Amatérský moderátor a začínající zahrádkář Tomáš Poláček si do dalšího dílu podcastu Host Reportéra pozval skvělého zahradního architekta Ferdinanda Lefflera. S tím pak víceméně není starost, vypadá to dobře a máš pohodu.“

Maybe you're seeking answers to topics: mastering music fundamentals, mastering vs mixing, the best AI mastering, or maybe just what is mastering a song. Then check out EP 135 of the Inside The Mix podcast.Step into the studio with me, as I sit down with Baltimore's own Mat Leffler-Schulman, a mastering maestro with a knack for bringing colours to sound through his unique chromasthesia. In a symphony of advice and anecdotes, we address the myths clinging to the shadows of the mastering world, shedding a bright light on the truths behind that elusive professional polish. DIY producers take note as Matt guides us through the maze of mastering, pointing out the pitfalls to dodge and sharing the secret ingredients for a masterful mix.The harmony between artist and engineer underscores our next movement, where the feedback loop becomes our guiding melody. Here, we underscore the importance of protecting our most valuable asset: our hearing. We contemplate the shift towards softer live venues, and I share my reflections from a thought-provoking discussion with Elaine Rassnick about the nuances of headphone mastering. It's a conversation that resonates with the care and craftsmanship that goes into nurturing a sound that stays true to the artist's vision. Our final act explores the burgeoning role of AI in the music production landscape, juxtaposed with the irreplaceable human touch that a seasoned engineer like Matt brings to the table. With a backdrop of neural networks and auditory algorithms, we consider how tools like Ozone's mastering feature can serve as a complement to—not a replacement for—the experienced ear. For those intrigued by the cerebral symphony of synesthesia or the enigma of sudden skill acquisitions, this episode offers a crescendo of insight. The Hoover History held a Book Talk with Melvyn P. Leffler - Confronting Saddam Hussein: George W. Bush and the Invasion of Iraq on Friday, October 27, 2023 at 12:00 PM PT. America's decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003 was highly contentious at the time, and continues to divide opinion severely. In some ways it could be considered the most important foreign policy choice of the so-called post-Cold War era. Melvyn Leffler revisits this episode armed with a unique set of personal interviews with dozens of top officials as well as a wealth of declassified American and British documents. The new documentation is extraordinary, and Leffler vividly recaptures the emotions and anxieties that shaped the thinking of the president after the shock of 9/11 – hubris, yes, but also fear, and responsibility to protect the homeland amid uncertainty. Leffler reminds us that no one should be mistaken about Saddam Hussein's brutality, unpredictability, and intransigence, but subjects Washington's decision-making to sustained, and judicious, scrutiny. Who made the decision for war? How did the decision take shape? Why did it not turn out the way its initiators intended?  What lessons can we take from the Iraq War and its aftermath? FEATURING Melvyn P. Leffler Professor of American History Emeritus University of Virginia MODERATED BY Stephen Kotkin Kleinheinz Senior Fellow, Hoover Institution Director, Hoover History Lab

On this episode of Horns of a Dilemma, Melvyn Leffler talks about his book, Confronting Saddam Hussein: George W. Bush and the Invasion of Iraq. Leffler discusses why he decided to write a book about the invasion of Iraq and how he went about doing so. He then outlined what he learned about this period of American history and how President Bush helped to shape U.S. policy, as Washington debated whether or not to invade. He then discussed the role of fear and anxiety and how these two emotions contributed to U.S. government thinking about threats, vulnerability, and how best to manage U.S. security concerns. Finally, he touched on how his own views of the war changed while writing the book and some of the larger take-aways from this period, including the need to always challenge one's own assumptions.  This was recorded at the Clements Center for National Security at the University of Texas at Austin.

