Cork artist Yenkee aka Graham Cooney released his long-awaited debut album Night Golf via Soft Boy Records on October 25. He talks about making the album, being inspired by labelmates Kojaque and Kean Kavanagh, life in London, the dream of owning a house, the housing crisis, songwriting, and lots more on this episode of TPOE. Yenkee tour dates: December 1: Upstairs at Whelan's, Dublin December 10: Old Blue Last, London December 15: Folklore Rooms, Brighton December 21: City Hall, Cork Buy Night Golf: https://yenkee.bandcamp.com/album/night-golf --- Press release: Yenkee is now based in London, but it's where he was raised on the Northside of Cork City in Ireland where he developed his admiration for simplicity and his love for music. “Being Irish, you are always brought up around music and song. It's so ingrained, you can't avoid it”. It's this immersion that bred inspiration from a diverse array of artists. Arthur Russell's versatility, Dolly Parton's timeless songwriting, Manu Chao's eclectic style, Talking Heads' playful spirit and Fionn Regan's graceful depictions of Ireland all play a role in who Yenkee is today. His early projects, marked by an experimental spirit and a penchant for blending genres, laid the groundwork for what would become Yenkee. The transition to a solo career allowed him to fully explore his artistic vision, leading to a widely loved series of singles and EPs that garnered him placements on TV series' Normal People and Conversations With Friends and finding fans in people like Florence Pugh. Throughout these early days of Yenkee, ‘Night Golf' would begin to develop. It all started with a throwaway tweet Yenkee had posted in 2014 that simply said “#NightGolf”. The phrase stuck with him for years, eventually guiding the whole album's creation. “I had songs written but I just thought right, that's the name of the album. How do I fit the music around that title?.” The name inspired a strong visual component and evoked an 80s musical awakening within, guiding Yenkee back to his love for that era's music with Prefab Sprout, in particular, becoming a significant influence. Yenkee recorded most of the album himself in various makeshift setups, but his best days were spent with others. Whether that was with producer Peter Brien in his Belfast studio, working with Adam Kaye in Hackney or knocking out single-session songs with Karma Kid in South London, it was these moments that solidified what the album would become. ‘Night Golf' is a labour of love, a project born out of instinct rather than meticulous planning, designed more for dancing than deep contemplation. As Yenkee puts it, “It's only music at the end of the day.”
Roger Mairlot, a retired car mechanic in his 70s, takes center stage in this episode of Seeing Them Live. Renowned for his passionate dedication to live music, Roger's story has attracted the attention of media giants like Vice News, The Guardian, and CBC Radio Canada. With an astonishing personal record of attending over 725 consecutive gigs and accomplishing the feat of attending six gigs in one night at different venues across London, Roger has become an icon in the city's live music scene. His distinctive ornate military jacket, adorned with badges, has earned him the affectionate name "The Gig Slut" from Debbie Smith of the band Blindness.Reflecting on his early music experiences, Roger shares memories of a Joan Baez concert in the 1960s, marking the beginning of his journey through London's rich music scene. The cultural and social aspects of live performances are explored, emphasizing the intimate connection between the audience and the artists. Roger's passion for live music goes beyond attendance; he meticulously documents gig timings and schedules in "The Book of Bands," showcasing his dedication to discovering new bands and genres. The conversation delves into Roger's connection to the Mod Culture, influenced by bands like The Who and The Kinks, and explores his experiences in London's music scene during the 1970s. Notable bands from that era, including Canned Heat and Queen, are mentioned, while Roger reflects on the changing music landscape in the '70s.Roger's transition to retirement in the early 2000s allowed for greater flexibility in attending gigs, leading to a revival of his interest in live music. Charles and Roger discuss the impact of Mod Culture, Roger's favorite band, The Kinks, and his experiences seeing iconic artists like Jimi Hendrix. Roger's signature look, the guard's jacket, is born out of his paper rounds, which he took on to finance his gigging passion during his early waking hours. The episode delves into Roger's mad gigging phase, discussing his gigging routine, how he justified spending money on gigs through his paper round earnings, and the development of detailed schedules for nightly gig adventures. The conversation also touches on Roger's extensive guard's jacket collection and the experiences he had wearing them.In 2014, Roger pushed the limits by attending six gigs in one night, facing challenges in managing multiple venues and early start times. The episode explores Roger's criteria for choosing gigs, post-pandemic changes in the gig scene, and the decline in fan attendance. Despite the challenges, Roger emphasizes the importance of enjoying a gig and shares his diverse taste in music, spanning genres from jazz to chamber rock.BANDS: Adam Ant, Blindness, Blue