I sit down with Stefanos Koutsoumpis, a men's coach based in Athens, Greece, who holds a PhD in physics and a hard-won understanding of what it actually means to feel happy. Not perform happiness — actually experience it. He walks me through how chronic overthinking was actually a symptom of emotional suppression, how he discovered mindfulness through Sam Harris and eventually trained with the Oxford Mindfulness Centre, and how he came to build a coaching practice specifically for men — a demographic he describes as often more willing to open up to a stranger at a bar than to the people closest to them. We go deep on men and community, why the "lone wolf" approach quietly destroys people, how hope has two components (belief and a path), and why experiential learning — getting in the fight, not studying it — is the only real way forward. If your life is good, why does drinking still feel so hard to figure out? This can be one of the most confusing experiences with alcohol because it doesn't match the usual story people are told about why drinking becomes a problem. When there's no major crisis or obvious unhappiness, it's easy to wonder what's wrong with you. Tune in this week to learn why dissatisfaction is a normal part of being human, how avoiding unmet desires can fuel overdrinking, and why the urge often has less to do with alcohol and more to do with your relationship to restriction, deprivation, and wanting. This episode also explores how the drink archetypes reveal the emotional promise alcohol seems to offer and why understanding your relationship to dissatisfaction can change the way you approach drinking entirely. In this deeply honest and funny episode, we talk about self-sabotage, burnout, body image, ADHD overwhelm, emotional contagion, perfectionism, and the fear of slowing down. One host opens up about gaining weight and the shame spiral that followed, while the other calls out the real culprit: feeling defeated before even trying. From driving to Costco and leaving with In-N-Out instead of groceries, to the exhausting pressure of productivity and the inability to truly rest, this episode dives into the psychology of why change feels impossible when you're already overwhelmed. We also explore: • Why burnout kills motivation • The hidden link between shame and self-sabotage • The pressure to always be “productive” • Why we struggle to feel content or fulfilled • Emotional contagion and childhood emotional patterns • The fear of stopping, slowing down, or “not running” anymore This episode blends mental health, comedy, therapy insights, and real conversations about anxiety, depression, motivation, and personal growth. Why do we still feel anxious… even when we have more than enough? In this message from Matthew 6:19–34, we explore one of Jesus' most direct teachings about money, trust, and the condition of the human heart.Jesus doesn't just talk about finances. He exposes something deeper:what we treasure is shaping the entire direction of our lives. If you've ever felt:• stressed about the future• stuck chasing security• unsure why peace feels out of reachthis message is for you.The truth is simple, but challenging:You cannot serve two masters. What you trust will shape how you live. And wherever your treasure rests… your life will follow. This sermon walks through:• Why treasure trains the heart• What Jesus meant by a “good eye” and an “evil eye”• The real meaning of “mammon”• Why anxiety reveals what we actually trust• How to live with open hands instead of fearThis is not about guilt. It's about freedom.Scripture: Matthew 6:19–34Chandler Street Church of Christ – Kilgore, Texas#JesusTeaching#ChristianSermon#FaithOverFear#BiblicalTruth#Matthew6#AnxietyAndFaith#TrustGod#KingdomOfGod#MoneyAndFaith#SpiritualGrowth#ChurchSermon#ChristianLiving#Discipleship#FaithInAction#SermonClip

The Gemara poses the question of where in the Torah we find an allusion to Haman. It then proceeds to give a surprising answer – citing a pasuk from the story of Adam and Havah's sin in Gan Eden . Hashem said to Adam after the sin, המן העץ אשר ציויתיך לבלתי אכל ממנו אכלת – "Did you eat from the tree which I commanded you not to eat from?" (Bereshit 3:11). The word המן (" Ha'min ") is spelled the same as "Haman," and thus it is here where the Torah makes a subtle reference to the villain of the Purim story. This seems very peculiar. What connection is there between the story of Adam in Gan Eden and the story of Purim? I once saw a very powerful answer. The snake succeeded in luring Adam and Havah to sin by drawing their attention toward the one tree that was off-limits. They had a perfect life in Gan Eden – except that there was this one tree which they could not enjoy. Adam and Havah focused on this one thing that was missing, that wasn't exactly right, and this is how they were led to sin. The same happened to the Jews during Haman's time. The Gemara says that