Hello and welcome to another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup! Without further ado, the news update from the week of 3 - 9 May.1) China’s Long March 5B first stage re-enters Earth’s atmosphere and (seemingly) lands in the Indian Ocean10 days or so ago, China launched a Long March 5B rocket to put into orbit the core module of the Chinese Space Station. As mentioned last week, this rocket is a beast: it weighs over 800t at lift-off, can put up to 25t of payload into LEO, and is comparable to some of the largest operational rockets at the moment. Now as there was no upper stage, the core stage delivered the Tianhe module directly to orbit, and then enters successive decaying orbits before re-entering the atmosphere. In the case of this launch, the Long March 5B splashed down in the Indian Ocean, without creating any damage.2) JZYJ Completes Hot Test of Whole EngineLaunch startup JZYJ announced on Thursday 6 May that they had conducted a hot fire test of the fully-assembled Longyun engine. The Longyun engine is a 80t thrust gas generator cycle engine which burns liquid methane and liquid oxygen, and one of the two engines designed by China launch startup Jiuzhou Yunjian, the other one being the Lingyun engine which is a 10t thrust methalox engine (and which was the first engine they developed). This is one of the first test firings of the Longyun engine, with likely many more to come to test different levels of thrust and restarting the rocket engine multiple times, two key features for any VTVL reusable rocket.3) CASSPACE announces B+ Funding RoundOn 6 May CASSPACE announced a ~200M B+ round of funding. The announcement also noted that they have raised around RMB 600M in the past year from CAS, Yuexiu Capital, Zhongxin, Hunan Aviation and Aerospace Fund (湖南航空航天基金), etc. The article mentions that CASSPACE will have their first launch in H2 2021 of a solid-fueled rocket, and that their rocket is part of the CAS’s 13th Five-Year Plan Space Science and Technology Projects. The rocket will have a payload to SSO of 1.5 tons, and has already completed a variety of tests.A lot of money being put into CASSPACE recently, and indeed, this is not the only second-tier/second-generation launch company to be having a big year. 2021 has seen Tianbing Aerospace and JZYJ also raise more money while reaching various technological milestones, while also seeing new entrants such as “Rocket Group” of Huzhou (火箭派).4) OneSpace “close to” raising a new round of funding for its Linglong solid and liquid fueled rockets, plans to IPO in 2022We heard over the past week in the Chinese media that OneSpace was close to raising new round of funding. This seems to confirm the comeback of the rocket company, which was rumored to be in dire straits after failing the orbital launch attempt of its OSM solid-fueled rocket. As reported in the DFH episode of Feb 1-7, OneSpace had successfully raised a round of funding in September 2020, and successfully performed a suborbital launch of an OS-X (6B) rocket in February 2021. The fact that they may be able to raise another round of funding a mere 7-8 months after the previous round shows the renewed attractiveness of the company. -------------------- This has been another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup. Can you imagine living without frozen pizza, potato chips, ice cream or Tennessee whiskey? Fact is, these CPG food and beverage staples and many more would likely not exist today in their current iteration if it wasn't for the innovative and inventive minds of Black Americans throughout history. Every year I grow older (and hopefully a bit wiser), I've found it increasingly important to study the American history that wasn't taught in traditional school curriculum. History is an academic subject, but the "history of history" is actually rooted deep in marketing strategy. It's critical that we all realize that before the greatest marketers sold consumer packaged goods, they sold subjective observations that eventually became objective truths. This piece of content was adapted from an article I wrote for my client OneSpace (read here - https://www.onespace.com/blog/2020/09/10-black-americans-who-have-shaped-the-cpg-industry/). It includes additional historically prominent Black Americans that impacted the CPG industry which can further your educational journey.
