Jonah 1:11-12 NASB 11 So they said to him, “What should we do to you that the sea may become calm for us?”—for the sea was becoming increasingly stormy. 12 He said to them, “Pick me up and throw me into the sea. Then the sea will become calm for you, for I know that on account of me this great storm has come upon you.”Jonah 1:15-16 NASB 15 So they picked up Jonah, threw him into the sea, and the sea stopped its raging. 16 Then the men feared the Lord greatly, and they offered a sacrifice to the Lord and made vows.Jonah 1:17 NASB 17 And the Lord appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.1. What if the SWALLOWING was TO SAVE?2. What if the RESTRICTION was to RESTORE?Jonah 2:1-9 NASB 1 Then Jonah prayed to the Lord his God from the stomach of the fish, 2 and he said, “I called out of my distress to the Lord, And He answered me. I cried for help from the depth of Sheol; You heard my voice. 3 “For You had cast me into the deep, Into the heart of the seas, And the current engulfed me. All Your breakers and billows passed over me. 4 “So I said, ‘I have been expelled from Your sight. Nevertheless I will look again toward Your holy temple.' 5 “Water encompassed me to the point of death. The great deep engulfed me, Weeds were wrapped around my head. 6 “I descended to the roots of the mountains. The earth with its bars was around me forever, But You have brought up my life from the pit, O Lord my God. 7 “While I was fainting away, I remembered the Lord, And my prayer came to You, Into Your holy temple. 8 “Those who regard vain idols forsake their faithfulness, 9 But I will sacrifice to You with the voice of thanksgiving. That which I have vowed I will pay. Salvation is from the Lord.”3. What if the PURGING was to PROVIDE?Jonah 2:10 NASB Then the Lord commanded the fish, and it vomited Jonah up onto the dry land.1 Peter 4:12-13; 19 NIV 12 Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice insofar as you share Christ's sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. 19 Therefore let those who suffer according to God's will entrust their souls to a faithful Creator while doing good.Jonah 3:1-3 NASB Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, 2 “Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.”3 So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord.Questions:1. What if the situation that feels “SWALLOWING” to you is actually to save you from something? How might you process it differently?2. What God wants to use the “PURGING” (or mess that you find yourself in) to PROVIDE for you in some way? What might that look like and how can you best navigate that provision?
Matthew week 7 Matthew 3:1-12 ESV In those days John the Baptist came preaching in the wilderness of Judea, 2 “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.” 3 For this is he who was spoken of by the prophet Isaiah when he said, “The voice of one crying in the wilderness: ‘Prepare the way of the Lord; make his paths straight.'” 4 Now John wore a garment of camel's hair and a leather belt around his waist, and his food was locusts and wild honey. 5 Then Jerusalem and all Judea and all the region about the Jordan were going out to him, 6 and they were baptized by him in the river Jordan, confessing their sins. 7 But when he saw many of the Pharisees and Sadducees coming to his baptism, he said to them, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the wrath to come? 8 Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. 9 And do not presume to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father,' for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children for Abraham. 10 Even now the axe is laid to the root of the trees. Every tree therefore that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. 11 “I baptize you with water for repentance, but he who is coming after me is mightier than I, whose sandals I am not worthy to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire. 12 His winnowing fork is in his hand, and he will clear his threshing floor and gather his wheat into the barn, but the chaff he will burn with unquenchable fire.” Malachi 3:1 NASB “Behold, I am sending My messenger, and he will clear a way before Me. And the Lord, whom you are seeking, will suddenly come to His temple; and the messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight, behold, He is coming,” says the Lord of armies. Malachi 4:5 NASB 5 “Behold, I am going to send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord. Luke 1:17 NASB 17 And it is he who will go as a forerunner before Him in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of fathers back to their children, and the disobedient to the attitude of the righteous, to make ready a people prepared for the Lord.” Matthew 17:12-13 ESV 12 But I tell you that Elijah has already come, and they did not recognize him, but did to him whatever they pleased. So also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands.” 13 Then the disciples understood that he was speaking to them of John the Baptist. John 1:19-21 ESV 19 And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, “Who are you?” 20 He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, “I am not the Christ.” 21 And they asked him, “What then? Are you Elijah?” He said, “I am not.” Matthew 11:14 ESV 14 and if you are willing to accept it, he is Elijah who is to come. 2 Kings 1:7-8 ESV 7 He said to them, “What kind of man was he who came to meet you and told you these things?” 8 They answered him, “He wore a garment of hair, with a belt of leather about his waist.” And he said, “It is Elijah the Tishbite.” 