The Israeli government confirmed it will "remain" in the territory it has captured in Southern Syria as a permanent occupation which will likely lead to annexation. This comes after Israeli funded HTS insurgents overthrew Assad in January, interestingly in the exact same manner as they had claimed they would in a CIA document called "Bringing Arms To Bear In Syria" back in the 1980s which we covered at length back in 2018 on our channel. Christians, Sunnis and Alawites are being attacked on the regular in Syria since this takeover and bombs are dropping on central Damascus. Israel's Finance Minister Smotrich claimed months before the HTS takeover in 2024 that Israel will take over Syria. As nearly 100,000 people are killed in Gaza under the guise of attacking Hamas which has recieved arms and money from Israel and utilize tunnels Israel built in the first place, the Israeli conquest of the Middle East continues as designed. A nursery school in Lebanon was struck by an Israeli bomb which was caught on video in Tebnine, South Lebanon. This comes as Israel claims that the ceasefire they have with Lebanon does not mean they can't bomb the country. The Israeli military bombed Yemen's capital Sanaa for the second time this week as well. The Israeli government has for decades created proxies in the middle east as an "excuse" to target these countries as they brag about sending migrants to the west. Then they claim they're the only peaceful country in the region. Perhaps doing a before and after between the 1960s and now, before and after their proxy wars with countries in the region would wake some people up... Turkey is boasting about banning Israeli military from their air space while continuing massive trade deals with the country, not to mention helping HTS take over Syria. Jewish Policy Center Senior Director Shoshana Bryen hosted Professor Mark Meirowitz, a foreign policy and Turkey expert from SUNY Maritime College, for a deep dive into Ankara's growing regional role, its involvement in Syria's evolution, and its increasingly fraught relationship with Israel. With characteristic clarity and urgency, Prof. Meirowitz broke down the labyrinth of regional alliances and rivalries, calling the situation “literally mind-boggling” and comparing Syria to a “petri dish for chaos.” HTS, Al-Shara, and the Shake-up in Syria The ousting of Bashar Assad by the jihadist group Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), led by Ahmed al-Shara (also known as al-Jolani), marks a significant shift in Syria's power structure—and possibly the region's. Once associated with al-Qaeda and ISIS, al-Jolani now wears suits and promotes a veneer of moderation. “Maybe the Turks provided him with some of these outfits,” Meirowitz quipped, questioning the authenticity of his transformation. Al-Jolani was “boosted by” Turkish support, Meirowitz explained, calling him a Turkish client rather than an independent actor. HTS's limited control—bolstered by foreign fighters like Uyghurs—has led to violent, sectarian repression, particularly against Alawites, Druze, Christians, and Kurds. “We're with al-Shara, and a lot of people are depending on him,” Meirowitz said ominously. Turkey's Interests: Stabilizing Syria to Serve Domestic Needs Turkey's involvement, Meirowitz stressed, is strategic. With over 3 million Syrian refugees inside its borders, Ankara is pressuring Damascus to stabilize and repatriate them. “The Turks want them back to Syria,” he said, noting the domestic strain and political sensitivity of the refugee crisis. Turkey has walked a fine line—signing infrastructure and defense agreements with HTS-controlled Syria while avoiding giving it full military autonomy. “Turkey's position is that Al-Shara is the go-to person… Let al-Shara unify the country,” Meirowitz explained. But internal Kurdish dynamics—particularly involving PKK, now in peace talks with Erdogan's government—make full alignment with HTS and Syrian Kurds tenuous. Will Turkey's NATO Membership Complicate It All? One of the more sobering insights from Meirowitz was the hypothetical scenario of Turkey, a NATO power, declaring a no-fly zone over Syria—potentially triggering Article 5 protections if hostilities break out with Israel. “That, to me, is the number one worry… that Israel and Turkey would come to conflict,” he warned. He emphasized the ongoing “deconfliction meetings” between Israel and Turkey, and Israel and Syria—possibly triangulating with al-Jolani himself. But of all the moving parts, Meirowitz emphasized Turkey's NATO status remains a critical leverage point: “Let's be realistic here. If there was a skirmish…Article 5 could be on the table.” Humanitarian Crises and Jihadi Control: Who is Really Running Syria? The ongoing massacres of minorities, particularly the Druze in Suweida, raise urgent questions about al-Jolani's power. “Has he lost control over the jihadis in his own ranks?” Meirowitz pondered, highlighting the grim possibility of Syria spiraling toward becoming a full-blown jihadi state. “The optics are totally opposed to [the idea of moderation],” he said, noting public executions and forced beard-shaving of Druze men as disturbing parallels to Nazi visual propaganda. “Clearly, this is reprehensible. The United States isn’t going to stand for it,” he added, referring to conditional American Congressional support for lifting sanctions on Syria.  