Have you been trying to figure out how to get back into an exercise routine post surgery and are feeling overwhelmed? Today we are joined by exercise expert, Dr. Renee Rogers to discuss what types of exercise are best post surgery and how to increase your lean muscle tissue that may have been lost after surgery. Dr. Rogers is a wealth of information and she provides excellent clarity about how to determine the best physical activity for yourself, and how to create a realistic plan for your new way of life. Tune in to learn more and get some great tips!  IN THIS EPISODE: [1:34] Dr. Rogers introduces herself and provides her background.  [4:28] How can we quiet the media noise that's in front of us every day? [8:51] Dr. Rogers discusses how obesity medications work and why there is a push for movement right now [17:18] When you lose the lean tissue, especially if it's muscle, can we gain any of that back?  [25:43] How can you determine what exercise or physical activity is best for you? [31:55] Where do you start when it comes to movement to maintain what strength you have? [37:24] If someone is considering having bariatric surgery or onboarding an anti obesity medication, where should they start when it comes to being active?  [41:07] Dr. Roger's final thoughts  KEY TAKEAWAYS: When you are carrying excess body weight, you need more lean tissue to maintain your body size, to hold up your frame, to walk every day, to feel and function. Lean tissue includes bone, muscle, organs, tendons, connective tissue, when you shed some adiposity, you will naturally shed some lean tissue also.  Every bariatric patient goes into their post op life in a completely different sport physiologically. One person's movement level will be different than someone else's so don't try to follow a one size fits all program. When getting started, tune in to what your body really needs, and what feels good, then build from that. Decide what is one thing this week that you can really prioritize in terms of new behaviors that you need to start doing, start with those and take it from there. Why are we so drawn to the promise of quick fixes in our fitness goals, and why do they often lead to disappointment? In this episode, host Gabe Howard sits down with Dr. Cedric Bryant, CEO of the American Council on Exercise, to explore the psychological and social factors behind our attraction to these easy solutions. They discuss the evolving science of exercise, the importance of integrating physical and mental health, and practical strategies to help you stay on track with realistic, sustainable fitness goals. Tune in to learn how to spot the fads and focus on what really works for your long-term health. “So rather than focusing on running a four-minute mile or being able to bench press a certain weight, start with goals that are just about, kind of to borrow the old Nike, just doing it. You start with the process of, OK, I'm going to do some form of exercise or physical activity three times a week for 20 minutes a day. And just use that. Don't think about what's going to be the resultant outcome of that, and once you start to master those, then you can start shifting toward setting some performance or outcome-based goals for yourself, because then you're going to have a better framework of what is truly achievable for you.” ~Dr. Cedric Bryant To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit our official episode page. Our guest, Cedric X. Bryant, Ph.D., FACSM, is the Chief Executive Officer at the American Council on Exercise (ACE). On a typical day, he collaborates with various partners such as the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and National Academies of Science, Engineering and Medicine to champion increased physical activity based on science and evidence-based practices. When sharing about physical activity Cedric often says, “Some activity is better than none, and more is better than some! Every little bit counts.”  Cedric has more than 35 years in the health and fitness industry and has authored more than 300 articles and co-authored or edited more than 40 books. He earned both his doctorate in physiology and master's degree in exercise science from Pennsylvania State University, where he received Pennsylvania State University's Distinguished Alumni Award, the highest honor presented to its alumni.  Our host, Gabe Howard, is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. Eat less. How many times have you seen and heard that message? As a generation that grew up steeped in diet culture, most of us have it deeply internalized…often to our detriment. Underfueling among active women is extremely common and puts us at risk for low energy availability (LEA), which can lead to relative energy deficiency in sport (RED-S), a condition that not only hurts performance, but also can cause irreparable negative health consequences. LEA/RED-S can be especially difficult to spot in midlife women because the symptoms mirror those we experience during perimenopause. We dig into all of it this week to help you avoid LEA/RED-S and get the fuel you need to feel and perform your best with Heidi Skolnik, MS, CDN, FACSM of Nutrition Conditioning, LLC, and author of The Athlete Triad Playbook. Further into the discussion, Dr Rob shares valuable tips about: types of exercise that is most beneficial inflammation-how exercise fights this statistics from his own research on how powerful the effect of exercise is to improve recovery (50-60% increase on survival) t-cells, myocoids, and other cells that get activated when we exercise the correlation of survival and muscle mass (not fat mass) ideal number of repetitions for exercise how to reach out to an exercise specialist and a lot more   These all might sound a bit scientific but Dr Rob will elaborate on these things to make it easy for everyone to understand. The ALL ME® Podcast Energy Drinks: How Significant is the Risk- Dr. John Higgins At some point in your day, have you had that feeling like you need a pick me up to get through the day. Some people start every morning with a cup of coffee. Others feel the need to grab an energy drink to get a boost to get through their diet. BUT, could that energy drink be causing more damage to your body, especially your heart, than you realize. In 2020, the energy drink industry generated $57 million dollars in revenue and that is expected to grow by 7-9% in the next 4-5 years. We are now seeing middle school children consuming energy drinks in addition to young athletes using these prior to high intensity exercise which can pose a significant risk.   During our interview we talk about the potential risk of mixing caffeine, taurine, and other stimulants like guarana seed extract and panax ginseng. These ingredients also see an increase in utilization when combined with glucose (i.e. sugar). In this episode, we speak with Dr. John Higgins, Sports Cardiologist, to discuss his research outcomes on the impact energy drinks have on the cardiovascular system in healthy individuals. Dr. Higgins will discuss what ingredients are in these drinks, which ones may be posing a risk, what did his research determine on cardiovascular health and would he recommend consumers drink them?
