In episode 122 I try my darndest to help clients suffering from post election PTSD and pretty much fail. I'm too pissed off myself. But I do grapple with can you fix dumb, should we try to understand the other side, are one issue voters the problem, why does the working class stab themselves in the back, do most Americans hate smart people, is someone with a combover a pathological liar, is there no level of hypocrisy the right won't sink to, what can the gateway theory of communication teach us about today's political climate, what will conservatives say when America goes over the cliff, does the Old Testament advise women to use the rhythm method of contraception, is there a Hail Mary pass to make to thwart the Trump Agenda and what album do I listen to that always gives me peace and serenity?  All that in under 19 minutes.  SUBSCRIBE and THRIVE!!!!!

It turns out Keith hasn't had partnered sex in some time, so he's simultaneously adjusting to the situation and looking for a way to change it. Fortunately for us, that probably only serves to increase his interest in discussing sex and relationships. If a woman absolutely doesn't want to take hormonal birth control, what are the reasonable options for them? Is she just in for a lot of semen in her mouth, or does the rhythm method actually work if used very carefully? What makes a sex act gay? Does that even mean anything, or is the real distinction between acts that are more and less dominant and submissive? Does a man wanting to be penetrated in some way suggest something about him? And, what to do if you're in a dead bedroom situation, you try to communicate, your partner listens to YMMV, but there's still no spark? We get a lot of our questions from Reddit, so for our listeners' enjoyment, here are links to some of the questions we discussed this week: https://ymmv.me/127/two-condoms https://ymmv.me/127/gay https://ymmv.me/127/dead-bedroom Twitter: @ymmvpod Facebook: ymmvpod Email: ymmvpod@gmail.com

If you menstruate and have ever experienced pain or discomfort associated with your cycle, you've likely been told that it's normal, and to take hormonal birth control as a treatment option. While this is certainly a viable and beneficial option for some, for others this answer can feel dismissive, especially if you're looking to avoid hormonal birth control or want to dig into WHY you're experiencing these symptoms. These experiences can leave those seeking to better understand their bodies feel as though they have no control, and in a society where access to reproductive care (and even information) is increasingly hamstrung, this loss of control is especially disempowering. Enter Lisa Hendrickson-Jack. She's a Holistic Reproductive Health Practitioner and Fertility Awareness Educator, and in 2019 she sat down with Erin to get into the nitty gritty of everything you ever wanted to know about your period. Tune in to hear Lisa highlight why your cycle is a vital sign, the role blood plays, what's considered “normal” with periods and PMS, how to know your fertile window, differences in birth control options, and how cycle tracking can not only give you insight into your reproductive and overall health, but also help you plan your life. Whether you're trying to get pregnant, trying to NOT get pregnant, or just trying to understand your body better, this is an especially relevant episode that offers up powerful information to take charge of your fertility. Making a Scene Presents an Interview with Polly O'Keary of Polly O'Keary and the Rhythm Method!A century ago, blues was born in the fields of the South, played on porches and in little backwoods bars by kerosene lamp. The times have changed, and it's a rare blues musician who grew up picking cotton and going home to learn to play by the light of a kerosene lamp.Polly O'Keary certainly didn't. Well, that is, she didn't pick cotton. She picked apples. But she learned to read music by kerosene lamp, in a log cabin in a remote part of Washington State. She started playing in ex-pat bars in Mexico at 16, and Eastern Washington watering holes for rural farm workers at the age of 17. She dropped out of school with an 8th grade education, married a prison-bound man at the age of 18 and by the time she was 21 had logged more stage hours than most musicians twice her age. She'd drunk as much as a fair number of them as well.