one of the reasons why Hashem brought Haman's decree is that the Jews participated in Ahashverosh's party. The Jews of Persia lived very comfortably. They had plenty of food and plenty of wine. But they couldn't stay away from Ahashverosh's feast. Instead of focusing on all that they had, and all that was good in their lives, they were lured by what was off-limits, by what they should not have been getting involved with. This is a mistake so many of us make. We complain about what's wrong in our lives, rather than seeing just how wonderful our lives are. People complain about their spouse – forgetting that marriage is a wonderful blessing. People complain about their children – forgetting that having children is a wonderful blessing. People complain about their job – forgetting that having work is a wonderful blessing. People complain about having so many weddings and other events to attend – forgetting that having lots of friends who are making semahot is a wonderful blessing. According to one view, the forbidden tree in Gan Eden was a grape vine, and the "fruit" of which Adam and Havah partook was actually wine. Wine clouds a person's judgment, and so it skewed their perspective. Every Shabbat, we correct the sin of Adam and Havah through the mitzvah of kiddush – by using wine for the exact opposite purpose. On Shabbat, we drink wine to feel content, to feel happy, to feel gratified about our lives. We rectify Adam and Havah's mistake by focusing on all that is good in our lives, on everything we have, and feeling grateful for it. The Megillah tells that it was on the seventh day of Ahashverosh's feast when he ordered Vashti to come, and she disobeyed. The pasuk says, ביום השביעי כטוב לב המלך ביין – "On the seventh day, when the king's heart was happy with wine." The Gemara interprets this pasuk to mean that this was Shabbat – the seventh day of the week – and the "king" refers to Hashem, the King of the world. On Shabbat, Hashem saw the Jews making kiddush , and in this merit, He put into place the sequence of events that would lead to Ester's rise to the throne and the foiling of Haman's plot. The mitzvah of kiddush , which is all about feeling content and happy with what one has, marked the rectification of the Jews' participation in Ahashverosh's feast. We need to stop listening to the "snake" that tries to draw our attention to the "forbidden tree," to what we're missing, to what's not right, to the "problems" in our lives. We need to instead remember that our lives are beautiful. Our lives are wonderful. No, our lives aren't perfect, but they're not meant to be. When we focus on our blessings, on all that is right about our lives, we will be so much happier, we will complain so much less, and life will be so much more enjoyable and fulfilling.
People who have strong spiritual practices tend to be very empathetic people. And when others are suffering sometimes we feel guilty when we have risen above and found practices and tools to create a good life. But life is for learning. And if you did your inner work and are out of the realm of suffering it is your destiny to feel joy and happiness. Instead of feeling empathy it is compassion that is being called for when looking at the lives of others. It is time for you to feel harmony, peace, and ease in your life as you do your inner work. Honor all you have done.Join this fabulous show and listen to Renee and Sandra talk about how to hold yourself in ease in a world where people are learning important lessons through some form of loss and suffering. In this episode of Do The Work | Mindset Mastery, I open up about something I wrestle with constantly and that is the tension between pressure and gratitude. Running a business, leading a household, being a husband and a father all come with responsibility. That responsibility can quietly turn into suffering if I am not careful about where my mind goes. I talk about how easy it is to get trapped in comparison, future goals, past mistakes, and the weight of everything I think I should be doing. My mind moves fast. Too fast at times. When I let it run unchecked, it creates pressure that feels overwhelming. Not because life is bad, but because I stop being present. I stop checking myself. I forget how far I have come. Marriage and family play a big role in this conversation. What people see from the outside is never the full picture. Carla and I carry a lot together. We take on the challenges of running a large operation, supporting agents, and navigating life as partners. Sometimes the stress leaks into the home. Sometimes we say things we do not mean. I have learned that the real suffering does not come from the situation itself but from holding onto anger, shame, and resentment instead of processing it and moving forward. I share honestly that positivity does not come naturally to me. It is something I work at every day. I wake up and my mind wants to go