Many people spend years in therapy and still struggle to feel truly safe in relationships. But why is this? The answer lies in the body. You can understand your trauma, but still feel unsafe. Oxytocin helps turn that understanding into actual feelings of safety in your body. Known as nature's most powerful anti-inflammatory, oxytocin plays a vital role in regulating the nervous system, forming secure connections, and shifting the body out of survival mode. In this episode, Dr. Aimie is joined by world-renowned oxytocin expert Dr. Sue Carter to discuss how this hormone holds the key to healing trauma, creating genuine safety, and forming secure connections. Dr. Carter has studied oxytocin for over four decades and reveals why this hormone is essential for moving from survival to thriving. In this conversation you hear why traditional talk therapy alone often falls short, how early life experiences program our capacity for connection, and practical tools for naturally increasing oxytocin to create a felt sense of safety in your body. You'll learn more about: How early attachment experiences shape your nervous system and relationships The difference between vasopressin and oxytocin in the stress response How trauma and chronic stress disrupt your ability to feel safe, even in loving relationships Why oxytocin is nature's “fire extinguisher” for inflammation and chronic illness Practical tools to support healing and regulate your nervous system And more! Whether you're a practitioner or someone navigating your own healing journey, this episode offers evidence-based insights into how your body creates its own pharmacy of healing hormones and why safety in relationships is the biological foundation for all healing   Helpful Links Related To This Episode: Want to know more about the Safe and Sound Protocol mentioned in the episode? Preventing people from moving when something terrible happens is what makes trauma a trauma. In this mini episode, Dr. Aimie dives into the biology behind why not being able to move (either physically or internally) can create trauma. She looks more closely at the moment in the trauma response that she calls "hitting the wall" - the pivotal point where we feel powerless and our physiology shifts from a stress response to a trauma response. Dr. Aimie also explains that our neuroception (nervous system's perception) determines whether we take action or shut down, and this process isn't based on reality but on our perceived capacity against perceived danger. So when we feel overwhelmed, our nervous system prevents movement as a way to protect us. You'll hear more about: The five steps of trauma response and why "the wall" is the most significant How our nervous system can block our own movement The biological factors that influence our capacity to respond vs. shut down And more! Fighting for CCPT: How to Advocate for Child-Centered Play Therapy in Sexual Abuse Cases and Trauma Work

In this episode, I answer a question from Lisa in Maryland about the role of Child-Centered Play Therapy (CCPT) in cases involving trauma and sexual behavior. Many legal and child protection systems lean toward directive interventions, often dismissing CCPT. However, research overwhelmingly supports CCPT as an effective, developmentally appropriate approach for helping children process trauma in a safe and natural way. I discuss how we, as play therapists, can advocate for the model, educate stakeholders, and navigate the challenges of working with children who have experienced trauma. I also highlight key research, including Landreth and Homeyer's work on play behaviors in sexually abused children, and emphasize the importance of trusting the CCPT process. When we create a space where children feel safe, they will process their experiences in their own way and time—without the retraumatization of forced disclosures. If you've ever wondered how to defend CCPT in trauma cases or how to recognize post-trauma play in your sessions, this episode is for you. How does trauma impact the “hidden spaces” of our body, making emotions and toxins deeply connected? Welcome to today's episode, where we're diving into a fascinating frontier of healing that might just explain why traditional approaches to trauma and chronic pain sometimes fall short.  Whether you're a practitioner working with clients or patients or someone on your own healing journey, you've likely noticed that trauma and stress seem to leave their mark on the body in ways that talk therapy alone can't always reach. Maybe you've experienced or witnessed how emotional stress shows up as physical pain, or how physical treatments sometimes trigger unexpected emotional releases.  There's a reason for this, and one reason lives in a part of your body that, until recently, has been largely overlooked: fascia and extracellular matrix. Don't worry if these terms are new to you – we're going to break down these complex systems into practical understanding that you can use. What's exciting is that this knowledge bridges the gap between physical and emotional healing. To help us understand this topic, I'm joined by my friend Dr. Christine Schaffner, a board-certified naturopathic physician and an expert in treating complex chronic conditions from her clinic in Seattle, where she uses innovative therapies that focus on the body's natural ability to heal. In this episode, we'll explore: How trauma is stored in the fascia and extracellular matrix How fascia impacts everything from chronic pain to emotional resilience Why lymphatic health needs to be part of trauma recovery  Why a detox can cause emotional reactions  How to safely approach detox  Practical simple steps to support your body's healing process that you can do at home. The Awakened Man
Why Inner Child Trauma Work DOESN'T Work

