Episode #105 - In this enlightening episode, we welcome Margitt Royce. Margitt is a nurse, mother, spiritual teacher and mentor to mothers and daughters in a program called A Girls Rites of Passage.  She teaches and supports girls, their mothers and fathers through this important transition from girl to women. Margitt shares her passion for guiding girls through transformative rites of passage and fostering strong mother-daughter relationships.  With over a decade of experience, she has helped girls embrace menstruation, connect with lunar cycles, and confidently step into womanhood while equipping mothers with tools to support their daughters during this crucial phase. Margitt's upcoming book, The Fearless Mother: An Alternative Guide for Mothers of Tween Girls, offers empowering strategies for navigating the challenges of the tween years. Through physiological and psychological insights, her work strengthens communication and sets a foundation for a thriving maiden's journey.  Margitt emphasizes the power of community, love, and creating safe spaces for open dialogue to heal and empower both mothers and daughters. Takeaways The tween years are a critical time for girls as they navigate changes in their bodies and identities. Rites of passage are essential for helping girls transition into womanhood with confidence. Mothers often struggle with how to communicate effectively with their daughters during this time. Community support is vital for mothers to feel empowered in their parenting. Understanding menstruation and lunar cycles can help girls embrace their womanhood. Creating safe spaces for girls to discuss their experiences is crucial. The mother-daughter relationship can be one of the strongest bonds, but it requires nurturing. Mothers need to do their own emotional work to support their daughters effectively. Empowerment begins with self-love and acceptance for both mothers and daughters. Living with an awakened heart involves surrendering to the journey and following one's intuition. Sound Bites "What inspired you to empower girls?" "We need to create safe spaces for girls." Tween girls face unique challenges in a world where social media is an integral part of daily life. The impact of the digital age on their development can be both positive and negative, making it essential to understand and address these challenges. Our guest in Episode 253 of Class Dismissed created a program designed to teach that every girl has specific talents and gifts that make her unique and beautiful to the world. Katie Parker is the founder of Bloomfully and co-creator of I Believe in Me. I Believe In Me is a unique program for tweens that promotes self-confidence, self-esteem, and personal growth. The program empowers pre-adolescents with essential life skills and a positive mindset to navigate the challenges of their transitional years.  I Believe In Me uses interactive workshops, mentorship, and fun activities; tweens develop a strong sense of self-worth, resilience, and belief in their abilities.  Some of the challenges teens face are listed below. Body Image Pressures: One of the most prominent challenges tween girls face in social media is the constant pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards. Scrolling through filtered and carefully curated images can lead to self-esteem issues and body dissatisfaction. Reminding tweens that natural beauty comes in all shapes and sizes is crucial. Cyberbullying: Social media provides a platform for connectivity but can also be a breeding ground for cyberbullying. Tween girls may encounter hurtful comments, rumors, or exclusionary behavior online. It is crucial to teach them about responsible online behavior and reporting any incidents. Peer Validation: The need for peer validation has always been a part of adolescence, but social media amplifies it. Tweens might feel compelled to constantly seek likes, comments, and followers to measure their self-worth. Please encourage them to focus on authentic friendships and hobbies offline. Fear of Missing Out (FOMO): Social media is a never-ending stream of content, and the fear of missing out on what their peers are doing can cause anxiety. Help tween girls balance their online and offline lives, emphasizing the importance of real experiences and in-person connections. Time Management: Spending excessive hours on social media can lead to poor time management and affect schoolwork and other activities. Encourage tweens to set healthy limits on screen time and establish a tech-free zone during family meals and before bedtime. Comparison Trap: Constantly comparing themselves to others on social media can harm a tween's mental health. Teach them the value of self-acceptance and the idea that everyone has their own unique journey. As parents, guardians, or mentors, it's crucial to maintain open communication with tween girls about their online experiences. Educate them about digital literacy, responsible social media usage, and the importance of self-esteem grounded in reality. Provide a safe space for discussing their online encounters, addressing their concerns, and reinforcing their self-worth beyond the virtual world. #47: The Sexualization of Teen and Tween Girls. What Parents Of Both Girls and Boys Can Do