Did you that there are non-hormonal, peer-reviewed, evidence-based, ways to prevent (and achieve) pregnancy that are all about helping women know their bodies better, can also help to achieve pregnancy, and recognized by the CDC? In episode 12, I’m talking with Louise Boychuk, a registered nurse and instructor of the Marquette method of natural family planning. This is NOT your grandmother’s rhythm method of old. This is a peer-reviewed, evidence-based, non-hormonal approach to avoiding (AND achieving) pregnancy. Natural Family Planning (NFP), also known as Fertility Based Awareness Methods (FABMs) in the scientific community, refers to methods that use signs from a woman’s body to determine when she is fertile (and, also importantly, when she is most likely not fertile). Methods can use a variety of different biological markers, from cervical mucous, to hormone levels in urine that can be tested at home, to body temperature, and more. This is easily one of my favorite topics, most notably because I used to be ardently opposed to what I thought the Church taught on sex and marriage. As you’ll hear in the episode, up until my early 20s, I thought the Church was crazy when it came to its teaching on sexual ethics and not using contraception. My (wrong) understanding was that the Church just wanted women to be, as the old adage goes, “barefoot and pregnant”, forever and ever. (FYI-To all of those who are currently in that scenario, I see you, I hear you, I get you, and I hope you’ll hang in there with me through this post and this episode.) Enter a good friend, a lot of reading, holy priests, wonderful speakers, and a 2-year stint as a Catholic missionary. I was led on a journey that to joy at discovering the truth of how insanely awesome God’s design for sex and marriage is, and we're going to dive into that in this episode. These teachings aren’t in place because the Church thinks sex is bad, it’s because the Church knows sex is so good, and sacred, and important- it needs to be treated as such! Here’s the TL;DR version of the Church’s teaching on sex and marriage: Sex is meant to be both unitive and procreative. Unitive meaning that it brings a man and woman closer together emotionally, physically, all the things. Procreative in that it’s open to life, so no barriers, either physical or chemical. Abstaining from sex during fertile times to avoid pregnancy for just reasons is still in line with the church’s teaching because there is no use of something to purposefully block fertility. As Louise says in our episode, “Marquette method does not equal opposed to life, it just equals good science.” Many providers aren’t aware of the evidence (cue my eyeroll when I read through my discharge paper work after having my baby and under the ‘Birth Control’ section, my OBGYN wrote ‘rhythm method’), the good news is that there is peer-reviewed evidence-based journal articles. As you’ll hear in the podcast, the information is slowly disseminating, and even the CDC updated their public information regarding FABMs to more accurately provide pregnancy prevention statistics. It’s our job as practitioners to get the news out there. We chat about a lot, including: ⁃ The science behind NFP (specifically the Marquette Method) ⁃ The effectiveness of various NFP methods at avoiding pregnancy ⁃ How NFP fits in with Church teaching ⁃ Joys and challenges of being an NFP instructor ⁃ How to become a Marquette instructor (you have to be a healthcare professional, which is perfect for the listeners of this podcast!) I also have a lot of resources that I mention that won't fit in this show notes space, so visit www.practicingcatholicmedicine.com for a lil blog post that expands on this and for links to all the things.

We use smartphones for so many things throughout the day – they can be cameras, grocery lists, work stations, more. But…can they also be birth control? Fertility tracking, or menstrual tracking, apps are getting more and more popular – one was even recently approved by the FDA as birth control. On this episode, Dr. Eliza Bennett talks about how fertility tracking apps work, whether they’re effective as contraception, and important questions about data security to consider before using a menstrual tracking app.

The Plagued Raven's music isn't easily boxed into a word or two, but the one-time solo guitar project of Raven Kyle has branched out with its third album Celeste to add the vocals of Katie Thompson (of Chiasma, from Episode 081) to its moody soundscapes. The resulting short tracks are perhaps best described by the artistic term chiaroscuro (the contrast of light and shade), and they're probably not what you think of when you hear that only guitar and voice are involved. Kyle and Katie both describe to host Mark Ashby the circumstances that brought them together, how their creative flow is achieved since they live six hours apart, and what they tell people their music is intended to evoke. Yes-expert Roman Guzman stops in next to trade questions with Mark about various common and obscure topics relating to the band (such as which band member once provided real-time DVD commentary to Roman). Finally, a Potentially Unpopular Position that encourages you to think emotion over technique when considering who is the "best" on an instrument. Find Your Rhythm & Method! Establishing a Healthy Self-Care Routine

