Jason Fraley interviews Iron Maiden's iconic frontman Bruce Dickinson, who brings his solo tour to The Fillmore in Silver Spring, Maryland this Sunday night. They discuss his latest solo albums “The Mandrake Project” and “More Balls to Picasso,” as well as his favorite comic books, getting his pilot's license, launching his own beer called The Trooper, and singing the National Anthem for the Pittsburgh Steelers. However, he admits he's more of a Kansas City Chiefs fan, coining a phrase for Travis Kelce's engagement to Taylor Swift. #GridironMaiden (Theme Music: Scott Buckley's "Clarion")
Horror and hard rock have long gone hand in grimy hand, and this outing of The Peggy Mount Calamity Hour's After Dark strand harkens back to an historical moment where three chords and hairspray attempted to go mainstream. Because when the lead singer of the world's largest metal band stars in a Tuesday night BBC One drama, you know it's not long before he'll be recognised in Waitrose. Yes, the volume is turned up to eleven as the doors of 1990's The Paradise Club are booted well and truly booted open, as the world's unlikeliest brothers play host to London's least stage-ready band, who perform to unfeasibly small audiences that have never before heard any music. As connoisseurs of loud tunes and questionable television, this is of course PeggyMountPod's perfect cultural fodder... Has the BBC drama department only got one casting director for everything they make? Has the money that would normally spent on extras for the club scenes gone to PRS royalties for a soundtrack that the show's Sanatogen-necking audience might actually recognise? And how much does this podcast owe Bruce Dickinson for repeatedly howling ♫ 'TATTOO-OO-OOED MILLIONA-A-A-A-AIRE' throughout*? Press Play on a shoddily-recorded bootleg that you bought for £2 off the market, and find out... *Absolutely nothing. Blackout's already bought Tattooed Millionaire on at least five different releases, it's more than paid for. “Surround yourself with people you admire.” In this episode of Recording Studio Rockstars, I had the pleasure of talking with Brendan Duffey, a multi-Grammy-nominated mix and mastering engineer with nearly 30 years of experience. Brendan has worked with legends like Kendrick Lamar, Sheryl Crow, Milton Nascimento, and Bruce Dickinson—best known as the iconic lead singer of Iron Maiden and a legendary solo artist in his own right. Brendan brings a deep understanding of both the technical and emotional sides of music production. We talked about everything from his early days teaching audio engineering—where he learned how to explain complex concepts in simple ways—to his approach to mixing and mastering across different genres. Brendan shared what it was like to remix and master much of Bruce Dickinson's solo catalog, how he thinks about low-end in hip-hop, and why sometimes a mistake in the studio can lead to your most exciting creative breakthrough. He also opened up about how vocal production has changed over the years, moving from an auditory process to a more visual one, and why he believes simplicity, emotional connection, and knowing your tools inside and out are what really make a mix come alive. Brendan reminded me that mixing isn't just about the gear or the plugins—it's about bringing out the best in the performance and creating something that moves people. This was a killer episode with tons of great insight, whether you're just starting out or deep in your career. Get access to FREE mixing mini-course: https://MixMasterBundle.com My guest today is Brendan Duffey, an award-winning mix and mastering engineer with 21 nominations to his name. Based in Jupiter, Florida, Brendan has nearly three decades of experience delivering world-class sound for artists across genres, including Bruce Dickinson of Iron Maiden, Kendrick Lamar, Milton Nascimento, and Sheryl Crow. For 10 years, Brendan owned and operated a major recording facility in São Paulo, Brazil, before relocating to California to focus on mixing and mastering. He later moved to Jupiter in search of a better quality of life for his family. Brendan holds a B.A. in Recording Arts from CSU Chico and a Master's degree in Music Business from Berklee College of Music. Thank you to Matt Boudreau for the introduction our NAMM meetup! Send us a textIn this episode of Navigating the Customer Experience, we are joined by Peter Ryan, President and Founder of Ryan Strategic Advisory, is recognized globally as one of the foremost experts in customer experience (CX) and business process outsourcing (BPO). For over two decades, Peter has advised CX outsourcers, enterprises, governments, and associations on strategic issues like technology deployment, offshore positioning, and service delivery. He is also the publisher of the annual CX Technology and Global Services Survey, considered the most comprehensive look into the minds of enterprise CX leaders across North America, Europe, and Asia Pacific.Peter's journey into CX began in London more than 20 years ago at Data Monitor, a market analysis firm. Though unfamiliar with CRM at the time, his curiosity and willingness to learn launched a career that has since evolved into running his own advisory business for nearly a decade. Today, he is a trusted voice in the industry, helping