Building on from our previous discussions on optimal fuelling for endurance exercise, in this episode we go deep into the details of why carbohydrates are the rocket fuel for our bodies, and how we can take advantage of metabolic agility and different fuel strategies to unlock performance gains. To do this, we are joined by Dr Jamie Whitfield, a postdoctoral researcher in exercise nutrition and an expert in muscle physiology and metabolism. We explore how your body ‘chooses' whether to burn fats or carbs as fuel and which carbs it prioritizes as we change our intensity and diet. We discuss whether fasting or feasting before exercise is beneficial, and we learn whether ketogenic diets hinder or enhance exercise performance.SHOW NOTES:Jamie's X account: @jwhitfieJamie's page at the ACUThe article by Jamie and a former guest, Prof Louise Burke, responding to Prof Tim Noakes on Keto diets and performance. Professor Tim Noakes' presentation at the BizNews Conference in March detailed the failures of medical science and the imitation scientists who fervently serve at the behest of "The Science". Noakes' grasp of the complexities of the ongoing yet unseen pandemics of diabetes and obesity exemplified a perfect marriage between incontrovertible comprehension and the kind of simplicity only critical thought and accuracy could inform. Noakes also shared his unfiltered and uniquely qualified views on the parallels between the false COVID narrative and mainstream media's rejection and suppression of evidence refuting previously untouchable dictums. The combination of higher-order thinking questions posed by delegates and Noakes' discerning and informative responses prompted a profoundly valuable discussion. Learn more about your ad choices. Jayne Bullen heads up not one, but three organisations that are bringing about profound change in the world. In conversation with Nutritionist and podcast host, Claire McDonnell Liu, we chat about:- Becoming the first Noakes Foundation employee, founding Eat Better South Africa and the Nutrition Network. How the small but passionate team created a worldwide training platform and community or kinship as Jayne refers to their incredible network The rampant childhood conditions Jayne sees that are linked to poor metabolic health: obesity; Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease; Mental Ill Health such as anxiety, depression, ODD, ADD. The importance of kindness and kinship in educating children to make great food choices - without isolating them Shocking levels of obesity in South Africa and the power of women to cascade food changes across communities The tragedy of our times that medical professionals have been doing what they believe to be right - but unfortunately it does not work Jayne's own PCOS diagnosis, insulin resistance, and her motivation Jayne on Prof Tim Noakes “he's an extraordinarily exceptional human being” and how he reversed his Type 2 Diabetes with Low carb or Banting nutrition, to avoid the same fate as his father. The mind body medicine practices that Jayne has found to be profoundly impactful for her own health - with breath, mindfulness and meditation at their core. The groups that she runs, that are available to support others. Her view that trauma can be a major trigger in autoimmune conditions such as Type 1 Diabetes Cognitive behavioural change in children over 2 years - with simple, affordable and scalable food changes Eat Better - it doesn't have to be perfect, we don't have to give up everything - simple changes make huge impacts on health Their new resources to help us with food addiction, emotional eating and changing lifelong food habits Jayne's go to family resources around resilience and the simple actions that family's can take today for their wellbeing. ** Support us by subscribing! It has been many years since SA's globally respected sports and nutrition scientist Prof Tim Noakes engaged at any length with a South African journalist. So this interview with BizNews editor Alec Hogg is a rare treat for Noakes's legion of fans, millions of whom credit their improved health to his research into and promotion of the Low Carb High Fat diet, or Banting. Mercilessly attacked in his homeland by the authorities and sectors of the media because he questioned the popular narrative on diet (and Big Pharma), Noakes enjoys huge respect globally, and among the general public. Especially so for his work on using the LCHF diet to counter diabetes, the modern epidemic. This in-depth, highly personal discussion explores what motivated the free-thinking academic turned prodigious author to turn his back on what made him the poster boy for an entire industry - similtaneously abandoning his favoured status with the establishment. Prof Noakes's story is an inspiration for everyone who believes there is always a better way. It also reminds us that popularly held beliefs, often those of which we are most fond, require constant challenging for mankind to continue moving ahead. Because today's conventional wisdom is often tomorrow's misguided ignorance.