Erdogan's Domestic Calculations: Kurds, Elections, and Power Turning inward, Turkey's President Erdoğan is eyeing another term in 2028. Despite constitutional term limits, he may seek early elections or amendments—with the support of Kurdish parliamentarians. “He’s very popular in Turkey,” Meirowitz said, crediting Erdoğan's projection of Turkey as a global power broker. “Turkey's been made into a player on the world stage.” However, he noted Turkey's lira is down, inflation is high, and economic growth is tenuous beneath the surface. This tension is compounded by Erdoğan's crackdown on political opponents, including jailing rivals and invalidating degrees to prevent candidacies. The Bigger Stage: Turkey in Africa, NATO, and the UN Turkey's ambitions extend far beyond Syria. From military expansion in Africa to attempting alignment with BRICS and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, Ankara aims to diversify its global relevance. “They see themselves as undervalued,” noted Meirowitz. “It's not aggrandizement—it's coming from a feeling of being ignored.” Erdogan's call that “the world is bigger than five” is a veiled critique of the UN Security Council's permanent members—hinting at Turkey's desire for global restructuring that reflects its new stature. “They're trying to flex their muscles,” as one webinar participant insightfully noted.  Israel, Hamas, and the Limits of Pragmatism Meirowitz criticized Turkey's staunch support for Hamas and Hezbollah, calling it “a rabbit hole of disaster.” While support for Palestinian causes earns Erdogan domestic points, it's constraining Turkey's global relationships. “If everybody's a freedom fighter, that doesn't fly,” he said. At times, Israel and Turkey have found pragmatic partnership—like continued trade and oil transits during Syria's civil war—but the anti-Israel posture, sanctions, and rhetoric place those gains at risk. “We need to get together,” Meirowitz relayed from a Turkish businessman. “We like the same things… same food… same values.” Final Thoughts: Cautious Optimism, But Beware the Fault Lines In his closing remarks, Prof. Meirowitz struck a “guarded optimism” tone for Turkey's trajectory. “I believe Turkish leadership is going to give further thought to these directions,” he said, hoping Ankara will reconsider its Hamas alliance for more fruitful cooperation with Israel and the West. Bryen offered sober context: “Israel and Iran were friends once, too—until they weren't.” As Prof. Meirowitz put it, “Hamas is not a future for Turkey.” As the region’s political tectonics keep shifting, one question looms: Will Turkey's pragmatism prevail over ideology—or will ambition lead it down a path of strategic overreach? The answer, as Bryen put it, remains a moving thread.

In recent days, Syria's formerly designated terrorist group known as HTS has conducted murderous attacks against Christians and Druze communities and seems set on destroying the survivors and what remains of that long-suffering country's other minorities.  Unsurprisingly, the group's erstwhile leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, claims to oppose such crimes against humanity. He has, after all, to keep up appearances of having moderated his historic Sharia-supremacism, for which he was rewarded by President Trump with legitimacy and sanctions relief.  Israel cannot afford such illusions. She has come to the aid of her own Druze population's relatives in Syria and Christians seeking refuge in their midst. And the Israelis have threatened to destroy al-Sharaa's regime if it persists in striking them.  It's time to reconsider the support Washington has given Syria's jihadist regime and stand, instead, with our friends whom it is determined to kill.  This is Frank Gaffney.

The US has imposed sanctions on UN Human Rights Council Special Rapporteur Francesca Albanese for using her position to oppose the most thoroughly documented genocide in history. At the same time, the US has removed Syria's Al Qaeda franchise HTS from its list of designated terrorist organizations, because its leader successfully carried out the regime change in Damascus that the western empire had been chasing for years. At the same time, the Trump administration has enraged its MAGA base by concluding that Jeffrey Epstein had no client list for any kind of sexual blackmail operation and definitely committed suicide. The western empire is one nonstop insult to our intelligence. The peace advocates are terrorists, the genocide architects deserve peace prizes, the journalists are dangerous, and Epstein was just a wealthy socialite who made a few mistakes. Deux mois après la chute du régime des Assad, la vie culturelle renaît petit à petit en Syrie. Tandis que de nombreux artistes sont de retour d'exil, d'autres ne sont jamais partis. C'est le cas des femmes de la chorale Gardénia. Créé en 2016, en pleine guerre, ce groupe de chanteuses et musiciennes a un répertoire d'œuvres classiques, mais depuis peu, elles reprennent aussi des chansons des manifestations anti-régime. Depuis décembre, elles multiplient les représentations à travers tout le pays. Notre envoyée spéciale, Sophie Guignon, les a suivis de Damas à Alep.  