Round eight of the 2024 NRL Premiership is in the books, which means it's time for episode eight of the Rugby League Hour with Martin Devlin and Tony Kemp! Every Monday during the 2024 NRL season on The Platform, Devlin - host of It's Only Sport - is joined by one of the best rugby league analysts going around in Kemp, the ex-Warriors coach and Kiwis representative. After eight rounds are the main contenders beginning to make their move into the upper areas of the NRL ladder? The Cronulla Sharks are top of the table for the third successive week boasting a 6-1 record, following another big win, this time over the Raiders in Canberra 40-0. The Sharks are joined by the Melbourne Storm, Penrith Panthers, Manly Sea Eagles and Brisbane Broncos inside the top five - four of those teams made the finals in 2023, and look a good chance at contending for the top four this season. Just behind are the Dolphins, who suffered a surprise loss to the under-strength Newcastle Knights 18-14 at home. The Sydney Roosters - who put 60 on the Dragons on Anzac Day - and the Canterbury Bulldogs - who enjoyed the bye - round out the top eight. Marty and Kempy recap the most important games of the weekend including the Panthers holding off the North Queensland Cowboys and the Broncos blowing away the Wests Tigers. Then, it's Up The Wahs - a segment dedicated solely to the Warriors, who again endured a shock result, this time losing to the previously winless Gold Coast Titans 27-24 in Auckland on Anzac Day. The result sees the Warriors sit 12th, just one point outside the top eight. Can the Warriors' drop in form lately be entirely linked to injuries, or should they be putting these seemingly weaker teams away regardless? Marty and Kempy answer that and more.Next it's He's A Ledge, and this week it's a man who played a major role in the emergence of the Warriors as an NRL heavyweight in the early 21st century - Daniel Anderson. The 56-year-old coached the Mount Smart club for three and a half years, guiding them to a Grand Final appearance in 2002. He's had other head coaching roles with St Helens in the Super League, and the Parramatta Eels as well. Anderson talks about how the 2024 season is shaping up and the main contenders, his current role with the Roosters, the latest around his health following a surfing accident in December 2022 that left Anderson a quadriplegic, and more. Then, Marty and Kempy go head-to-head debating six rugby league topics, including whether or not the Warriors' top four chances for this season are over, and who out of the bottom four teams - the Eels, Tigers, Titans, and South Sydney Rabbitohs - has the best chance at moving up the ladder. Kempy hands out the Effluex clean-up award for the player, coach or team who did their job better than anyone else on the weekend - someone who rolled up their sleeves and turned gunk into gold. And to finish things off, Kempy lists his five best teams in the NRL right now on TK's Top 5.The Rugby League Hour is sponsored by MicroBio Solutions Limited, solving environmental issues using green technologies.