Dr. Tim Noakes is a South African scientist and an emeritus professor in the Division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town. He is also a member of the National Research Foundation (South Africa), which lists him as one of their highest-rated members. He has run more than 70 marathons and ultramarathons and is the author of several books on exercise and diet. He is known for his work in sports science and for his support of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat (LCHF) diet, as set out in his books The Real Meal Revolution and Lore of Nutrition: Challenging Conventional Dietary Beliefs. Noakes is an advocate of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, often referred to in South Africa as the "Noakes" or "Banting" diet. Noakes has characterized mainstream dietary advice as "genocide". In February 2014 a registered dietician complained to the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) that Noakes tweeted to a mother that she should wean her baby onto low-carbohydrate, high-fat foods, which he described as real foods. The HPCSA held a hearing about the allegation against Noakes over the next few years. Controversially, on 28 October 2016, the HPSCA incorrectly released a statement announcing that Noakes had been found guilty of misconduct. In a second press release issued over three hours later, the HPSCA apologized for the mistake. Noakes was cleared of misconduct in April 2017. The HPSCA lost its appeal in June 2018. Noakes co-wrote the 2017 book Lore of Nutrition with journalist Marika Sboros. In it, Noakes describes his Damascene conversion to low-carbohydrate dieting, explores how the lipid hypothesis is the "biggest mistake in modern medicine" and details his struggles with the medical establishment. Noakes has written several books detailing his research in sports science and nutrition. A selected bibliography is given below. Lore of Running (1986) Running Injuries: How to Prevent and Overcome Them (1990) Bob Woolmer's Art and Science of Cricket (2008) Challenging Beliefs: Memoirs of a Career (2012) Waterlogged: The Serious Problem of Overhydration in Endurance Sports (2012) The Real Meal Revolution (2014) Raising Superheroes (2015) Lore of Nutrition: Challenging Conventional Dietary Beliefs, with Marika Sboros (2017) Real Food On Trial: How the diet dictators tried to destroy a top scientist, with Marika Sboros (2019) Today's Episode Dr. Noakes shares his Personal/Professional Story We talk about the Banting Diet Changing one person, one meal at a time Why we need to work on changing doctors Dr. Noakes discusses his legal battle We discuss how research can be biased and manipulated Food Addiction as a legitimate diagnosis How to find accurate information Nutritional science and why it needs to change He answers our question about Volume addiction Signature Question FOLLOW DR. Enjoy another one of my most popular podcast chats from The Health Evolution Podcast! "It is completely unethical for any medical doctor or any dietitian to tell a patient to eat less saturated fat." There is a big message in this for you if you are a medical doctor, Dietitian or anyone advising people on what to eat. And this is not just a blanket statement. Prof Noakes goes through why this is the case. I was super nervous before chatting to Prof Noakes. Afterall, how often do you get the chance to talk to and thank your hero? But instantly his kindness put me at ease, and we spent almost an hour together talking about this mans legacy. He shared where he is now after the horrendous 4 years of being bullied, tormented, then put on trial. You will be appalled at the way he was treated, and if it wasn't for his wife.. well you listen for yourself. Thankfully he was exonerated, and so was the low carb diet. If there is one of my podcasts that is a must listen, this is the one. Prof Noakes studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT), obtaining a MBChB degree and an MD and DSc (Med) in Exercise Science. The latter two are now also published overseas. In 2014 he co-wrote Always Believe in Magic, with Kevin Musikanth and Jonathan Kaplan, which is the story of the UCT Ikey Tigers journey to winning the 2014 Varsity Cup. The Banting Pocket Guide was published in 2017, co-authored with Bernadine Douglas and Bridgette Allan and most recently he has co-authored Lore of Nutrition with Marika Sboros. He is highly acclaimed in his field and, at age 70, is still physically active, taking part in races up to 21kms. The Noakes Foundation The Noakes Foundation is a Public Benefit Organization founded for public benefit which aims to advance medical science's understanding of the benefits of a low-carbohydrate healthy high fat (LCHF) diet by providing evidence-based information on optimum nutrition. The Foundation's key goal is to change the way South Africa eats because the epidemics of obesity and type 2 diabetes are set to cripple national healthcare within the next 10 years. The Foundation purely relies on funding to carry out this mandate, visit our website to find out how you can help: www.thenoakesfoundation.org/donate