses he would train for the 2022 Derby.Baffert has three accomplished 3-year-old colts in his barn — two of them, Corniche and Newgrange, are undefeated. If their owners want to participate in the Derby, they must transfer their horses to another trainer and hope to earn qualifying points in future prep races.Last month, Baffert threatened to sue Churchill Downs if the track did not lift the two-year ban, saying that his right to due process was violated and that he had been unlawfully excluded from Churchill Downs and the Derby.Bill Carstanjen, the chief executive of Churchill Downs, said the complaint was “meritless.” He threatened to countersue if it was filed and emphasized that Baffert was a repeat offender. In all, Baffert's horses have failed 30 drug tests over four decades, including five in a recent 13-month period. The necropsy results for Medina Spirit, who died in December indicated that the colt most likely died of a heart attack.  The disqualification, along with recent guilty pleas and convictions of prominent trainers and veterinarians for.... Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e53C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. Someone's gotta come in second after all! 6:22 For the Louisiana Derby, we LOVE Epicenter, maybe Call Me Midnight to Zacta-macta, and then Trixie likes Zozos as an added option and Weej is with Rattle N Roll on final probation. Paco Lopez's suspension for clipping, creating disaster for Galt and High Oak while he was aboard In Due Time in the Fountain of Youth Stakes. https://paulickreport.com/news/the-biz/careless-riding-jockey-paco-lopez-suspended-14-days-for-fountain-of-youth-ride/ 9:15 Going To Vegas, which Weej part owns through My Racehorse, is in a 1/4 mile turf Race 7 today at Santa Anita on the turf. We ADORE her! 10:27 Woodbine Mohawk, currently running harness races, has a late-night MANDATORY PAYOUT for Race 11 SuperHi5 (pick the finishing order for the first 5 horses). The minimum bet is 20 cents, the take-out is a bettor-friendly 15%, and a big carryover means the pool is already over half a million Canadian dollars, so over $400k USD and it will grow! The race goes off at 11:10 pm EDT if you want a cheap chance at a nice pool. Trixie IS the Lazy Handicapper, always preferring to do one race over multi-race plays. 13:32 Scandal of the WEEK: Trainer Bob Baffert's potential Derby 3 year-olds are finally moving! Well, 4 of them, including the magnificent Messier. https://paulickreport.com/news/triple-crown/baffert-transfers-four-kentucky-derby-contenders-to-other-trainers/ Nice finally to see actual consequences after the awful tragedy of Medina Spirit. We also muse: Is Corniche injured? Is Newgrange not considered a contender? The required removal of Baffert's signage at the Santa Anita stables had to hurt—we're okay with it

The Blackhawks get in return a conditional 2nd round pick from Minnesota, the draft pick will become a first round pick if the Wild make the Western Conference finals.  The Red Wings made no major moves on deadline day.  Detroit sent defensemen Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for forward Oskar Sundqvist, defenseman Jake Walman, as well as the Blues 2nd round draft pick in 2023 draft.  Detroit also traded forward Vladislav Namestnikov to the Dallas Stars in exchange for a 4th round pick in 2024. The panel made the decision in upholding the April 2020 decision by U.S. District Judge Jed S. Rakoff to dismiss a lawsuit by fantasy sports contestants who claimed they were damaged by sign stealing in Major League Baseball. The five men who sued participated in fantasy contests hosted by DraftKings from 2017 to 2019. NFL – Blockbuster: Colts get QB Matt Ryan in trade with Falcons The Indianapolis Colts have acquired their new quarterback, Matt Ryan, in a trade with the Atlanta Falcons. Indy is sending a third-round pick, No. 82 overall, for the longtime Falcons star. Ryan led Atlanta to its second Super Bowl appearance following the 2016 season. That was the same season Ryan was named the league’s MVP. His arrival means the Colts will be starting a new opening-day quarterback for the sixth consecutive year. The rebuilding Falcons quickly announced the signing of Marcus Mariota, a former No. 2 overall pick. The 28-year-old Mariota played sparingly over the past two seasons as a backup to Derek Carr with the Las Vegas Raiders. NFL – QB Stafford: ‘Right time and place’ to give Rams discount Matthew Stafford realizes he almost certainly could have gotten more money in a contract extension after his outstanding debut season with the Los Angeles Rams. Stafford admitted his priority isn’t more dollars. It’s more rings, and he believes his new four-year, $160 million deal through 2026 gives him the best opportunity to win them with the defending Super Bowl champions. Stafford recognizes the absurdity of considering a deal with $135 million in guaranteed money and a reported $60 million signing bonus to be some sort of discount, yet that’s what it is for a proven veteran quarterback of Stafford’s talents. Golf – Still out of sight, Mickelson decides to sit out the Masters Phil Mickelson won’t be playing in the Masters this year. Mickelson has been out of sight since inflammatory remarks against the Saudi-funded rival league and the PGA Tour. He’s no longer listed under players expected to be compete in this year’s Masters. Instead, his name has been moved on the official website to past champions not playing. It will be the first time since 1994 that Mickelson is not at the Masters. He lost sponsorship deals after an interview in which he says he was willing to overlook human rights atrocities if it meant getting leverage over the PGA Tour. Horse Racing – Judge rejects Baffert stay but delays suspension to April 4 A Kentucky judge has denied Bob Baffert’s request to stay his 90-day suspension but delayed it until April 4 to allow his representatives to seek emergency relief through the state’s Court of Appeals. Stewards suspended and fined Baffert $7,500 last month and disqualified Medina Spirit as the Kentucky Derby winner after determining the now-deceased horse had the corticosteroid betamethasone in his system last May. Baffert is fighting that decision. Franklin Circuit Judge Thomas Wingate said Monday that the court understands the gravity of its ruling on Baffert but said that absent relief from a reviewing court, the stewards’ penalties will begin next month. A Baffert attorney said they would appeal.
