INVEST IN HER with Catherine Gray Ep. 317 Innovative Wearable Tech for Women w/ CEO of Embr Labs, Elizabeth Gazda Invest In Her host Catherine Gray talks with the CEO of Embr Labs, a Boston-based wearables company that developed the Embr Wave – a wrist-worn, personal thermostat that improves sleep, relieves anxiety and helps with hot flashes. Prior to Embr Labs, Liz was a member of several founding teams including Doni, a fintech company, and Noteflight, a music technology company and has also worked at a number of Boston's fastest growing companies, including m-Qube (acq. Verisign) and unicorn Art Technology Group (acq. Oracle). Liz began her career with Philips Consumer Electronics in the Netherlands, where she was responsible for driving innovation in several business divisions across multiple countries. www.sheangelinvestors.com https://embrlabs.com/ Follow Us On Social Facebook | Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn

Could it be that menopause is finally getting its day in the sun? On this episode of the Busine$$ of the V, Dr. Dweck and Rachel showcase the latest example of a femtech product addressing a massive, never-ending, recession-proof market opportunity. Liz Gazda, CEO of Embr Labs, is introducing us to a therapeutic device that disrupts hot flashes at the touch of a button. It's a welcome solution for menopausal women, who spend an average $2,000 per year on various treatments to ease persistent symptoms. This conversation underscores the significant loss of productivity associated with women suffering chronic menopausal issues. At what should be the peak of their careers, many are sidelined by a pain cycle with very real social and economic repercussions. The Embr Wave, however, offers a non-invasive alternative that has been a game changer already for more than 100,000 customers in 170 countries. Liz explains how the thermo-receptor technology was developed, why it differs from other wearable devices and whether we can expect to see its price point come down in the future. We also learn about the specific process through which the Embr Wave disrupts hot flashes by sending a burst of cold through neural pathways uniquely designed to block pain. It essentially breaks the cycles of anxiety and cortisol spiking that compromise sleep and otherwise slow women down. About 70% of women struggle an average of 7.4 years with untreated menopausal symptoms. It's a huge, huge market with voracious demand, no expiration date and outsized buying power. With Liz at the helm, Embr Labs is going to be one of the femtech innovators to watch in the years ahead! On September 5th, 1982 The Investor docked on a little Alaskan island called Craig. The Investor was a ship owned by skipper Mark Coulthurst. He had brought his family and a good-sized crew along for the trip. There were four young crew members on board, Mark, his pregnant wife Irene, and their two children 5-year-old Kimberly and 4-year-old John. Unfortunately on the night of September 5th somebody climbed aboard and massacred the entire family. 39 years later, this case remains unsolved and is considered Alaska's largest mass murder. We talk a LOT about women's health, menopause, and hot flashes on this show. But hot flashes happen to men too! Who knew?!Jeffrey Marchi is a San Francisco native, with a career history in computer programming & at IBM.But Jeff is on the show today because he was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2010. He had surgery and a few years later radiation because the cancer came back. In 2017, Jeff started on a medication called Lupron - which is well known for causing hot flashes. He suffered greatly with continuous hot flashes for about a year - until he found out about Depo-Provera which can greatly reduce the incidence of hot flashes for men with prostate cancer. Four years later (early 2021), he started another medication called Zytiga - as his slow-growing cancer had reoccurred. That greatly increased the number of hot flashes along with the intensity. It was in 2021 when he was also introduced to the Embr Wave device which can stop hot flashes as they occur. This has helped him greatly, and it stopped the hot flashes from being a major limitation in his life.He joins us today to talk about finding treatment as a man with a "women's" health issue, regulating body temperature with the Embr Wave, and battling prostate cancer.

