This is part 2 of a three part conversation with Michaela Hempen and Carmen Heritier. In the spring of 2024 Carmen sent her three year old quarter horse mare, Malu, to Michaela for three months of training. In Part 1 we introduced Carmen and Malu, and then Michaela talked about the early steps in her training. Malu was a well-prepared horse, so the training flowed along. Part 1 ended with a question about adding leg speed and that's where we begin in this episode. How do you get transitions into trot and canter? We also talk about the squashed road kill lesson, but you will have to listen to the episode top find out what that is.
Michaela Hempen has been a guest many times on this podcast. We began in Episode 27 with single-subject design and then Michaela introduced us to Blondie, the mare who was the subject of the research project she did on cribbing. We're returning to Blondie again in this conversation. Michaela will be contrasting her experience restarting Blondie under saddle with that of Malu, a three year old quarter horse mare. Malu belongs to Carmen, a dog trainer and now horse owner. She sent Malu to Michaela to get her started under saddle. In this episode Carmen describes her own training background which includes an interest in canine fitness and balance. She introduces us to Malu and shares her reasons for choosing Michaela to help her get Malu started under saddle. We talk about shaping with both positive and negative reinforcement, and the beginning lessons Michaela covered with Malu.

Welcome to Xbox Game Passengers. Once a month, host Derek and a guest will dissect and discuss just one game available on Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass service, which was chosen for them (usually) at random. Whether the game is a magical or a horrible experience, they'll force themselves through it, share their thoughts, and let you know whether or not the game is worth your time! At the end of each episode, they'll also randomly select the game for the following show, so you always know what's coming up on the next adventure. From Octodad creators Young Horses comes Bugsnax, a nigh-indescribable adventure with cutesy graphics, adult humour, and an astoundingly unique assortment of half bug half snack creatures. Dougie returns to the show to chat all about this unique experience. Bugsnax takes you on a journey to Snaktooth Island, home of the legendary half-bug half-snack creatures, Bugsnax. Invited by intrepid explorer Elizabert Megafig, you arrive to discover your host nowhere to be found, her camp in shambles, and her followers scattered across the island alone… and hungry! It's up to you to solve the mysteries of Snaktooth Island: What happened to Lizbert? What are Bugsnax and where do they come from? But most of all, why do they taste SO GOOD? In this episode, I'll talk about raising baby horses to be solid, reliable adults, discuss some do's and don'ts, and the most common mistakes people make with young horses. I'll also go into what you should and should not do when it comes to training weanlings, foals and yearlings—and why. Finally, I'll share how you can create the ideal environment for young horses, and give them the enrichment they need to start life out on the right hoof. Plus, in the What the Hay? Q&A segment at the end of the episode, I'll answer questions straight from listeners about a reactive and temperamental horse, a horse that tries to jump out of the round pen when being worked, appropriate expectations when training an older horse, and how to prepare a horse to carry a parade flag. What do you need to focus on in those 3- and 4-year old years? How do you cope with the pressure to “not mess up” a young horse? What matters most in the early years for a horse? Top British eventer Piggy March has an FEI record the length of a novel and has had many illustrious wins to her name including Badminton, Burghley, the European Eventing Championships and the World Equestrian Games, to name a few. Today on Equestrian Voices, Piggy joins host Caroline Culbertson to give a peek inside her program and philosophies with young horses. They discuss: Exactly how they go about the initial “breaking in” process at Piggy's farm Assessing the potential and talent of a 3-year-old (or whether to look the other way until they're a bit older!) The mindset to have as a rider and trainer of young horses Tack, equipment, and management tips for the young horse What to keep in mind when they go to their first show And much more. This week the gang played Bugsnax by; Young Horses. Bugsnax is a first person bug catching adventure game. Would you rather eat a snack bug or a bug snack? The mere premise of this first-person adventure game sounds absurd… and then you find out that it comes from the same zany studio that brought you Octodad. The team over at Young Horses combined bugs and snacks into the game's eponymous creatures and now a listener has tasked our hosts with sampling this unusual offering. Will the colorful art style and unique premise prove delectable, or will it leave a bad taste in their mouths? Historically, games involving bugs lean toward horror, but this game definitely suggests a much more light-hearted approach. Does that mean Chris will be free to enjoy the experience, safe from insect-induced jump-scares? On the topic of friendly critters, we all know that Tom enjoys playing Pokémon, so it seems inevitable that some comparisons will be made to that franchise in his review. If you want to know if those comparisons are favorable, however, it looks like you'll need to hit play and give this episode a listen! What do you think? Let us know!