organizations align technology, outsourcing, and strategy to elevate customer experience.A highlight of Peter's work is his CX Technology and Global Services Survey. Now in its 8th year, the study benchmarks enterprise priorities, investment areas, and challenges. The 2025 survey, with over 800 decision-makers, revealed three major themes:Data security, compliance, and regulation remain top concerns, with leaders prioritizing fraud prevention, cybersecurity, and privacy compliance.BPO partnerships continue to grow, proving outsourcing is now integral to CX delivery.AI fatigue is rising. While organizations remain interested, fewer leaders expect demand for AI tools to increase, instead seeking real, proven use cases.Peter also co-founded the CX Outsourcers Conference with Tracy Freeman and Mark Angus. Since 2018, it has become a global gathering of CX and outsourcing leaders, offering unfiltered dialogue and cross-industry perspectives. After stops in Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Munich, the next conference will take place in Ottawa in 2026—their first outside the U.S.Looking ahead to 2026 and beyond, Peter identifies two priorities for CX leaders:Fix declining service levels. Consumer satisfaction is hitting historic lows, with indexes in the U.S. and U.K. “plumbing new depths.” Leaders must ask why customers feel underserved and address the gaps.Fight for CX investment. Leaders must secure budgets to evolve people, processes, and technology. Relying on outdated methods won't work—organizations need continual recalibration to retain customers cost-effectively.Beyond strategy, Peter shares his personal inspirations. Two books shaped his outlook: What Does This Button Do? by Bruce Dickinson, which illustrates the power of lifelong learning and reinvention, and The Hawke Memoirs by Australian Prime Minister Bob Hawke, highlighting resilience and decisive leadership. For daily productivity, Peter relies on WhatsApp, which has become his go-to professional communication tool, far more effective than overloaded email inboxes.Currently, Peter is most excited about growing the CX Outsourcers community, creating safe spaces for executives to collaborate, share best practices, and elevate the industry without the pressure of sales. When it comes to adversity, Peter lives by the philosophy that “things can only get better” and emphasizes personal responsibility: while external factors may be uncontrollable, we remain masters of our own destiny. This episode offers a rich perspective on CX strategy, outsourcing trends, and the leadership mindset required for the years ahead.Recommended Books:What Does Th

Red and Jerry talk with Iron Maiden vocalist Bruce Dickinson about his latest release "More Balls to Picaso" and his last solo release "The Mandrake Project".
In 1994, having left Iron Maiden for a time (he rejoined in 1999), Bruce Dickinson released his second solo album, entitled Balls To Picasso. Named in honour of the cubist pioneer whose representations of spherical objects were as squares and reflected on the cover in graffiti style on a tiled bathroom wall, the album belied its irreverent title by solidifying Dickinson's reputation as a serious solo artist. His first record with collaborator Roy Z, produced by Shay Baby and recorded with Z's band Tribe Of Gypsies, it went through various iterations before its release. The original album included a number of classic tracks and live favourites from Dickinson including the singles "Tears Of The Dragon" and "Shoot All The Clowns," alongside the much-loved epic "Laughing In The Hiding Bush," which was the original title for the album.Yet despite its positive reception at the time, it never quite captured Dickinson's original vision which was even more expansive in scope and ambition. However, with the ability to revisit his solo catalog - and following on from Dickinson's hugely acclaimed album The Mandrake Project in 2024 - the brand-new part re-recorded, remixed and newly mastered version of the album, now entitled More Balls To Picasso, reimagines it as a fresh and contemporary release.Dickinson says of it, "While mixing all my catalogue into Dolby Atmos I had a nagging desire to revisit and reinvent the record. So putting more balls into 'Balls.' was a labour of love. Of course, we beefed up the guitars - courtesy of our 'Swedish shredder' Philip Naslund and we added some really beautiful work by Adassi Addasi on 'Tears.' as well. Fellow Brazilian composer Antonio Teoli added some stunning orchestral arrangements, and in a unique contribution, added indigenous instruments from the Amazon (recorded by himself when he lived there!) at the beginning of 'Gods Of War'."'Shoot All The Clowns' gets the benefit of a horn section fronted by the Berklee College of Music, and all of the record gets the benefit of the mix by Brendan Duffey, (who worked on The Mandrake Project), with notes along the way from Shay Baby, the original father of the album".Additionally, More Balls To Picasso includes two previously unreleased live in-the-studio tracks, 'Gods of War' and "Shoot All the Clowns." It will be available as a splatter vinyl double album and tri-panel digisleeve CD album.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/arroe-collins-like-it-s-live--4113802/support.
