Send us a textShow goats are held to strict conformational standards, but we often overlook the fact that our own herds would benefit from those same conformational standards. Extra teats, bad legs, weak pasterns, and crooked faces may sound as though they aren't that big of a deal outside of the show ring, but those standards have practical reasoning behind them. Ultimately, they produce a strong, sound specimen that can live a long, productive life. Don't we all want that for our goats, even those that will never see a show ring?  In this episode, we're talking to Emily Thompson who has been an ADGA judge for 24 years, co-chaired several committees, served on the Linear Appraisal Committee, and raises Alpines and Toggenburgs with her family under the Kara Kahl Alpines and the Legendairy Toggenburg herd names. Emily offers clarification on breed standards in the ADGA Guidebook, the two areas that award the most points in the show ring and why, and the importance of a good mammary system. She also covers what to look for regarding good conformation when purchasing a new goat, defects that will never go away (and some surprising ones that may), as well as some serious defects that should immediately land a goat into either the non-breeding pet or freezer category.See full show notes here >> https://thriftyhomesteader.com/goat-conformation/To see the most recent episodes, visit  ForTheLoveOfGoats.comWant to support the content you love?Head over to -- https://thrifty-homesteader.ck.page/products/love-goats-tip-jarThanks for listening! No one ever said raising goats was easy, but it doesn't have to cost a fortune or drive you crazy!

- Charles Leclerc's first win since July 2022 - Max Verstappen started and finished the race sixth for Red Bull - Early crash took out Sergio Perez, Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc won the restarted Monaco Grand Prix from pole position today for his first Formula 1 victory in nearly two years. Leclerc was on pole for the third time in four years, but had previously never finished on the podium at his home race. His first win since Austria in July 2022 took his career tally to six, all with Ferrari. “Tonight's going to be a big night,” he told his team over the radio. A Monaco victory felt extra special for him, having grown up in a flat overlooking the start-finish line watching cars zooming past below. “No words can explain that. It was the race that made me want to be a Formula 1 driver one day,” the 26-year-old Leclerc said. “Seeing so many of my friends on the balcony, so many people I know. It means a huge amount to me.” The last 15 laps were the most difficult as the realisation of how much winning would mean dawned on him. “I must say I was thinking about my dad,” Leclerc said of his late father. “It was a dream of ours for me to race here and win, so it's unbelievable.” Championship leader Max Verstappen is bidding for a fourth straight F1 title and saw his lead trimmed to 31 points over second-place Leclerc — 169-138 — with eight races completed. Verstappen started and finished the race sixth for Red Bull, whose other driver Sergio Perez went out of the race after a big first-lap crash. The crash also took out Haas drivers Kevin Magnussen and Nico Hulkenberg, and caused it to be interrupted by a red flag for 40 minutes. The drivers were not hurt. The race restarted on Lap 3 of 78 and the drivers pulled away cleanly but slowly, with Leclerc managing his tires on a track notoriously difficult for overtaking. Leclerc finished about 8 seconds ahead of McLaren's Oscar Piastri and 9 seconds clear of Ferrari teammate Carlos Sainz Jr. in third. McLaren's Lando Norris was fourth and Mercedes driver George Russell held off Verstappen to take fifth place. Seven-time F1 champion Lewis Hamilton was seventh, with Yuki Tsunoda (Racing Bulls), Alex Albon (Williams) and Pierre Gasly (Alpine) completing the top 10. It was the same order as the starting grid, reflecting Monaco's reputation as the hardest track to overtake in F1. “The pace at the beginning was incredibly slow,” Piastri said. “But it's been a great weekend for the team.” All of the drama came at the start. Perez's right rear wheel was clipped by the front left tire of Magnussen behind him and put Perez into the crash barrier. Perez's car almost split in half and also sent Hulkenberg's Haas spinning as he followed behind. A red flag came out with debris littering the track to allow Perez's mangled Red Bull to be cleared away by a crane. The Mexican driver walked back accompanied by two race marshals. His team said he did not need medical checks. Then, two Alpines tangled near the tunnel with Esteban Ocon's front nose sending teammate Pierre Gasly's car up in the air. With other cars just behind and the tunnel approaching, a serious accident was avoided. Ocon will serve a five-place grid penalty at the next race, the Canada GP on June 9. “Today's incident was my fault,” Ocon said. “The gap was too small in the end.” Governing body FIA ordered a standing restart with Leclerc in pole ahead of Piastri and Sainz going from third, despite puncturing moments after the start. He was trying to pass Piastri and had to use a run-off area at Casino Square. French football star Kylian Mbappé and FIFA president Gianni Infantino were among the guests enjoying the bright sunshine. But the race proved a processional affair. Following the restart, cars trundled around the 3.3-kilometre (2-mile) narrow street circuit as Leclerc seemed determined to make his tires last until the end. Piastri sat on his tail, and by the halfway point he was around 1 second behind, but Leclerc picked up the pace. “To be honest Charles has been mega all weekend,” Piastri said. “It probably would have taken the best lap of my life (in qualifying). I'm happy with P2.” There was not much action to entertain fans, some of whom spent thousands on VIP tickets. Lance Stroll's left tyre came off as he entered the pit lane on lap 50, but little else happened as Leclerc gradually extended his lead and ended his barren run. “It's just impossible to get past on the streets of Monaco,” Sainz said. “But I'm very happy for Charles.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Spring is the time of the gardening year where all gardeners sigh with relief, it's really time to get out and about and enjoy the wonderful world of horticulture.  