negative. So I fight back with intention. I listen to books and podcasts focused on awareness and discipline. I move my body. I create space to slow my thoughts down. These practices help but even then it is easy to forget to check the thermometer and realize I am overheating mentally. One moment that stopped me in my tracks came from listening to a story on a podcast while cleaning my car. A forest ranger survived being crushed under a fallen tree in the rainforest. After hours trapped under rubble she survived with barely a scratch. The next morning she was lying in a hammock saying one simple phrase over and over. I am alive. Hearing that broke me open. That moment pulled me back to being seventeen years old after weeks in the hospital not knowing if I would live. I remember driving home and seeing the world differently. The sky was brighter. Everything felt beautiful. I was overwhelmed with gratitude just to be here. I was alive. Somewhere along the way I forgot how powerful that realization is. I reflect on how easy it is to move from praying for a life to rushing through it once you have it. I remind myself that everything I have today was once a prayer. The suffering I create now is unnecessary. It comes from living in the past or racing into the future instead of standing firmly in the present. The solution is not complicated but it does require honesty and action. Be here. Tell your spouse you love them. Tell your kids how proud you are. Call your parents. Look in the mirror and say you are proud of yourself. When I focus on what I can do right now everything else eventually takes care of itself. Life is good right now. The work is learning how to believe that and live from it. Reader Reflection Questions Where has your mind been spending most of its time lately in the past the future or the present What parts of your life were once prayers that you may now be overlooking What is one small action you can take today to be more present with the people who matter most Notable Quotes I do not know if I am okay but I am alive Worry and anxiety are caused by too much focus on the future while guilt regret and resentment come from dwelling in the past Everything I have today was once a prayer Follow A.Z. A recent online survey of more than 10,000 transplant recipients across the U.S. and Canada found that ninety-two percent had side effects from their immunosuppressive medications. And while most patients trust their care teams, one in four skips doses because of their side effects. Four in ten skip due to cost. Today, I'm joined by Anne Bina, a kidney transplant recipient, and Nurse Practitioner, Nicole McCormick, to discuss the importance of immunosuppressive or anti-rejection medications and how to manage side effects associated with them. In this episode we heard from: Nicole McCormick is a Nurse Practitioner with AdventHealth Porter Transplant Institute in Denver, CO. She has been working in Transplant Nephrology since 2015, and she worked as a heart transplant coordinator starting in 2012. Nicole attended the University of Colorado for her Doctor of Nursing Practice as well as her Master's, and she received her Bachelor of Nursing from Thomas Jefferson University. Nicole enjoys spending time with her family and fur babies. She enjoys strength training and teaches yoga in her community. Nicole is an avid reader and lifelong student. Anne Bina-I live in Casper, WY but I was born and raised in WI. When I was 9 I had strep throat and a couple months later I was in the hospital with nephritis. Doctors told my parents that it could reoccur later in my life. I attended the University of WI where I met my husband. He was in the Air Force ROTC, so after we graduated he began his military career. I was blessed with two daughters - Jenny & Kris. Some 30 years later (1992)my husband was stationed at Whiteman AFB, MO. I had just completed my master's degree, and I was diagnosed with kidney failure with FSGS - all related back to my case of strep. My husband retired from the Air Force in 1998 and we returned to WI. I was placed on the UNOS Transplant list in 1998 at U of WI Transplant Center. By August of 1999, my kidney function had gotten to the point that it it was time to start dialysis. For me at least, I was only on dialysis for less than 2 months when a coordinator from U of Wisconsin called me on Oct 15th 1999 that they had a kidney for me. She told me that my donor was a 16 year old that had been involved in a car accident. Later, I received a picture of “Ryan” my donor, from his family. He is indeed my HERO! Here I am almost 26 years later - LIFE IS GOOD! From 2008 till we moved to Casper in 2016 , I was the Director of a non-profit helping seniors in the Milwaukee area. And for the last 20 years I have been trying to “give back” by being a volunteer and public speaker, first in Wisconsin with the WI Donor Network and now here in Wyoming with the WY