1 Kings 18:18 NASB 18 He said, “I have not brought disaster to Israel, but you and your father's house have, because you have abandoned the commandments of the Lord and you have followed the Baals. Luke 3:1-2 NASB Now in the fifteenth year of the reign of Tiberius Caesar, when Pontius Pilate was governor of Judea, and Herod was tetrarch of Galilee and his brother Philip was tetrarch of the region of Ituraea and Trachonitis, and Lysanias was tetrarch of Abilene, 2 in the high priesthood of Annas and Caiaphas, the word of God came to John, the son of Zechariah, in the wilderness. Matthew 14:4 ESV 4 because John had been saying to him, “It is not lawful for you to have her.” 1 Kings 18:1, 21 NASB Now it happened after many days that the word of the Lord came to Elijah in the third year, saying, “Go, present yourself to Ahab, and I will provide rain on the face of the earth.” 21 Then Elijah approached all the people and said, “How long are you going to struggle with the two choices? If the Lord is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him.” Matthew 11:7-11 ESV 7 As they went away, Jesus began to speak to the crowds concerning John: “What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind? 8 What then did you go out to see? A man dressed in soft clothing? Behold, those who wear soft clothing are in kings' houses.9 What then did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I tell you, and more than a prophet. 10 This is he of whom it is written, “‘Behold, I send my messenger before your face, who will prepare your way before you.' 11 Truly, I say to you, among those born of women there has arisen no one greater than John the Baptist. Yet the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he. John 3:3 NASB 3 Jesus responded and said to him, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless someone is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God.”
Ezra 9:1-4 (NASB)Now when these things had been completed, the officials approached me, saying, “The people of Israel and the priests and the Levites have not separated themselves from the peoples of the lands, as to their abominations, those of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, the Ammonites, the Moabites, the Egyptians, and the Amorites. 2 For they have taken some of their daughters as wives for themselves and for their sons, so that the holy race has intermingled with the peoples of the lands; indeed, the hands of the officials and the leaders have taken the lead in this unfaithfulness.” 3 When I heard about this matter, I tore my garment and my robe, and pulled out some of the hair from my head and my beard, and sat down appalled. 4 Then everyone who was frightened by the words of the God of Israel on account of the unfaithfulness of the exiles gathered to me, and I sat appalled until the evening offering. Sermon Manuscript: Acts 9:10-20 Series: Acts Title: Why . . . If I can't stand them? Date: 3/13/22 Location: Perris Valley Church Acts 9:10-12 (NASB) Now there was a disciple in Damascus named Ananias; and the Lord said to him in a vision, “Ananias.” And he said, “Here I am, Lord.” 11 And the Lord said to him, “Get up and go to the street called Straight, and inquire at the house of Judas for a man from Tarsus named Saul, for he is praying, 12 and he has seen in a vision a man named Ananias come in and lay his hands on him, so that he might regain his sight.” Acts 9:10-12 (NASB) But Ananias answered, “Lord, I have heard from many people about this man, how much harm he did to Your saints in Jerusalem; 14 and here he has authority from the chief priests to arrest all who call on Your name.” It's okay to ask God for clarity. It's not okay to disobey. Acts 9:15 (NASB) But the Lord said to him, “Go, for he is a chosen instrument of Mine, to bear My name before the Gentiles and kings and the sons of Israel; God always has a reason for His directions, even if we don't understand . . . or agree. 1 Timothy 2:7 (NASB) For this I was appointed as a preacher and an apostle (I am telling the truth, I am not lying), as a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. Acts 9:16 (NASB) for I will show him how much he must suffer in behalf of My name.” Matthew 10:38-39 (NASB) And the one who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me. 39 The one who has found his life will lose it, and the one who has lost his life on My account will find it. 2 Corinthians 11:23-28 (NASB) Are they servants of Christ?—I am speaking as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, beaten times without number, often in danger of death. 24 Five times I received from the Jews thirty-nine lashes. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, a night and a day I have spent adrift at sea. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among false brothers; 27 I have been in labor and hardship, through many sleepless nights, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 28 Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches. Acts 9:17 (NASB) So Ananias departed and entered the house, and after laying his hands on him said, “Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus, who appeared to you on the road by which you were coming, has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit.” God's instructions are to find, help, console, and spiritually feed our brothers and sisters . . . even if we don't like the people God is asking us to find. Acts:18-20 (NASB) 18 And immediately something like fish scales fell from his eyes, and he regained his sight, and he got up and was baptized; 19 and he took food and was strengthened. Now for several days he was with the disciples who were in Damascus, 20 and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.” God Transforms lives on purpose and for a purpose.