Experts agree that social media is to blame for the huge increase in the decline of teen girls' mental health over the past few years. While boy's mental health has also suffered, especially due to COVID, it's the girls' which has taken a nosedive. Cyberbullying, competition between peers and the constant barrage of unrealistic and sexualized images of influencers to compare themselves to. Sexualization of young girls and adolescents is a huge problem in our society and has been for decades. But social media has made it much more prevalent and pervasive. The never-ending stream of filtered and perfected images of young women and teens in their social media feed makes it impossible to escape. Influencers and even “beautiful friends” put endless pressure on girls to be skinny but curvy, with flawless skin, plumped lips, and long silky hair. These images create the belief that their sole value rests in their looks and sex appeal. For many girls, their entire self-worth rests on this belief. And if social media wasn't enough sexualizing and objectification for them, their school drives the message home. For wearing clothes, they buy at the mall, girls are in danger of being “coded”, sent home, or forced to cover up. They're made to feel their bodies are nothing but an object that drive men and boys to distraction at best or sexual assault at worst. Either way, it's their fault.Join me this week to discuss the sexualization of girls and find out how you can help your daughter or your son combat this pervasive and harmful issue. For show notes (including resources mentioned in the podcast, source documents and a full transcript, go to https://neurogility.com/47.)Speaking of Teens is sponsored by https://neurogility.com.FREE GUIDES for parents of teens and tweens:“10 Keys to Unlock Your Teen's Emotional Intelligence”“The Challenging Adolescent Brain” (e-book)“Emotional Awareness Strategies” (for parents)“Why Doesn't My Teen Sleep?” (e-book)“Communication for Teen Cooperation”“6 Things You Should Understand About Your Teen”“Helping Your Teen Overcome Negative Thinking”"I just wanted to let you know that I'm so thankful for your podcast! ...I'm so happy I discovered it!" Caris Snider and Amber discuss her experience with anxiety and how she is learning to shine light in the darkness for adults, tweens, teens and children through her devotional Anxiety Elephants. Questions Discussed During Battling Anxiety: Share a little of your early faith journey with us. When did you begin walking with Jesus? I don't know the details of your story, but what I do know sounds eerily familiar. While mine was crying uncontrollably on the floor while my 3 year old and newborn played nearby, yours was an anxiety attack while your daughter played nearby. Take us back to that time in your life and share what life was like and how you were coping. In addition to panic attacks, you were not eating due to the anxiety and fear, which is often a symptom of anxiety far less talked about. Will you speak to that symptom and your experience? What drove you to finally seek help and whose help did you seek? Seeking the help of a doctor and counselor are becoming less stigmatized, but as followers of Jesus we can still believe lies like, "I must not have enough faith" and "If I pray, this will go away." Did you believe those lies or others and how did you overcome them? You talk a lot about the freedom that comes from speaking openly about your experience vs. hiding and I 100% agree. It is another tool we have to fight against anxiety and depression. Not constantly bemoaning our illness, but shining light into the darkness, so others can pray and encourage. How has speaking openly about your journey with anxiety brought freedom? You've written Anxiety Elephants: A 31 day devotional to help stomp out your anxiety and now have a 90 day tween version for both girls and boys. Share a bit about your journey of writing the devotional and how you've seen God use your experience for good. If someone purchases your book, what can they expect? SHOW NOTES cont. The girls talk about their struggles, those being keeping up with standards and the pressure they feel especially keeping up with beauty standards that being a girl brings.  They talk about how they enjoy being carefree and can do what they like to a degree in their spare time and that they enjoy the fact that they now have more than one teacher at school and how they like this differentiation in middle school.  They talk about how they cope with having to think about the way they look and the pressures that this brings at this age.  They talk about what they would like parents to know about tweens these days.  The girls share what makes them feel most connected within their families. The girls discuss what they think their parents know about them and how their relationship is like between them and their parents.  They are grateful that they can go to an amazing school that they go to and that they have an amazing family and have a roof over their head and the food that they have available to them. The movie Cuties has caused quite the outrage among my circle of friends. I dug deeper into the intent of the movie and realized there is confusion and chaos even among the creators of the film. But it got me thinking and asking the question: What IS it really like living as a tween girl in this day and age and in our hyper-sexualized American culture? So I asked Ellianah what her fears are, her dreams, the pressures that she is facing today as she learns how to figure out this world. There is a lot she said that can be applied to your parenting and it's nice to be aware of what our tween girls are struggling with. I hope you leave this episode feeling empowered to help your daughters navigate life.