This episode we talk to Sam Shames, one of the creators of Embr Wave bracelets. Embr Wave bracelet was developed to help control your body temperature by cooling or warming the sensitive skin on the inside of your wrist. That sensation on your skin triggers the nerves to send messages to your brain. The brain then balances your body temperature. We are excited to continue to find products to help midlife women.https://embrlabs.com/www.hotflashescooltopics.com

Today on Live Well Anyway, MacKenzie is chatting with Katie Duckett all about friendship, specifically as it relates to supporting a friend coming out of an abusive situation. Katie gives some great advice on keeping Jesus at the center of friendships and giving each other grace. MacKenzie shares some practical ways in which she and Katie have helped each other over the years in different seasons. MacKenzie emphasizes the difference that it made to have friends like Katie who believed her and did not make her prove anything. Katie tells about some of the warning signs she saw in MacKenzie’s life leading up to her escape and how she has changed and grown since then. They also go over having a plan of action with your support system, having friends who will hold hope, and moving forward in assurance that God will take care of you. Raising daughters is amazing/overwhelming. Today we are focusing on pre-teen girls but we also touch on the general wellness that all of us mothers are trying to maintain over here. In Courtney’s experience, our girls turn a corner around first and second grade - when things aren’t just about cool tutus and everyone being friends. Courtney is really passionate about this time in life, so with her girls, she tackles 6 subjects: identity, friendship, body, emotions, and technology in a fun and interactive way. Courtney DeFeo is most known for being a factory of ideas for families. It’s her desire to lead a life that radiates God’s love in action and His grace along the way. As a former marketing professional for Chick-fil-A, Courtney has a history of creating memorable programs and ideas that motivate others to action. She is the author of In This House, We Will Giggle, creator of ABC Scripture Cards and the kindness movement Light ‘Em Up Acts. With the legalization of cannabis expanding around the world, it’s time to have a nuanced conversation about its use during pregnancy and breastfeeding. What do we know about the health risks? Toni DeAztlan Smith went into her first birth without doing much research and naively trusting the system. After an eye-opening traumatic experience that took over 6 years to process, Toni was finally ready to take birth into her own hands and proactively turn it from something you endure to something that is empowering. Her second birth was a powerfully healing experience that culminated in a thrilling oxytocin high. Go listen. How can I talk to my kids about sexual abuse? How do I know if what I encountered is abuse? Is my church a safe place for my kids? All of these are important questions and we talk about the hard stuff today with my guest Mary DeMuth. Her best advice for us? Speak up, and persevere anyway. If you met Mary DeMuth today, her joy might confuse you. Who she has become in light of tragedy is a testimony of Jesus’s ability to transform a broken life. A child of three divorces, a victim of repeated sexual assault at five-years-old, with a father who died when she was ten, Mary wanted to end her life in her teens. In the tenth grade, she heard about Jesus, and she knew she wanted to chase after Him for the rest of her life. Thankfully, He chased her. Mary is the author of forty books, including her latest: We Too: How the Church Can Respond Redemptively to the Sexual Abuse Crisis. She has spoken around the world about God’s ability to transform a life and planted a church with her family in southern France. Her best work? Being a mom to three amazing young adults and the wife of 28 years to Patrick. She makes her home in Dallas alongside her husband, an energetic chocolate lab, and a fuzzy black cat. WHAT WE CHAT ABOUT: Mary’s history of sexual abuse and finding Christ how Mary reconciles her faith in a good God who allowed her to be abused how Mary’s experiences have affected her parenting what lead Mary to focus on the abuse happening in the church how Mary is using the stories of other survivors to help fuel her advocacy the power of sharing your story key factors of a safe church how to recognize when you’ve been abused and how to begin to heal Mary’s encouragement for survivors about the process of healing confronting your abuser educating your kids about sex and abuse what Christians can do to help bring justice for victims LINKS MENTIONED: 21 Days of Healing The Child Safeguarding Policy for Churches and MinistriesGod Made All of Me: A Book to Help Children Protect Their BodiesLifeIsBroken.com CONNECT WITH MARY: website | instagram | facebook CONNECT WITH EMILY: website | instagram | facebook | patreon EPISODE SPONSORS: Blume: get 25% off your first stick + free shipping when you visit blume.com/swp Prep Dish: get 2 weeks free when you visit prepdish.com/msw Embr Wave: get $60 off your Embr Wave bracelet when you visit embrwave.com/msw SUPPORT THE SHOW: Patreon SHARE THE STRUGGLE! Merry Christmas Tanner! Let's all go tap-dance on Em's coattails. This week we both accidentally end up in Salt Lake City, which seems to be a pretty messed up place (no offense, SLC). Em tells the story of Kay’s Cross, arguably the most