Typically, when I post the artists I have on the show, I also include the band they're in. For this episode, that's not necessary. Up first, The Metal God, Rob Halford, joins me to talk all things Judas Priest, and their upcoming tour with Alice Cooper. He talks to me about his relationship with the theatrical legend. The topic of Ozzy's passing came up. Rob said he couldn't believe it. He curled up in a ball and bawled his eyes out for hours. He shared some memories with Ozz and what he'd want everyone to do in his absence. Rob's a GREAT guy that I've had the privilege to speak with several times. He's one of my favorites for sure. Bruce Dickinson from Iron Maiden starts his solo tour today (August 22nd), so he came on to speak about fencing, the tour, and his solo career. He says the band he's playing with is solid and great to be around. He talks about playing theaters versus stadiums. Does he play new solo music for his Maiden bandmates? He answers that question, plus playing Maiden songs on the upcoming tour. He said he's playing a song they've never played live. Oh, he does answer the question about cowbell on stage....LOL Enjoy!

Brian, Blake, and Richard are back for Episode 577 of the Chasing Tone Podcast - Introducing the Quad Fusion and why Bruce Dickinson hates your concert footageBlake has celebrated another year on planet tone and the guys celebrate by discussing the various foodstuffs he consumed. Richard has received a couple of not so mysterious pedals that he is in love with and JHS have teased a new release via the medium of Riddle which he thinks he has solved...maybe. Our intrepid Portlandian reporter is also about to interview the head honcho himself from Norman's Rare Guitars and the guys are excited. Brian has a new idea for an battery powered amplifier and the guys discuss portable amplification circuits. Richard spotted a few familiar looking pedals on Gem archer of Oasis' pedalboard and the guys dissect a low resolution image. A lot of musicians turn to acting - but what about actors who turn to music - can they cut the mustard? The guys debate this and Richard makes a shock admission. Do you film the concerts you attend? The lead singer of Iron Maiden has shared some views about this and there is some interesting chat about this subject. Blake claims Richard is a monocle wearer. The triple header, Squonkulator, Creamy tones, War of the Worlds, Adam Sandler...it's all in this week's Chasing Tone! The fundraiser we mentioned:https://www.instagram.com/geardoinggood/We are on Patreon now too!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/chasingtonepodcast)Awesome Courses, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Youtube:https://www.youtube.com/@chasingtonepodcastAwesome Course, Merch and DIY mods:https://www.guitarpedalcourse.com/https://www.wamplerdiy.com/Find us at:https://www.wamplerpedals.com/https://www.instagram.com/WamplerPedals/https://www.facebook.com/groups/wamplerfanpage/Contact us at: podcast@wamplerpedals.comSupport the show
Count us in. Baby! It's something of a music-themed show today as Pete reveals he once interviewed Flea from Red Hot Chili Peppers and he had something resembling a torture rack in his dressing room. Aside from that we pour doubt on the credibility of Bruce Dickinson's polymath credentials and then get stuck into a bit of Black Sabbath. Also, have we come full circle in the "what to feed ducks" debate that's been raging around the UK for the last decade or so? This week on Dem Vinyl Boyz, we summon the galloping riffs and soaring vocals of one of the most iconic heavy metal albums of all time — Iron Maiden’s 1982 masterpiece, The Number of the Beast. This record marked a turning point for the band: it was the debut of powerhouse frontman Bruce Dickinson, and the album that would catapult Iron Maiden from underground heroes to global metal gods. Blending fierce instrumentals, dramatic storytelling, and apocalyptic themes, The Number of the Beast delivered timeless classics like “Run to the Hills,” “Hallowed Be Thy Name,” and the fiery title track “The Number of the Beast.” We dig into the controversy the album stirred with its dark imagery and biblical references, the influence it had on generations of metal bands, and how it still stands as a defining moment in the New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Whether you’re a longtime headbanger or just stepping into the Maidenverse, this vinyl is a must-have — and this episode is your gateway to understanding why The Number of the Beast remains immortal in the halls of heavy metal history. Up the irons — and spin it loud.