Hello and welcome to another episode of the Dongfang Hour China Aero/Space News Roundup! Without further ado, the news update from the week of 1 - 7 February. 1) iSpace Fails in the Second Launch of the Hyperbola-1 Chinese launch startup iSpace failed in the second launch of its Hyperbola-1 rocket earlier this week, with a Chinese language report reporting abnormalities in both the first and second stages in a launch on Monday 1 Feb. It was later pointed out that there had been apparently significant modifications to the Hyperbola-1 rocket between the first and second launch, which may have complicated the launch process. It may also have been an indication of the extent to which Chinese commercial space companies are by design nimble, needing to pivot often in order to increase their chances of survival. The launch failure is a setback for iSpace, and may create an opening for Landspace, or even Galactic Energy, to jump out in front as China’s most advanced commercial launch company. iSpace appears to still be a quite solid company, with an intact leadership team and a successful launch from 2019 under their belt. That said, the company has historically been less public about their activities than competitors such as Landspace or Expace, so it is hard to say how much trouble iSpace is or is not in following the launch failure. 2) Beijing Adds Satellite Internet to its Priorities for 2021 Actually from last week, we saw the Municipal People’s Congress of Beijing Municipality, where the city’s leaders discussed key tasks for the coming 1 year, as well as the coming 5-year plan period (2021-2025). This included many high-level targets, including 6% economic growth for the city in 2021, urban unemployment below 5%, and CPI of 3%. As reported by Chinese space industry think tank and event organizer FutureSpace, the Beijing Government’s document included emphasis on developing the digital economy, promoting high-quality development, and developing services that can be deployed across the Belt and Road. While admittedly nebulous, the inclusion of these several buzz phrases does reveal a fair amount about Beijing’s aspirations. The plans also mentioned two specific phrases related to satellite, namely developing a satellite internet industry, and accelerating development of high-end precision sensors for space/aerospace. 3) OneSpace Completes Successful Reentry Test Launch Chinese launch startup OneSpace completed a test launch of its OSX-6B on 5 February. The launch took place from Northwest China, with the test flight lasting approximately 580 seconds, reaching an altitude of 300km. Noteworthily, the rocket was called the Chongqing Liangjiang Star, an homage to the Liangjiang New Area of Chongqing. Liangjiang is a major initiative by the Chongqing Municipal Government, with significant investment going into industrial parks and other related infrastructure in Liangjiang. 4) Tianwen-1 sends back its first image of Mars We received this week the first image of Mars from Tianwen-1, a beautiful monochrome picture shot at 2.2 million km away from Mars, as the Chinese spacecraft enters its final approach. This is symbolic of Tianwen-1 entering the final phases of its trip to Mars as it gets ready to be “captured” by the Martian gravitational field. Tianwen-1 was launched on July 23 2020, in the Mars launch window of 2020 (which occurs every 26 months). It
Disclaimer initially--it’s a slow week on account of holiday. Also, happy holidays everyone! Be sure to check out our Longjiang-2 satellite image of the moon/earth that we posted on 1 October. This week's news update includes: OneSpace C-round of funding. Company announced the funding round in early-September, but did it quite quietly. We just heard about it this week. It’s a C round of an undisclosed amount, with the investors being Liangjiang Investment Fund, Zhengxuan Investment, HIT Robotics Fund, and Huijin Capital → most which are already previous investors, showing continued confidence of the core investors.- It also represents the latest example of a trend of involvement of regional and provincial governments, which we highlighted in an upcoming ESPI report (plug for ESPI report), as Liangjiang Group (两江集团)of Chongqing is an investor this round, and OneSpace has officially relocated their HQ to Chongqing. Interesting stuff.Apstar-6D reached its orbital slot this week. Satellite represents an interesting business case--large payload of interesting capacity; Ku-band HTS broadly over APAC with emphasis on mobility routes. Satellite will be operated primarily by APT Mobile Satcom of Shenzhen, but probably some cooperation from APT Satellite of Hong Kong, and by extension. It’s interesting because APSATCOM now kind of puts APT Satellite into competition with ChinaSat, even though ChinaSat owns a big piece of APT Satellite, and thus also of APSATCOM.Upcoming conferences:CCAF 2020: 19-20 OctoberChina Satellite conference 2020: 28-30 October---------------------------------------------Follow us on YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, and on our official website: https://www.dongfanghour.com/
Storytelling, Flamenco Guitar, Creative process I really enjoyed catching up with Paul George. Paul is no stranger to the Onespace community, having hosted Tijuana Cartel, at Onespace HQ Bondi with Kallidad opening the event. Paul was also part of the incredible line up in Wild Marmalade at “Earth Beats” Onespace event at The Sydney Opera House. Paul shares how he has been playing guitar since he was 11 years old, and when he was a teen he would play it every night and fall asleep with his guitar, he always knew he wanted to be a musician. He shares many of the different jobs he held, and some of them may surprise you, but they all guided him back to the path he was set to take.. Paul grew up in the Gold Coast and met Carey O'Sullivan, while at school and their friendship took them onto the path of creating, learning, and co-producing music and they went on to perform live and then tour the world. It was so nice to learn about Paul's past and how he came to come to where he is today, doing what he loves and continuing to play music and learn and grow. “Tijuana Cartel serves up a tasty mix of world music and club beats. These Gold-Coast-based our addicts are renowned for their live shows and tight production.” triple j Unearthed How you can support Tijuana Cartel to continue doing what they love, and bringing us new music, especially during these unknown times, Donate to Patreon account, follow them on social media, join a live event. https://www.patreon.com/tijuanacartel