Sermon Manuscript: Acts 9:20-25 Series: Acts Title: What This World Wants Date: 3/20/22 Location: Perris Valley Church Luke 2:41-52 (NASB) His parents went to Jerusalem every year at the Feast of the Passover. 42 And when He was twelve years old, they went up there according to the custom of the feast; 43 and as they were returning, after spending the full number of days required, the boy Jesus stayed behind in Jerusalem, but His parents were unaware of it. 44 Instead, they thought that He was somewhere in the caravan, and they went a day's journey; and then they began looking for Him among their relatives and acquaintances. 45 And when they did not find Him, they returned to Jerusalem, looking for Him. 46 Then, after three days they found Him in the temple, sitting in the midst of the teachers, both listening to them and asking them questions. 47 And all who heard Him were amazed at His understanding and His answers. 48 When Joseph and Mary saw Him, they were bewildered; and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You treated us this way? Behold, Your father and I have been anxiously looking for You!” 49 And He said to them, “Why is it that you were looking for Me? Did you not know that I had to be in My Father's house?” 50 And yet they on their part did not understand the statement which He had made to them. Acts 9:20 (NASB) and immediately he began to proclaim Jesus in the synagogues, saying, “He is the Son of God.” Psalm 2:6-7 (NASB) “But as for Me, I have installed My King Upon Zion, My holy mountain.” 7 “I will announce the decree of the Lord: He said to Me, ‘You are My Son, Today I have fathered You. 1 Chronicles 17:11-14 (NASB) When your days are fulfilled that you must go to be with your fathers, then I will set up one of your descendants after you, who will be from your sons; and I will establish his kingdom. 12 He shall build for Me a house, and I will establish his throne forever. 13 I will be his father and he shall be My son; and I will not take My favor away from him, as I took it from him who was before you. 14 But I will settle him in My house and in My kingdom forever, and his throne will be established forever.”'” Mark 1:1 (NASB) 1 The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God, John 1:34 (NASB) 34 And I myself have seen, and have testified that this is the Son of God.” John 1:49 (NASB) Nathanael answered Him, “Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel!” Matthew 27:54 (NASB) Now as for the centurion and those who were with him keeping guard over Jesus, when they saw the earthquake and the other things that were happening, they became extremely frightened and said, “Truly this was the Son of God!” Matthew 8:29 (NASB) And they cried out, saying, “What business do You have with us, Son of God? Have You come here to torment us before the time?” Mark 3:11 (NASB) And whenever the unclean spirits saw Him, they would fall down before Him and shout, “You are the Son of God!” Acts 9:21 (NASB) 21 All those hearing him continued to be amazed, and were saying, “Is this not the one who in Jerusalem destroyed those who called on this name, and had come here for the purpose of bringing them bound before the chief priests?” 1) Who you were is always going to be a part of your life, but your past does not direct your future — only Jesus does. Acts 9:22 (NASB) 22 But Saul kept increasing in strength and confounding Jews who lived in Damascus by proving that this Jesus is the Christ. 2) Defending Jesus will grow our Spiritual Strength Acts 9:23 (NASB) When many days had elapsed, the Jews plotted together to do away with him, Acts 9:24 (NASB) but their plot became known to Saul. They were also closely watching the gates day and night so that they might put him to death; 3) Neither Our Culture, Our Government, Our Celebrities, Or Our Friends, Want To Hear You Talk About Jesus. But We Must Not Stop Proclaiming Jesus As The Son Of God. Acts 9:25 (NASB) but his disciples took him at night and let him down through an opening in the wall, lowering him in a large basket. 4) You are not alone. Your church has got your back.