Music journalist Martin Popoff provides an intimate and scholarly look into the life and times of Iron Maiden. From their humble beginnings in the dingy clubs of East London to headlining arenas and festivals worldwide, the band's story is one of resilience, creativity, and unrelenting dedication to remaining prolific and vital in the present day. Dive deep into their music, stage performances, and the iconic figure of Eddie, their undead mascot. Readers will discover the stories behind all their albums-such as Killers, The Number of the Beast, and Powerslave, through to their most recent, Senjutsu (and all solo releases)-as well as the inspiring creative and commercial resurgence that the band experienced beginning with the return of Bruce Dickinson to the fold in 1999. Anchored by the author's 1995-2024 interviews with all band members, this book is framed most pertinently as an analysis of each Iron Maiden album, one per chapter, every song discussed musically and at the literary end, along with the album covers and the finer points of the recording process. All told, Hallowed by Their Name is the most voluminous and career-spanning reference-level book on Iron Maiden ever written. And with an explosion of photographic images as well, it's sure to have fans scurrying back to the sacred texts-Iron Maiden's beloved records-for additional and enriching reconsiderations of the many essential metal songs this band has given us over the years. This is a must-read for any music enthusiast, a tribute to the indomitable spirit of Iron Maiden, and a celebration of the band's enduring six-decade legacy in the realm of heavy metal. Let Us Know What You Think of the Show!Date: May 28, 2025Name of podcast: Backstage Pass RadioS8: E6: Graham Bonnet & Beth-Ami Heavenstone - The Legend and the Forever FriendSHOW SUMMARY:Rock legend Graham Bonnet and bassist/manager Beth-Ami Heavenstone invite listeners into their world for an intimate conversation about music, recovery, and what's next for the Graham Bonnet Band. Fresh from battling COVID-19, the pair reflects on the unique challenges vocalists face—a sentiment Bonnet captures perfectly when he states, "The voice is the hardest instrument to play... the guitar is easy compared to this." The conversation weaves through exciting announcements about their upcoming live DVD recorded at the historic Whiskey a Go Go, a venue deeply meaningful to both artists as their first performance space together. Fans will be thrilled to learn about the band's fourth studio album in progress, featuring a special collaboration with Iron Maiden's Bruce Dickinson. Bonnet shares his creative process, including a touching tribute song to the underappreciated guitar virtuoso Rory Gallagher, revealing the thoughtful songwriter behind the powerful voice. Some of the most compelling moments emerge when Bonnet opens up about his remarkable past—from his early connection to the Bee Gees (his cousin Trevor Gordon was originally part of the group in Australia) to his heartfelt remembrance of drummer Cozy Powell, whose 1998 passing still visibly moves him. The emotional gravity in Bonnet's voice as he recalls seeing two rainbows touch the hillside after learning of Powell's death demonstrates that behind the legendary rock persona is a deeply feeling human being who treasures these connections. Between European tour preparations, managing multiple projects, and their life together raising chickens in LA, Bonnet and Heavenstone offer a refreshingly authentic glimpse into their world. Their playful banter and surprising personal revelations—Graham's unexpected love for figure skating and Antiques Roadshow, Beth-Ami's bird watching hobby—create a warm, inviting atmosphere that makes listeners feel like they're sitting in their living room. Whether you've followed Graham's career for decades or are discovering his extraordinary voice for the first time, this conversation captures the spirit of a rock legend who remains humble, creative, and utterly passionate about music.Sponsor Link:WWW.ECOTRIC.COMWWW.SIGNAD.COMWWW.RUNWAYAUDIO.COMBackstage Pass Radio Social Media Handles:Facebook - @backstagepassradiopodcast @randyhulseymusicInstagram - @Backstagepassradio @randyhulseymusicTwitter - @backstagepassPC @rhulseymusicWebsite - backstagepassradio.com and randyhulsey.comArtist(s) Web PageCall to actionWe ask our listeners to like, share, and subscribe to the show and the artist's social media pages.
