In this episode of Oh Crap Potty Training, we're talking about a question that trips up so many parents: Should you tell your child ahead of time that you're starting potty training? Some kids need a heads-up, while others will use that time to dig in their heels. And what about when your toddler says, I'll potty train when I'm three—do you wait? (Spoiler: No.) Plus, we'll dive into why kids get so attached to diapers and how your language around potty training can make or break the process. Let's make this as smooth as possible—because trust me, drawn-out potty training is not the goal!(00:00:02) "Potty Training and Parenting Integration Podcast"(00:04:26) Positive Language for Successful Potty Training Transition(00:08:30) "Complete Commitment Accelerates Potty Training Progress"(00:14:11) Understanding Child Development Stages for Effective GuidancePeeing SolutionsPooping SolutionsWithholding GroupJamie's InstagramOh Crap! In this week's episode of Oh Crap Potty Training, I'm diving into something I see over and over with parents—how consistency can make or break your potty training journey (and your parenting in general). We chat about how anything done repeatedly becomes a habit, whether it's good or bad. So if your kid is peeing on the floor every day, guess what? That's their new normal. I'm breaking down why we sometimes let these patterns slip, how our toddlers are always watching and learning, and why you need to step into your leadership role as a parent—no asking for permission! We'll talk about shifting from bad consistency to good consistency, and why building that solid foundation in the 0-6 years is key to everything down the road. In this week's episode of Oh Crap Potty Training, I'm tackling two major potty training pitfalls: potty word salad and empty praise.
In this episode of Oh Crap Potty Training, I dive into the ins and outs of transitioning your child from a crib to a bed and why it's essential for successful night training. We're talking about fostering independence, avoiding common pitfalls like sleep sacks and bedtime bottles, and creating a sleep environment that actually works for both you and your kiddo. I'll share practical tips, including how light exposure affects circadian rhythms, and tackle those sleep “crutches” that might be holding you back in the long run. Plus, some thoughts on breaking habits early to make night training smoother. Let's set the stage for better sleep and potty training success! In this week's episode of Oh Crap Potty Training, I'm talking about something that trips up a lot of parents: staying authentic during potty training. It's easy to slip into “teacher mode” with a serious voice and extra pressure, but that can put your child on high alert and actually slow down progress. I share how to approach potty training as your real, everyday self—mistakes, messes, and all—so your child feels safe and supported during this big milestone. Remember, potty training isn't a test of your parenting skills; it's a learning process for your child. Let's keep it real and make it work! In this week's episode of Oh Crap Potty Training, I'm focusing on the importance of balancing short-term wins with long-term goals in parenting. We'll look at why quick fixes, like keeping your child in a crib or using sleep sacks, might feel easier now but can create challenges down the road—like dependency or bedwetting. I also discuss why proactive steps, like early night training and introducing your child to public restrooms, are essential for building long-term confidence and independence. Parenting isn't just about managing the moment; it's about making conscious choices that set our kids up for success in the future. In this week's episode of Oh Crap Potty Training, we're tackling the tricky topic of rewards and consequences in potty training—and parenting in general. I explain why rewards can actually lead to more problems, especially with young kids, and how we can shift from a controlling approach to one that supports autonomy and self-mastery. I also share thoughts on natural consequences, why it's so important to give our kids more responsibility, and how these strategies build confidence in their ability to manage their own bodies. I shared this episode on Oh Crap Parenting last week but because I think it's so important I couldn't go without sharing it here on Oh Crap Potty Training too. I address what might be the most important topic we've covered to date: the impact of parental exhaustion and the crucial need for connection with our kids. Lately, I've been seeing more and more behavioral issues—meltdowns, out-of-control behavior, even potty training setbacks—and I believe it all boils down to a lack of connection and the frantic pace of our lives. In this episode, I talk about how slowing down, reducing outside activities, and focusing on being truly present with our children can make all the difference. This isn't just another parenting tip—it's about creating a calm, connected family life that helps our kids thrive. My friend Jamie Glowacki is a badass mother. In the rainbow tapestry of influences on my parenting style, Jamie is one of the gorgeous threads. We met over five years ago, when she was a client for another marketing agency I worked with. At that time, she was the foremost respected expert on... drumroll please... potty training. Now, Jamie is an internationally recognized parenting expert. She's the author of the best selling books Oh Crap Potty Training and Oh Crap I Have a Toddler. It turns out that her former careers as circus performer and social worker make her uniquely qualified to deal with toddlers... and poop. And... as her work grew, she realized unhealed trauma in parents vastly affects parenting. She's now committed to helping parents heal that trauma through some pretty unconventional healing modalities. Jamie and I have always had some fun parallels. When I was moving to Costa Rica, she decided to buy a house in the exact community I moved to. We both play and work in the realm of plant medicine and psychedelics. We are both total renegade mamas, navigating the shift from old school to new paradigm parenting. She's got a son, Pascal, much older than my Indy, but who reminds me of what my son could be like as he matures into a young man. We went deep on boundaries, transparent communication with our children, and the importance of healing our trauma. Jamie's in-your-face insight is both empathic and confronting. Check 'er out... Is your child refusing to sit on the toilet? Or waiting until the pull-up is on to go poop? You're not alone. For a lot of parents, the potty learning process is more drawn out than we anticipate. For some, it takes months or even years. In previous episodes, you heard some common potty-training scenarios. We shared the advice of the author of Oh Crap Potty Training and Nicole Kavanaugh's Montessori approach. When your kiddos say goodbye to diapers, adventures look a whole lot different. Easier or harder? You decide! But there may be a period of time where you're adventuring with a toilet in tow, until they master the outdoor squat. Don't worry – you can still get outside, even in the learning-phase. We have expert Jamie Glowacki on today's podcast, to talk all things toddlers and poop! Jamie Glowacki is an internationally recognized potty training and parenting expert. She is the author of both Oh Crap Potty Training and Oh Crap I Have a Toddler. When to Start Potty Training: “Wait until they are ready” is the biggest myth (tune in to learn why) 20 to 30 months is prime age, if not earlier After 30 months, children get individuation, making the process much harder Remember that using a toilet is socialized behaviour How Much Time Is Needed to Stay Home to Focus on Learning the Toilet (and how can you also get outside): Devote at least 4 days to staying home Jamie's book is in blocks of learning, instead of specific time frames, as each child will progress differently In desperate times, throw a diaper on for a hike or car ride if you need, just don't get too dependent on it, but STILL go outside The outdoors and actions such as throwing, help release the pelvic floor, so it will actually help kids who are withholding, to release Hike and adventure with a potty chair Don't forget to have your kids wear two-piece everything!