Acts 9:1 ESV But Saul, still breathing threats and murder against the disciples of the Lord, went to the high priest Deuteronomy 21:22-23 NASB “Now if a person has committed a sin carrying a sentence of death and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 his body is not to be left overnight on the tree, but you shall certainly bury him on the same day (for he who is hanged is cursed of God), so that you do not defile your land which the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance. Acts 9:2 ESV 2 and asked him for letters to the synagogues at Damascus, so that if he found any belonging to the Way, men or women, he might bring them bound to Jerusalem. John 14:6 NIV 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. Isaiah 35:1-2 NIV The desert and the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will rejoice and blossom. Like the crocus, 2 it will burst into bloom; it will rejoice greatly and shout for joy. The glory of Lebanon will be given to it, the splendor of Carmel and Sharon; they will see the glory of the LORD, the splendor of our God. Isaiah 35:3-8 NIV 3 Strengthen the feeble hands, steady the knees that give way; 4 say to those with fearful hearts, “Be strong, do not fear; your God will come, he will come with vengeance; with divine retribution he will come to save you.” 5 Then will the eyes of the blind be opened and the ears of the deaf unstopped. 6 Then will the lame leap like a deer, and the mute tongue shout for joy. Water will gush forth in the wilderness and streams in the desert. 7 The burning sand will become a pool, the thirsty ground bubbling springs. In the haunts where jackals once lay, grass and reeds and papyrus will grow. 8 And a highway will be there; it will be called the Way of Holiness; it will be for those who walk on that Way. Isaiah 40:3 NIV 3 A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare the way for the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God. John 4:24 NASB "God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth." Acts 9:3-9 ESV 3 Now as he went on his way, he approached Damascus, and suddenly a light from heaven shone around him. 4 And falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?” 5 And he said, “Who are you, Lord?” And he said, “I am Jesus, whom you are persecuting. 6 But rise and enter the city, and you will be told what you are to do.” 7 The men who were traveling with him stood speechless, hearing the voice but seeing no one. 8 Saul rose from the ground, and although his eyes were opened, he saw nothing. So they led him by the hand and brought him into Damascus. 9 And for three days he was without sight, and neither ate nor drank. Psalm 104:2 NIV The Lord wraps himself in light as with a garment 1 Tim. 6:16b “dwells in unapproachable light” 1 John 1:5-7 NIV 5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin. Deuteronomy 28:15, 28-29 NIV 15 However, if you do not obey the Lord your God and do not carefully follow all his commands and decrees I am giving you today, all these curses will come on you and overtake you: 28 The Lord will afflict you with madness, blindness and confusion of mind. 29 At midday you will grope about like a blind person in the dark. You will be unsuccessful in everything you do; day after day you will be oppressed and robbed, with no one to rescue you.

The link is located right below this audio player. For this Wednesday Bible Study, we will consider the words of this week's Old Testament Lesson: 2 Samuel 18:5-9, 15, 31-33. Hopefully, these studies encourage you to engage in a deeper study of the current passage. But, more importantly, I hope these studies deepen your love for the Word of God. Let's begin: Last week's Old Testament Lesson related Nathan's encounter with King David over his sin with Bathsheba and the murder of her husband, Uriah. Though David confesses his sin, the consequences of what he has done will follow him and his family for generations. This record is found in: 2 Samuel 12:9-14 NAS95 'Why have you despised the word of the LORD by doing evil in His sight? You have struck down Uriah the Hittite with the sword, have taken his wife to be your wife, and have killed him with the sword of the sons of Ammon. [10] 'Now therefore, the sword shall never depart from your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' [11] "Thus says the LORD, 'Behold, I will raise up evil against you from your own household; I will even take your wives before your eyes and give them to your companion, and he will lie with your wives in broad daylight. [12] 'Indeed you did it secretly, but I will do this thing before all Israel, and under the sun.'" [13] Then David said to Nathan, "I have sinned against the LORD." And Nathan said to David, "The LORD also has taken away your sin; you shall not die. [14] "However, because by this deed you have given occasion to the enemies of the LORD to blaspheme, the child also that is born to you shall surely die." When we confess our sin with a penitent heart, God does indeed forgive us. Sometimes, the lasting consequences are not publicly evident, but nevertheless, they exist. In David's case, the consequences of his sin will be on display for all of Israel to see. David was reminded to his dying day of the cost of sin. As I noted in last week's sermon podcast, David learned some very important lessons. Sin will take you farther than you ever thought you'd go; it will keep you there longer than you ever intended to stay, and