In our latest episode, Misty, a multi-talented artist, shares her evolving relationship with music, childhood memories, and the creative influences that have shaped her remarkable artistry. We dive into her New Mexican roots, where the enchanting cultures of Las Cruces sparked her passion for music from a young age. Armed with vivid anecdotes, Misty vividly recounts her obsession with Mariah Carey's "Someday," revealing how it fueled her dreams of becoming a singer. As she recalls the poignant transitions of her youth, we learn how iconic soundtracks—like that of "Romeo and Juliet" and the album "OK Computer" by Radiohead—served as soundscapes for her emotional awakening and creative exploration.Throughout this conversation, Misty candidly discusses her struggles with confidence onstage and her transformative journey toward embracing her voice. As our last episode of the year, I thought it would be fun to do a year in review of the music of 2020 with my friend James McCrae. Neither of us are music experts, but we do have similar taste in music and got a lot of comfort out of music this year. It’s been such a strange year and so hard for artists to not be able to tour, and as consumers we miss live shows so much. In this episode we each came with 3 albums we loved this year and talked about songs we listened to on repeat. We also talked about how art is always best when you "go with yourself," as Fiona Apple said in her 1997 speech. And in the vein of being yourself, we end the show with a conversation with Dr. Sophia Kogan about body image, vanity, how our hair defines us, and standards of beauty.Show notes:- LET IT OUT Holiday Workshops!- Connect with James on The Web | Instagram- James' Book- Fiona Apple- Charli XCX- Pitchfork's Albums of The Year Podcast- Waxahatchee- Lilacs by Waxahatchee (Music video feat. Misty Boyce is a singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist. She is part of the band Lord Huron and has an incredible solo career to boot! Her latest album is called "Get Lost" and touches on the hard stuff in life including tragedy and loss, depression, and what can be the emptiness of fame. In addition to her solo career, Misty has performed and toured with many notable artists including Sara Bareilles. I got a chance to catch up with Misty in her home studio in LA and I loved this conversation so much. Misty is a new friend, but someone I connected with instantly. We talk about getting through the lowest of lows. Moving from devastation to freedom. On tackling body image issues as women. On pushing through fear, and as she so perfectly says, “When you tackle the heavy, dark things, they become light...do not run away from them.” She also talks about her incredible path in music (which started when she was nine!), shares some special musical moments (like being in the vocal booth with Sting!), how meditation has been life-changing, and so much more. Plus, she shares her “favorite” list, including her go-to song to sing in the shower! Where to find Misty: Instagram Twitter Website This episode was audio produced by Aaron Moring. In this episode we talk about how we're both from Michigan, wellness in the 80’s, being vegetarian, being an entrepreneur, why green apples are great for your skin and how much we both love eating them with cinnamon on them, using food for beauty, finding your passions and turning that into a profession, motherhood, body-image, the sexism she's experienced in her career, what working with  Gwyneth Paltrow is like and so much more. This is a very robust episode, hope you like it all! I met Misty on a beach in Hawaii. She was [is] so beautiful, engaging, and talented that she would have been wildly intimidating yet she was also warm, kind, and sweet so I felt immediately comfortable around her. She's someone who, when she talks to you is completely present making you feel like you're the most important person in the room rather than looking around for the next best person to talk to. Getting to know Misty more I realized we had a lot in common when it came to our tumultuous relationships with food and our body image. I never would have guessed that seemingly confident Misty would have struggled in the same way I did with this but she did and does... We had a really long, meandering, raw, vulnerable conversation about everything from her own eating disorder and body image struggles, to where she's at now healing it all so I thought it would be a perfect conversation to air for National Eating Disorders Awareness Week. While some of this conversation is heavy on the body image and eating front, that's not all we spoke about. Misty is a super successful and talented musician so we talk about her career, writing process, and advice for aspiring musicians, as well as her current and future projects she has in the works. I think you'll find this entire conversation to be a delight, I did. — Show Sponsors —Charlotte's WebI'm super excited to share with you one of my new favorite products.
