David Holmes discusses the distinctions between palliative and hospice care from the UK and US perspectives. We revive our Global Selection series with a standout contribution from one of France's most authoritative selectors of his generation, Ivan Smagghe. Ahead of his return to Dublin for Big Dish Go this weekend at Centre Point, Smagghe delivers a masterful hour of storytelling through sound. From shimmering downtempo rarities to deep, driving house cuts and smoky, electro-kissed grooves, his mix unfolds like the hazy soundtrack to a foggy morning in the hills of an undisclosed rave, transporting you there, or wherever your wandering mind takes you. Few DJs can transform obscurity into dancefloor gold like Ivan Smagghe. With a musical ethos reminiscent of the late, great Andrew Weatherall, Smagghe acts as a raw conduit, channelling his notoriously esoteric record collection into the pulsing bodies beneath the strobe. His latest mix is yet another example of his singular talent—a deep dive into the avant-garde fringes of electronic music, held together by an intuitive understanding of groove and space. Smagghe has long been at the intersection of Parisian hype and unwavering musical integrity. From his pioneering work with Black Strobe to his boundary-pushing productions as one half of It's A Fine Line, he has received praise from some of the most respected names in electronic music, including James Murphy, Trevor Jackson, Ata, Optimo, and, of course, Weatherall himself. What is their shared mission? To demonstrate that electronic music is more than just a hedonistic soundtrack; it is a constantly evolving art form. “I have very fond, if a bit blurred, memories of the Big Dish Go parties in the basement of Kennedy's… Loud and wild they were but we live in the now and we must let that spirit live on. It's just about freedom, in that mix (who cares what style it is) and in that ephemeral companionship with David Holmes. On January 28th, 2009, a rehearsed stunt on set of Harry Potter went horrifically wrong. David, who for a decade was the lead stunt double for his friend Daniel Radcliffe, was left paralysed from the chest down.A number of long and dangerous operations followed, many of them lifesaving. David survived but his condition is degenerative - each year bringing yet more challenge for him. From being an elite gymnast and professional stunt double for the most famous boy in the world at the time… as someone who was defined by their physicality … David's accident stripped of his identity. His story – told brilliantly in the moving documentary David Holmes: The Boy Who Lived and now in his autobiography - is more than one of survival. It is the story of someone who decided to reject bitterness about his old life to pursue a new one full of meaning and purpose. As David puts it: “I'm having a unique journey on this planet, and I am going to own it.”David is now a podcaster, producer, author … and an inspiration to all that meet him. He is speaking at Creative Folkestone Festival on 21st November. [School of Movies 2024] Cloon June continues with the slickest and arguably best Las Vegas heist movie. This 2001 remake of the underachieving 1960 Rat Pack original is less about establishing characters with any kind of arc and more about setting up the perfect mousetrap with eleven skilled individuals we can have fun with. It's a big old magic trick, with the prestige reveal to us, the audience being the punch that makes it satisfying. We weren't going to cover the sequels on the main feed, but we got curious and delved back into 12 and 13 for the first time since the cinema in 2004 and 2007, finding most of the best drama in there. And finally, a re-edit of our 2018 After School Club on Ocean's 8, featuring Toby Jungius. Finally, we round off with a dream-team cast pitch for a rebooted Ocean's 9. Next week, we make an unscheduled stop at Tomorrowland, to see what Brad Bird thinks of the future we wound up in. After that, extending Cloon June into July, Soderburgh and Clooney, along with Jennifer Lopez and composer David Holmes hit their absolute cinematic peaks with Out of Sight.

Pod topics include: the serendipitous rendezvous that first brought them together, exploring their idiosyncratic creativity & modus operandi, tech/gear evolution, sampling obsession, the lost mystique of crate-digging, the early days of globe-trotting, crafting genre-defining records & remixes, reinventing themselves onstage, a sensational comeback three decades deep, plus K&D's virgin sojourn to Burning Man- the Black Rock Mudpacolypse 2023.   Kruder & Dorfmeister Bio During the 1990s, Vienna, Austria-based producer/DJs Kruder & Dorfmeister helped invent the electronic music genre known as downtempo/trip-hop. Their presence has loomed large over the scene ever since, despite a relatively small discography as a duo.  With 1993 EP G-Stoned- the first release on their similarly titled record label - the pair established a laconic, smoked-out, organic sound & aesthetic rich in live instrumentation. K&D are well-known to incorporate acid jazz, dub, house, atmospheric drum & bass, hip-hop, bossa nova, funk, soul and beyond into their trademark, succulent sonic gumbo.  The duo built up a lengthy résumé of remixes for a diverse smattering of artists, including Roni Size, David Holmes, Depeche Mode, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony. Several of these were aggregated on the landmark double-album The K&D Sessions (1998), which was lavished with much critical acclaim upon release and its reputation continues to age like a fine wine. Over the years, the two producers remained active with solo work and adjacent projects (most notably Tosca, Dorfmeister's duo with Rupert Huber, and Peter with Peace Orchestra). 1995, a fantastic full-length studio album of original material that had been mysteriously shelved for a quarter century, was unearthed and released in 2020. Kruder & Dorfmeister are currently celebrating their 30th anniversary with an expansive world tour that unveils an authentic, emotional, kaleidoscopic audio/visual concert experience. Eternal thanks to Peter & Richard for the time, music, & energy. -bg B.Getz's feature: K&D return to US, 1st Burning Man, SF show- Sept.23 K&D 30th anniversary show - Belgium, Nov.23 K&D at Burning Man - DISTRIKT sunrise, Sept.23   Vibe Junkie JAMZ "Speechless" - Count Basic [K&D drum & bass remix] "Useless" - Depeche Mode [K&D remix] "Everybody Loves the Sunshine" [Roy Ayers remixed by NETSKY]   Please visit our awesome sponsor iamavl for the latest free Asheville livestreams! Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by stuntperson and all round beam of light DAVD HOLMES!You might have come to know David through the documentary 'The Boy Who Lived', which goes into great detail about his life and the path that led to his stunt work and career in the industry. If you have indeed seen it, you'll know that he's someone who has been through some immense experiences, and lived through one literally life changing one. But David hasn't disappeared from the light or retreated, when it might seem like an entirely understandable reaction. He's gained power and confidence through the strong friendships and relationships he made in his film career, and this has fueled his evolution in no small part, into where he currently finds himself. This is an awesome conversation with someone whose outlook will inspire and delight, and as David himself says, he is "handi-capable, not handicapped". Of course, there are moments of trauma that he wll live with, and these reveal themselves in the conversation, so perhaps take note going in... But don't miss out on this one - it's a classic Distraction Pieces if ever there was one.PIP'S PATREON PAGE if you're of a supporting natureTHE BOY WHO LIVEDINSTAGRAMCAMEOHOSPITAL GOFUNDMECUNNING STUNTS podcastSPEECH DEVELOPMENT WEBSTOREPIP TWITCH • (music stuff)PIP INSTAGRAMPIP TWITTERPIP PATREONPIP IMDBPOD BIBLE Hosted on Acast.