it will cost you more than you ever expected to pay. This week's Old Testament Lesson relates to one of those consequences. Listen as I read: 2 Samuel 18:5-9 NAS95 The king charged Joab and Abishai and Ittai, saying, "Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom." And all the people heard when the king charged all the commanders concerning Absalom. [6] Then the people went out into the field against Israel, and the battle took place in the forest of Ephraim. [7] The people of Israel were defeated there before the servants of David, and the slaughter there that day was great, 20,000 men. [8] For the battle there was spread over the whole countryside, and the forest devoured more people that day than the sword devoured. [9] Now Absalom happened to meet the servants of David. For Absalom was riding on his mule, and the mule went under the thick branches of a great oak. And his head caught fast in the oak, so he was left hanging between heaven and earth, while the mule that was under him kept going. 2 Samuel 18:19 NAS95 Then Ahimaaz the son of Zadok said, "Please let me run and bring the king news that the LORD has freed him from the hand of his enemies." 2 Samuel 18:31-33 NAS95 Behold, the Cushite arrived, and the Cushite said, "Let my lord the king receive good news, for the LORD has freed you this day from the hand of all those who rose up against you." [32] Then the king said to the Cushite, "Is it well with the young man Absalom?" And the Cushite answered, "Let the enemies of my lord the king, and all who rise up against you for evil, be as that young man!" [33] The king was deeply moved and went up to the chamber over the gate and wept. And thus he said as he walked, "O my son Absalom, my son, my son Absalom! Would I had died instead of you, O Absalom, my son, my son!" Certain verses suggest that King David was a permissive parent. After his daughter Tamar was raped by her brother Amnon, Scripture records: 2 Samuel 13:21 NASB Now when King David heard about all these matters, he became very angry. When his son Adonijah seeks to take the throne instead of Solomon, the Bible records the following: 1 Kings 1:6 NASB And his father had never rebuked him at any time by asking, "Why have you done so?" And he was also a very handsome man, and he was born after Absalom. Both of these cases tell us that though he was a man after God's own heart, David failed to discipline his children, to raise them to have good sense and follow the Lord. Absalom, who is mentioned in this week's lesson, also orchestrated the death of Amnon for raping his sister. 2 Samuel 13:28-29 NASB Then Absalom commanded his servants, saying, "See now, when Amnon's heart is cheerful with wine, and I say to you, 'Strike Amnon,' then put him to death. Do not fear; have I not commanded you myself? Be courageous and be valiant." [29] And the servants of Absalom did to Amnon just as Absalom had commanded. Then all the king's sons got up and each mounted his mule and fled. This lesson records the death of Absalom after he attempts to overthrow his father as king. In these verses, David makes an unwise decision by telling his commanders to Deal gently for my sake with the young man Absalom. This must discourage them after all the death, destruction, and upheaval that Absalom's rebellion has caused the nation. As you might remember from Sunday School, while trying to escape, Absalom runs into a tree and wedges his head and neck in the crook of a branch. The king's military commander, Joab, knowing the danger of allowing Absalom to live takes matters into his own hands. 2 Samuel 18:14 NASB Then Joab said, "I will not waste time here with you." So he took three spears in his hand and thrust them through the heart of Absalom while he was still alive in the midst of the oak. Once David is informed of his son's death, he weeps. Regardless of what Absalom had done, he was still his son. However, David's weeping over Absalom is considered shameful and affects the loyalty of his soldiers. If not for the intervention of Joab, his military commander, David would have lost his kingdom. 2 Samuel 19:5-7 NASB Then Joab came into the house to the king and said, "Today you have shamed all your servants, who have saved your life today and the lives of your sons and daughters, the lives of your wives, and the lives of your concubines, [6] by loving those who hate you, and by hating those who love you. For you have revealed today that commanders and servants are nothing to you; for I know today that if Absalom were alive and all of us were dead today, then it would be right as far as you are concerned. [7] "Now therefore arise, go out and speak kindly to your servants, for I swear by the LORD, if you do not go out, no man will stay the night with you, and this will be worse for you than all the misfortune that has happened to you from your youth until now!" I wonder that if at any point David thought back to God's declaration in: 2 Samuel 12:10 NASB 'Now then, the sword shall never leave your house, because you have despised Me and have taken the wife of Uriah the Hittite to be your wife.' I encourage you to go back and read 2 Samuel 11-12 to remind yourself of how seriously God regards sin. Let's Pray, Gracious Heavenly Father, We are grateful that You forgive our sin when we come before You with a penitent heart. Help us to think of the consequences as various temptations come our way. Strengthen our walk with You this day. In the Name of Jesus, Amen!