The Awakened Man

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 3, 2024 26:24

1. Inner child work, popularized by coaches and gurus, is a recycled concept from 190 years of psychology that has limitations and may not be the most effective approach to personal growth. 2. Focusing on inner child work and personal development may not lead to worldly success, and true growth requires engagement with the present. 3. Past experiences and theories can be misleading when analyzing current issues due to imperfect memory, cherry-picking data, and overapplication of single theories. 4. Understanding the cause of pain isn't enough to alleviate it, taking action is. 5. Mental health diagnoses often lack clear causes and scientific basis, leading to vague labels and over-pathologization of common issues. 6. ADHD is not a proven medical condition, but rather a label used to justify medicating millions of American children, lacking evidence linking it to a specific brain disease. 7. Focusing on the present, not the past, is key to solving problems and achieving lasting solutions. 8. To achieve a lasting solution to personal problems, one must work on resolving them in the present, learn from them, and apply those lessons to the future. Here are the 2 categories to sort the insights: Looking backwards to childhood experiences can be problematic, as it focuses attention on the past rather than the present and future. ⚠️ "We have no work excavating the past because when we do inner child work, we're literally blocking ourselves from engaging with the present." There's a fallacy in social science research called "post hoc ergo propter hoc," which means assuming that because one event happened before another, the early event caused the later one. Every ingredient from our past may have a bearing on our current issues, but it's essential to question whether they truly have an impact or are just coincidental. ⚠️ The danger is that once you have a theory, you can just pick out the items that fit your theory and disregard the rest. The only way to have a true lasting solution to current personal problems is to work at it in the present, resolve it in the present, and apply what's learned to the future. Knowing the cause of pain doesn't stop the pain, but taking action to address it does. Knowing the cause of our psychic pain but having no Avenue to reduce it will actually make some of us feel even worse. "The difference between literal and metaphoric illness has been blurred by too many coaches and gurus who read a book or two." Refusing treatment for a DSM diagnosis can lead to another diagnosis, "non-compliance with treatment disorder", as pointed out by Jord Peterson. There isn't one shred of medical evidence that ADHD is caused by any specific brain disease.

She has been recognized by Psychology Today, Time Business News, The New York Post, Yahoo! These teachings have been distilled into the in-depth programs, courses, and modules inside of The Personal Development School. Here are some of things we talked about in today's podcast: Attachment styles are subconscious rules we have for love and connection that are formed in childhood. Our subconscious mind plays a significant role in our beliefs, thoughts, emotions, and actions. Core wounds from childhood are stored in the subconscious mind and can impact our relationships. Reprogramming core wounds can be done through techniques like autosuggestion and meeting our unmet needs.  Coping mechanisms are subconscious strategies to meet our needs or provide relief from negative thoughts and beliefs. Understanding and addressing core wounds is crucial for developing healthier coping mechanisms. Setting boundaries around coping mechanisms can be beneficial for emotional well-being. Practicing vulnerability in small increments through exposure work can help individuals overcome their fear of unpacking uncomfortable emotions and experiences. Self-compassion is essential on the journey of healing, and taking responsibility for personal growth is key to creating positive change. And much more.    Link to her free attachment-style quiz: Quiz Link to her book, LEARNING LOVE: Book Listeners can use brian25off for a discounted rate at The Personal Development School (Website) Personal Development | Attachment Styles | The Personal Development School (Instagram) Thais Gibson (@thaisgibson) • Instagram photos and videos Thais Gibson (@thepersonaldevelopmentschool) • Instagram photos and videos   (Youtube) The Personal Development School - YouTube (Facebook) www.facebook.com/ThePersonalDevelopmentSchool/ (Apple Podcast) Personal Development School on Apple Podcasts (Tiktok) Personal Development School (@thaisgibson) | TikTok