The 2nd installment of the Internal Wokeness series is indeed an episode you need to listen to. As we know, today's world is filled with a number of distractions, traumas, and stresses. It's so easy to be constantly on the go that we may forget how to slow down, stop, and reflect. This week's episode we highlighted the importance of establishing a healthy self-care routine that will align your mind, body, and spirit with one another. We also noted that the term self-care is more than a trending topic or buzz word -- it is a way of life; a mentality that will ultimately assist us all in the fight against social injustice. As Activist, Author, and Poet Audre Lorde stated, "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence. It is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." We stand behind this statement because we recognize that during these stressful times in our culture, caring for others and fighting for our community can take a toll on one's mental& emotional health. Therefore it is important that we begin to fight for a space in which we can establish a way to care for ourselves, without feeling shameful when we decide to do so.  The first article, 45 Self-Care Practices for a Healthy Mind, Body, *& Soul published by tinybuddha.com serves as a guiding tool in establishing your own ways of self care, and provides several ideas you can incorporate in your daily life.  The second article we highlighted is titled, Healers of Color, on Why Self-Care is not Self-Indulgence. An article published by colorlines.com. This piece offers different explanations for why our community needs to learn how to care for and love one's self. We also noted that though embracing a healthy self care routine is not the final solution to achieving wholeness, it is one step in the process.  Finding one's rhythm and method requires willingness, commitment, and consistency. It is not something that establishes itself over night but instead takes time. Through this episode we hope to encourage all of you l to recognize it is okay to take time for yourself and get back to making sure you are good. The more we are able to establish a healthy love and relationship with ourselves the better we will be for our loved ones and our community. Peace!

In this special edition of my Fertility Awareness Reality Series, I interview Leda. Leda is one of my current clients, and she wanted to be part of the series to share her experience learning fertility awareness to use as hormone free birth control. One of the key takeaways that Leda shares in this episode how she has learned to interpret her fertility on a day to day basis instead of using past charts to predict her fertility. Leda's experience is also unique, because she somehow managed to escape hormonal contraceptive use altogether, and has what I lovingly refer to as "virgin cycles". In this episode, I pull back the curtain and show you inside a real client session, and you get to see exactly what it's like to work with me one-on-one! There is still time for you to apply to join my April 2017 Group Programs! Make sure to head over to the group program page and apply today to reserve your spot. Topics discussed in today's episode Leda's story & how she managed to avoid ever using hormonal contraceptives How to get used to the idea that you can't predict when you'll ovulate Being patient through the learning process, which typically takes 2-3 full cycles Using fertility awareness successfully to avoid pregnancy Is your period fertile? What is the semen elimination technique and how does it help you use fertility awareness more effectively? What is the difference between arousal fluid and cervical mucus? What factors can throw off your temperatures? Today's episode is a bit different than my recent interview podcasts. Instead of having a guest on the show, this episode is a replay of a presentation that I recently facilitated for Darou Wellness in Toronto. In case you don't know me already a few things you might want to know are that I trained as a Justisse Body Literacy Advocate with Justisse Healthworks for Women several years ago, I have been charting my own menstrual cycles using the Fertility Awareness Method for the past 13 years or so, and I am the founder of this awesome blog as well as the Fertility Friday Podcast! In this episode, I cover the basics of the Fertility Awareness Method including the 3 fertile signs, cervical mucus, basal body temperature, and cervical position. I discuss why having regular menstrual cycles and regular ovulation is not just important for fertility but also for overall health, and I also talk about why many health professionals consider the menstrual cycle to be the 5th vital sign that serves as an indicator of a woman's overall health status. Topics discussed in today's episode What is the Fertility Awareness Method? How is the Fertility Awareness Method different to the Rhythm Method and why is it effective? Why is menstruation important for a woman's overall health and not just her fertility? How can a woman use her menstrual cycle as a diagnostic tool? What role does regular ovulation play in heart health, bone health, and breast health? Does the pill "regulate" a woman's cycles? Does it "mimic pregnancy"? What are the 3 fertile signs and how do they indicate fertility? What does cervical mucus have to do with fertility? How come you can't use basal body temperature measurements to predict when you'll ovulate? Connect with Lisa You can connect with Lisa on the Fertility Friday website, and on Facebook and Twitter! Stamford Chidge, Sophie Rose, Chelsea journalist Dan Levene and Chelsea season ticket holder Dan Silver discuss Chelsea's win against Newcastle. Chelsea got back to winning ways and the title challenge got back on track with a 2-0 win against Newcastle on Saturday, but they made hard work of it. Were Cahill and Courtois rested or dropped for Cech and Zouma? A fitful and poor first half made way for a better second half where the team cajoled by Jose Mourinho finally found their rhythm. But are Chelsea getting away with it at the moment? How do they keep their rhythm in the weeks ahead? One hopes that Oscar and Costa have both found their form and rhythm too. All will be revealed on the Chelsea FanCast tonight! The team discuss the Chelsea v Newcastle game including the player ratings, and the nominations for this week's Match Awards - the Fannies - for Man of the Match; Chant of the Match; Guinness & Celery Moments before looking at this week's Chelsea news including the FA charging Jose Mourinho...