Now Adam slept with his wife, Eve, and she became pregnant. When the time came, she gave birth to Cain, and she said, "With the LORD's help, I have brought forth a man!" (2) Later she gave birth to a second son and named him Abel. When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain was a farmer. (3) At harvest time Cain brought to the LORD a gift of his farm produce, (4) while Abel brought several choice lambs from the best of his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his offering, (5) but he did not accept Cain and his offering. This made Cain very angry and dejected. (6) "Why are you so angry?" the LORD asked him. "Why do you look so dejected? (7) You will be accepted if you respond in the right way. But if you refuse to respond correctly, then watch out! Sin is waiting to attack and destroy you, and you must subdue it." (8) Later Cain suggested to his brother, Abel, "Let's go out into the fields." And while they were there, Cain attacked and killed his brother. Genesis 22 a picture of: A lamb as provision. A lamb as a sacrifice The relationship of God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ One of the most important pictures of faith in the Bible – (17) It was by faith that Abraham offered Isaac as a sacrifice when God was testing him. Abraham, who had received God's promises, was ready to sacrifice his only son, Isaac, (18) though God had promised him, "Isaac is the son through whom your descendants will be counted." (19) Abraham assumed that if Isaac died, God was able to bring him back to life again. And in a sense, Abraham did receive his son back from the dead. - Hebrews 11:17-19 NLT Gen 22:1-2 NASB Now it came about after these things, that God tested Abraham, and said to him, "Abraham!" And he said, "Here I am." He said, "Take now your son, your only son, whom you love, Isaac, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I will tell you.“ Trust in God’s sovereign control: Example – life of Joseph Romans 8:28 – some things, most things, all things Check value of your faith – by having it tested Easy when things are good – What about when things are not so great? Abraham – heartbroken Abram (exalted father) Abraham (father of multitude) Real test of who Abraham loved most "A religion which costs nothing is worth nothing" —J.C. Ryle Abraham’s response: Emotions not mentioned – not the focus Decision based on God’s character – knowing God Is God fickle? Is God faithful? Can He be trusted or not? “We” will return Concluding = Logically calculate Logically based on the promises of God What do you do when a situation seems illogical? Reason in light of God’s character

Matthew 2:1-3 (NASB) Now after Jesus was born in Bethlehem of Judea in the days of Herod the king, magi from the east arrived in Jerusalem, saying, 2 "Where is He who has been born King of the Jews? We saw His star in the east and have come to worship Him." 3 When Herod the king heard this, he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 1. Worship Is The Why Behind The Journey Matthew 2:4-11 (NASB) Gathering together all the chief priests and scribes of the people, King Herod inquired of them where the Messiah was to be born. 5 They said to him, "In Bethlehem of Judea; for this is what has been written by the prophet: 6 'And you, Bethlehem, land of Judah, are by no means least among the leaders of Judah; for out of you shall come forth A Ruler Who will shepherd MY people Israel.'" 7 Then Herod secretly called [called for a private meeting] the magi and determined from them the exact time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Bethlehem and said, "Go and search carefully for the Child; and when you have found Him, report to me, so that I too may come and worship Him." 9 After hearing the king, they went their way; and the star, which they had seen in the east, went on before them until it came and stood over the place where the Child was [not Bethlehem]. 10 When they saw the star, they rejoiced exceedingly with great joy. 11 After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures [their hearts], they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. 2. Worship Keeps Your Heart Open Matthew 2:12-15 (NASB) Having been warned by God in a dream not to return to Herod, the magi left for their own country by another way. 13 Now when they had gone, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream and said, "Get up! Take the Child and His mother and flee to Egypt, and remain there until I tell you; for Herod is going to search for the Child to destroy Him." 14 So Joseph got up and took the Child and His mother while it was still night, and left for Egypt. 15 He remained there until the death of Herod. This was to fulfill what had been spoken by the Lord through the prophet:" Out of Egypt I called MY Son." 3. God Will Guide & Provide For The Journey Psalm 32:8-9 (NLT) The Lord says, "I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise [counsel] you and watch over you. 9 Do not be like a senseless horse or mule that needs a bit and bridle to keep it under control." 4. God Will Protect You On The Journey. Matthew 2:16-18 (NASB) When Herod saw that he had been tricked by the magi, he became very enraged, and sent and slew all the male children who were in Bethlehem and all its vicinity, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had determined from the magi. 17 Then what had been spoken through Jeremiah the prophet was fulfilled: 18 "A voice was heard in Ramah, weeping and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children; and she refused to be comforted, because they were no more." 5. In this Sunday’s message Pastor Joe Schimmel talks about the birth of Jesus, born in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. Luke 2:1-7 (NASB) Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. This was the first […]