Eat Better South Africa! The Noakes Foundation soon realised that the poorest communities around South Africa, whose diets mainly consist of maize and maize products, are unaware of the dangers of excessive sugar and carbohydrate consumption. This has resulted in an unprecedented increase in cases of obesity, type 2 diabetes, and hypertension. Thus the Noakes Foundation team established Eat Better South Africa! (EBSA) - the community outreach branch of The Foundation. EBSA's goal is to educate under resourced communities about good nutrition and to provide them with the knowledge and the tools to make healthy and affordable food choices. The Nutrition Network The Nutrition Network is an education, connection and learning platform founded by The Noakes Foundation in partnership with an esteemed team of doctors and scientists. For many of our guests, Prof Noakes has been their “One”, with his publication ‘Real Meal Revolution' starting many on their journey of low carbohydrate way of eating. However, it hasn't been without its challenges, and notably, he was charged by the Health Professions Council of South Africa for some advice on Twitter provided to a mother who was weaning her baby. Those charges have since been dismissed, so now through the Nutrition Network, The Noakes Foundation and Eat Better South Africa he is educating and advocating for change. Quotes by Doug Reynolds “I used to feel like I was exquisitely fit.” “...that was Tim Noakes fault. As you know, Tim talked about how important carbohydrates were and this whole concept of carb loading before the race.” “I was literally poisoning myself with excessive carbohydrates.” “I remember we moved to a new place and I looked in the mirror and I thought ‘this mirror is bent because I don't look like that'. I went outside and cooked it on the fire and came back in and not only was there all this fat among the meat, which was absolutely unknown for me, but all this fat sloshing around on the bottom of the plate. I started giggling and was like ‘am I going to seriously eat this thing?” “I got like three quarters of the way through it. And I was like, wow, this actually tastes really good. Because now the minute the fats back in, you know, in the equation, suddenly everything tastes so much better. ” “How is it possible? I was 52 years old. Prof Tim Noakes is a South African scientist and former Emeritus professor in division of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine at the University of Cape Town. As one of the very highest rated members of the National Research Foundation, it would make sense to listen to what he thinks about sports nutrition right? Noakes is a big supporter of a low-carbohydrate, high-fat diet, writing books called the Real Meal Revolution and Lore of Nutrition and has been cited more than 21,000 times! In this podcast we chat about the appeal of ultramarathon running (yes, really), fatigue as an emotion rather than a physical state, the lipid hypothesis being "the biggest mistake in medicine" and a topic very close to Tim's heart; the Noakes Foundation. Enjoy!
Welcome to Protecting Your Nest with Dr. Tony Hampton. Prof. Tim Noakes was introduced to the Low Carb/High Fat in 2010. Two years later, as a result of his public support for this dietary approach, he was the subject of a misconduct inquiry by the Health Professions Council of South Africa. The subsequent hearing ultimately culminated in a ‘not guilty’ verdict for Dr. Noakes in 2017. Today, he is considered one of the top five most influential scientists in the world. He is an author, scientist, and has had a massive impact on the global medical community. In their discussion, Drs. Tony and Tim discuss the history of the nutritional deterioration of the modern diet, the historical and evolutionary role/place of meat and vegetables in the human diet, how the average person living today can best assess the value of a given dietary approach for their personal health, the differences in gorilla, chimpanzee, and human digestion as well as diet, the dramatic rise of carbohydrates in the human diet in recent times (especially since 1977), and how added sugar and high-fructose corn syrup came to be so prominent in the modern diet. Additionally, Prof. Noakes discusses his own personal dietary journey from childhood to the present, how to successfully transition from the standard modern diet to a low carb diet as a diabetic, the evolutionary perspective on why polyunsaturated fats are so harmful to human health, several studies showing the superiority of dietary saturated fat, the idea of eating a ‘balanced diet,’ how familial and cultural cooking traditions are important for human health, and gaining muscle mass on a Low Carb diet. Dr Peter Brukner OAM is a specialist sports and exercise physician whose most recent position has been Australian cricket team doctor from 2012-17. Peter is the founding partner of Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre in Melbourne and Professor of Sports Medicine at LaTrobe University. A founding Executive Member of the Australasian College