Today's chat is with one of my friends and colleagues, Professor Peter Brukner and the following paragraph (which summarises our conversation) is from a recent article in 'The Australian' newspaper by journalist Natasha Robinson.. “The diet wars have been raging in Australia for decades. Experts are pitted against one another in acrimonious battles over what the evidence really says on low carb, meat, saturated fat, plant-based foods, and myriad other points of dietary contention. But now, consensus has emerged on one thing: low-carb is an effective approach to maximise metabolic health. And with the majority of Australians metabolically unhealthy, is it an approach that everyone should follow? In a highly significant move, the nation's peak body for diabetes, Diabetes Australia, has entered a partnership with prominent low-carb diet proponent Dr Peter Bruner to promote his low-carb program to its members via Brukner's charity Defeat Diabetes. Brukner reversed his own diabetes and lost a substantial amount of weight through the approach.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

His own success with improving his metabolic markers then got him interested in the wider application of the approach for fat loss, improving blood sugar control and reversing symptoms of Type 2 diabetes led Dr Brukner to broaden his practice to one that educated and informed on the power of low carbohydrate diets for chronic disease. This has lead to him authoring a book (Fat Lot of Good) and setting up a not for profit organisation (Sugar by Half) and a new diabetes reversal programme, Defeat Diabetes. Peter Brukner is a specialist sports and exercise physician whose most recent position has been Australian cricket team doctor for the past five years.Peter is the founding partner of Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne and Professor of Sports Medicine at Latrobe University. The CSIRO and Australian Sports Commission have released a report on the mistrust among elite athletes about increasingly detailed data collection.  The international sport data analytics market is worth $2.6 billion, raising the question of who owns the data? Dr Peter Brukner, Professor of Sports Medicine at La Trobe University in Melbourne and former Australian Cricket team doctor told Jo McManus that there is no answer to that question. "There is a massive amount of data being collected in all types of sports and that's just blown out in the last 10 years or so," he told Jo. "The issue arises of who owns that data - if you're a professional football club and want to sell a player, who has access to that data? The potential purchaser? The player? It is an absolute minefield." See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Read Peter's recent article: https://www.canberratimes.com.au/story/7338616/its-well-past-time-to-tackle-australias-other-epidemic/ Dr. Peter Brukner OAM is the founder of Defeat Diabetes and not-for-profit SugarByHalf. Peter is currently Professor of Sports Medicine at La Trobe University, Victoria. "I am a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician, and Professor of Sports Medicine at La Trobe University in Melbourne. I have been working with athletes of all sizes, shapes and abilities for 40 years. In that time, I have worked in AFL clubs, Australian Olympic teams, the Socceroos and the Aussie cricket team as well as a stint in the UK as Head of Sports Medicine at Liverpool Football Club. "So why am I here talking to you about diabetes? My father had Type 2 diabetes and I watched as he progressively suffered many of the typical complications. I was determined not to go down the same path. A few years ago, despite eating a so-called healthy low fat diet and exercising regularly, I was significantly overweight, with high triglyceride and insulin levels as well as suffering from a fatty liver. In other words I was pre-diabetic. I decided to try a low carb diet, reducing my intake of sugar and starches. After 3 months the results were incredible. I reversed all my metabolic abnormalities as well as losing 13 kg. I have maintained that way of eating ever since, every blood test comes back absolutely normal. I have no doubt that if I had not made those changes by now I would have Type 2 diabetes. As a result of my own experience and years of intense study of the relationship between diet and metabolic disease, I am now passionate about the real-food way of eating that focuses on healthy proteins and fats, while limiting sugars and processed foods." His most recent book A Fat Lot of Good was published in May 2018.Living and working in Liverpool, UK in 2012, Dr Peter says that he has a strong family history of Type 2 diabetes. Despite being borderline obese with a BMI of 30, blood tests showing he had a fatty liver, he still considered himself to be in good health, doing the right thing with eating low fat foods and exercising. It was through his long standing academic friendship with Prof Tim Noakes, that he read Gary Taube's ‘Good Calories Bad Calories' that challenged the idea of the low fat diet. Embarking on his own journey, reading and self experimentation, Dr Brukner was able to see first hand the impact of eating real food. He lost weight, more energy, mentally sharper as went from eating three meals and three snacks to two meals and a small snack of a handful of nuts. Blood tests showed that his fatty liver had resolved and was completely normal. Frustrated by the mixed messages in the public space, he wanted a platform to campaign for dietary change. He founded the not-for-profit organisation ‘Sugar By Half' as a public health campaign to promote and advocate for healthier eating by reducing sugar consumption. He authored ‘A Fat Lot of Good', a best seller book which provides an engaging and easily accessible approach to eating real food.