On average, adults aged 21 and older drink almost 30 gallons of beer per year in the United States. If I had to guess, I maybe drink a gallon or two, so others drink way more than 30 gallons per year to even out people like me. Since it's such a popular beverage, and more and more people avoid gluten, many people wonder, "Can you drink beer on a gluten-free diet?" In this article, I'll briefly address what gluten is and how it shows up in beer. I'll also review how you can follow a strict, gluten-free diet and still drink it now and then. Finally, I'll wrap it up with some of the best gluten-free beers to try. Of course, I'm not advocating drinking alcohol. It can lead to numerous health problems, even if you don't drink to get drunk. But I want to help people who drink responsibly and do so occasionally as part of an overall healthy diet and lifestyle. What is gluten? Gluten is a group of proteins found in certain grains, including wheat, barley, and rye.Shewry, P. R., & Halford, N. G. (2002). Cereal seed storage proteins: structures, properties and role in grain utilization. Journal of Experimental Botany, 53(370), 947-958. It's the "glue" that gives bread its chewy texture and helps it rise. In beer production, barley is a common ingredient, and hence, so is gluten. Some people react negatively to gluten. Reactions range from mild sensitivity to severe intolerance, known as Celiac Disease.Ludvigsson, J. F., Leffler, D. A., Bai, J. C., Biagi, F., Fasano, A., Green, P. H., ... & Ciacci, C. (2013). The Oslo definitions for coeliac disease and related terms. Gut, 62(1), 43-52. These reactions can lead to many problems, including digestive issues, fatigue, and even damage to the intestines, in the case of Celiac. Gluten consumption can also lead to cognitive problems. Symptoms of gluten sensitivity or allergy include: Headache Joint pain Muscle pain or twitches Numbness in limbs Chronic fatigue Foggy headedness Anemia Difficulty breathing Depression Abdominal pain Nausea Bloating and gas Diarrhea or constipation Irritable bowel syndrome Muscle wasting Weight loss Hypoglycemia Type I diabetes Psoriasis Autism Schizophrenia Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) Skin rash Rhinitis / asthma Ingrown hairs Oligo- or polymenorrhea Hallucinations Beyond the issues above, gluten may cause mental problems, including: Ataxia Appetite stimulation Brain-active exorphins Peripheral neuropathy Epilepsy General cognitive impairment Dementia Psychiatric disorders If you want to read more about these gluten-related health problems, check out my article Gluten: Health Concerns for Your Brain and Body. Gluten and Beer Most beers are brewed from barley, which is malted and fermented along with water, hops, and yeast.Bamforth, C. (2009). Beer: Tap into the Art and Science of Brewing. Oxford University Press, USA. Gluten in the barley makes its way into the final product. Some beers can contain significant amounts of gluten, especially those brewed with wheat or other high-gluten grains. While it can be challenging to quantify the exact amount of gluten in a serving of beer due to variations in brewing processes, some sources estimate it to range anywhere between 15-60 milligrams per liter.Colgrave, M. L., Goswami, H., Howitt, C. A., & Tanner, G. J. (2012). What is in a beer? Proteomic characterization and relative quantification of hordein (gluten) in beer. Journal of proteome research, 11(1), 386-396. A 12-ounce (354ml) beer serving could contain approximately 5-20 milligrams of gluten. Comparatively, a slice of wheat bread contains approximately 4.8 grams of gluten, far higher than the content in beer.Gallagher, E., Gormley, T. R., & Arendt, E. K. (2004). Recent advances in the formulation of gluten-free cereal-based products. Trends in Food Science & Technology, 15(3-4), 143-152. However,

Melvin Leffler, an eminent historian of U.S. foreign policy, joins Martin Di Caro in a conversation about Leffler's new book, "Confronting Saddam Hussein." The historian argues the Bush administration was influenced by fear, overconfidence in U.S. power, and hubris rather than outright dishonesty when it drove the country to war in 2003.

America's decision to go to war in Iraq in 2003 is arguably the most important foreign policy choice of the entire post-Cold War era. Nearly two decades after the event, it remains central to understanding current international politics and US foreign relations. In Confronting Saddam Hussein: George W. Bush and the Invasion of Iraq (Oxford UP, 2023), the eminent historian of US foreign policy Melvyn P. Leffler analyzes why the US chose war and who was most responsible for the decision. Employing a unique set of personal interviews with dozens of top officials and declassified American and British documents, Leffler vividly portrays the emotions and anxieties that shaped the thinking of the president after the shocking events of 9/11. He shows how fear, hubris, and power influenced Bush's approach to Saddam Hussein's Iraq. At the core of Leffler's account is his compelling portrait of Saddam Hussein. Rather than stressing Bush's preoccupation with promoting freedom or democracy, Leffler emphasizes Hussein's brutality, opportunism, and unpredictability and illuminates how the Iraqi dictator's record of aggression and intransigence haunted the president and influenced his calculations. Bush was not eager for war, and the decision to invade Iraq was not a fait accompli. Yet the president was convinced that only by practicing coercive diplomacy and threatening force could he alter Hussein's defiance, a view shared by British Prime Minister Tony Blair and other leaders around the world, including Hans Blix, the chief UN inspector. Throughout, Leffler highlights the harrowing anxieties surrounding the decision-making process after the devastating attack on 9/11 and explains the roles of contingency, agency, rationality, and emotion. As the book unfolds, Bush's centrality becomes more and more evident, as does the bureaucratic dysfunctionality that contributed to the disastrous occupation of Iraq. A compelling reassessment of George W. Bush's intervention in Iraq, Confronting Saddam Hussein provides a provocative reinterpretation of the most important international event of the 21st century.