of Sports Physicians, he served two terms as President and played a key role in establishing sports medicine as a medical specialty in Australia. Peter is the co-author of the widely used text book Clinical Sports Medicine and has been team physician for professional football clubs as well as national athletics, swimming, soccer and men's hockey teams including Olympic and Commonwealth Games. Peter was the Socceroos Team Doctor at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa and subsequently became Head of Sports Medicine and Sports Science at Liverpool Football Club. He is the co-founder of the public health campaign SugarByHalf and is committed to the challenge of improving the nation's health with improved diet and increased physical activity. His most recent book A Fat Lot of Good was published in May 2018.Living and working in Liverpool, UK in 2012, Dr Peter says that he has a strong family history of Type 2 diabetes. Despite being borderline obese with a BMI of 30, blood tests showing he had a fatty liver, he still considered himself to be in good health, doing the right thing with eating low fat foods and exercising. It was through his long standing academic friendship with Prof Tim Noakes, that he read Gary Taube's ‘Good Calories Bad Calories' that challenged the idea of the low fat diet. Embarking on his own journey, reading and self experimentation, Dr Brukner was able to see first hand the impact of eating real food. He lost weight, more energy, mentally sharper as went from eating three meals and three snacks to two meals and a small snack of a handful of nuts. Blood tests showed that his fatty liver had resolved and was completely normal. Frustrated by the mixed messages in the public space, he wanted a platform to campaign for dietary change. He founded the not-for-profit organisation ‘Sugar By Half' as a public health campaign to promote and advocate for healthier eating by reducing sugar consumption. He authored ‘A Fat Lot of Good', a best seller book which provides an engaging and easily accessible approach to eating real food. “Your body will argue that there is no justifiable reason to continue. Your only recourse is to call on your spirit, which fortunately functions independently of logic.” ― Timothy Noakes, Lore of RunningFrom Tim's Twitter bio: "Author, Emeritus Professor, runner, LCHF/Banting/CrossFit proponent. Professor Tim Noakes, one of the most well known and well-respected South Africans in the global medical scientific community, challenged the current dietary guidelines and faced extreme opposition that led to a 4 year court battle. Prof Noakes has published more than 750 scientific books and articles. He has been cited more than 19,000 times in scientific literature and has an H-index of 71. He has won numerous awards over the years and made himself available on many editorial boards. In this episode, you'll hear from him and why he went from decades of promoting high carb diet for athletes to a Low Carb/High Fat diet, both risking his career and legacy. We dive right into the tweet that nearly had his career destroyed and the court battle that changed history forever. The conversion only fires up from there. Nutrition is Prof Noakes #1 focus, and he explains why sugar and carbs will destroy our cells, pancreas, liver, and lives. We DO NOT need Fruits and Vegetables...WHAT?? After losing his father to type 2 diabetes, and then realizing he was on the same path, Prof Noakes began a mission to reverse his own and explains how you can also reverse diabetes in just 7 days. We can kick our body into a fat burning machine within 24 hours - but you must adhere to a very specific carbohydrate point or you will NEVER get there. We even discuss the hot topic of COVID-19 and what factor is truly killing people: inflammation. Prof Noakes studied at the University of Cape Town (UCT), obtaining a MBChB degree and an MD and DSc (Med) in Exercise Science. He is now an Emeritus Professor at UCT, following his retirement from the Research Unit of Exercise Science and Sports Medicine. We caught up with Prof. Tim Noakes again recently and after asking him to describe briefly again how he got started with LCHF and a little about his successful defence against the malicious charges brought against him by the HPSCA, the conversation turned to the subject of Poly Unsaturated Fatty Acids (PUFAs). I had recently heard a fascinating talk at the the Low Carb Denver conference by Dr. Chris Knobbe about PUFAs. He presented a compelling case that PUFAs were at the root of all metabolic disease. While I agree that they definitely seem to have a profound effect on our metabolic health, I do not agree that it is all about PUFAs and that carbohydrates do not have an influence at all. So I put this question to Prof. and a very interesting discussion ensued. It's always such a pleasure and an enlightening experience to spend time in conversation with Prof. Noakes and we look forward with great anticipation to his presentation at our upcoming LowCarbUSA® - San Diego 2020 event at the end of August which is now going to be totally virtual.

