Coming & Going - A Biblical Guide for your Parenting Journey
Parenting at any stage is hard. And as parents, we want to understand our kids better. But it always seems like as soon as we get one phase of life down, they quickly move onto the next one. For the next few episodes, join Pastor Joe as he spends some time looking at parenting in each of these phases of our kids' lives and learn from some of the best! Next up, parenting elementary-age kids. The elementary years can be a bit chaotic for parents — it's a time when kids are developing their sense of the world and people. They begin to make choices, experience peer pressure, and often have an extensive sports/extra-curricular activity calendar. While this time seems so long, it goes by so fast. So, how can we, as parents, maximize this season of life with our kids and continue to foster their relationships with Jesus? In this episode, Joe sits down with Josh Miller, Woodside Lake Orion's Kids Director, to talk about how this season of parenting is one of continued growth and a wonderful opportunity to show kids the true character of God. The preschool years are tough on parents — it's a time when kids are questioning everything, forming their own opinions, and strengthening their willpower. It can sometimes feel like an exhausting stage, leaving parents wishing for the season to be over. In this episode, Joe sits down with Brittany Compton, the Director of Preschool Strategy at Orange, to talk about how this season of parenting is one of great discovery and a wonderful opportunity to teach kids the true character of God. I am so grateful to have Dr. Chinwé Williams on the Still Becoming podcast this month. Through her expertise, wisdom, and warmth Dr. Williams guides us through the topics of racial trauma, vicarious trauma, and talking to our children about racism, empathy, protests, and more. These are not one size fits all conversations, and Dr. Williams specifically addresses how these conversations will look different in Black families and white families. Dr. Williams describes parents as leaders, and leaders as learners. This is an empowering frame for parents. She guides us in how to listen to our nervous system, and ground ourselves as adults. We also get to hear some about Dr. Williams story, and one person that was part of her becoming who she is today. This conversation is rich, multi-layered, insightful, encouraging, and timely. To have an expert like Dr. Williams guide parents through these topics, how to talk to our kids, and how to listen to and care for ourselves is incredible. I learned so much from Dr. Williams, and I know you will too. This is an episode that will be passed between parents I am sure. Dr. Chinwé Williams is a Board-Certified Counselor, and owner of Meaningful Solutions Counseling & Consulting. Dr. Williams completed her master’s degree at the University of Georgia and doctorate degree at Georgia State University. She served as an Associate Professor in a graduate counseling program for nine years. Her 15 years of professional experience includes work in public school systems, university and corporate work settings. She is a published journal author and has presented at numerous conferences at the local, state, national, and international levels. She is a featured guest expert on several blogs and podcasts related to mental and emotional wellness including USA Today.com, CNET, Healthy.com, Lifezette.com, and Parent Cue . Raising daughters is amazing/overwhelming. Today we are focusing on pre-teen girls but we also touch on the general wellness that all of us mothers are trying to maintain over here. In Courtney’s experience, our girls turn a corner around first and second grade - when things aren’t just about cool tutus and everyone being friends. Courtney is really passionate about this time in life, so with her girls, she tackles 6 subjects: identity, friendship, body, emotions, and technology in a fun and interactive way. Courtney DeFeo is most known for being a factory of ideas for families. It’s her desire to lead a life that radiates God’s love in action and His grace along the way. As a former marketing professional for Chick-fil-A, Courtney has a history of creating memorable programs and ideas that motivate others to action. She is the author of In This House, We Will Giggle, creator of ABC Scripture Cards and the kindness movement Light ‘Em Up Acts. I am so happy to welcome Courtney DeFeo back to the show. Courtney is an OG Surviving Sarah guest making her first appearance on the show back on episode 18. She is such a creative entrepreneur who has a big heart for helping others. She is an author and podcast host for the Treasured Podcast which is a great resource for moms of girls. Courtney has partnered with Parent Cue from Orange to create a resource for moms and tween girls so that is the basis for our conversation today. We talk about raising tween girls, the areas in which we feel inadequate to help, and even the area that we struggled with as tweens. And since we are in the throws of the holiday season, we talk about ways to make the holidays less about what we receive and more about what we give. Courtney shares some very practical and helpful ideas to light up your community during this holiday season. Connect with Sarah: Instagram // Website Support Surviving Sarah on Pateron