De notre envoyée spéciale de retour d'Alep, À Damas, tout juste libérée du joug des Assad, les chanteuses de la première chorale féminine de Syrie sont en pleine répétition sous la direction de Safana Bakleh. Fondée en 2016, la chorale reprend des morceaux arabes classiques, mais aussi, depuis la chute du régime, des chants des manifestations de 2011. Safana Bakleh : « Avant, on devait faire attention à chaque mot. Tous les citoyens syriens ont un petit censeur qui vit en eux et on doit s'habituer à l'idée que c'est fini. Depuis décembre, on redécouvre qui on est, en tant que Syriens et en tant que musiciens. »Une note d'espoir que les musiciennes entendent diffuser aux quatre coins du pays. Quelques jours plus tard, à l'aube, nous retrouvons Safana Bakleh et ses chanteuses. Elles prennent le bus direction Alep pour un concert : « Les provinces ont besoin d'avoir accès à la culture, je suis enthousiaste, on part à l'aventure ! »Une aventure à travers un pays en ruines. Pendant 350 kilomètres, le bus longe la Ghouta orientale, Homs, Hama… des villes défigurées par la guerre : « Les habitants ne sont toujours pas rentrés chez eux, les maisons sont détruites. »Chanter la liberté dans les ruines Dans le bus, les musiciennes issues de toutes les confessions continuent à célébrer la vie malgré tout en dansant sur leurs tubes préférés. À 24 ans, Yara Shasha et Ghinwa Salibi, s'inquiètent pour l'avenir des femmes dans la Syrie du HTS, le groupe islamiste au pouvoir. « Il y a de la peur, de l'anxiété, de l'appréhension sur les décisions, sur tout ce qui se passe », se confie Yara Shasha.Pour Ghinwa Salibi : « Mais c'est notre responsabilité, nous les femmes syriennes. Si on sent que quelque chose va nous être imposé qui ne nous ressemble pas, il faut faire entendre notre voix. »Cinq heures plus tard, arrivée à Alep. Au cœur de l'une des plus vieilles villes du monde, pilonnée par l'ancien régime et son allié russe. La chorale redonne vie à un caravansérail entouré de ruines en entonnant les hymnes de la révolution syrienne. Ému, le public de ce spectacle gratuit connaît par cœur les paroles qu'il était interdit de prononcer il y a deux mois encore. « Chaque chanson fait appel à un sentiment que nous avons traversé où que l'on ressent maintenant, la peine d'avant et la joie d'aujourd'hui. Là, l'avenir est entre les mains de la nouvelle génération. », raconte une femme du public. Une jeune génération qui compte bien défendre ses libertés dans la nouvelle Syrie.

At the end of 2024, over thirteen years since the onset of Syria's protracted civil war, the country's political landscape dramatically shifted when a rebel coalition toppled the government of President Bashar al-Assad. Religious freedom conditions had suffered over the course of the civil war under a variety of state and nonstate actors. Now, in the months since the fall of the Assad regime, freedom of religion or belief faces ongoing nationwide challenges as Damascus continues its political transition under members of U.S.-designated terrorist organization HTS, itself a violator of religious freedom. Meanwhile, Turkey's military strikes and support for Islamist militias pose additional threats to diverse religious communities in the north and east. Last week's announcement by President Donald Trump on lifting US sanctions on Syria seemed to have a refreshing effect for a country that has been reeling from political divisions and economic turmoil. This week, the European Union followed, lifting all economic restrictions in a major diplomatic shift aimed at supporting Syria's reconstruction and fragile peace. The news has been accompanied by more breakthroughs: the World Bank cleared Syria's $15.5 million debt, paid off by Saudi Arabia and Qatar. On the ground, the interim government led by President Ahmed Al Shara, a former HTS leader, is scrambling to unify rebel factions, “eradicate” remnants of ISIS, and bring the country under one flag. The challenges are far from over. Sectarian violence continues to plague minority communities, some Kurdish groups are demanding autonomy, and Israeli airstrikes persist along the southern border. Al Shara, once designated a terrorist by the West, is now lobbying for international legitimacy. So what does the lifting of sanctions really mean? And can Syria be unified? Fire crews arrived at 2:08 a.m. to find flames in the attic. While battling the blaze, the roof collapsed, injuring a firefighter who was treated and released for non-life-threatening injuries. The family safely evacuated after spotting the fire, and the Red Cross is assisting them. Firefighters controlled the blaze by 2:30 a.m., using multiple units to prevent further damage. Officials stress the importance of fire escape plans and offer community education resources for safety. STORY 2: Gwinnett police launch summer public safety initiative The Gwinnett County Police Department launched a summer safety initiative on May 20 to boost officer visibility, reduce crime, and enhance community engagement. Key efforts include increased patrols in high-traffic areas like malls and parks, daily crime suppression operations, and visible cruise lights on patrol cars. A major focus is community engagement through weekly Chief’s Walks, where residents can meet police leaders, share feedback, and build trust. The initiative aims to ensure a safe, proactive summer while fostering stronger relationships between officers and the community. STORY 3: Gwinnett celebrates grand re-opening of homeless services center and shelter Gwinnett County celebrated the reopening of an expanded homeless outreach center in Norcross, operated by the Latin American Association (LAA) and HTS. Originally opened in 2021 but closed due to flood damage, the center now offers comprehensive services, including a youth drop-in center, a shelter for young mothers, food, clothing, and hygiene facilities. Staff, many with lived homelessness experience, provide case management, housing navigation, and life skills training. The center aims to address rising homelessness, especially among working families and youth, with a focus on stabilizing lives.
