This week on the podcast Mikki speaks to Dr Peter Brukner, one of the OGs in the low carbohydrate space. They discuss how he was influenced by Professor Tim Noakes to do something about his own health when we realised he was no longer the fit, metabolically healthy man he was, and was challenged to do something about it. His own success with improving his metabolic markers then got him interested in the wider application of the approach for fat loss, improving blood sugar control and reversing symptoms of Type 2 diabetes led Dr Brukner to broaden his practice to one that educated and informed on the power of low carbohydrate diets for chronic disease. This has lead to him authoring a book (Fat Lot of Good) and setting up a not for profit organisation (Sugar by Half) and a new diabetes reversal programme, Defeat Diabetes. Peter Brukner is a specialist sports and exercise physician whose most recent position has been Australian cricket team doctor for the past five years.Peter is the founding partner of Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne and Professor of Sports Medicine at Latrobe University. His most recent book A Fat Lot of Good was published in May 2018.Living and working in Liverpool, UK in 2012, Dr Peter says that he has a strong family history of Type 2 diabetes. Despite being borderline obese with a BMI of 30, blood tests showing he had a fatty liver, he still considered himself to be in good health, doing the right thing with eating low fat foods and exercising. It was through his long standing academic friendship with Prof Tim Noakes, that he read Gary Taube's ‘Good Calories Bad Calories' that challenged the idea of the low fat diet. Embarking on his own journey, reading and self experimentation, Dr Brukner was able to see first hand the impact of eating real food. He lost weight, more energy, mentally sharper as went from eating three meals and three snacks to two meals and a small snack of a handful of nuts. Blood tests showed that his fatty liver had resolved and was completely normal. Frustrated by the mixed messages in the public space, he wanted a platform to campaign for dietary change. He founded the not-for-profit organisation ‘Sugar By Half' as a public health campaign to promote and advocate for healthier eating by reducing sugar consumption. He authored ‘A Fat Lot of Good', a best seller book which provides an engaging and easily accessible approach to eating real food. On this episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, Randall Cooper joins me to discuss the elements of bringing a product successfully to the marketplace. Randall is an experienced Sports Physiotherapist, Founder and Managing Director of Premax, Adjunct Lecturer at the La Trobe University Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre, Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, and designer of the Cooper Knee Alignment Sleeve by Thermoskin. In this episode, we discuss: -How to asses if your product idea fulfills a niche area in the market -Why you should protect your intellectual property -How to find a distributor that’s right for your product -Unique obstacles healthcare practitioners face when launching a new product -And so much more! Once an idea is reasonably developed, Randall encourages entrepreneurs to solicit feedback on their product. He stresses, “Most of the time, that feedback you get from other people is extremely refreshing and helps solidify whether your idea is good or not.” One of the biggest challenges physical therapists face is that they can rely on their stable career paths and potentially not take advantage of more risky but fruitful opportunities. Randall believes that, “The entrepreneurs who have nothing to fall back on, they grit down and they get through those tough times and they get to that next level because they have to.” Before pursuing a venture, it is important to understand your underlying inspiration. From Randall’s experience, “The primary motivation has to be that you're changing things for the better and not that you want to be a millionaire and retire to the Bahamas.” For more information on Randall: Randall is an experienced Sports Physiotherapist, Founder and Managing Director of Premax, Adjunct Lecturer at the La Trobe University Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre, Fellow of the Australian College of Physiotherapists, and designer of the Cooper Knee Alignment Sleeve by Thermoskin.
