In this podcast with Mike Garry, we focus on the importance and value of expressing our language through poetry. In a truly illuminating conversation, where Mike also kindly reads two poems aloud, we get into a whole range of discussion points about the importance of reading and language, his work with thousands of kids a year, and finding empathy, knowledge and understanding through poetry. I'd imagine this will stick with me for a while - thanks for your time Mike! Listen here! Mike Garry was a librarian for 15 years before becoming a poet. Mike became a “Champion Reader” recognized for his work in promoting reading to young people. His poetry career began when he started to read his poems to the hundreds of young people he worked with during study sessions. They loved what they heard and encouraged him to perform at live poetry events and Slams, which he did, instantly winning prizes throughout the UK. Mike started performing his poems in Prisons, Young Offenders units, Mental Health Hospitals, Children's Homes and local pubs. Shaun Ryder of Happy Mondays recently described Mike's poetry as “The best street poetry I've ever heard” and iconic designer Peter Saville described Mikes as a “genius” He was Poet in Residence at Strangeways Prison, and has works closely with Manchester United, the BBC, The Barclays Premier league, Manchester Museum of Science and Industry, Manchester Art Gallery and works at literature festivals throughout the world.

Jem's first love will always be poetry, yet he never fails to make people laugh and that's where comedy comes in. Listen to Jem's poetry, learn from his inspiring story of overcoming his alcohol addiction and hear his journey on becoming a poet and comedian. He has also continued to do some great work during Lockdown and you can find out what he does. More about Jem - - - > I've always written poetry and actually “wrote” my first poem when I was 4 years old, although I only really started performing my work after joining the Batley Poets in June 2017. Since then I've performed in many venues – including the Houses of Parliament – for audiences from 4 – 400 people. I usually aim for humour in my poems, though I do write some serious stuff as well, I'm particularly fond of writing parody lyrics to popular songs and have composed versions of Cool for Cats, I Will Survive, My Favourite Things, The Day Before You Came and many others. My influences and inspirations are John Cooper Clarke, Mike Garry, Toria Garbutt and Kate Tempest – the first 3 of whom I have met! I am 61, a sober alcoholic for nearly 17 years and hopefully my first collection – entitled No Limericks Left in This Vehicle – will be published this year, in aid of the NACOA (National Association for Children Of Alcoholics). I first heard Mike Garry on his beautiful ode to Anthony H Wilson. You know the one - Saint Anthony. It made Number 1 in the charts. It featured Manchester's finest, it features strings, it was beautiful. At that point I didn't know Mike. I met him a year or two later at one of the best festivals I've been to, The Good Life Experience. I stood and watched as Mike wove emotions and images with words. He started a poem about his son and the tears started with me. I won't tell you why, suffice to say that I missed my son who was off to University. Over the next few years I got to know Mike. He is a lyrical genius. He comes from Manchester and we share a youth. we share a love of the same bands. We share an era. We share a decade-defining movement. we are also both open and vulnerable, but not weak. This podcast is exactly that: open and vulnerable. We talk about Mike's youth in Manchester, caring for his dad, and the chaos of a beautiful big family. I absolutely loved recording it. Mike is a great man and this is a great conversation

Moss Side Gym Stories - Part 1: Moss Side is a small neighbourhood just outside of Manchester's city centre. In the 19th century Elizabeth Gaskell, inspired by the area, made her literary debut with the novel Mary Barton. She described Moss Side as a place of rural charm where Victorian workers and their families came to talk, play and relax. By the later part of the 20th century, the green fields that Gaskell knew had been replaced by housing estates, and Moss Side's reputation for riots, gangs and guns had spread nationwide. Growing up in Moss Side, Manchester's award winning poet Mike Garry, saw another side. Among its terraced rows Mike discovered a place where he could hear an echo of the qualities that caused Gaskell to put pen to paper - the Moss Side Leisure Centre. In the first of a two part programme Mike returns to the leisure centre to perform his epic poem, Men's Morning, an ode to the Friday morning male patrons of the centre. He spends time with the men who use the gym today to discover what, if anything has changed since he wrote the poem 20 years ago. In the next programme Jackie Kay, acclaimed poet and Scotland's new Makar, writes her own poem inspired by time spent at the leisure centre, this time focusing on the women who use it. Part 2: Jackie Kay, acclaimed writer and Scotland's new Makar, writes a poem, commissioned by the BBC and inspired by the women who use Manchester's Moss Side Leisure Centre. Close to the Centre are streets named in honour of one of the city's most famous residents, Elizabeth Gaskell, who moved to Manchester in the 1830s and knew these streets, as fields. In her debut novel, Mary Barton, Gaskell described this area as a place of serene rural beauty, where Manchester's families would come to walk, talk, rest and rejuvenate. By the later part of the 20th century, the green fields had been replaced by housing estates. Moss Side's reputation for riots, gangs and guns spread nationwide but its ability to inspire writers remained intact, and a peaceful oasis - otherwise known as the Moss Side Leisure Centre - could still be found. In the first of these two programmes, the poet Mike Garry returned to the Moss Side Leisure Centre to perform his epic poem, Men's Morning, inspired by the Centre and the men who used it. In this programme, Jackie Kay premieres her 21st century response - Moss Side Mirrors - an ode to the women who, like their 19th century antecedents immortalised by Elizabeth Gaskell, have found in this neighbourhood a place to escape from the pressures of daily life - to breathe deeply, unwind, and renew themselves. Produced in Salford by Claire Press and Ekene Akalawu.