Really dislikes readingThe Pandemic has been hard on everyone, but for tween girls who thrive on social interaction, friendship, and talking all things out, it has been very challenging. Stress levels can run high in homes and families right now, so today we are talking about a fabulous solution to resolving stress in your tween girl. If your tween girl doesn’t know what to do with herself, or keeps telling you she is board, or is so tired of the pandemic restrictions, how can we encourage her and help keep her stress level down? Drumroll please….read a book. Read a good book. I know, who knew? Reading reduces stress.A study done by the University of Sussex showed that stress levels declined by 68% after participants read for just six minutes. Yes! You heard that right. This summer I was offered the chance to be a part of GEMS, a local summer camp for girls excelling in math and science. The camp was an opportunity for girls, grades four through seven, to explore their interest and skills in STEAM fields (science, technology, engineering, arts and math). And because of two local teachers’ awareness around how messages about having to ‘fix’ or change our bodies, so deeply impacts our ability to critically engage and excel in these STEAM areas, they asked us at Ophelia’s Place to kick off the camp with messages of body acceptance. Instead of letting our young people’s minds wander to all the ways they wish they looked different, we need to be encouraging them to explore all the amazing things their bodies do for them, and allow them to do. I decided to interview the girls to get them thinking more critically about just that. And I hope this interview helps you to do the same.

Today on Financial Fluency I am pleased to have Heather DeSantis on the show. Heather does Public Relations for small and mid-size companies, in particular entrepreneurs that would like to be internationally known for their cause and mission.   Heather is currently working on a variety of different PR projects including several big media tours for clients.  As well, in honor of Random Acts of Kindness Week, she has created a media campaign contest to drive awareness for a group called In between Girls, which raises awareness for Tween Girls and will allow its founder to share her message nationally and locally in a big way during a period of two weeks. She also is attending two of the largest media conferences in order to meet some people in the media to best serve her clients.   Having a great passion for working with people who have a great purpose, Heather is growing a Facebook group called Publicity with Purpose.  This group will be posting free media leads.  Members of the group can comment on the lead links that they feel might be a good fit for them, and Heather and her team will give them free publicity.   Her start in PR began when she worked at an advertising agency for three years.  There she was involved in media promotions for food brands, NFL networks and Yahoo sports.   She left in June 2015 with full intentions of becoming an entrepreneur.  She began her business in earnest in April 2016.  While there has been great ease in her first year in terms of referrals and growth, there have also been challenges specifically in learning what works for her, controlling her spending, not doing what everyone else is doing just because and so on.   Her model focuses on discovering her client’s key message, who is their ideal consumer, buyer and follower, and find out the most direct way to serve that person.  With the online market being oversaturated, Heather brings her clients together with people who really resonate with their message and need them in person.  She also gets her clients’ calendars booked with interviews, and writes their content as well. Heather offers a number of packages that are tailored to where her clients are starting from and where they want to go.  You can reach out to Heather via her website at  www.desantispr.com on Twitter at @HeatherDeSantis, on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/DeSantisPR and on IG: prgirlboss. Heather Shares her Message Here:   Purpose Before Profit -- If you focus on your MISSION and your WHY, your story and product will improve the lives of others. Then the profit will come! Resources: In Between Girls Organization:  http://inbetweengirls.org/ Heather has been in the Public Relations Industry for 5+ years and has worked with nationally known experts in the fields of Finances, Taxes, Entrepreneurship, Personal Productivity, Self Love, Positively Impacting Teen Girls, Executive Coaching, Leadership Development, Strategic Planning, Alzheimer's and Aging, Sex Trafficking, Women In Tech, Christianity, Medical Devices, Mompreneurs, Food, Charities amongst many other topics. Since beginning her own business in March of 2016 she has worked with over 1,500 media members and has learned how to authentically connect with them. All experts now have a strong following AND have already been featured in outlets such as The Huffington Post, US News & World Report, The Washington Post, CBS, FOX and ABC and have more than 100+ opportunities that will come to fruition in the next 2 months.