Matthew 1:18 (NASB) Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. Matthew 1:19-25 (NASB) Joseph her husband, being a righteous man [Mic 6:8 Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly with God] and not wanting to disgrace her [expose, put to an open shame], planned to send her away [divorce her] secretly. 20 But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take [receive] Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. 21 She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins." Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: 23 "Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which translated means, " God with us." 24 And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took Mary as his wife, 25 but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. God wants you to have a personal encounter with Him. Luke 2:1-20 (NASB) [The Journey To Bethlehem] Now in those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus, that a census be taken of all the inhabited earth. 2 This was the first census taken while Quirinius was governor of Syria. 3 And everyone was on his way to register for the census, each to his own city. 4 Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David which is called Bethlehem, because he was of the house and family of David, 5 in order to register along with Mary, who was engaged to him, and was with child. 6 While they were there, the days were completed for her to give birth. 7 And she gave birth to her firstborn son; and she wrapped Him in cloths, and laid Him in a manger, because there was no room for them in the inn. God Will Always Make Room For You To Experience More Of Him. Luke 2:8-15 (NASB) [A Crazy Night In The Country] Each Experience With God Increases A Hunger For More Of God. Luke 2:16-20 (NASB) [I'm not crazy after all] So the shepherds came in a hurry and found their way to Mary and Joseph, and the baby as He lay in the manger. 17 When they had seen this, they made known the statement which had been told them about this Child. 18 And all who heard it wondered at the things which were told them by the shepherds. 19 But Mary treasured all these things, pondering them in her heart. 20 The shepherds went back, glorifying and praising God for all that they had heard and seen, just as had been told them. The Conclusion of the Matter Ecclesiastes 11:9 – 12:14 Rejoice now while you can (11:9-10) 1Ti 4:12 NASB Let no one look down on your youthfulness, but rather in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity, show yourself an example of those who believe. 2Ti 2:22 NASB Now flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, faith, love and peace, with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart Remember Your Creator! Ecc. 12:1-8 Remember also your Creator in the days of your youth, before the evil days come and the years draw near when you will say, "I have no delight in them"; Ecc 12:1 NASB When we are young and learning the things of the Scriptures, we learn of your Creator. The foundations of future faith are laid. You can have a personal relationship with the Creator. Note: YOUR creator It is difficult for an older person to get saved. Life will get very busy very fast. Hebrews 2:1 – For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away from it. Epilogue 12: 9-12 Our textbook is the Bible, and the Holy Spirit is our Teacher: John 14:26 NASB "But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you. (14) "He will glorify Me, for He will take of Mine and will disclose it to you. (15) "All things that the Father has are Mine; therefore I said that He takes of Mine and will disclose it to you. Conclusion of the Matter – vs 13-14 Ecc 12:13-14 NASB The conclusion, when all has been heard, is: fear God and keep His commandments, because this applies to every person. (14) For God will bring every act to judgment, everything which is hidden, whether it is good or evil. Solomon gives us three things here if we want to make our lives count: (1) Fear God (v. 13). Ecclesiastes ends where the book of Proverbs begins (Prov. 1:7) (2) Keep His commandments (v. 13). read the instructions!” (Prov. 1:7). “because this applies to every person.” (3) Prepare for final judgment (v. 14). “God shall judge the righteous and the wicked” (3:17). “But know that for all these God will bring you into judgment” (11:9 NKJV).