Crime, Canned Heat, Color TV, Cream, Fleetwood Mac, Jimmy Hendrix, Joan Baez, Ogunquit, The Breeders, The Kinks, The Libertines, The Palpitations, The WhoVENUES: 100 Club, Camden (general reference to the area), Pure Groove, Rough Trade, Royal Festival Hall, Sculpture of St. James, The Clarendon Hotel, The Dublin Castle, The George Robey, The Hammersmith Odeon, The Hope and Anchor, The Kings Head, The Kursal, The Lock Tavern, The Marquee Club, The Monarch, The Old Blue Last, The Purple Turtle, The Roundhouse.More information including photos and links available at https://www.SeeingThemLive.com. Together with American Songwriter, we had the pleasure of interviewing Missio over Zoom video!"Missio" is Latin for mission. And what at one time began as a side project for singersongwriter Matthew Brue has now shifted into the main mission. Accompanied by producer and instrumentalist David Butler, MISSIO sports an alternative/electronic sound with beatdriven hip-hop undertones. Atmospheric and expressive, this electro-alternative act is keen on a spirit of experimentation.Based in Austin, Texas, MISSIO broke out in 2017 with their single “Middle Fingers” whichreached top 10 at U.S. Alternative Radio, later leading to an appearance on the late night’sCONAN amid the launch of their debut album Loner. That same album also spawned heavily rotated songs like “Bottom of the Deep Blue Sea,” “Everybody Gets High,” and “Twisted,” which all reached over 50 million streams each (and counting) on streaming platforms.MISSIO released their second album The Darker the Weather // The Better the Man in mid2019, broadening their sonic palette with songs like “I See You” which was the #1 song onthe Sirius XM Alt 18 for 9 total weeks. During this album campaign, their streaming audience tripled and they capped off their album cycle by releasing the single “Sing to Me” as part of the soundtrack to the global video game phenomenon Death Stranding alongside artists such as Chvrches, Major Lazer, Khalid, & Bring Me the Horizon. The band decided to document their creative process and personal growth during the recording process of this album, and ended up also releasing a documentary with accompanying soundtrack which they wrote and scored titled Love Me Whole.MISSIO has now accumulated close to one billion streams within three years and two albumreleases.Beginning the next stage in their music evolution, Matthew and David landed back in theirhome base of Austin, Texas this past November with their producer, co-writer, and creativepartner Dwight Baker, and over a feverish 21 day period wrote and recorded the entirety oftheir new album, Can You Feel The Sun (via 2B Recordings / BMG).The band started with a range of demos that eventually snowballed into being a complete and finished full-length album.“We worked until we felt like we were done and then one day woke up and knew we had afinished album”, says David. “Even from the very beginning of the process I already knewthat ‘Can You Feel the Sun’ was one of the best songs we’d ever written and knew that wehad something special.”MISSIO have toured the United States extensively as headliners, and through several largesupport slots for the likes of MUSE, 30 Seconds to Mars, Yungblud, and K. Flay. The duo have also performed at major festivals like Lollapalooza, Austin City Limits, Firefly, Hangout, Bottle Rock, and Voodoo Fest. As part of a wider European tour, they made their sold-out UK live debut at London’s Old Blue Last in May 2019. Their high energy live performances and custom-built light shows easily set them apart from their peers.MISSIO returned overseas in early March 2020, but the second half of their European tourwas cancelled as the band were pulled off their tour bus at 2AM whilst crossing the Czechborder, so that men in hazmat suits could check their temperatures to ensure that the touring party didn’t have COVID-19. They raced to get home on the final day before the U.S. borders were closed.Regardless of not being able to tour for the rest of the year, the band have decided to forge ahead with releasing their new music. They put out first single “Wolves” on June 24, which reached #1 on the Sirius XM Alt Nation ‘Top 18’ within three weeks. This is their 4th #1 single on the countdown to date.We want to hear from you! Thumper are absolutely doing it right. There's was the type of headline show that made me take a second look at what I've been doing with my band. I'm very grateful to my friend Shane for getting me to come to this show - he is clearly a man with great taste - and I am very grateful to Thumper for putting on a great show and being kind enough to talk to me afterwards too. After listening to this, you're gonna want to fill your boots with as much of this band as you can get, and you can do that here -- https://open.spotify.com/artist/1iMsLpQB3kldZ9s7pne7gP?si=N3UOJyo1QdWbgeodJY-CvA -- https://www.facebook.com/hellothumper -- Thank you all for listening. -- Take Care --