haunted spot in SLC. It’s full of demons, shadow people, and an alarming amount of cult leaders. Oh, it also exploded. Meanwhile, Christine covers a different kind of horror, the murder of Franklin Bradshaw, a wealthy grandpa with a cardboard briefcase and oatmeal full of amphetamines. We also learn that Em went to modeling school and Christine…well, didn’t. And that’s why we drink! Visit http://rothys.com/drink to get the shoes you’ve been waiting for! After the heavy first half of this season, I wanted us to take a little break together and have some fun. We will be covering the volatile toy riots of the 1980s and 90s, from Cabbage Patch Kids to Tickle Me Elmo to Beanie Babies to Pokemon. Let’s take a trip down memory lane to when adults created a market for these toys out of thin air, with pointless plush selling for tens of thousands of dollars, and we’ll even hear a little from my Grannie about her personal mission to find a precious Tickle Me Elmo. I’ll explore just what it is about these fad toys that have led adults to fight each other in the aisles, to break each other’s arms, to create smuggling rings, and even commit murder, sometimes trampling the very children the toys were made for. *This episode contains graphic racism* Monsters come from the darkness, from the depth of lakes and swamps, from the shadows of forests and hills, and live too in the dark parts of all of us. However, this episode is less about Bigfoot and more about the idea of the monstrous, and how it has been used as a tool to demonize black folks since the first slave ships landed in America, both through folktales and famous works of fiction. We also explore how Darwin's theory of evolution affected white Americans and led to the actual creation of human zoos that displayed African people as both the missing link and blood-thirsty monsters. Also, check out our friend Alan Seales' podcast - The Theatre Podcast. OBSESSIONS: (05:00) Tis the season for holidays...and winter colds, meaning Lulu is obsessed with Puffs with Vicks. Alison is obsessed with Febreeze One in the new Bamboo scent. WISHLIST: (07:41) Lulu is freaking out about the Embr Wave, a personal temperature regulator. Alison wants a Peloton bike. ALISON’S 10K DAY - GETTYSBURG, PA: (11:37) Alison starts her day by renting Brasenhill mansion, and a BMW 2 Series from Turo. She came for the renactments, but they only do them in July. So Alison is going to put on her own with the help of a licensed Gettysburg guide. She recruits actors and heads to Gettysburg National Military Park equipped with Union Soldier Costumes, Confederate Soldier costumes, and prop weaponry. After the renactment, lunch for herself and her cast is on theme - biscuits and corn whiskey from Mason DIxon Distillery. Now to inject some luxe into this day - a private hot air balloon ride and a private chef.LULU’S 10K DAY - Sant Llorenç des Cardassar: (23:22) This island off the southeast coast of Spain is the location of the villa featured on the British reality show Love Island. Alison is obsessed with the show, which you know if you listened, watched, or read Episode 41. Going here would be "like me taking a vacation to heaven!" sighs Alison. Lulu buys Nest outdoor security cameras, night vision cameras, and a roving camera man, all so that Alison and Ashley can watch her there. We would have stowed away on a boat, just sayin'. She snacks on Spanish tapas prepared by her personal chef, then takes a guided tour of Cuevas del Drach. A luxury yacht for half a day, and a blowout party with a Mallorca Beats DJ all sound great, but without best friends or boys, is she really taking a Love Island vacation? I think we are still miffed she left us at home. CHARITIES: (36:52)Gettysburg FoundationFundación Allen GrahamFOLLOW US:FacebookInstagramYoutubeTwitterWebsiteApple PodcastsGoogle Podcasts
I'm super excited to publish today's founder interview. A group of curious material science students at MIT, while working on a project to help commercial buildings save on energy costs by heating people directly, developed a very low-powered thermal heating and cooling device for the wrist called the Embr Wave. Their startup journey took a winding course through Greentown Labs to the MIT Skills Accelerator and later the MassChallenge accelerator. Along the way, they picked up an NSF grant, non-dilutive funding from Intel's "Make It Wearable" competition, and the Cool Ideas Award from Proto Labs. This validation led to a venture round from Intel Capital and Bose Ventures and a massively successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $630,000 from 3,000 backers. After four years of hard work, their product started shipping at the end of 2017. Enjoy my conversation with Forbes "30 Under 30" Recipient and Embr Labs Co-Founder and CEO Sam Shames as we learn how his startup took advantage of what his professor coined "Luck Surface Area" to help out the thermally underserved population. I got to interview a college grad from MIT who realized that the senior project him and his team were working on could turn into a business. This group of seniors set out to solve a very challenging problem of how to keep the body feeling comfortable even though the environment around them isn't at a satisfying level. Thus the Embr Wave bracelet was born. Have you ever been cold and ran your hands under warm water and instantly felt warmer? That is exactly sensation that the Embr Wave achieves with both warming and cooling capabilities. This is what innovation is all about.