A garden waking up and showing its early colour and form is a wonderful space to live and work in, an it's no exception that Lucy and Saul revel in this time of year, as their gardening lives start to get busier with sowing, planting, propagation, mowing, mulching and all other gardening tasks. Sprinkle in some early flower shows and the odd plant fair and our gardening life is complete, so thank god for Spring! Most outdoor gardening is on hold until we finally dry out - especially in Devon where Saul has received roughly two and a half times the average rainfall over March! Several years ago, Penn Allen inherited a collection of diaries that had been meticulously maintained by her great grandmother. Penn discovered the diaries documented the building of her great grandmother and grandfather's Arts and Crafts house and the development of the garden that followed. She uncovered an untold story of her family, of plant hunting and of rock gardens - one that has significance to the wider world of horticultural history and in fact, goes some way to rewriting it.    Dr Ian Bedford's Bug of the Week: Buddleias and Butterfly Tongues What We Talk About  What the book is about and why Penn felt it was important to write it How the garden helped heal; through providing a space to contemplate, a space to communicate, a distraction… Alpines and rock gardening Plant hunters Reginald Farrer Will Purdom What became of house and garden About Penn Allen Having spent most of my life in the UK, I moved permanently to the beautiful Lot region in SW France with my husband around fifteen years ago.  I have a passion for my garden and the outdoors and can generally be found either striding over a windswept hillside or upside down in my flower beds, always with a Labrador or two by my side.  The Lost Garden of Loughrigg is my first story, though hopefully not my last! Burke Reid is a Canadian-Australian producer, who began his career as part of the seminal Australian alt-rock trio Gerling. After ten years in the band, and 4 critically and commercially successful albums, he left to pursue a career solely in production. His very first full length role, The Mess Hall's Devil's Elbow won the Australia Music Prize and set him off on a fascinating and varied career as one of alternative music's most interesting and in demand producers. Work with Courtney Barnett - whose album “Sometimes I sit and think, sometimes I just sit” also nabbed an AMP Award, DZ Deathrays, Flyte, Julia Jacklin and Sports Team have followed.  He relocated to the UK just as the world went into lockdown back in 2020, but we were lucky to be able to speak with him in person at my studio, Hackney Road, and hear the story about how he went from cult rock star musician with Gerling, to cult rock music producer. An Australian by birth, producer and mixer Catherine is now based in London England. She begun her career after a chance meeting with super producer flood at a Nick Cave concert in the early 2000s. Abandoning a career in architecture she moved to London full time to assist at his legendary Assault and Battery Studios in Willesden. Engineering work on albums by artists such as PJ Harvey, Foals, and Interpol followed. Despite initially following a career in mixing her work on Wolf Alice's Creature Songs E.P led her to take the producer's chair on albums by some of the 21st century's most exciting rock and alternative acts including the amazons, The Big Moon, The Mysterines, Manchester Orchestra and The Wombats. She also recently worked on ALanis Morrisette's 2020 come back album Such Pretty Forks in the Road. In 2018 she was voted the Music producers guild Producer of the year . She recently moved to her own new studio space in Kensal Town and this is where she dialed in to talk to us. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Originally combining her nascent mastering career with a full time role as an audio archivist, a nomination for the MPG (Music Producers Guild) Mastering Engineer of the Year award saw her, after a period of reflection she talks about in this interview, taking on her craft full time. Credits with Mercury nominated Nadine Shah, Mercury winner Arlo Parks, Los Bitchos and Ash, amongst many others, followed as well as two further nominations for the MPG Mastering Engineer of the Year award. She has also recently started a mastering collective, Weird Jungle, that brings together like minded mastering engineers under one umbrella to offer the best service to the diverse range of artists Katie works with. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. Lawrence cut his teeth playing and writing in Indie bands before finding international success and touring the world with his band CITIZENS! During that time he worked with a host of revered producers including Liam Howe, Mark Ralph and Alex Kapranos. Since the band ended in 2016 he's been using that experience to help other artists develop their careers as a writer and producer while continuing to release his own music under various different guises. Bob learned his trade as the producer and multi-instrumentalist in Electronic Pop duo Alpines, whose career spans 3 albums, releases on major and indie record labels, shows with Florence + The Machine, The xx, Emeli Sandé, and a top 20 hit 'Tidal Wave' in collaboration with Sub Focus. In recent years he has turned his focus to producing other acts and has a studio in Chiswick in West London. This week, we speak to a specialist vocal producer first time. Cameron Gower Poole graduated from the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts (LIPA), and made his way up the production ladder at Trevor Horn's Sarm studios. After excelling as an engineer in vocal recording sessions, Cameron built a reputation as someone who could get the best out of an artist's singing performance. After being nominated for breakthrough producer of the year by the Music Producer's Guild in 2021, and then vocal producer of the year in 2022, he's worked with an array of pop stars, including Dua Lipa on her grammy nominated Future Nostalgia album, Rita Sawayama, Anne-Marie, and Mahalia, to name a few. We speak to Cameron at his London studio about his role, and how he found it. The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews. This week, we speak to Leo Abrahams. Leo is a musician, composer and producer. Although classically trained, he left behind a degree in composition at the royal academy to play guitar for Imogen Heap, and later, Ed Harcourt as part of their touring bands. A chance encounter with production legend Brian Eno led to him assisting on a variety of projects, often helping to ‘finish' the myriad of releases Brian would be working across. This led to him taking on more production roles and Leo has since built a fascinating C.V. that includes Frightened Rabbit, Wild Beasts, Katie Melua and Paolo Nutini. From his newly completed studio in east London he now divides his time between film and TV composition, session guitar work, solo albums, and of course, his production work. And it's here we joined him to hear the story of his new studio, his serendipitous meeting with Mr Eno and what it's like touring Siberia with a coach full of free jazz musicians… The Process of Production is presented by Lawrence Diamond and Bob Matthews.
