Irene Simon Ivambi is the founder and Chief Executive Officer of a hair company called “Mrembo Naturals.” Around 2019, Irene and a few friends developed a hair movement called “Natural Hair Movement” that focused on educating Tanzanian women on using natural hair products. This episode highlights the journey of Irene in establishing a business that helps women embrace their natural beauty. As a side effect of being introduced to the intensive use of hair relaxers when she was only 1 year old, she got brain scars. For this reason she established a hair business that is now making and selling hair products locally and internationally.

We're doing this 'fro the culture! In our last episode of the semester Brendane and Alyssa talk featurism, texturism, the politics of Black hair, and are joined by biological anthropologist Tina Lasisi. We'll be back in 2023 with new episodes. In the meantime, don't forget to submit your listener letters and voice notes to zorasdaughterspod@gmail.com and we might read or play it and respond in our next episode. Happy Holidays! What's the Word? Featurism and Texturism. These are colorism's insidious cousins: prejudicial or preferential treatment based on the proximity of their features and hair texture to Eurocentric standards of beauty. What We're Reading. ‘Don't Touch My Hair': Problematizing Representations of Black Women in Canada by Shaunasea Brown. We share our hair journeys, chat about using the term dreadlocks vs locs, examine Canadian contributions to the Natural Hair Movement and infamous cases of workplace hair discrimination in Canada, and demonstrate that we use our hair—or lack thereof—to claim space and exercise our right to be. What In The World?! We chat with Dr. Tina Lasisi, a biological anthropologist who specializes in the science of hair, skin, and human biological variation. We answer your burning scalp questions in a rapid fire, discuss scientific racism, the dangers of DNA phenotyping pseudoscience, and whether we really need to buy "Black" hair products. Today's episode features Yeimy Medina. She was born in Dominican Republic, grew up in Curacao. Growing up she never loved my natural hair and didn't think it was beautiful. In the Dominican Republic if you have natural hair it is considered “bad” hair. In 2019, a friend inspired Yeimy and encouraged her to love her natural hair the way that God created it. Yeimy did her big chop in April 2019 and had to learn how to love and care for her natural hair. She created a natural hair page because she wanted to encourage other women to love themselves the way that God made them. #OurClassroom #MulticulturalClassroom #NaturalHair #AfroLatino #bighairdontcare #podcast #OurClassroomPodcast #education #HairLove Credits:Guest: Yeimy MedinaHost: Roberto GermánEditor: Jabi Marketing (Javier Roche)
The Natural Hair Movement has thrived online in the last 10 years which has empowered Black women all around the world to wear their natural hair with pride but this movement was born out of political unrest in the 1960s in the USA. To understand the origins of the Natural Hair Movement and how this has grown today Leanne speaks to journalist and writer Valley Fontaine as well as three natural hair influencers, Curl Lea Travel, Stephy Lately and Yaa Yaa Asare. They touch on the extent to which the Natural Hair Movement is representative of all hair textures today, the way that texturism is still present in our day to day lives and they share some tips on how Leanne can have a successful transition from chemically straightened to natural hair. Also in this episode you'll hear the whole experience of Leanne's big chop, by none other than friend of the podcast Derek Clements. Latoya White, a Sales Manager from Richmond Texas, and I talk about George Floyd, the natural hair movement, diversity training, representation, colorism and so much more. Latoya's genetic makeup sparked her interest in biology and her pre-med focus in school. She's a huge supporter for Diversity & Inclusion efforts and exercises them daily in her personal and professional life. At the end of the day, Toya is hopeful that we will get to a place of fair and equal treatment... not better than... just fair and equal. That includes: pay, treatment by the police and business owners, neighbors, co-workers, politicians, people in other countries... the list goes on. Fair and equal treatment and opportunities as a starting point would be a great start. Connect with LaToya: Instagram: RAM2AKA Facebook: LaToya Ramsey White *** Have a question? On episode 59 of the podcast, we’re having a birthday party for a very special book. And that book is, Hair Story: Untangling the Roots of Black Hair in America. Hair Story is the first book that I ever wrote, with my good friend, the journalist and author, Ayana Byrd. Hair Story covers the history, politics, business and culture of Black hair from 15th century Africa to modern-day America. And today, we're going behind the scenes and looking back at how Hair Story came to be. Ayana and I birthed Hair Story 20 years ago and it debuted on February 1, 2001. Our publisher, St. Martin’s press, re-released the book in 2014 when we added two additional chapters and updated the text to incorporate all of the massive changes that had happened in the decade since the book’s debut. Namely the Internet became a thing in the world of Black hair and the Natural Hair Movement exploded. Ayana Byrd joins me on the show as we look back at the journey to get this groundbreaking book into the world and the massive impact Hair Story has had in its two decades of life. From college syllabi to high school classrooms, from beauty salons to documentary films, Hair Story has gone global. Literary Links from the Show You can buy Hair Story anywhere books are sold, including Bookshop.org and Amazon.com. To find out more about Ayana Byrd, visit her website. Listen to the audio documentary recently produced by the Canadian Broadcast Company about the history of Black hair where I was interviewed. To order your copy of Cicely Tyson's memoir, Just As I Am, check to see if Amazon has them back in stock. Or try Bookshop.org. Check out debut author J. Elle's exciting new YA novel called Wings of Ebony. Please remember to Rate and review the podcast on Apple Podcasts. You can also leave a tip on PayPal to help cover the costs of the show. In our 19th episode we discuss the always relevant and, for some reason, controversial topic of hair. Is having natural hair a political statement? Should we identify as part of a movement? What is the natural hair movement? Is it a true movement or is it just another boss-babe marketing tactic used to encourage us to buy expensive hair products? Join us as we discuss the "movement", our own hair journeys, and answer some of YOUR questions on this week's episode. Thank you for listening and stay brave in the gray.