Donor Alliance. I have also become active with the National Kidney Foundation (NKF). Besides being an Ambassador with their on-line site, HealthUnlocked; I have also become a Kidney Advocate. This has involved working with the Wyoming Legislature trying to get the “Living Donor Protection Act”(LDPA) passed. Governor Gordon signed it into WY Law on February 24, 2023. You can love your life and still feel a quiet sadness. You can be grateful, surrounded by your kids, doing the best you know how and still feel something heavy in your chest that you can't quite explain. In this episode of REBUILT, Michael-David speaks directly to a confusing emotional experience many men have during the holidays but rarely talk about: feeling sad even when nothing is “wrong.” Drawing from psychology, lived experience, and the unique way men carry responsibility, this conversation explores why joy and sadness can coexist ... and why that doesn't mean you're ungrateful, broken, or failing. Michael-David shares a personal moment from Christmas Eve with his kids, reflecting on the weight of time passing, financial pressure, legacy, and the awareness that some chapters of fatherhood quietly begin to close. Through the lens of a seasoned psychologist, he explains concepts like emotional layering and anticipatory grief in simple, relatable language that helps men understand what's actually happening inside them. In our most light and peppy episode to date, Danielle Kartes reminds us that joy is available today—not if or when. In this upbeat, heart-forward conversation, the celebrity chef behind Rustic Joyful Food shares how a closed restaurant, tight budgets, and a whole lot of grit became the soil for fourteen books, national TV appearances, and a ministry of encouragement. We swap stories about building a resilient family culture around the table, the healing power of rhythm and routine, and why “Dear dinnertime, we love you!” can change a home's atmosphere. Explore Danielle's world (and her recipes by season) at RusticJoyfulFood.com Parents, you'll love the practicals: getting kids confident in the kitchen, “flip it or skip it” ingredient swaps, toddler-tapas starters, and the lost skills every child can master—multiplying a recipe, seasoning with savvy, and knowing when a cake is done. Danielle's brand-new book The Best Kids Cookbook is a joyful on-ramp to all of it. Also, check out the other books mentioned in this episode! Daily Boost Podcast Show Notes When Life Is Good, Why Mess It Up? July 1, 2025 | Episode 5127Host: Scott Smith Scott dives into the two fundamental forces that drive everything in your life: people and money. You're either dealing with too many or not enough of both, and that's what's keeping you awake at night. But here's the kicker – when life is already good, why would you shake things up just to chase more money? This episode cuts through the noise with straight talk about growth, joy versus happiness, and why you might be hoarding personal development without actually transforming. Scott shares his perspective on living the good life and staying balanced while you grow. Scott recounts a powerful conversation with a friend about living the good life and the freedom that comes with it. The friend posed a game-changing question: "When life is good, why would you do something else only to make more money?" This simple question exposes how we often disrupt our own goodness chasing dollars we might not even need. The story illustrates the trap many fall into – working harder and harder, adding more junk on top of junk, becoming "hoarders of life" instead of focusing on transformation and what's already working. Everything in life comes down to two problems: people and money. Every sleepless night, every worry, every challenge connects to having too many or not enough of either. Growth and change are built into your DNA – you can't escape the drive to evolve, but you can stop yourself from acting on it by holding onto junk instead of transforming. Joy beats happiness every time because happiness is fleeting and temporary, while joy comes from within and lasts longer. "You become a hoarder of life. A lot of you guys are hoarders of personal growth." "There is nobody in the world that you should take a chance on that will disrupt that good life that you have." "Growth and change are what makes most people strive for something in their life – it's in your DNA to want to do that because anything other than growing and changing is dying." Accept that everything comes down to people and money, then get your head out of the sand and start dealing with both intentionally. Focus on transformation instead of accumulation by getting rid of the junk before adding new goals or responsibilities to your life. Ask yourself the key question before making any major change: "Will this enhance my good life or disrupt it?" Search for The Daily Boost on Apple Podcasts and Spotify.