In the third part of my chat with Belinda Fettke, we get more personal. Belinda bravely shares the personal impact Gary's saga has had on herself, Gary and the family. We also talk about what Belinda believes has to happen before more widespread change will be possible. We then talk Mum to Mum about how we felt when we learnt about the perils of sugar, and the impact that has had on our kids, and how we've learnt to manage it all. Belinda talked about The Real Meal Revolutions awesome book, Raising Superheros, by Prof Tim Noakes. I couldn't find that book online, but I have purchased their next book, Super Food for Super Children. It's also from the Prof, and is a very similar book. HVMN Podcast: Evidence-based Nutrition, Fitness, & Biohacking
Even as the fear of fat declines within the public eye, you've still probably experienced disbelief & bewilderment from co-workers, friends, or family when talking about your ketogenic lifestyle. Imagine being a high-fat, low-carbohydrate proponent as an esteemed scientist nearly two decades ago. With more than 750 published scientific articles & 70 marathons under his belt, Prof Tim Noakes is well-known for his many contributions to nutrition & exercise science. At the beginning of his research career, he was an advocate for a high-carb diet, which is no surprise given the medical dogma at the time, yet Noakes completely changed his mind when he learned about the value of the high-fat diet. Not only was he an early leader in the ketogenic movement, a stance that temporarily costed him his medical license, but Noakes actually reversed his own Type 2 diabetes through a low-carb, high-fat diet. Perhaps one of the reasons he has upheld a high reputation is his continued desire to question current scientific theory, even conclusions he first helped define. Rather than turning a blind eye and staying with his preconceived notions, Noakes follows the evidence...a model we should all aspire to have. In this episode, you'll discover: Central governor theory: How does the brain directly influence physical performance output? Prof Tim Noakes put his career and his reputation on the line by saying three simple words that we infrequently hear: I Was Wrong. In the 80s and 90s, he was the preeminent authority on sports performance, and he wrote the defining book explaining the importance of a high carbohydrate diet. Fast forward 20 years, and Prof Noakes' own personal struggle with diabetes opened his eyes to the unforeseen dangers of the high carbohydrates diet. That is when he realized “I Was Wrong.” But he had no idea what was coming next. Given his position as a highly respected scientist, he was seen as a threat by the status quo in South Africa, and what ensued was a 3-year long trial intent on silencing him. Now he has committed his life to teaching the science behind low carb nutrition, how that can help athletic performance, and more importantly, how it can help improve our health. Nobody has risked more personally to proclaim this message, and that makes Prof one of the most remarkable proponents of healthy nutrition I have ever met. We have a lot to learn from Prof Noakes, and it all starts with the ability to say those simple three words: I Was Wrong. Key Takeaways: [4:44] A court attempted to use Prof Noakes as an example to take away free speech from doctors in South Africa. [10:22] Type 2 Diabetes is a chronic disease of nutrition. [16:29] The concept of hunger. [19:12] Athletes should self-experiment with a high-fat diet. [28:34] How do we break the cycle of industry-funded influence? [36:41] Social media helps to substantiate a healthy, high-fat diet. [41:17] Converting doctors is critical to promoting the low-carb diet. [47:12] Goals of the Noakes Foundation and the Eat Better South Africa campaign. Mentioned in This Episode: Dr. Bret Scher Dr. Scher on Twitter Dr. Scher on Facebook Your Best Health Ever! According to Prof Tim Noakes; a low carb, high fat diet is an essential antidote to reverse the progression of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes. Prof Noakes is a nutrition crusader who's own health journey has ignited his passion to challenge long-held beliefs tangled up in antiquated dietary guidelines. Today he joins us on FX Medicine to discuss the value and the science for why a low carb, high fat diet is crucial for insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes and how it can apply to competitive endurance athletes. Prof Noakes also discusses the dark side of being a pioneer in nutritional medicine, having been ostracised by his professional peers and faced with disciplinary action which he went on to win in a court battle that made international headlines.