Classic Yellow had just played in London for the first time before talking to me. I'm not a betting man, but the smart money tells me it won't be the last time they play here. Enormous thanks to my friend Shane for bringing me to this show, and thank you to all of Classic Yellow for talking to me (and Samuel for getting the last word in). This week Steve and Remfry discuss the ‘controversy’ around the completely uncontroversial decision to let Parkway Drive headline the Saturday night of Bloodstock. Steve certainly doesn’t think it’s a bad idea after seeing their attempt to blow up London’s Alexandra Palace. Remfry plumped for a slightly smaller show with around 10,250 less people in attendance for Ithaca’s album launch show at East London’s fashionable end in the East of London which is so very fashionable because it’s East London and fashionable Old Blue Last in Shoreditch.Album reviews come courtesy of Ian Brown, Bob Mould and Astronoid and the trade–off covers two albums at very different ends of the musical spectrum in the form of ‘Good To Feel’ by Candy and ‘30-Something’ by Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine. As promised I swung by The Old Blue Last to catch up with Worst Place again, and I also had a quick chat with Ollie who sings and plays guitar in Living Island. Look, you've already seen the run time, so you know it's a lengthy episode. But trust me, it's all worth it. The people I speak to - in this specific chronological order - are: The Regulars aka Francisco, Roger, and James On any given night there's a good chance one of these folks will be at the gig I'm attending, and on this night all three of them happened to be there. I've spoken to James before on episode 44, and Roger (with James) on episode 68. You can see some of James' photography here: -- https://www.instagram.com/66james99 -- Dancehall -- https://www.instagram.com/dancehallband -- Tim, Craig, and Dave put on a most impressive show, and they happen to make for equally entertaining podcast guests. Don't worry if you don't fully understand all that is going on during this chat, just embrace the chaos. Also the beeping was coming from someone's backpack. They work in a kitchen and use the alarm regularly during their shift. Fun fact there. Kramer -- https://www.instagram.com/kramerdoingbits -- & -- https://www.instagram.com/saxon_zine -- I last spoke to Kramer on episode 44 (same as James) when he was putting on a show at Old Blue Last. I fully respect his hustle and enjoy hearing the process behind what he achieves. If you ever see a show with the name Saxon Zine attached, you should trust that it'll be worth your time. Stephanie from Yassassin -- https://www.instagram.com/yassassin_band -- Yassassin are a 5-piece band from London. I first saw them at the Sonic Tonic All-Dayer at The Brixton Windmill (on episode 16 of this podcast) but this was the first time I've spoken to the band for the podcast. The full band is Anna on vocals, Joanna on lead guitar, Moa on rhythm guitar, Nathalia on bass, and Stephanie - my guest - on drums. They are a blast on stage, and she was great to talk to. Thank you to everyone for taking part on this episode, and for an awesome show. Moment of silence for the passing of The Lock Tavern. I hope I get to go there once more before it closes it's doors for good, but if not this night was a great send off for me. Thanks for listening. I'm also sorry that I missed the show of the headline band, Hey Elbow ( -- https://en-gb.facebook.com/heyelbow/ -- ), AND I didn't get to talk to them for the podcast, AND AND I got the other bands to sign THEIR poster but not them. INTERVIEW @ 22:22 mark Get Involved!, the new band featuring ex- members of Thursday, GlassJaw and From Autumn To Ashes is thrilled to announce the release of their upcoming EP, "Silk Cuts". The EP was produced by the legendary Ross Robinson (At The Drive- In, The Cure) and will see worldwide digital release March 4th, 2014. Composed of guitarist Todd Weinstock (glassjaw), guitarist Brian Deneeve (From Autumn To Ashes), drummer Tucker Rule (Thursday), lead vocalist Derrick Karg- Zamudio and bassist Marcus Russell Price, Get Involved!'s post-hardcore pedigree is the strikingly original music they've managed to craft over the past year and a half. While Get Involved!'s roots lie in aggressive music, the band were conscious to avoid relying on the formulaic trappings of punk/hardcore in favour of creating a progressive brand of music that transcends the genre while still implementing the stylistic hallmarks that have endeared them to fans over the years. From the catchy catharsis of "Serenity Now" to the syncopated sing-along "Paint It Gold," these four songs showcase how much each player has progressed since their previous acts and listeners who aren't familiar with Karg-Zamudio will literally be blown away by the acrobatic power of his distinctive pipes as it rises above the pummeling instrumentation. From the Snapcase-inspired post-hardcore drive of "Let Your Guard Down" to the alternately captivating and crushing nature of "Apathy," this EP showcases the various sides of Get Involved! and is precursor to what these seasoned musicians are like onstage. The band will be performing a free show at The Old Blue Last, an infamous venue owned by VICE in Shoreditch, East London on March 26th. For more information on the show, please visit: http://www.theoldbluelast.com/ "The live show is where we give three million percent because with this type of music you can't help but throw yourself into it or not do it at all," Rule explains. "It feels like we've all been playing together much longer than we have," Weinstock summarises, adding that the band will be touring and working on a full-length in 2014. "It already sounds like we've been through a war together and we're just getting started."