Byron Bay singer, ukulele strummer, and drummer Bobby Alu "It's easy to be overwhelmed, I found myself getting overwhelmed in my decision-making process, I had so much different thoughts of all the scenario that could happen, so many scenarios you could dream up, infinite amounts of scenarios, for you staying in the situation, what might happen today, what might be happening, what is he thinking what is she thinking, it becomes a crowd in your head of all this stuff that's made up... it's amazing how much it becomes on piled up on top of each other. What brings me peace at times, is being insignificant. What I love about touring is getting off the bus, and there is crowds of people, and no one knows who I am, and I don't know who any of these people are. I find that really comforting, I am an insignificant speck of dust in the universe, just a second in a massive long sequence of events, get over it, that's the heart of the song. It's about finding that pathway into what moves you and being cool, and owning it, its not an easy path but its a rewarding one." Bobby Alu It was so nice to catch up with Charles Wall aka Bobby Alu. We met when Bobby was touring with OKA, and OneSpace hosted its first event with them at Petersham Town Hall, Sydney with Sacred Earth Music. We went on to host solo shows with Bobby Alu and The Palm Royale. Bobby has been surrounded by music since a young age, music is not something he had to learn how to play an instrument, how to read music, from an early age he was always having to listen and play his part in the music. Growing up on the Gold Coast, he went in search of the community and over the years he found it, in his 20's he was playing with about 12 different bands, Kooi, Cool Calm Collective, Georgia Potter, Saritah, Tijuana Cartel, OKA. Sharing a well-nurtured and lengthy musical connection with producer and multi-instrumentalist tour buddy Paulie Bromley (The Beautiful Girls, george), Alu's recorded and live presence has been boosted from a range of creative alliances. Bobby shares how he asked for something more challenging to his musical skills, and he met Xavier Rudd while playing a gig with OKA in Lismore, and he then went on to dedicate himself and his world-class percussion skills to touring internationally with Xavier Rudd for five years of his path. He went straight onto the tour bus and he shares this experience and how it was challenging and exciting. He shares how he had to make a difficult decision to end this path and shift the direction back to his musical creation and slow down. This talk is a beautiful reminder to be careful what you ask for as it may just show up and when it does you have the opportunity to be taken out of your comfort zone, and being asked to be brave and follow that inner calling, and to not be afraid to shift directions. Bobby's latest release is "FLOW" during this episode we talk about the track "DUST" you can support Bobby and download this track, and album. I have this album on rotation on my playlists, every track has so much depth to it and the lyrics sink into your subconscious. "when you think that you have had enough, you want to hold onto love.." Dust Keep the music alive and support the artists doing what they love! Bobby Alu
Pivotal is an interview-style segment that tackles topics in consumer packaged goods (CPG) and fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) from the business leaders that live it EVERY DAY! This episode, we have a candid discussion with Stephanie Leffler, CEO of OneSpace, which provides a suite of tools to help CPG brands win top position on the digital shelf. OneSpace believes that “eye level is buy level” is just as important online as it is offline by providing on-demand services for centralizing, optimizing and publishing content that wins top position on multiple online retailers. In this episode we talk about: How "COVID-19 Effect" has actually benefited the OneSpace team and with its relationships with CPG brand clients How sticky the growth in online grocery will be in the near future after COVID-19 Instacart's coming out party Why CPG brands need to be using this time to really invest in the digital channel ...and many more insightful topics! After a long career with Elsevier, Amanda Wolff is now the CMO for OneSpace, a tech startup that specializes in helping consumer packaged goods (CPG) companies improve product and content visibility on Amazon and similar online retailers. We chat about what’s happening in the CPG ecommerce space today and accelerating changes in how consumers shop for and buy these products online. In this episode, we discuss: How delivery services (e.g. Instacart) and click-n-collect capabilities are impacting fast-moving consumer goods like beverages Ways OneSpace works with clients to establish or evolve their ecommerce operations, ensuring they optimize their online content on a regular cadence Where your products sit on a “digital shelf” and their search rankings can change every day or even during a single day, requiring constant vigilance The process of optimizing product content and getting it out to retailers so it’s available for online shoppers In addition to its content distribution platform, OneSpace content creators actually develop rich product content or optimize baseline content available from manufacturers Traditional CPG content was pushed to consumers and is rather emotive and high level; however, online shoppers “pull” content using search, so content presented in search results needs to be more detailed and drive purchase Industry disruption caused with a move to sell directly to consumers online vs. going through the large retailers Much of this has been driven by industry upstarts, emerging digitally native vertical brands who use social commerce and influencers to tell their story directly to consumers and build demand outside of traditional retail channels How larger CPGs are using acquisitions to bolster their direct-to-consumer (D2C) offerings and skills Some dangers of working with large retailers, particularly Amazon, including retailer-owned white label products The importance of access to consumer data, including what they are searching for OneSpace leverages this type of search data to drive effective content creation Why optimizing your product content for voice search is now less of a concern than changes to retailer programs like Amazon Vendor Central and Seller Central How ecommerce teams in CPG companies can provide a more holistic view of the consumer for organizations which have traditionally been segmented by brand Why Amanda believes the coming year will bring more innovation with grocery and fast-moving product delivery options in North America, catching up with service levels already seen in the UK and Europe
